One of my Top 5 places to hang out on a sunny afternoon. What more could you ask of a park? There's cannons to play on, a number of trails to explore, a beach (which I wouldn't swim in but it's there) and a beautiful view of the harbour entrance. If you don't like dogs, this may not be the best place to go as there are tonnes of dogs with their owners - me included - but other than that, it's one of the city's many gems that make me proud to call Halifax home.

I've been going to Point Pleasant Park since I moved here nearly ten years ago. A great place to bike ride, walk, bring your dog, sit, relax, suntan, play frisbee, etc. It's a destination on the southern most tip of the Halifax peninsula.

After Hurricane Juan hit in 2003, I remember my first trip to the park and seeing the vast openness that was left by the fallen trees. It was astonishing. Suddenly, the pathways were no longer enclosed and path-like. The adventure of exploration diminished. I went there this week, my first time there this week, and I've seen a lot of additional work done since even last year. Added trees, added paths, but a lot more growth. PPP is recovering and unlike most of the parks in and around Halifax, it still maintains that true sense of being in the forest without having to travel too far or worry about some of the larger animals you'd find elsewhere, although the occasional deer does make its way in.

Point Pleasant is a fun place to explore, bring friends, have picnics and check out some of the old ruins. Heck, take in a play during the summer during the Shakespeare by the Sea evenings. You won't find half this stuff at any other park anywhere.

This is a wonderful place that you can go to without driving an hour and still get the quiet of the countryside. Its a great little park full of paths that cut through history and trees! You can learn while you walk! (If school was like this I would be Smart and fit)

It's a beautiful walk no matter the time of day! My favorite is when its foggy and a little misty! Makes the place seem so far away.

The park is well maintained and for the most part doesn't have any issues with hooligans! The people who walk their dogs are so friendly and make sure to pick up after their pooches which is always nice cause I like my shoes!

Take a walk in the park! I guarantee you will love it!

Yelpers of Halifax! You should be ashamed of yourselves for not reviewing this place!
Point Pleasant Park (PPP) is a real jewel for Halifax.
It has a little bit of something for everyone. Except nudists.

Want to go for a nice gentle stroll along a woodland path that is also right next to the ocean? Check.
Or maybe you'd like walk your dog and even allow it off-leash in a near-pristine protected wilderness area? Check.
Looking for somewhere to have a picnic, play some Frisbee or fly a kite? Check.
More vigorous and looking for some hard-core running, both up- and downhill? Check.
A fan of live theatre presented in atypical venues? Check.
Want to go for a dip in the Halifax Harbour? ... Well, ew. But "Check."

The park does lose a few points for its disappointing (though mostly understandable) rules around bicycles: Not permitted on weekends or holidays. Which, of course, is the best time to go for a bike ride. The park is at its peak usage at those times so it makes sense to limit the fastest moving vehicles. Still, frustrating.

I love a good walk on a fall day, and for this reason I'm a big fan of Point Pleasant Park. You're still in the city, but in some parts of the park it feels like you're in the middle of the wilderness. There are great ocean views, lots of trails, lots of grassy knolls, lots of cool old forts, lots of everything you'd want from your local park.

The only thing preventing a 5-star rating, as mentioned by Master Yelper Ben B., is the random rules and rule enforcement. Can you ride your bike or not? Do dogs go on the leash or off? No one can say for sure. However, there is one rule that is strictly enforced (and I learned this the hard way) - if you're not back to your car before they close the gates, your vehicle WILL get locked in the parking lot, and there is no guarantee that anyone will come unlock the gate for you in any timely fashion. So while I definitely recommend that you head to PPP for a leisurely afternoon or early-evening stroll, I also advise that you keep an eye on the clock.

I struggled with the rating here. I'll admit it: I'm a BC girl, so any park on the Atlantic will never be quite as good as a park on the Pacific.

That snobbery didn't seem enough to withhold the star, but I had to get that out of the way. (Oh, and there's basically Christmas trees everywhere here. I could probably hug even the oldest trees. Okay, I'm done, I swear.)

