A really fun store with tons of Native American artwork, textiles, crafts, and furniture. It's a little pricey, but it's all handmade and locally produced. The colors are outstanding on everything, and I just wish that my house was decorated with a lot of the stuff that's found here. Like others have said, a lot of the fun here is just looking at some of the amazing pieces that Lakota artists have created.

Prairie Edge has beautiful pieces, and is worth visiting, if you want to get a good idea of what Lakota art is like. Truly gorgeous art (and phenomenally expensive to match).

However, several of the Native artists I know in the area refuse to work with Prairie Edge, because they feel they are not fairly compensated for the work they do. One artist I have personally bought pieces from has said when he sold to Prairie Edge, they paid him $200, and sold the piece for $1000 - he felt this was unfair. He now sells privately, for this reason.

Native Americans in this area have a lot of challenges, and there are better ways help than by than by shopping at Prairie Edge. But by all means, take a look around. They have a great variety of both traditional and modern Native American art and crafts - it's definitely worth a look. But you might consider taking your business elsewhere, if social change is something you're interested in.

When I saw this place was reviewed, I had to weigh in.  Another must see place if you're in the area.

The highlight for me was the oldest and simplest part of the place:  a large room filled with beads of all sorts, hides and other crafts.  Beads were very traditional looking, not the sort of thing you'll find at Michael's or Hobby Lobby.  Felt more like a trading post.

This is a big place with alot to see, Native American crafts of a wide variety.

I had a meeting nearby and my family was going to explore the downtown Rapid City area a bit while they waited.  Over two hours later, they still had not made it out of this place.

We were told by a local that this place was overpriced -- but they were quite wrong.  Crafts and artwork was not only fairly priced but reasonable by Chicago standards.  After picking up a few postcards and not expecting to buy anything else, we saw an irresistable piece of Raku pottery.  In addition to beautiful artisan work, they have a huge bead selection.

Don't miss it if you like fine crafts and are in the area!

I lived in Rapid City for a couple years and I always brought out of town visitors here. Sure, some of it's spendy but this is one of those places where just looking is a lot of fun.

The gift shop is just a normal gift shop full of things you could find anywhere, but the rest ...wow! Traditional leather clothes, skins, beadwork, quill work, and carving steal the show on the main floor but it's worth it to get up to the second and third floor and poke around. There's a good bookstore on all things Native American with a small music and movie section. If you're into history or beads, there's an antique bead display tucked away where you might miss it. And then the top floor is a full contemporary art gallery.

Didn't find anything we NEEDED nor could we afford anything that was really nice, but it is a wonderful place to look around and take in everything they have - the fine arts, books, beads, handicrafts and more!

There was an outstanding huge private collection of beads in one room.

On the top floor they have a wonderful display of limited edition fine art of cast paper sculptures by Allen and Patty Eckman...very cool stuff!

At times, it felt like being in a museum!!!

I went in there to look at their beading supplies, and I was not disappointed.

I don't use much seed beads in my work, but they have a wonderful mix hanks of beads, at pretty good prices.  I couldn't resist buying two different hanks.

The items that they sell, made from seed beads, are lovely to look at.

This trading post is pretty big.  If there's something you're thinking of getting, the likelihood is that the have it.

This is the place you go for a gift to give to someone who has everything.  Friendly staff, interesting selection, and so much to look through...  Definitely a "must top here" next time we are in town!

Wow.  I have to agree with the other reviews for Prairie Edge.  This place is amazing.  I loved looking at the Native American crafts.  But the best part was the art gallery on the third floor.  Please do not miss this.  They feature a lot of local artists and the work is amazing.  I spent hours here looking at the beautiful and impressive art that included oils as well as watercolors.  Some of my favorite art was a painting of buffalo and some that featured horses.  And the owners are very, very nice and interesting to talk to.  You can see the pride that they have in their store.  It's really an amazing place.  Enjoy!
