This Planet Organic really makes me wish that Calgary's Planet Organics would step up. I visited this Planet Organic for the first time on my way home to Calgary, to stock up on some snacks for the drives. They had soooo many more vegan options available I was floored. Vegan Carob muffins! Tofu egg salad sandwiches! Many varieties that were the same in the deli but a few additional items. I was so stoked that I spent probably half an hour in awe, deciding what to choose to take home with me.
Eventually I settled on some vegan carob muffins, organic apples, sundried tomato hummus, and a couple salads from the deli. There were many tills available for use and the staff were all very friendly that I encountered, which is refreshing as I avoided Calgary's Planet Organic for many months after having a planetorganicstalker that would not go away.
Everytime I step into one of my own local Planet Organic Markets I get a little bummed out at how much less fantastic it seems.

If Planet Organic could actually deliver upon everything it sets out to do, it would be awesome. But I've had more issues with the store than I've had positive experiences.
On a couple of occasions, I've seen nothing but wilted vegetables on the shelf. At other times, they are completely out of the vegetables I've come to buy. And the tofu, and all of the other goodies. What good is a supermarket if you can't keep it stocked? I want to be able to rely on Planet Organic to purchase Green Cuisine Tofu. But apparently, I can't.
Additionally, I've found some workers at the store to be incredibly friendly (almost too friendly), but I've found that other workers are miserable and frustrated. Like any other supermarket or Shoppers Drug Mart, Planet Organic enables you to get some cash back, but my checkout person only gave me cash back begrudgingly.
I like their queuing system, which is very similar to Wal-Mart's express line, where everybody stands in one line and the next available check out person will help you check out.
I also feel like Planet Organic charges its patrons a premium because "organic" is trendy. I don't get this feeling at Earth's General Store, where I feel that I'm paying the high prices due to product cost and the store's convenience for me. -

Planet Organic - you and I have a love/hate relationship.
I love you for what you're doing for the Edmonton local/organic scene - supporting suppliers who honestly put their life and love into the products they believe in etc, and helping people in Edmonton who want to eat local/organ/responsible/raw/vegan etc. You do a good thing for Edmonton. You REALLY do.
But good GOD. Lower your friggin prices. I have a disposable income that I can pay for premium groceries and healthy items, but seriously - your prices are atrocious. You sell 3 tbsp of "in-store made" salsa for $5 bucks. Seriously? WTF? What are you thinking? Your prices on deli items are horrific. Also, there is no reason in the world why raspberries should cost $8.99 per 1/2 pint. I don't care if Jesus himself harvested them. Give your head a shake. You just recently had massive financial problems, which I imagine is a result of pricing your loyal customers out of their comfort zone.
You have a good following in Edmonton, Planet Organic - don't screw it up by taking advantage of them by price gouging. We'll only respond by going elsewhere, which means your immediate demise.
Give fair prices, and we'll reward you with business. If you don't, the market will correct itself and another supplier will step up. -

**3.5 stars**
This is the first time I have stepped into this store and I am impressed. They have a large selection of organic foods, health food items, a large deli section and everything looks so fresh and inviting. I came here for some coconut water to boost up my potassium intake before running the Canadian Derby Marathon. I was surprised that they had so many brands of coconut water to choose from. I could have stayed in this store to browse some more, but because of time constraints, I will have to come back some other time. This store is comparable to Whole foods in the US. It's lay out inside is very similar to Whole Foods. Hum, I wonder if they are affiliated in some way.
I took 1.5 star away because one of the shelf stocker saw me taking photos of the coconut water I was buying and stopped me. I told her that I was buying them and the cartons were already in my cart but still she won't let me take pics of what were in my cart! She was kinda rude!! :( -

