guess not surprisingly no one's ever written here---it's like a gem hidden inside the Kits/Cornwall area.
Has the best potato salad i've ever experienced--seriously, i know it's only potato salad. Just the right texture, as it's cut into flakes/layers, and the smooth, buttery, garlic...wow....
It's also a retail/deli, so you'll see some European (probably mostly German) stuff there too. Also have sandwiches, croissants, etc. in their display case, and you know it's fresh w/ its open kitchen in the back...
It's a neat experience b/c you can browse up the aisles and plenty of seating too...1 Previous Review: Show all »

The very fact that there are those two adorable little dots above the 'o' in Plöger is enough to give it them four stars. BUT fortunately for everyone involved (including you), diacritics aren't all they've got going on.
Homemade granola, preserves, soups, pastries and sandwiches, PLUS countless other grocery-ish items like European cheese, chocolates and weird packaged candies scattered throughout this minimally-stocked German deli / grocer makes for a pretty sweet lunch stop when wandering the mean streets of West 1st and Cypress.
Ja, meine freunde, Plöger may not be for the budget-conscious, but it's a little slice of German charm cake right there in Kitsilano.Listed in: Kickin' It In Kits

I had a Groupon for $20 which got me to the store. Some items are over-priced so I just won't buy them here any more. What I will be back for is the small selection of pâté that they carry. The apricot one is my fave! From what I can tell it's made in North Vancouver. At about $5 a slab it's tasty. Their feta stuffed olives aren't too bad at $8.95 for a decent portion. Their Swiss emmental isn't badly priced either.
For about $25 you could pick up enough to have a picnic with a friend or two. -

* Microwaves should be illegal *
I was craving a schnitzel sandwich something along the lines of what you get at Rubenbauer Gastronomie (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) for a light lunch.
But things didn't go well. Instead of a nice freshly made schnitzel, they reheated the schnitzel in a microwave. Microwaves should be made illegal in any restaurant. The schnitzel itself was overly salted and was way too thick. Just not satisfying on any level.
It was served on pretzel bread, which was slightly past its prime. They apparently do not bake their own pretzel bread here, it comes from a bakery in North Vancouver.
Overall this didn't scratch the schnitzel sandwich itch. Wait, that sounds like some exotic German disease. Anyhoo.....Listed in: Which wich is which?, Vancouver European Food

The food is prepared well and tasty but it can be slow and expensive. If I go back it will be for takeout. I feel like I am bothering the owner. She seems stressed every visit.

Hell ya! If pretzels (like the ones at Swiss Bakery) hold a special key to your heart - you have to try their pretzel sandwich! Ham, lettuce, tomato, cole slaw (yup, I said slaw) and of course, a pretzel with the perfect amount of salt! I gobbled it up AND licked the plate! Good thing I asked for it to go, it was a messy eat, better attempted in the comforts and privacy of one's own car/home!
The selection of foodstuffs might not be mighty, but they're good quality and completely worth checking out - but make sure you save a sammie for me! -

This new specialty store on 1st took over the old fruit & veg store and gave it a much needed makeover inside. They are still super new, but will specialize in German deli offerings. The space looks lovely and once they get all their offerings, it will be a wonderful (and hopefully long term) addition to the hood!
