I don't have barbeque quite often, so I can't really speak for this place as a true BBQ lover, but I did love this place. It was the first time I'd tried Fried Chicken and Waffles, and I have to say, it was such an amazing combo. For just that and for blessing me with my first Chicken+Waffles experience, I have to give this place a whopping 4 stars.

But of course, some cons were as follows:

    1) One of my chicken pieces wasn't cooked fully through, so the very center tasted a little bloody. Kind of a turn off, but the outside and fully cooked areas were great.
    2) The pulled pork tasted OK--nothing super special, but not bad I guess if you're craving BBQ
    3) They forgot my order. (But of course they were nice about it so no big)

So for the above mentioned reasons, this got bumped down to 4-stars, but still not bad. Plus I did like the atmosphere, and it's one of the better places I'd have to say to eat in Victoria.

After our sushi lunch, bf and I decided to take out an order of pulled pork poutine from Pig BBQ Joint. Although Seattle has poutine, I wanted to try it in Canada, as it is a Canadian specialty.

I must say, it definitely did not disappoint! The pulled pork was tender and flavorful and it went very well with the gravy and chunks of cheese curds on top of crispy, thick cut fries.  I usually like fries plain with only salt and I do not enjoy chili cheese fries because I feel like they ruin the fries. However, I enjoyed the flavors of the pulled pork, gravy, and cheese so much that I didn't mind that the fries were getting soggy.

So, it's not just us Americans who come up with artery clogging goodness; the Canadians do it too.  Canadian bacon is a joke, but they have redeemed themselves with poutine.  ;)

I have a mega hard time saying no to anything pork.  I think my strong affinity for it has something to do with the fact that I'm a Pig (Chinese astrology...woot woot!).  So faced with a breakfast conundrum this morning, I decided to drag HB to Pig, instead of Shine across the street, where more sensible breakfast solutions probably exist.  He was so hungry after conceding there was nothing to eat at his 'rents that he stopped caring whether he was having eggs or beef brisket for breakfast. Everything IS fair in love, war and hunger.  And beef brisket, slaw and cornbread it was, as well as a Pig breakfast sammich, which consisted of some kind of spiced pork sausage, tangy bbq sauce and an egg between two waffles.  Both were not bad.

And that's how I'm gonna end this review.  Not bad.  I always find myself conflicted with Pig.  I've been there more than I care to admit but haven't reviewed it 'til now.  Objectively speaking, it's not as "awesome" as some people believe it to be, but it is an "awesome" concept for variety-starved Victoria, especially because it's all "cool and kitschy" for this town.  Food is your run-of-the-mill bbq and I've had way better elsewhere.  In fact, the Smoken Bones Cookshack up in Langford makes better beef brisket, it's just not as cheap and perhaps as convenient to get to.

    Fantastic BBQ joint!

I had the smoked chicken sandwich with a side of delicious, thick-cut fries (perfect amount of salt and a liberal dusting of their special spice blend). The chicken was incredibly juicy and tender, and the mustard sauce added an amazing, flavorful kick.

I was with my family and they all had different dishes from the menu: the fried mac & cheese, pulled pork sandwich, and beef brisket sandwich. Everyone loved their food and raved about it after the meal concluded (there was also a good deal of raving during the meal, but the actual eating was mainly a silent affair - always a good sign).

My one complaint was their cornbread. I know that cornbread can range from savory accompaniment to practically dessert-level sweetness, and theirs definitely lies firmly in the former category... but still, i wish it were a touch sweeter all the same. I ended up not finishing it - really needs some honey or something in the recipe.

Oh, and I like the mason jar water glasses - a nice touch.

Definitely coming back and definitely talking this place up to all my friends and family!

Just okay. Went on a late Friday night and it was full of loud and intoxicated people. Chairs squeaked loudly on the floors. Very loud inside. Sitting outside on their patio would have been much quieter but then you wouldn't hear your order when it was ready.

