Review from Amanda B.

This portrait studio is really popular amongst Carleton students, especially around graduation time. I had my graduation photos done here during the school year while I was finishing up my last exams. Since this time is their busiest, I had to make an appointment, but it's located right on campus at the Unicentre, so I didn't mind since I was walking through there. They called me later on in the week to confirm my appointment and instructed me to wear a plain white dress shirt with a collar.
The staff here did not seem like professionals at all, more like students themselves. They were very nice, though, and they seemed to know what they were doing. I actually really appreciated the more casual approach, since it helped me be more relaxed for my photos. I believe each person is supposed to get about 2 poses, but the girl that did mine gave me 2 extra ones, which I really appreciated. I posed with a combination of red roses, graduation cap/no cap, gown, "books", and a pretend diploma with "Carleton University" written on it. She kept telling me to keep my chin up, which most studios like this tend to do, but I just knew the picture would end up with me looking like I had a double-chin and/or no neck, and I was right, a couple of them did. Maybe that's just me being picky, but hey, they ARE graduation photos, right? The photo-taking session didn't take too long - maybe only 15-20 minutes max, and there were a lot of people going in and out. It didn't take very long to receive the proofs, either - only a couple of weeks.
They had a whole variety of photos to choose from for your package, with different objects, backgrounds, and photo sizes. They are also priced pretty standard - I paid a couple hundred bucks for 4 poses with 4 different sizes. It seems like a lot, but it wasn't too bad for graduation photos, which are usually high-priced, anyway. -

I was not impressed with this place. I know what angles work with my face shape and they refused to listen to me. I was not thrilled that the person taking my photo was likely a student as well, and one with no taste in hair placement or posing. They had no clue about angling or lighting either... Seemed to me that they just went through a series of formulaic poses that they do with everyone, paying no attention to what makes you look best- and making you look your best is the job of a photographer! I would have thought Carleton would have a professional studio for grad portraits, but this place is a step below your local department store photographer- and far more expensive. Save yourself some money and go elsewhere. You won't find quality here. Personally, I went back to the photographer who did my senior portrait in high school- much better to work with a professional photographer, and cheaper.