All of the produce sold at Planet Organic is 100% organic, and a lot of the grocery items are organic to some degree. If not, they still seem to fill a niche market, so if you're looking for something hard to find you'll likely find it here. Unfortunately, with a niche market comes high prices. Some of the products here are barely affordable. They do have pretty decent sales that rotate every few months, though, so shopping here is still a viable option.
Specific / unique products I love from Planet Organic:
1. Local organic milk, especially Vital Green Farms! Homogenized milk tastes off to me so a non-homogenized selection makes me very happy!!
2. Bles-Wold Yogurt... the vanilla flavor is amazing.
3. Very lemon-y organic lemons. (They are way more potent than your average lemon!)
4. Cheese, in general. I quite love the cheese they sell here, they have a lot of brands that are not available in the regular supermarkets.
5. Frozen cherries.
6. Great bagels, though they're not made every day.
7. "Pirate's Booty" -- junk food similar to Cheetos but better tasting and less bad for you.
One thing to keep in mind is that outside of the produce section, not everything is 100% organic. You still need to give the products as much scrutiny as those from mainstream supermarkets, so shopping here doesn't really take that stress away.
My final verdict is that Planet Organic is awesome if you can do some of your shopping elsewhere. I split my grocery list between two or three different stores in order to get the most affordable experience while still buying organic. It's definitely got some products that are well priced and delicious, and is worth working into your weekly grocery routine. -

Planet Organic. You and I need to sit down and have a talk.
I have been meaning to break it to you but words get in the way. I want to love you, I really do, but we have to work on our relationship because.. I found someone new, and we have a long distance relationship?
OK OK. Here is how it is. Planet organic is a GREAT concept. Fresh local and organic produce, and healthy alternatives to your run of the mill blah grocery store. You make Safeway look like a dictatorship with your fancy free leftist vibe BUT I expect more from you. Yes more.
In the past year or so I was introduced to Whole Foods, care of Los Angeles California. My mind was blown and it left me thinking "why not Edmonton"? Why doesn't Edmonton deserve food like yours, fruits so vine ripe, and prices that make it affordable to eat like humans should. Rows upon rows of steaming trays in the "deli" section filled with organic variety dishes. Vegan, Veg, free range, breakfast, lunch, dinner, curry desserts, all made daily and ready for an on the go busy person who only has time to stop in quickly, fill up their little take out box of goodies, and serve a healthy dinner for their family at home. Even better, you can eat your deli pick right there in the store in a cafe like setting. Don't even get me started on the variety of foods available in the grocery section. On your way out of the store you can pick up biodegradable utensils, or send your used containers into the many choices for recycling bins.
What ever it is, Whole Foods has you beat, and has me wishing Planet O woulc do more with their potential. PS Please fix the sticker that peeled off of your front window. I keep imagining a giant lobster claw on that lady's missing arm.. you know the one. I'll be patiently waiting for a 24 hour new and improved version of yourself. -

I was in Planet Organic today, and I discovered the best hummus ever! It's called Gs hummus, and it's in a round container. Their other hummus varieties are in "square" containers (meaning they are totally lame)--these don't taste nearly as good. I used to be crazy about Organic Roots hummus, but when they downsized, the hummus disappeared! I was so sad, but now I am happy again. I've tried to make my own hummus, but it never has it tasted as good as Gs Hummus. It's so good, that I ate over half the contain in 4 hours. It's okay though, because it's healthy!
I was also pleased with the Planet Organic, because they had some really reasonable sale prices. Mesa Sunrise gluten-free waffles were on sale for $3.29, and at Superstore they are $4.99--a total rip-off! But two samosas, on the other hand cost $3.59--too much. Even though Planet Organic is still usually expensive, I'm starting to like it more and more. -

