I come here for only 2 things: Hainanese chicken and chicken BBQ satays. The soup that comes with the Hainanese chicken is brothy and rich. The chicken is juicy and delicious, and portions are hunormous!! So nuff said on getting the best bang for your buck.

Interiors are dingy and unkempt. But whatevs, I'm only here for the food.

I was so excited when I saw the sign. Authentic Malaysian food inside and a steady stream of people going in and out ...

    Unfortunately my enthusiasm was short-lived.

First we sat down at the table that did not have the gigantic dead mosquito on it. But assuming that possibly everything was kosher in the kitchen, we proceeded to order.

Worst prata ever. How can they call this place Prata Man?! Dry, sad, lukewarm, limp prata served with flavorless chewy chicken in a tasteless curry. I was only able to force down a few bites and my dining companion finished it off.

To put an exclamation point on the awful experience, my dining companion became quite ill within an hour. I won't provide the gross details here, but trust that the situation was rather unpleasant.

I do not recommend dining at this restaurant.

This is the best place for Hainan Chicken in Vancouver, hands down. Anyone that likes it will tell you that they have the technique and cooking broth straight from Singapore and Malaysia. The quality is fantastic and delicious. Hainan Chicken is the only thing that I have ever eaten here...maybe I should think about eating something else? Nope...as soon as I walk through the door there is only one thing on the menu that I want to eat.

The restaurant itself, however, reminds me of a low grade cafeteria. It is very lit up and has no ambiance whatsoever. Who cares! Eat, enjoy, and go!

Some of the best Malaysian food I've had in this part of the world, but some quirks as well.

Parking is ample here thanks to it being part of a dingy strip mall.

The interior is Ghetto (with an upper case G).  My friend warned me about this, and he was absolutely right on this one.  It almost looks like an empty warehouse or department store.

We had a 2-person combo (Combo A) for $18.50 including tax.  I'll talk about the food in a bit, but the head-scratcher was that they ran out of the barley drink that comes this combo.  So they gave us ONE (individual-sized) bowl of soup instead.  Huh?

The other head-scratcher is that this combo for 2 comes with ONE bowl of rice.  This is why I gave the place 3 stars instead of 4.  We had to order a 2nd bowl of rice, which is not the cheapest at $1.75.  That's how they get ya.

Soup - not your typical MSG + water.  This one had a gingery kick to it, which while a bit unusual, really worked out.  I don't remember it being like this in Malaysia though.

Beef skewers (there is beef/chicken/pork) - served with a really sweet satay sauce with lots of peanuts.  The wooden sticks were a bit burnt and broke off in my hand, but that's no biggie.  The meat was cooked just right.  The sauce also came with some cucumber slices and some picked vegetables (carrot + turnip) that was cut into thin slices instead of strips.  It looks different but doesn't work, as they turned out really mushy.  Oh, this is the difference between Combo A and Combo B.  For B, you get deep fried onion biscuits instead of these skewers.

Laksa - great soup.  Crispy bean sprouts, non-mushy vermicelli.

Hainan chicken rice - my friend said this was the best, and he was right.  Not too salty, and silky smooth skin and meat.  Beats out Tropika.  Also served with the picked carrots + turnip, and a dish of sweet chili sauce + green onions in oil.

The service is a bit questionable, but it is admittedly a good deal nonethless. I will be back.

I have some friends who are SERIOUS about their Hainese chicken. And the verdict is...

THE ABSOLUTE BEST PLACE for Hainese chicken.

I had to try it out for myself!

Wow, total hole in the wall malaysian grub...i was really looking forward to some authentic treats!

There were about 7 or 8 of us...we ordered 2 full Hainese chickens, a rice dish, chicken curry, roti, a variety of skewers and a noodle dish. My friend did all the ordering, so I have forgotten the names completely.

Everything was mediocre to me, the flavors were a little on the bland side. But the chicken was delicious. Definitely the best dish out of everything!
I would come back out this way for their chicken again..and maybe some other dishes since I was a little disappointed with what was ordered.

whenever you just want to eat as if you're eating at a friend's place, a friend whose mom makes really great Malaysian food, come to Prata Man.

Service is brisk and you get your food before you feel too faint with hunger from watching everyone tearing into Hainanese chicken and roti all around you.

Go with friends and bring $8 each and be amazed at how well you can eat!

    Love this place!

5 just because I want people to try it.

    It's very hole-in-the-wall.

I always used to think they wanted to name themselves PRADA man but spelled it wrong. (Roti) Prata is the equivalent of Roti Canai.

Their Hainanese chicken is the best I've had in Vancouver. Better than Cafe Dlite.

I remember it being $20 for an entire Hainanese chicken here. In reference a half Hainanese chicken at Banana Leaf is $17.

Their roti and curries are also quite good.

