Rice flour in bulk? Tapioca and soy flour cheap even cheaper than in America for the same brand? Am I dreaming?

I rub my eyes and realize that no I am not dreaming. And unforutnately I am also covered in cornstarch thanks to scooping the bulk stuff in a disorderly fashion.

I swung into PriceSmart a few minutes before they were closing in need of corn starch and molasses. I discovered the gluten free baking section and continued to annoy staff, who were friendly to me anyways, as I browsed ignoring their closing announcements for "future reference."

Oh, and did I mention rice flour (white and brown) for $0.33? I know this has a contamination risk, but dang it its so cheap I will risk a few pesky pieces of wheat. But their bulk bins each have a teethered scoop so I'm feeling safe.

The store is huge, has a great meat selection as well (much to the excitement of my boyfriend), and well the prices aren't smart.... they're brilliant!

This location is also very snazzy, just off Hwy 1 its easy to get to from the surrounding areas.

High five to my new favorite grocery!

Price Smart Foods like Save-On-Foods is a subsidiary of the Overwaitea Food Group, that in turn, is owned by Jim Pattison Group. In short this high quality and affordable supermarket is locally owned and operated.

I've recently made a conscious decision to support more local business and stay away from American chains like Safeway, but you really don't have to try hard when you look at the overall competitiveness of Price Smart.

I find their stores very consistent, between the one on Knight and King Edward and the Rupert locations. Both are relatively new and were built with in the last couple of years. Clean, well stocked, well light, and the average quality of food is quite high. Their vegetables are not exactly top notch and you will likely find better at your local veggy store, but compared to Costco or Safeway they're a vast improvement. Their organics section is always in good shape and they've done a very conscious thing in stocking up on more Asian brands, which considering the area of both locations, is a very smart business choice.

Their pharmacy section is giant. I always disliked having to go to several places in Point Grey and Dunbar to find everything I needed, but since moving to the Drive this place has become my one stop shopping destination for what I need. The Canadian Tire and PetSmart (I know right, what's with all the smart names) easily makes this one of the most convenient places in Vancouver.

They accept Save-On-More cards and offer a handy online flyer for each store. If you scan your card at the front you get special items on sale, but more importantly an additional 1000 points if your purchase is over $75 (with some exceptions like no bus passes and pharmacy prescriptions). The points can be spent online or on everyday purchases like eggs. You're getting roughly 2% back on your purchase which is not too bad.

I personally favour the concept of rewards programs versus programs that penalize you for not having a membership. This allows people who don't belong to Save-On-Foods / Price Smart membership to still get the savings and choose whether they want to participate in a somewhat controversial purchase tracking program, while still allowing others like myself who don't care so much to get the savings from having their sales information sold to companies and product research firms.

I cannot stress this enough but their self service counters always work which I find a continuous battle at other places. Furthermore they seem to have more sophisticated software which even has the baby boomers zipping through their purchases and on their way. Why at other places does the self service check out lines have to be even slower than going through the regular line ups?

To top this place off, they share an enormous free parking lot outside. Not that I find it particularly handy, I appreciate on top of their close wheelchair parking, they also have parking spots for family parking. Just one of those choices you think to yourself, good on you for not making parents (usually one parent) have to walk through a busy and dark parking lot with groceries and children.

    #1:
The name of this food store is PriceSmart. One word, capital P. Capital S.

    Newsflash:
Shopping for food stuffs does not have to be a miserable experience here!

This store is such a relief to Safeway, Capers, and even Donald's in some ways. It may very well be that it is fairly new and therefor the crowds haven't discovered it yet. Imagine though, Saturday 4:30-ish and you can actually maneuver your cart freely through the isles with out aggro.

Also, I have to say that this store has the nicest employees! Miranda in the Deli dep't. is always friendly and courteous, Blake in Produce, goes out of his way to offer above average help and even showed us a Vegetable nutrition book which they have available to customers on the floor.

I had no idea that Price Smart even existed...so..I was surprised to discover them today...

They are part of a new complex on Grandview that consists of a Canadian Tire, Pet Cetera, Starbucks and the Price Smart...

I drove into the FREE parkade and heading in...WOW..so big...so clean...sooo nice..and sooo empty...where are all the shoppers?? I am thinking that much like me..no one know this place is open and I would hazard to guess they have opened only in the past few days...in any case it was really nice to cruise the iles without other pesky shoppers in my way...that's right...I'm talking to you Costco..

Every department had the best quality items..the meat selection was great..and fresh..the baking smelt delicious...and the prices are fantastic...

It wasn't until I picked up a few items and went to pay...at a self check out which I love...that I realized it Price Smart is part of Save On Foods..another one of my favorite grocery stores...so it would make sense that I like Price Smart so much...

Check out the website which has an on-line flyer...

Fun fact...Price Smart is BC owned and operated..go BC!

One of the many of Jim Pattison businesses that are popping up left and right, and in a great neighborhood that now gives people some choice in shopping. A great alternative from the Superstore and the Walmart, located in the new plaza that also contains a Canadian Tire, Pet Smart, and Starbucks (to name a few), this is a real clean and brightly lit store.

The prices are good, and many of the items have comparison prices to other supermarkets. They also take the Save-On more card, so you can accumulate your points. I find the store well organized, and items, prices clearly labeled. They have helpful staff at all the departments, especially the deli department (I was questioning how the certain cheese's tasted, and they gladly cut me a sample slice of what I wanted to try) and even at the self checkout. Just remember, they close at 10 PM, an hour earlier than the other two around the area. The parking is never a hastle here, and that's a blessing.
