We received a gift certificate and rave recommendation for this restaurant, and so this was an easy choice for a celebratory meal. Everything was wonderful: service, wine, ambience, food, presentation. My husband loved his elk dish, and I have rarely had anything as tasty as the duck. Be sure to save room for dessert, as both the crème brûlée and chocolate tart were sinfully good. This is a very small establishment, so I recommend a reservation. This wonderful experience put Pied-à-Terre on the short list for future special occasions.

What a great place to go. This was the last dinner I had while on my trip to Vancouver, and I must say I was pleasantly impressed...having lived in Europe for the past 7 years I wasn't too sure about French food...but I will admit, my friend made a very sound decision in coming here...
The food was amazing and very well put together...I would definitely recommend coming here...not only was the food really good, but the portions were quite large as well...
As it's quite a small restaurant/bistro, the server was very attentive and quite helpful and made some good recommendations.
Will definitely try to find the chance to come here again sometime.
Compliments to the chef =) -

Pied-a-Terre is a third date restaurant; it's the one you try when you expect to get laid. It's intimate, the food's fantastic and you want to show off with a big bill. I, however, went with my wife...
It's one of those small spaces that Vancouver is great for (about 50 seats) in a great area. For such a small space it was surprisingly not that loud and perfect for a date.
My food was great. I had a tomato tarte for an appie, lamb filet in olive jus for the main and a apple tarte tartin for dessert. All were fantastic. Wife had the beet salad, duck confit, lemon torte. All were good (especially the salad) but the rest we've had better elsewhere.
We didn't like our wine, but I think that's our unrefined palate. We're used to new world wines and they don't offer it. We had the pinot (usually a safe bet) and it wasn't.
The vibe was nice, but not a really "fun" place. The service was good, but slow (it was very busy) and the bill was steeeeeeep.
We definitely liked the place, the food was really, really nice, but we likely won't go back. The food is a solid 4, the space is a solid 4, the vibe is likely a 3, as is the bill. I'll be generous and give it a 4 for a one-time try. But for the money there is better french in Vancouver and I don't need to show off to get lucky anymore... -

Based on previous reviews we made a reservation for our Thursday night dinner and I'm happy we did as the place was full, and even had a line up when we were leaving. It has a small cozy dining room seating around 34 guests at a time.
My only complaint on the night was the wait time on the duck but the manager did warn us it could take up to 25 minutes.
The food was delicious and they provided great wine pairings. This is not my usual type of restaurant I frequent but I was more than happy that we did decide on this quaint French Bistro. -

I'm a big fan if this restaurant. I've been several times and it's always been extremely good. Yup, here it is --
BUT...
Saturday night was the first time I'd had been given anything to complain about. I ordered the steak frites, and I chose the AAA NY striploin done rare+ with the roquefort & mustard. Frustratingly, there were threads of fat running through the cut that were so hard to get through that it ruined the entree. Bummer.
All else was to the usual high standard. I had a seared fois gras that was unbelievable, an armangac creme brûlée covered in crushed pecans that was one of the best deserts I may have ever had, but the steak -- quelle horreur.
The service was bang on, as usual.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Fabulous food. Squash soup creamy and flavorful, scallops delicious, short ribs is a huge plate, and crispy chicken is wonderful. Highly recommended. Only issue was the noise. Hard to carry on a conversation. You will not regret eating there.

Just went here for the for the first time a few weeks ago and it was yummy!

Review from B N.
What a wonderful small establishment. It was hands down our favorite bistro in Vancouver and ranks right up there as one of the finest French eateries we have been to.
My wife started with the foie gras mousse and I had the seared foie gras washed down with sautern.
For the entree my wife had the osso buco and I had filet of milk fed veal loin, veal cheek . What a delightful meal.
Be sure to make reservations (even during the middle of the week) as this is a very small place and the food is so good that it has it's own loyal local following. -

TL;DR = THE Best Casual French Restaurant in Vancouver without exception or argument.
Exterior -
easy to miss in the middle of Cambie Village. elegant and simple use of black. characterful mural of a flying cochon only visible heading north on Cambie St.
Interior -
small and intimate, simple and restrained. i would not recommend a group larger than 4, maybe 6. as a pair, ask for a table in one of the corners by the front window.
Food -
foie gras app was rich and perfect. lamb 3-ways main was simply one of the best lamb dishes i have enjoyed in Vancouver - the cheek was amazing.
Service -
well-trained and of fine-dining calibre wait staff. host was gracious and considerate of seating arrangements. unintrusive quality checks during the meal.
Value -
3-course meals with wine included are a great deal. wine list has reasonable choices under $40.
Better than: Bistrot Bistro, Les Faux Bourgeois, Jules Bistro -

