This place is the epitome of don't judge a book by its cover. Most people would probably just think it's a divey bar (Times Changed High and Lonseome Club), but during the daytime and early evening, it's "Pollo Volante" tex-mex cantina. There's nothing on the exterior that screams tex-mex restaurant other than the little sign above the door that say "Wpg's Best Mexican Food." And really, how could I not try a place that claims to serve the best in anything. It certainly isn't the best, but it is pretty good. Winnipeg certainly doesn't have a lot of good Mexican places and I am sure most are not even close to the real deal. But I am impressed that this place offers a mole sauce and also makes guacamole and salsa from scratch! Making salsa isn't difficult but many tex-mex places in the city do not put in the effort to do that so I was impressed that they cared about it here.
The interior is dark and very much a bar atmosphere. The menu has a good selection of items from quesadillas, black bean soup, chile con carne, enchiladas to tacos. Most dishes are around $10. They will even make vegan and vegetarian items available on request. They even offer a $10 all you can eat taco lunch, which is pretty popular with the Friday crowd. It's not an elaborate taco spread but it'll do for that price.
I had the chimichanga ($10) with rice and a corn and bean salad (another choice available is the refried beans). Really, how can you go wrong with a deep fried burrito? It's stuffed with beans and a choice of chicken, beef, chorizo or veggie and topped off with a choice of 4 different salsas (roja, verde, mole and vegan). It's a very filling dish. The rice and the corn and bean salad were both delish! I loved how refreshing the corn salad was.
Service was awesome! The server was super friendly and knowledgeable and had such a great passion about the food. And despite what you might think, this place is clean. I mean it's dark and still a bar setting but don't let that turn you off!
Lunch is from Wed-Fri: 11:30 am - 2 pm
Dinner is from Thurs-Sat 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