I love the hidden spots in this park the most. There's a few places with gorgeous views and even less foot traffic, though you have to go off the main trails to find them (keep an eye out for beaten paths) or come with just about anyone who grew up here.

If you're interested in history, there's some kind of old fort that was undergoing reconstruction the last time I went and lots of cool statues and informational plaques. If you'd rather walk along the seashore and have fun slipping on wet rocks, finding shells (and less natural items, shall we say), and communing with nature, that's cool too.

One warning: this park is not for those afraid of dogs. As noted, the off-leash areas aren't really clear. I don't mind, since I love making friends with dogs more than people (shh, don't tell anyone), but just be careful when you're sitting on a rock cliff face or eating!

Several of my most peaceful solitary moments have occurred in this park -- sometimes on a brisk walk in the rain with my iPod in and very few others around, and other times alone by the seashore on a warm spring day. Point Pleasant is a little slice of heaven in the south end.

This time of year always reminds me again why I love Point Pleasant Park so much.  One of my favourite things to do during this fair, if chilly, season is to go for a stroll through the trails here on a beautiful Fall day, drinking in the colours of the leaves, the cool, crisp air that makes me feel even more cozy in my nice warm sweater/jacket, and perhaps even a delicious pumpkin latte or hot chocolate from a nearby coffee shop.  Also a great time to cuddle up on a bench with a good book and/or your sweetie.

The length and number of trails themselves will give you ample time and opportunity to enjoy all that this season (or any other, for that matter) has to offer.

And if you're in the mood for some entertainment, the Shakespeare by the Sea Theatre Company usually offers a production or two in October and November, which are always worth supporting.  This year they will be performing Dracula (based on Bram Stoker's version).

I really do enjoy this little (er, not so little) slice of forest heaven our city has.  It allows for some time to forget about being in the city, without having to go all that far.

The trails and paths are generally well maintained which is great for walkers, runners and bikers alike.  And they're usually wide enough for people to pass without getting in each others way.   Some of the paths allow for a water view, while others meander amongst the trees.  And generally the park is clean and inviting.

It pains my heart to think of the difference pre and post Juan.  Once a thick. lush, thriving forest has become dramatically more sparse since Juan unleashed upon our city.   I do wonder if the city is taking action to ensure the park eventually returns to its once mighty state:  are they planting trees?  Or are they simply relying on Mother Nature to repair herself?  Either way, it will take a life time for it to return to its original glory, and sadly that won't happen in my life time.

Personally I would like to see some more accurate signage for those who are directionally impaired as I am.   A couple of signs indicating how to get back to the entrances would be nice, instead of relying on a hope and a prayer as I often do.

My only complaint has little to do with the park itself and more to do with users of the park.  I love that it is dog friendly and even allows for off leash play.  My pooch doesn't go off leash just yet, but I can appreciate and understand pooches that behave themselves and are allowed to romp free.   The key word in that sentence was 'behave'.  If your dog doesn't return to you when called, and is running around like a maniac, perhaps Fido needs to not be off leash just yet.  The park is for all of us to enjoy: you, me, your dog and mine.   We're all expected to be courteous to other users, human and canine alike.

I grew up in the South End, and thus spent many a summer afternoon during my childhood wandering around the forest, roasting marshmallows on public BBQ pits and biking with my mom and sister. I freakin' loved it. Unfortunately, and I hate to say this, there's room for improvement.

Point Pleasant Park post-Juan is a tad depressing, but there's not much to be done about that. The park lost a lot of trees that will take a lifetime to replace. But other improvements could be made.

The dog rules are confusing. Which trails? When? All the time? Sometimes? Are there certain times of the day, certain days of the week, certain parts of the park that I could frequent to avoid having a massive dog run up and knock me to the ground? Yes? No?

