This was an amazing find for us last night after bar-hopping Nanaimo. We really scored: Who doesn't want deep fried EVERYTHING after a night of drinking?
We had mozza sticks, deep fried zucchini, deep fried pickles, and deep fried icecream for dessert and I suggest you have the same. -

Delicious fish and chips, big portions, decent price. Their tartar sauce is tasty, their hand cut fries awesome. I was sharing with a friend so we got the medium poutine. It was huge, even for two. I would go small for one person, unless you haven't eaten in a few days.
I didn't have it because I'm not currently looking to have a heart attack from artery clogged goodness, but they have a pretty extensive deep fried dessert menu, including a deep fried nanaimo bar. -

Poutine= yes!
Burger= no!
Being from Quebec, I was pretty hesitant to believe that a local place called 'Pirate Chips' could attempt to make a decent Poutine.... wrong!
They did a pretty decent job! Real cheese curds & all.
My boyfriend is somewhat a 'cheeseburger-connaisseur' however & the one he ordered he found (the patty) to be pretty bland. It tasted frozen or maybe even freezer-burnt. Unfortunately he'll stick to Wendy's. It's cheaper & tastes fresher. -

Fun, friendly place. Great fish & chips & the best milkshakes in town! I'm almost embarrassed to admit to having tried the deep fried Mars bar as well - it was artery clogging delicious!!!

If you like fish and chips, you'll like Pirate Chips.
I ordered a two-piece cod with fries-turned-poutine. This I shared with my sister for $13.75. Sounds pricey? Wait til you see the portions. First, the poutine came out (quickly too!). It was hot, fresh, and delicious. The gravy was excellent. Not bland and not too salty. The curds were fresh too. Angela (owner?) was not stingy on either one. Not only was this a lot of poutine, but it was enough to fill both me and my sister. This place has the best poutine, hands down.
Then the fish came out. Served with homemade tartar sauce (excellent) and slices of lemon, the fish was a decent size (about the size of a woman's hand). The batter on the fish was none like I've tried before. It was crisp, light, and very tasty. Though you know it's fried and bound to be oil-filled, the fries and the fish were not greasy in taste. Again, the best battered fish I've ever had.
There is also vinegar spray bottles on the side for you to enjoy with your food. If my memory serves me well, there are 3-4 flavors of vinegar. I had the garlic malt vinegar, which was delightful. They also have garlic mayonnaise, which Angela told us to eat with the poutine. Sounds weird and is definitely fatty, but it truly is very good.
Angela is the next perk about the restaurant. When you walk in, she greets you with a grand 'hello!' and talks to you as though she's known you for a while. She is honest, fast, and just wants to make sure that you're loving what you're eating. For me and my sister, she succeeded.
The only downside is that the restaurant is small (I think eight bar stools are available indoors) and it's easy to miss. Angela said that they used to have a life size pirate statue hanging out outside, which I think would be a great landmark to find the restaurant. However the city officials took it away because they said it was a traffic hazard (how lame is that?).
So if you're craving fish and chips and you're wanting it to taste good, stop by Pirate's Chips. You won't regret it. -

I used to eat here a few times a month years ago when I worked in the downtown core. Easy walk. My coworkers and I enjoyed it a lot.