Casual fast food like bbq joint where you order and they call you when your food is ready. Regular prices... For $29 including tax and 15% tip we got fried chicken with corm bread and beans, pulled pork sandwich and a beer.

Fried chicken came covered with a mayo like based sauce. Very crispy skin and some parts of the chicken was dry. Just ok. Wouldn't order again. Corn bread was not very moist and not very flavorful or sweet like it should be. Beans were hot and very saucy.

Pulled pork sandwich was very, very greasy. Not great but not bad. Inside, there was a some coleslaw as well.

It was just ok. Not healthy but not a place I would go for a " treat " meal either.

Monday Lunchtime - fairly limited for space inside, but outside area was useful as we had a stroller.
Beef brisket sandwich and pulled pork poutine tasted great, so we ordered the ribs and chicken for take out dinner.
The pulled pork and beans were the stars!

Good: Very good fried chicken, it's herby, crusty and moist. Well worth a visit for that. Good beans - could use a bit of apple in there for a true Southern flavour but still nice.

So-so: Cornbread (not sweet enough). Deep fried mac and cheese needs more life - some herbs perhaps.

Bad: Ribs don't taste smoked nor do they taste like anything beside their BBQ sauce. Ribs are supposed to taste like someone used their hands to rub a fresh spice mix into - I should taste paprika, brown sugar, chili powder, cayenne, old bay seasoning etc and I tasted NONE OF THIS. The BBQ spaghetti was terrible too but maybe that's why I haven't seen it on the menu since the summer.

I've eaten the BBQ from Canada's national champ and this ain't comparable at all. The champ makes you want to eat BBQ everyday for every meal and make you renounce your desire for healthy living. Pig does not make you sweat with the desire for a side of slow cooked pork that's been smoked with applewood.

Still, the fried chicken is the real deal and I'd return over and over for that.

Ordered the brisket sandwich and an iced tea, which came up to $8.  The brisket was soft and moist and was piled so high it was falling out of the bun.  mmm!  It could have used a bit more bbq sauce, but there's more bbq sauce at the condiment station anyways.  The iced tea was just the way I like it - not too sweet.
My friends ordered the pulled pork sandwich and the pulled pork poutine, and both really liked their meals.  The poutine is huge!  It could easily feed two people (although my friend is a champ and nearly finished it on her own).
It gets pretty hot in there with the summer sun shining in, but as someone who's perpetually cold, I'm not complaining!
I'll definitely come back and try out more of their menu!

    Pulled Pork Poutine.

I don't know what else to say.  Whenever I go back to the States, I crave poutine.  My one issue with poutine is that it is rather carb-heavy.  Enter Pig BBQ joint.  HELLO!

Walk up counter, yummy soda selection, plenty of seats to nosh on good pig eats...what else could you want?

I realize just how boring my reviews have gotten, but you really can't get better than PULLED PORK POUTINE.

Pig is a really solid 3 star joint.

They've been consistent from the get go and it's great they've been able to expand their menu since moving into the Atrium.

I've been quite torn about how to review Pig, because as much as I've enjoyed them over the years I rarely can bring myself to eat there. For those of you that care, there are really no healthy options. The feeling one gets after eating Pig is the equivalent of chowing down on Chinese buffet.

On my most recent visit I finally tried their pulled pork poutine. (When in Rome)... The curds were mostly not melted, which for me is a huge faux pas with poutine. The pulled pork, gravy and fries were all very good, but I wouldn't order it again. After having the amazing pulled pork poutine at the Superior with poached eggs to add sweetness, that is where I'll indulge in such a dish.

Their pulled pork sandwich would have to be my go to option in the future. I just never get to eat there with Hernandez around the corner.

Thank you Victoria yelpers for pointing me in this direction! Thinking that the "meal' version of the fried chicken would be over-the-top I opted to pick 2 pieces of chicken with beans and slaw (slightly cheaper than going with the 3 piece meal too, btw.)