The bike rules are too harsh. Weekdays only? Really? Come on, Halifax. Give us bicycle enthusiasts one day on the weekend. I'm not asking for both here - Saturday OR Sunday. Or allow bikes before noon, or after 3pm, whatever. Just at some point. For those of us who get home from work at 6pm and don't finish dinner until 8, it's awfully hard to go for a recreational bike ride. And don't worry - I'm a really polite cyclist. I don't speed past people, I stick to the right of the road. Much like dog owners, I'm sure there are bad cyclists but it seems that Point Pleasant Park should be big enough for all of us.

I want to give this park 5 stars, however, as of recent events.... I shall keep it to a 4 star.
I have been bringing my 3 little pups to the park for years.  I almost always encounter other park goers with their pets, but it is a FEW of the park goers that ruin the park fun for me and my pups some times.  I feel that a park ranger should patrol the park more recently.. and not just drive around on the ocean walk, but go through the middle of the park.  I am sure enforcing the rules might help with the few dog owners that have AGGRESSIVE dogs that like to attack other dogs.  The bully mentality in pets mimics that in humans.  Well I am here to say, I will protect my little dogs against the aggressive dogs and the humans that own them.
I do enjoy my time spent in Point Pleasant Park, but only at certain times of the day now.

As the proud own of a three year old Chocolate Lab, I absolutely love visiting Point Pleasant Park to give him his daily exercise. We only live a 10 minute walk away from the park so it's a great spot to let him run around off leash.

I always get a big smile and remember why I love Nova Scotia when I reach the side of the park along the ocean. There aren't many places in the heart of a city that allow you to walk in the woods and along a coast in one park. Love it!

I love Point Pleasant Park! Point Pleasant has over 10 kms of walking and hiking trails.

I often take my old collegue, Cocoa the Chocolate Lab who lives at the Best Western Chocolate Lake Hotel here for a walk. SInce I don't work there anymore it's a good place for us to catch up and spend some time together. Together we run the trails and play with sticks. Often times we run into other dogs and Cocoa runs around with them.

You can still see the devastation from Hurricane Juan, but the landscapers are taking very good care of the park. Many of the "Tour Sites" are being restored as we speak and are looking great.

Every summer a group of people get together to perfrom in the park what they call "Shakespear by the Sea" where they perform plays. I am soo going this year!

I am so glad I found this park. I always assumed it was less of a public recreation area and more of a wildlife preserve with walking trails, like pacific spirit park in Vancouver. Turns out it's a beautiful piece of nature on the edge of the city, fully outfitted for use by people. I also loved seeing all the happy dogs frolicking off leash. And there were some interesting war bunker ruins to boot.

We'll definitely be coming back when the weather in nicer to take advantage of the large expanse of grass by the sea for a picnic.

    A great park that has
    views of
    trees and forest
    ocean and ships
    historic forts and guns
    and very large cranes.

One of the nicest urban parks you will find anywhere. Point Pleasant is almost 200 acres but feels much larger because there is so much to see and do.

Some trials follow the water where you can watch the ships or get gorgeous views of the ocean in every direction. Other paths wind into the forest by fir trees and a menagerie of plants, eventually up to the strange looking Prince of Wales Tower at the summit. Side trails go off in many different directions and frequently end up at old fortifications that still are scatter around. Canada seems to have a thing a for old cannon. It seems you can't walk for more than a few minutes in any direction without bumping into one. Point Pleasant is no exception; some old big guns are proudly displayed here.

At any time of the year you will see people hiking, biking, yaking, skating, skiing or walking their dogs. Many events are held in the park and Shakespearean plays are frequently performed.

Most people wouldn't think that Nova Scotia would have to worry about hurricanes but In 1993 the park and area was devastated by Hurricane Juan. The memory of the storm is still strong and people in the city talk about it almost with reverence.

Point Pleasant is one of those rare places that can be bustling with people and activity and still remain peaceful and serene. The forest, ocean, history and interesting people doing enjoyable things combine for a wonderful park. Even watching the gigantic cranes silently dance and sway in the shipyard below the park only adds to the fun and atmosphere.

