Review from Sue A.
I had never had Dutch pancakes called poffertjes before I tried these babies and I am hooked! This was easily the culinary highlight of my two week Island holiday. And I wasn't the only member of my family sneaking off to enjoy a plate of these treats whenever I got a chance.
The shop where this magical food is created is small, decorated in a black and white motif with charming chandeliers and equipped with a counter and a special cast iron pancake grill. The pancakes take a few minutes to cook and you can stand inside the tiny shop or wait outside on Charlottetown's Victoria Row and watch the process through the large window. Either way, the experience is unique on PEI and the end result is amazing.
The chef told me that he is Dutch and he uses an old authentic Dutch recipe. Wherever this recipe came from, these poffertjes thingys are super delicious. I was also in awe of the big hunk of butter used to cook these things--about a 28 lb. block. That in itself is an amazing sight.
For about $4, you get ten of these crepe-like discs, slathered with butter and icing sugar. While the sugar makes them sweet, the crepe base balances the flavour so it is not sickly sweet. They melt in your mouth.
The shop keeps it simple, focusing on mini pancakes. The other item on the menu is coffee.
Definitely try them if you are in the area. They make a perfect post-theatre treat or rainy day consolation prize.
