I've been listening fully focused for about 20 minutes now. I would assert with confidence, that 15 minutes of said 20 have been comprised of advertisements and host yakking.

I did hear two songs though, one by Eddie Vedder and the other by Kim Mitchell - not bad, but not really all that tasty to me. Ooh, I'm being told that half an hour of non-stop music is on the way being kicked off by... Buffalo Springfield?

Currently, I kind of feel like I'm being subjected to a new-to-Halifax, university student's idea of cool music. With bands like Creed, Three Days Grace, Nickleback and Our Lady Peace all being played within the same hour, I must say, that this station's music reservoir is fairly irksome. There's not much talent gracing these airwaves, save for the infrequent Rolling Stones or Plaskett.

Verdict says that this station is ripe with crappy music. The good tunes are so few and far between that it's really not even worth tuning in for the possibility of 4 minutes of grandeur. Choose Seaside instead; it's far better than this swill.

The best thing to happen to Q104 in the last number of years is the introduction of competition. For years the station has been stale - stale playlist, stale routine, stale product. In the past few years the effort seems to have picked up, but it still is lacking on almost every level.

A quick aside, the commercials they air on television are enough to make me want to give them a zero. Not funny, not clever, just plain awful. I don't know how somebody could approve these ads, but they must stop. Sometimes they actually deter me from listening to the station.

Ok, rant over, back on track. I guess the important thing, beyond my personal gripes, is the playlist. The Q is a rock station, but it is very safe and predictable. Some of the tunes are great, but a lot of the tunes are Nickleback...so...yeah. Every now and then you will hear a great track, and they do run syndicated shows from Steven Van Zandt and Alice Cooper which can be very entertaining, but at the end of the day I listen to the radio to be introduced to new and exciting acts or to hear that classic backtrack from a great album. The Q simply does not deliver on that, but hey, they'll play that new Three Days Grace track...

    ....excited? Neither am I.

If you're a fan of very mainstream rock and roll and really awful jokes, check out Q104.3. It is better than it's been in a long time, but it's got a long way to go.
