This may be one of the coolest places in town...
Last time I was here, I saw The Devil's Double at a matinee showing, in the main cinema. What a mind blowing time. In addition to the movie being insanely awesome, the cinema itself is just gorgeous.
I love the 1930s old school cinema look, with the artsy decor and the astonishing layout. They have a balcony too- sit in the balcony, by all means! Nothing is quite cooler than sitting on the edge of the balcony, overlooking the big space and being in the perfect part to view tithe film.
But, if you cry easily, that's why the bottom is there... The "crying space"!!! How cool is that.
Prices are percent and they have the matinee pricing too. Bonus reduction if you're a student! The popcorn is nice and fairly priced, not to mention the "Coming soon" and what not screens are like the 80s with the corny CG and what not. Awesome.
In sort, do see a film here sometime... It really is worth it! -

I haven't seen a movie yet at the Princess II downstairs, but I'm very grateful that the Princess still exists and still shows films, for a number of reasons:
1) $6 tickets on Monday Nights
2) A small popcorn costs only $3.50
3) They show the best of fairly recent artsy films
4) It's located within a 10 minute walk of my house - On Whyte Avenue!
5) While the theatre isn't as ornate as some older theatres, it has plenty of charm.
6) The Balcony
7) Relatively youthful clientele and workers who care about the films.
While the theatre doesn't have the latest in screen and sound technology, it's good enough, especially for artsier films. My only quip is that is that the projection of the film sometimes went out of focus.
I found moviegoing in Victoria to be depressing for a number of reasons, but the Princess makes moviegoing a treat for me once again. -

The Princess Theatre plays to its strengths. Its screen isn't flashy and its sound system won't cause tinnitus; the movies it screens wouldn't benefit from the latest equipment.
I like the option to feel all bourgeoisie and sit in the balcony. That feeling is somewhat mitigated by the fact that I got the student discount using a card that may or may not be expired. Even without the student discount prices are cheap, especially on Monday. Concession is cheaper than at other theatres too.
I'm sure I'll come back many times to see interesting movies at a good price.Listed in: 30 day challenge

One of the cool, historic parts of the area to remain on Whyte Ave to this day, so I'm automatically in love.
Even with some renovations, this theatre has retained its old-timey feel, from the grand marquee above the entrance to the ornate iron above the door.
Tickets here are cheap cheap cheap! I saw a flick last night with some friends for only $6. Score! Princess usually plays some great indie flicks, too, along with some more mainstream ones, too. (Carlos and City Island vs. Black Swan and Vicky Christina Barcelona) Some of the films are played in a tiny theatre in the basement, not much bigger than my living room, while bigger films are played in the grand theatre on the main level. I love the balcony seating in this theatre. It feels so fancy!
Staff here have always been pleasant and the treats are way cheaper than at most big theatres. I'll take $6 popcorn any day, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's probably healthier than chain-theatre popcorn, too. -

I love this place!
Going to the Princess means you get to see a terrific (non main-stream) movie in beautiful surroundings for less money than it would cost to go sit in the boring (and usually loud) surroundings of one of the big ciniplexes.
The building is beautiful, it's great fun to sit in the balcony & look down on the show & it's also a lot quieter & cleaner than going to one of the big chain theatres.
Only complaint I could possibly make is that it's a bit difficult to snuggle up to someone in the chairs here - they're not designed for that (nuts!) - which means that the air conditioning can feel a bit too strong. -

Never been before but then I went not too long ago and I was blown away by this place. The modern theatre now bows down to this place. There was a second floor here, a balcony..just awesome. The service was fantastic and the crowd that comes here is a lil more mature. This theatre is where you get that movie feeling again by far the best theatre in town. LOVE IT!!!!!!!

Give me an old theatre with a beautiful marquee and I'm a happy man! Princess theatre is an extremely old theatre, built in 1915 and given that Edmonton was established as a city in 1904, just going for a movie here transports you to the early beginnings of the city.
The seating space and screen is small, in fact so small that you could fathom a flat screen TV being as big as the screen in a couple of years! But that's not to say that it's bad. I didn't find it ineffective at all and absolutely loved it! I give it 5 stars mainly because I actually prefer it to the Garneau theatre. They're both great and I hope that I can watch most movies in one of these theatres. Also, the insides of the auditorium are quite comfortable and have the same old-school feel that existed in other theatres before multiplexes entered our world - not that there's anything wrong with them!
Location-wise, it's perfect because the theatre is located really in the heart of Whyte Ave with all types of grub joints and bars around the corner to satisfy the movie-goer from brunch before a matinée to a dinner after an evening show. -

What would Whyte Ave be without the Princess Theatre? This beautiful, historic building is one of my favourite places to catch a flick. The Princess is an art house, so they focus on independent, foreign, Canadian, and local films. I've seen such movies here as 'Auto Focus,' 'Hard Candy,' and '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.'
There are two theatres in this building: the original that is located on the upper level, and the Princess II (built later) is located in the basement. I prefer the larger theatre, just because I find it's a better movie experience. The smaller theatre is very small, but cozy and quaint at the same time. There are snacks and drinks available to buy in both theatres, and I like that they are reasonably priced. They give student discounts on admission too.
I haven't heard or seen anything, but apparently, this place is haunted. The building is really old. It was build in 1915, so I think it's entirely possible, especially since I kind of believe in that stuff. This place is just so unique. It's really the perfect place for a relaxing night out. -

Edmontons last art house theatre. Always better than Cineplex Mammothonian Theatres. You can chat with the people that work there about the films. Actually thats the real difference....films....not movies.

I remember going to the Princess Theatre for matinees when I was really young and seeing old school disney films like "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast." I have very fond memories of this theatre from my childhood. It always seemed like an event out -- kids day out on the town!
I don't go here as much anymore. The last time I saw a movie here, I went to the Princess II. It seemed a little bizarre going into a different theatre here, especially because my favourite part about the Princess is the balcony. There is no balcony in the Princess II.
Alas, I went into the Princess II to watch a movie. There is something about the popcorn here that just tastes REAL. Even if you are on a diet, splurge and get the butter. It will be the best moment of cheating you have ever had. It tastes so fresh.
I will go here again, I have nothing against it. I am not a huge fan of some of the movies they show, which would probably be why I don't go as often anymore. -

This theatre is a historic site in Edmonton. It was built back in 1915, and has the charm that's been lost in the mass movie boxes of today. The original balcony is still there, and one thing I thought was cool is there's a "Cry Room" with sound-proofing, ideal for families ... or couples?! I will have to check if you can get reservations. It also costs a bit less than more mainstream movie theatres - $10 for adults, and on Mondays its $6. They also tend to screen older, more alternative movies traveling on the film festival circuit. The company that owns princess also owns Garneau on 109 St.

Don't sit in the balcony if you want to hear the movie. We say "Crazy Heart" and missed 20% of the movie because the sound does not carry very well.
We'll be back as it's a great venue but, honestly, the sound sucks in the balcony.