This is as 'hole in the wall' as a Richmond restaurant can get. Mind you, they have very good boneless (yes!) Hainese chicken with rice combos, and other delicious Malaysian cuisine. Satays, Mee Goreng, Malaysian fried rice, roti, and curries.

I never dine in, and always do take out. Call ahead of time as they are usually very busy.

Located in a little strip mall with free parking.

Simple, delicious dishes, and I can always get my Malaysian fix here.

If you are looking for pretentious gourmet food in a classy cafe, you will be sorely disappointed - but if you want to know what it is like to eat home cooked Malaysian-style foods at affordable prices in the back of someone's kitchen - then you are in for a real treat! (^__^)

*Prata or Roti () Prata is an unleavened flat bread derived from the Indian/Punjabi/Bengali regions, well known from the Netherlands to South Africa, and from the West Indies to SE Asia, but I find it more similar to the Chinese/ Korean/ Japanese "green onion pancake" (/ /). At any rate it is a delicious side with anything you might order at Prata Man.

*Hainanese chicken ()  - a Chinese classic () with a Malaysian twist also popular in Thailand () , often considered the national dish of Singapore. Prata Man does an awesome version: if you eat in it is served cold along with acar (carrot and daikon pickles), sweet chilli and green onion/ ginger condiments; warm "oiled" rice and hot clear gingery-chicken broth. If you get take away, you miss out on the broth. For our family of four we devour a whole order easily, and often add satays or Rendang curry, prata Rendang and extra acar. When there is just two of us, we only order half but often share with it, especially if it is cold outside. In the summer heat we like to order two whole orders to take home and have with a cold vegetable and noodle salad. We have been eating this dish here for about ten years and have never had it boneless - so I think you might need to request that with your order if you prefer it that way, as many have told me they have had it that way here - or maybe it only makes a difference if you order in English instead of Cantonese?

*Beef, Chicken or Pork Satays;traditional SE Asian street food of marinated meat barbecued on skewers () and served with a crushed peanut sauce. Simple and tasty. We usually add 6-12 to our whole order of Hainanese chicken if there are 4-8 of us eating, but they take longer to prepare so we usually get them half-way through our meal, just in time to stop the young people from complaining they are still hungry.

*Rendang Beef Curry: may actually resemble Hong Kong-style Beef Curry () more than anything like the Indonesian dish that it is named after, but we enjoy it. It is a mild beef and potatoes curry with lots fo gravy. It is just enough for one person, or two if shared and accompanied with prata &/or rice.

*Mee Goreng: another Indonesian inspired dish cooked Malay-stye derived from Chinese chow mein (), with thick noodles stir-fried with tofu and pork (unlike in Malaysia). It is a big dish, just right for two with a bowl of soup, unless you are young and have a hollow leg, then it might be just enough for your lunch.

*Nasi Goreng: fried rice () Indonesian style. A great filler to have with soup, curry or the Hainanese chicken especially if you don't like the "oiled" rice or would like to have something different. We usually have it for "brunch" with soup.

    * Laksa: a coconut-based curry noodle soup () that is uniquely SE Asian. The Prata Man version has vegetables, tofu puffs, and seafood. This is great for lunch and suitable for one, or to share with some other side dishes. Perfect for a cold, wet, blustery, winter day.

*Barley tea: Served cold or hot. This is quite nice hot in the winter, and a nice change from the jasmin or green teas we usually have with Asian food when we eat out. The cold version is quite sweet but we enjoy it in the summer as a nice balance with the spicy and salty foods we usually eat.

I think they cater to the tastes of the Hong Kong Chinese who make up the majority of their client base and who generally do not eat "in" the restaurant. So they may not necessarily be "authentic" Singaporean cuisine, but it is very popular in Richmond and very inexpensive.

There is usually enough free parking, but you need to go prepared to pay cash for your order, whether you eat in or take out.

***Very busy in the evenings and on weekends - but they have a great combo deals for lunch during the week - a great opportunity to bring a friend and try something new ***

Though the menu was promising, it didn't turn out to be as good as i wanted it to be. The Laksa was more curry bee hoon, than Laksa. It was tasty for sure, but Laksa it was not - they should not advertise it as such. The Mee Goreng was decent. yummy when warm, and the hokkien fried noodles was almost like the real thing - except it was missing Sambal and a touch of lime.

The barley drink was an OK attempt, but the type of barley used wasn't right (it had an odd aftertaste). I didn't try the chicken rice, which almost everyone in the shop was eating :)

It was a passable meal, but not something i would drive many miles to savor... i miss Orchid Delight :P

This is a hole in the wall Malaysian restaurant with authentic spicing.  The quality is normally pretty good, but can be variable depending on the day.  Generally quite popular though. My favourites are their curries.