The amount was just right for me, fresh from the ferry. Although there were a couple of sauce related nuances, that had they been done a little differently, I would have certainly celebrated Pig BBQ with a five-star.

One, the beans. When I saw beans on the menu, I got excited. But beans to me mean straight up beans in a gravy of sorts. The Pig's was more sauce than beans --more chili to be eaten with a spoon --than beans on a fork. Good, but just not what I had expected.

Two, the sauce on the chicken. If I had known better I would have asked for the dressing on the side. It made eating with my fingers a mess and drew away from the crispiness of the chicken. And if I'm going to go getting all fried chicken up - you'd better believe I'm eating the skin!

Next time, it'll be a pulled pork sandwich for me.

Good god.  This place is magnificent.  Definitely the best thing about Victoria.

I had the pulled pork poutine and the husband had the 1/2 pound of pulled pork with cornbread and slaw.  We each had a beer (Phillips beeres on taps, very reasonably priced pints!).

Why have I never seen pulled pork poutine on a menu before?  This was revolutionary.  I thought poutine was already a near-perfect dish - this puts it over the edge.  The fries were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle.  The gravy was super tasty and not too salty, and the pulled pork melted in my mouth.  Great ratio of cheese/gravy/pork to fries, too.  Seriously good food.

My husband's meal was also fantastic - the Pig Sauce is delicious, the cornbread was tasty and had great texture and the slaw was also great.

Simple concepts executed very well.  Love it.

We need one in Vancouver, please!

Always always have the special. Seriously. They run out so make sure you tuck into the special!  Today's was a beautiful "spicy pork sammi". It was on the soft sweetish bun topped with a fresh cut salsa and crispy fried onions. Add to that the "old yellah" mustard and a squirt more of the "pig sauce" and just try to stop eating the goodness!

PS: have yerself a shot of bouron!

I have raved about Pig before, but only ever having had the pulled pork, I decided it would be good to branch out and try the chicken. Wow, am I glad I did.

My friend got the pulled pork sandwich and the deep friend mac and cheese and I got the deep friend chicken with slaw and corn bread.

The chicken was perfect.  It was a heavenly blend of crispy on the out side and rich, flavourful meat. Not too greasy (although, greasy, I will admit), juicy and filling.  The meat pretty much leaped off the bones into my mouth.

I believe the mac and cheese was described to me as "the best mac and cheese he'd ever eaten" so I'd say that's a go. It looked a little intense to me, it comes as a brick of mac and cheese that has just been dropped into the deep fryer. But after knocking back three pieces of chicken I can't really say I don't do fried.

I highly recommend the chicken, and I really suggest sharing it with someone.  It runs at $12 for the meal, which would be great to share for lunch or even dinner with maybe another side.

I'd been wanting to go to Pig for quite some time but never got around to it until they opened up their new Johnson street location. The first time I dined there, I had the pulled pork which was delicious. It was tender, juicy and very filling for the price. However, my second visit was not so spectacular. I chose the bbq chicken sandwich and within the first few bites was already unimpressed. There were numerous crunchy bits (Im not too familiar with chicken anatomy) but I'm assuming they were chicken joints that I had to pull out of my meal which was slightly distressing as there were at least 4 I had to remove. In addition I felt the flavor lacking and walked away unhappy.

All in all I had a great first experience and walked back in with the same expectations, but was sadly disappointed. I might go back in again for the pulled pork, but am slightly turned off by my eating experience.

For this review i'm going to review this in point form.

    Correct entrance is on Blanchard
    Can be windy by door
Sweet beans nice mild heat at end
    Meat temp warm not hot
    Cornbread was good
Oldyella sauce mustard seed based slightly sweet
    Ordered 1/2 lb pulled pork
    $10bucks on board tax include
    Seats McDonald type very hard

Sounds like I don't like it but I do! I need to research BBQ cooking to actually have a opinion that I would feel comfortable sharing with you. I do know that BBQ cooking can be a personal preference so one person might love the way the meat was prepared and another would hate it.
The kitchen is a great size and you can tell that the owner is the chef.