I don't think there has been anything more devastating to me than seeing Point Pleasant Park pre- and post-Juan. What was once a lush forest to explore felt like a pre-construction business park for a little while there but our city's finest park has pulled through and is clearly hellbent on being the Whitney Houston of our outdoor spaces - always a classic no matter what hard times its been through. Wait - does Cher make more sense there? I don't know...take your pick. You get what I mean.

Point Pleasant has everything you could ever want in an outdoor space - hours of trails, historical forts and structures that will have even the biggest sticks-in-the-mud daydreaming, gorgeous views over the water, massive fields for ultimate Frisbee, and off-leash trails for canine companions. It's no wonder that it's always packed with runners, walkers, yogis, and quarterbacks alike. Add on special events like Shakespeare by the Sea that runs all summer and you have a weekly destination that'll keep you out in the great outdoors.

So why not a five-star? I wish that the park could clarify its loosely enforced rules particularly when it comes to dogs. Simply put, some trails are off-leash, others aren't. While Shubie Park on the other side of the bridge has clear markers to keep people happy no matter what activity brought them in that day, Point Pleasant can feel a little haphazard when joggers are trying to avoid overzealous pooches at every pass. Make it easier to know where you stand, and everyone will be much better off.

Truly one of our favorite places to meander. Seriously, all though there's many an athlete that passes us by, we love to leisurely take in the views. Note I said views - as in more than one. forest-lined paths, beach with sand (of course swimming is out of the question, but we can pretend), views of the harbor cranes or out to the mouth of the Atlantic, the little isthmus with sailboats parked...well, I could go on forever.

Not sure which parking aspect I like more - down near the port where you can get a closeup view of freighters being loaded and unloaded, not to mention a snack, or the higher border where you can park and pick up a delicious ice cream cone at Point Pleasant Grocery before or after your walk. Either way, it's a delightful way to pass the day.

Visits to this serene spot have been a Sunday tradition of mine for years now. I first came here during my first year at Dal (many moons ago),  and I was so intrigued by the scenic beauty of the park, and the vast trails readily accessible, that I soon made Point Pleasant a part of my weekly running/cycling route.

Point pleasant is a pristine place, with it's trails encompassed with hundreds upon hundreds of massive trees (though notably lessened by the wrath of Juan, which is a real shame), and overlooking a sparkling waterfront. It's the perfect place to escape the mayhem of everday life and just relax while taking in the beauty of nature.

The park is like a natural, scenic playground for people of all walks of life.  Athletic types of all ages will enjoy the wide array of challenging and stimulating trails for jogging and cycling, while others will enjoy a relaxing stroll among the trees and beaches.

This park is an equally welcome retreat for our canine companions who. Permitted to roam freely on certain park grounds, dogs can enjoy playful activity and socialization with other puppies (not to mention the abundance of trees to sniff!).  I've been bringing my little guy here for years, and he's made friends with a number of other dogs at the park.

Bottom line: an absolute must-visit for any Haligonian. Halifax is truly fortunate to have such beautiful spaces as Point Pleasant, and it's worthwhile to take a break from crazy urban life to chill out on the trails.

Point Pleasant Park is a Halifax landmark.  No matter what section of the city you live in, Point Pleasant Park is everyone's neighbourhood park.

Walking and cycling trails have been carved through the lush forest lands, although it's nowhere near as treed as it was before Hurricane Juan came through and decimated the standing trees.  Before that, there was a beetle invasion that caused a lot of deadfall.

But even with these hurdles, Point Pleasant Park has remained a vibrant user-friendly space in all weather.  It's one of the few places where you can walk your dog off-leash (only in designated areas, please!) and not face censure for it.

If you're interested in drama, Shakespeare by the Sea has made this their home for several years.  Plays are offered most days;  check their website for details ( http://www.shakespeare... ).

I decided to take a little stroll towards the ocean one beautiful afternoon.  I started walking through Point Pleasant Park in the direction of the ocean, but soon got a little lost trying to manoeuvre through all the pathways in the park.