Out of all organic stores i've been to in both edmonton and calgary, this one is a better one. There is way more selection compared to PO in Calgary and the dt location. Again, prices are way too much.
However, out of my experiences planet organic is just okay. I have been to whole foods store in Canada, U.K, and U.S and this store and a few others don't compare to the various selections and space Whole foods has. The prices in whole foods I find are ten times better compared to the hugely overpriced planet organic.
Whenever I make a trip to the states- I try to stock up over there...I find there are way more selection of beauty care products, foods, wines etc. at whole foods-- at great prices that I cannot find at planet organic.
At whole foods, I have a better variety of organic make up selection- and someone who knows something about organic make up to help me..at planet organic I have to book in advance to have someone help properly with the available organic make up there. Most people in the planet organic make up section cannot apply it on me to try or answer most of my questions...
In summary, I think planet organic is okay- but it's one of the only few we have available here. There is not much comparison for organic shoppers to know of...so of course, some may think planet organic is best thing since sliced bread. Especially if they have not experienced whole foods market.
There is not much competition right now for this company. But with the way their high pricing is going- I am excited to see what other organic competition will rise up in the future...cough...please let it be whole foods...cough.. -

It's tough to review a place that you are definitely a "regular" at. And not just because you suspect the clerks know you (and hence may take it to heart should you say something unfavorable), but also because it feels biased. So here is my disclaimer - Planet Organic in Old Strathcona is my grocery store. I go there regularly, at least once a week. I buy most of my food there. They feed me. So there! I got the disclaimer out! Now, I can tell you why I shop there...
It's not because I'm still paying off my student loans. My evolution to eating mostly organic took years, as I transitioned from student life to "I cannot believe I've been working for over 6 years" professional life. As we all know - it ain't cheap to eat organic. And Planet is not the cheapest. If you're on a tighter budget and still want to eat organic, it may be prudent to price compare with Save-On down the block. They have an extensive selection of organic produce, dairy, and canned goods. Whenever I stop by the Planet on Saturday and follow with a stop at Save-On, I see a familiar face or two; lots of people synergize on the proximity of the two stores, and buy some things at the Planet and some at Save-On.
It's tough to compare prices without being specific, but I will list one that I know (for sure) you will find cheaper somewhere else. Those tasty Rocky Mountain (out of Canmore) frozen pizzas are at least a couple of dollars cheaper at the Italian Market than then they are at the Planet. That's one example. I'm sure you can find more.
So if it isn't price, what does the Planet at Strathcona offer you? For starters - a decent deli. As any person living alone knows, even if you love to cook and are conscious of what you eat and why, it sometimes feels like a whole lot of "too much" trouble. Well... Planet has got a great 'Hail to the Kale' salad, cilantro salsa, pakoras, Moroccan couscous, and crab cakes (to name a few of my favourite items) ready-made and waiting for your single self. Fast food, not GMO'ed.
They also have service. When you're browsing, sporting a confused look on your face, and you make eye contact with a clerk, who is merely walking by... They will (9.5 out of 10 times) ask you "is there anything I can help you find?" And if you do confess to needing help (as I have many a times), they will (9.5 out of 10 times) know where to go and take you there (personally!). I don't know if you tried this move at Superstore lately, but the results are not as reproducible. So yes - service counts! And the staff also genuinely seem to enjoy each other (lots of smiles and hugs), without ignoring their customers. So the atmosphere is positive. And this is nice; it feels welcoming and not impersonal or pulse-racing. I'm such a sucker for a small, cozy space. It's that European upbringing of mine.
And they have selection! Where else would you find over two dozen different kinds of bulk flour? I'm not just talking chickpea, soy, or tapioca, or even quinoa, sweet rice, or kamut. I'm talking - teff! Teff flour! Where else could you find that? Now, I cannot admit to having ever used teff flour, or knowing what it tastes like for that matter... But at least I know where to find it! And now you do too. You know where to find that one odd thing that you gourmet-ish recipe calls for - it's at Planet Organic at Strathcona. And if you look lost, don't worry - the clerks will ask you if you need help. And before you leave, get some "Hail to the Kale" salad and smile at the clerk. Kale is magically nutritious, and so are smiles. -