Overall try this and tell us what you think.

I'm really not an expert at BBQ at all. I can only tell you how I feel about this restaurant based on my limited experience, which is that it is really freaking delicious. Thinking about a giant pile of pulled pork is making my mouth water. I've also had their fried chicken, which is the best I have ever had, and the pulled pork poutine, which is awesome.

I will never not visit this place when I visit Victoria.

I feel like the last person in Victoria who hasn't tried Pig.
I've heard a number of people rave about their BBQ dishes and that reputation is well deserved.  They were packed on a Sunday afternoon, and that's quite a feat.  They seem to be used to high demand though; nobody had to wait long.
I tried the pulled pork poutine and it was hearty and flavorful. I've never tried anything like it.
The menu is concise and totally focused on meat.  I'm eager to try the sandwiches next.

    Pig does a few things.

    They do them well.

Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket or smoked chicken sandwiches served with beans or cornbread.  Drinks include imported US cane sodas and iced teas.  Everything made with real genuine passion and it tastes that way.  Cheap eats made well.  New Colwood location has a more extensive menu including ribs, fried chicken and exquisite Pulled Pork  Poutine - but same friendly service and obvious enjoyment of what they do.

You can't go wrong at Pig. This little hole in the wall with limited seating has a small menu that is BBQ PERFECTION. The pulled pork  is to die for.

Low carbing it? Ask for the generous pulled pork sandwich without the bun, extra pickles and a side of coleslaw. Put it all together and top it with some of the yellow sauce. I call it "Pig salad". YUM

btw I've heard they're moving to a new location just up the street with a patio. I'm looking forward to that. Then Pig will be perfect!

I'm not a fan of pork in general, but had to try this place out since it was new and I heard some decent reviews of it.   Their menu is TINY, because it's specialized.

I was going to go for the pulled chicken sandwich, but the guy at the counter said that if it was my first time, I should definitely go with the pulled pork sandwich so I caved.  Anyway, good rec!! I finished off the whole thing and I was completely stuffed. The pulled pork is stewed in sauce and the sandwich is messy to eat because of all that sauce, but it's yummy.  Very decent lunch for five bucks.

They'll be moving to the new Atrium building by the end of the year so good luck to them there!

Three Words:  Pulled Pork Poutine  Uhhh...do I have to write anything more?  Really good!  We shared the above and I also ordered a pound of beef brisket.  Everything was surprisingly good!  I mean, we are in Victoria Canada, not Kansas City!  They have all the traditional sides, and the BBQ sauce is actually pretty decent.  I was also impressed with their beer selection that included a seasonal tap.  They have a large variety of southern style sodas as well.  Oh, if you like Bourbon, you can get a glass of Bourbon here as well!

Pigs new location in the Atrium is great, spacious (relative to their old location at least), huge ceilings, bright and modern. Their food quality, speed of order delivery and service is great as always. We were out the door with enough delicious pulled pork, ribs and sides to stuff 4 people and have plenty of leftovers for less than $15 each and in under 15 minutes. Happy to give a big thumbs up to Pig again, this time in their new location.

For my money, this is the best cheap and quick restaurant in Victoria. The pulled pork sandwich is just as good as many I have had in the American South. The pork is tender and the BBQ sauce flavourful. Often they will have daily specials which are great. The last two specials I have had have been the "bacon explosion" (bacon interwoven between sausage and more bacon), and a smoked pork belly with a fried egg and Tabasco mayo sandwich. Not exactly health food, but one wouldn't expect that from a restaurant called Pig. The atmosphere is good there too. The guys like to have a good time with their customers and there is always some old blues, rock or country music playing.
