Even after countless visits to Vancouver, I didn't know this place existed. But to my defense, I would not have ventured to this side of Vancouver so as to allow me to stumble upon this hidden gem of a restaurant.
It is neither fancy nor ghetto, neither quiet nor overly bustling, and while it is not exactly cheap, dining here wouldn't break the bank either. The one thing that is outstanding about this restaurant is how authentic and home-made the dishes are - a result of a mom-and-pop venture.
True, the chili in the Ayam Bumbu Bali (spicy grilled chicken) could have had more kicks, but I'm a masochist when it comes to spicy food, and judging from other people's reaction to my version of Ayam Bumbu Bali (grill chicken legs, smother with a jar of Bumbu Bali spices secretly smuggled across the border, serve), the taste is pleasing to the general population's palate.
Martabak Sapi (fried thin pastry filled with beef bits and vegetable) reminded me of the time when I was growing up, prohibited from eating the food sold by street vendor (for hygiene reasons), but still bought it anyway with whatever little pocket money I had and felt like a bada$$ for defying my parents.
After discovering this place, I made a point to rent a car each time I visited Vancouver, even though a commute from Four Seasons Vancouver to either Yaletown or TD Tower, where I spent most of the time working, would only take 15 minutes... on foot, which in itself renders any kind of transportation unnecessary.Listed in: Vancouver on an expense…