The first time I went into Planet Organic, I was astounded by the prices of the organic produce. But then I had to remind myself that I was in Vancouver for awhile, and it tends to be cheaper over there.
I came here today to see if they had any coconut oil, and sure enough they did. It was actually cheaper here than at Organic Roots, so I think I'll come here for it next time.
I like that they have everything here for anyone who chooses to follow a strictly organic lifestyle. They not only have organic grocery, but also have skincare and beauty products (including makeup), household cleaning items, and hygiene products. There's also a couple aisles full of ethnic foods, mainly South Asian.
I might start coming to Planet Organic more often, since healthy is always a better way to go. Certain items are about the same price, maybe even cheaper, than in health aisles at regular grocery stores. -

Planet Organic make sure that everything it carries is, as the name states, organic.
Because everything is organic here you will find out that it is more expensive compared to regular grocery stores but if you have made the choice to live organically then you won't have any problems with the prices. The staff is really helpful and able to answer most questions you have.
They have great cleaning products here as well that require mainly water instead of those other cleaning chemicals that poison the air. Even if you aren't into being 100% organic all the time this is a good place for even a few items that you may need. -

Considering the ethos, you'd think there would be more of an emphasis on supporting local (as in Albertan) producers. Nope! But there is a good variety of product, from produce, to cleaning and household supplies, to beauty and ready-made foods. Great place to find a solid lunch but disappointing as far as offering locally produced products.

I couldn't live without Planet Organic! I made the choice last summer to eat as Organic/Local as I could, and this place is a regular grocery stop because of it. The produce prices are bit more expensive than a regular grocery store, but it is generally worth it. I realized the difference last week when I compared grapefruits. I bought a grapefruit from a regular grocery store and one from Planet Organic. The regular grocery grapefruit was watery tasting but huge. The Planet Organic grapefruit was $0.30 more, but wonderfully sweet, tart and pulpy. It was truly a treat! Planet Organic also has the BEST Ginger Snaps and Pumpkin Cookies anywhere! They also have quick to go food including Spring Rolls, Pakoras and Grilled Tofu. Yum! This is a great stop for anyone looking for healthy great tasting food!

Reminds me of Whole foods in the US. It's a good place for any form of a healthy option one might be looking for. Organic fresh food is available for purchase. A small, but decent collection of cheese, fresh cream cheese, hummus and other such dips dress the counters in the food section. The hummus is by far the best I've had in Edmonton! They have a good collection of organic coffees from around the world, if it interests one. The frozeon and preserved foods available are also quite tasty and healthy (lower in sodium content) compared to other store bought preserved foods. From a variety of fresh produce, tasty and healthy cereals, nuts and grains, teas from all over the world, to protein shakes and much more, the store is complete for all your shopping needs. It's well located for families with young ones or in the family way. There's an expecting mother's clothing store right next door and a children's bookstore close by.
They also have baking/cooking classes. You can sign up online for their newsletter with updates coming in your inbox on weekly activites, discount coupons and more.
The only downside - I don't think it has warmed up to the average Edmontonian yet. Of course, if you have a family of four and you'd exclusively come here for groceries, it could be too expensive. Hope they get more busy in the years to come - might drive down the costs! -
Review from Maria F.
I visit Planet Organic every week. I never stock up at this place because organic produce is very expensive, but I do treat myself to some organic fruit, vegetables and dairy. Planet Organic has everything you heart may desire: meat, paultry, grains, nuts, baked goods, skin care, vitamins, tea, coffee, packaged food, cleaning products, etc. Here I was able to purchase a water filter for my shower and lavender filled sachets to use in the drier. I really like their selection of herbal teas and dietary supplements.
Since I cannot afford to buy only organic food, I try to at least purchase organic lettuce, kale, blueberries, apples and all dairy products (the idea of consuming milk from the cows pumped with hormones scares the hell out of me), and the taste difference between organic and non-organic produce is significant! Fruit and vegetables taste crisp and fresh; milk is creamier. I advice everybody to slowly but surely introduce organic products into their diets.
One cute little detail makes me like Planet Organic even more - the cashier puts your purchases into a paper bag with handles instead of the usual plastic bags. As far as I know, there are no other stores in Edmonton that do that. For me, this makes my trip to Planet Organic a little more special:)