And getting lost in here was almost better than making it to the ocean.  It was such a pretty walk through the forest-like interior and it was extremely peaceful.  I only passed a couple of groups of dog-walkers the whole hour I was walking.  Each time I passed someone, though, they were always pleasant and smiled and gave me a little hello.  I guess everyone is there just to enjoy nature, which is why they're so nice.

I finally did make it to the beautiful ocean view, which was just as lovely as the walk.  You can sit pretty much anyone along all the rocks that line the shore and not be disturbed by a single soul.  If you're looking to get away and just be with yourself and your thoughts, this is definitely the place to do it.  I recommend bundling up, though, as it can get a little chili by the water.

    Tis the season....

Spring is here and I am more than eager to get my run on. Point Pleasant is always a great spot to escape city landscapes and roam freely with nature. Judging by its deep forests and trail opportunity, you'd never guess its place on the outskirts of our very own South End, Halifax.

Simply put, its just a great destination to get out and get moving. There are lots of twists, turns and new routes to explore. Some areas are canopied with trees, while others are open, overlooking the water. And if its just a leisurely breath of fresh air you crave, there are benches and grassed areas to sit and chill. During the summer it can get quite busy, especially on the weekends. But its all good... everyones there for basically the same thing. There's a collective appreciation for the good days, and we need more of that around if you ask me.

If you're up for a physical challenge, there are trails that boast some pretty good hills as well. Great for interval work, and just adds more option for a workout.

Great for exercise, healthy minds and vitamin D.

Point Pleasant Park is the largest forested park on the Halifax peninsula, and also the park plagued the most in recent years by a number of different misfortunes.

First there were a number of trees (and by a number I mean hundreds) that fell during hurricane Juan that ended up closing the park while paths and entrances were cleared. More recently a beetle infestation threatened the trees of the park again.

Despite the hardship Point Pleasant remains one of the best places to experience the outdoors when in Halifax. When I have time and the weather permits I take my neighbours dogs to run around and play, there are lots of other dogs around though so it can be tough at times to make sure they don't get a little aggressive.

Point Pleasant is a staple in this city, and makes the tasks of exercising and taking care of pets enjoyable, if the unpredictable Nova Scotian weather allows.

    A forest in the city!

Point Pleasant Park is great for every kind of person. Whether you are a runner, dog walker, sightseer or a couple looking to take a romantic stroll, Point Pleasant is here for you. They also have the infamous Shakespeare By The Sea which performs, you guessed it, Shakespeare plays in the park.

Point Pleasant Park is large enough so that it doesn't feel crowded and faces the water no matter what part of the park you are at! The park is at least a few hundred years ago and used to be a military bastion. As you walk through the woods in the park, you will find cannons, old brick and cement buildings, forts and information about what they were and how old they are.

I love this park! It is a great place to get away from the downtown hustle and bustle. And it is only about a twenty minute walk from downtown Halifax. You can sit on the rocks and watch ships go by as they come in and out of Halifax from the Atlantic Ocean. If you are a dog walker, loving couple, cyclist, runner or someone who wants to simply get away from it all, head to Point Pleasant. I guarantee you'll be pleased.

Point Pleasant Park is a large forested park filled with winding trails that are great for running, walking, and in some parts, cycling.

Local dog owners appreciate the many off-leash trails where dogs are allowed to run, sniff, and play freely (just don't forget to pick up!).

Cyclists are welcome on the main trails from Monday to Friday, but are not permitted in the park on weekends, They are also asked to stay on trails and not go off-road, to avoid destroying the delicate ecological balance of the park.

The park is a runners' mecca, if not for the challenging hills and natural trails, then for the view: there's a beautiful trail that loops along the water's edge with a view of the harbour and the many ships that arrive and depart daily.

If you're feeling a little less energetic and just looking for a rock or a bench to sit on and contemplate life, you'll find that here, as well.

Ahhhh nature, it's hard to believe you exist in the city. It's even harder to believe you exist in the abundance you do in Point Pleasant Park. Located on the cities southern tip, Point Pleasant Park is a great spot for those of you looking to get out of the city (without leaving the convenience of the city!).

