Review from Paul S.

Pilot's is a favorite of mine. The decor is a little tacky, but the food is excellent across the board, and the staff is friendly. Great wings, excellent burgers and sandwiches, and perfectly-prepared steaks. My favorite is the chicken parmesan. Their daily specials are great bargains too. This place is a hidden gem, just down the street from NSCC's waterfront campus.

Maybe my experience isn't what usually happens at Pilot's Pub?
First impressions- the restaurant is very dated inside decor wise but that's part of the charm that made us want to go in for a bite. I love diners and after getting a glowing recommendation from someone we decided to give it a try.
Very casual type of place, the sign said seat yourselves and we did just that, in a booth towards the back of the restaurant, this place is huge and has nice views from the large picture windows. The only issue with the atmosphere was the temperature, it was cold and our waitress even commented as she took our drink order that it was cold in there but it never got any warmer while we were there.
There were two waitresses working from what I could see and they were busy with a large group and several other tables consisting of mostly families. The servers were friendly and smiley which was nice. There wasn't much of a pub vibe, there were kids in high chairs and the waitresses brought them spill-proof kids cups and colouring sheets with crayons. This place seems like more of a family-style restaurant but maybe it's happening on a Friday night? The service was pretty good considering the other groups but we did have a bit of a wait. However, I don't mind waiting on a Sunday afternoon.
I would have waited twice as long without any issues if the food had been good but unfortunately it really wasn't. We split an appetizer of spinach dip that comes with homemade potato chips and tortilla chips. The dip was piping hot but very bland, hardly any flavour, the potato chips were overcooked and dark brown, the tortillas were also fried, greasy and cold.
For our mains we ordered the fish and chips, there were large pieces of fish but these were as overcooked as the potato chips and VERY oily. The fries were shoestring, pretty standard and were also overcooked. I think the oil probably could have used a change which could be why everything was so extra dark and crispy.
I hate that my first review on Yelp isn't a good one but I have to say- I won't be going back there anytime soon.