The park has seen better days - a series of storms and hurricanes have brought down a number of trees leaving bare patches where dense wilderness once stood, but it's still very scenic and worth your time.

This is an ideal spot to walk your dog, go for a run, take some photos and pretend you're lost in the woods. I've also seen people LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) here and yes, it is just as hilarious as you can imagine.

So come down, check out the little beach (Don't you dare step foot in the water), throw the ol' ball around and enjoy all the nature our fair city has to offer. You will not disappointed!

I guess one of the great things about Point Pleasant Park is that it's one of the few places you can go in downtown Halifax where you can enjoy Halifax at it's fullest without any noise, crowds, or marketing clutter. Point Pleasant Park is truly beautiful. Of course, it was even more beautiful before Hurricane Juan hit, but it's peacefulness and serenity makes up for any damage that was done.

I've jogged many trails at Point Pleasant Park, gone on many leisure walks, and even spent many of my University days there nestled on a benches, reading chapter upon chapter, and text book upon text book.

To me, Point Pleasant Park is much more than a park or a walking trail - It's nature, serenity, comfort and memories.... I guess it just goes to show that the best things in life are free.

Point Pleasant Park is a great place to go to relax, play, jog, walk.  You name it , you can do it.

You can take your family and enjoy a picnic. Play frisbee, sit on the rocks and watch the boats.

Go for a walk along the many trails. It is peaceful and full of life.

I spent a summer working in this wonderful nature-land, and although I may not have appreciated it fully at the time, I retrospectively am quite fond of the experience.

It is a wonderful park, boasting all of the necessary elements required to make for a lovely excursion: trees, water, grass, fields, animals, and paths. Yup, I think that's all the stuff you need to have a good time.

There are steep trails, great for biking down and challenging to bike back up, as well as lovely benches to sit and ponder your surroundings while you saunter along through the park. You can sit by the water in a gazebo and watch the sunset, or else run as fast as you can while getting in shape for your next marathon.

Whatever your motivation is for heading to Point Pleasant Park, you will indeed be satisfied, finding yourself surrounded by gorgeous scenery with the fresh salty air filling your lungs. With all of this lovely weather I recommend heading to the park early in the sunny season so that you can enjoy a less-populated jaunt. Ah bliss.

Point Pleasant Park back in the day was the place to be in the summer. Remembering that good old days when we used to swim in the water and play in the sand, then the breeze blew through the plentiful trees and the dogs ran freely. Many Sundays the park would be packed with people having picnics and family events with BB Q's. This still does go on but the rules have increased.

Walking through the little hidden hide aways it is a great escape anytime. Many hidden treasures are located through the park with alot of history. It is nice to sit on one of the bench's and looking out over the harbour watch the boats.

Over the years times have not been so good to PPP with all the trees that have been cut down or not being able to swim in the water. Something needs to be done about this so that we are able to enjoy PPP to the max like the good old days.

I feel very lucky to have lived exclusively in cities which have big, beautiful parks associated with them. Point Pleasant isn't huge, but neither is Halifax. They suit each other very well. The size is great, in my mind. Easy to navigate, but also crisscrossed with enough paths to keep you entertained. Bikes are allowed on weekdays, but not on weekends. (I learned this lesson in a regrettable way - unaware of the weekend bike ban I rode mine in on a Saturday morning. It's significantly busier then, and I ran into a poor dog that darted across my path. Luckily he was a big guy and took it well, as did his owners. I felt terrible, though, and am SURE to always follow the bike rules now that I know them!)

Point Pleasant is great because it's easy to access, offers great respite from the city streets, and is so obviously well loved by residents here. Hurricane Juan kicked some ass in the forests here, but recovery is happening every day, and the park remains beautiful despite sustaining major damage. Kids (and goofy adults like me) love the remains of buildings you can find scattered around the park, and everyone will enjoy the fresh air.