Oct 14, 2011. Very nice bistro style restaurant for a dinner for two or a small group. We had the chef's 3 course menu. The brioche mushroom appy was a bit salty but still very good. The chorizo mussels appy was AMAZING!!! Arctic char main was very well prepared as was the venison, which was not gamey all. BTW, excellent fries with the venison. The black forest cake dessert was closer to fudge cake than a traditional "cake". The apple tart was excellent. I would return.

We went there coz most of the reviews of this restaurant are high rating.
The waitress was very attentive and friendly. The seating quite cozy and decoration very simple and nice.
When we read the menu, we found the selection quite limited but reasonable price.
However, the foods were quite disappointed -
Seared scallops were small and a bit fishy.
Rack of lamp - 2 pcs were ok with so much potatoes and veggie.
Beef tenderloin - I ordered medium rare and it severed perfectly. However, the red wine sauce with onion was awful.
We didn't bother to try the dessert.
When we got the bill, we found the hot water charged for $1.95. -

A cute romantic little bistro in the heart of the Cambie Corridor. The decor is simple yet very cozy. I had a nice memorable yummy meal here with my date. The servers were nice and efficient. The portions were reasonable.
I think they did a really good job with the pan seared foie gras because it wasn't overcooked and had a nice fruity sauce to accompany it. A glass of Sauterne really complimented the intensity of this dish and the acidity took out the richness of it.
I also liked their Lac Brome duck breast with the confit. I asked for it to be medium rare and that happened. I was really full by the time I finished every yummy thing on the plate. Thank goodness the dish wasn't too salty ( I had that problem at other restaurants).
A good place for a nice romantic meal without breaking the bank. -

But most impressive; the service well exceeded most experiences in Vancouver!

Classic French done to perfection. The food and value deserve 5* but the overly snug seating arrangements take away from the overall rating.
When I end up bumping elbows at a nice restaurant with my banquette neighbor, it's usually in a private booth with a friend, not a stranger at the next table! Although, the close quarters makes for easy ogling of other lovely looking entrees....
Nice and simple wine list, with some interesting picks by the glass.
*great* steak frites - I would ask for the sauce on the side, though.
perfectly done chicken, with heavenly mashed potatoes. simple but amazing flavors that sing with every bite!
Unless you're very hungry, i'd skip the appetizer to save space for dessert. We had the daily special, a caramelized brown sugar cake - high five!
Delightful - can't wait to go back and try the fish, duck, and steak frites (again!) -

Fantastic imtimate french style bistro. The 4 of us had 4 different starters, mains and desserts, they were all excellent and very reasonable. Wine list was French, uncomplicated, but with a nice range of styles and pricepoints. Chef Durbach of former L'Altro Buca (now sold) also has Cafeteria on Main and La Buca on Macdonald that we want to try next.
But definitely will be returning here. -

The steak tartar! Oh my god, the steak tartar!! My quest for the perfect steak tartar is now complete. I vow to look no further than Pied-a-Terre.
My man and I came to celebrate our anniversary and here is what we had:
Me:
Salad du jour - poached prawns, citrus, greens
Fish special - Ling cod fillet, lentils, kale, fresh herb sauce
Him:
Steak tartar
Crisp roast chicken, sweet garlic purée, lemon & rosemary jus, green peppercorns
Shared:
Lemon tart
Yes, if you've been following my story so far, you will notice that I didn't actually order the steak tartar. He shouldn't have offered. It is now all I can think about. It's served with fresh potato crisps, which I didn't even bother with. The Man and I both agreed that it's the best we've ever had. I jokingly said (okay, not so jokingly) that I can eat a bowl of it. The server overheard me and giggled.
My salad was fresh and dressed nicely. The fish special was very, very tasty. Ling cod is one of my favourites, and it had a superb crispy crust on the outside, moist on the inside. The kale and lentils matched the flavours of the fish perfectly, as did the sauce.
The Man really, really enjoyed his meal. I was too busy with mine to really pay attention to his plate, but it was presented nicely and from the morsel of chicken I had, it was very good as well.
I'm friends with the Head Chef, and before our courses arrived, he sent us little pichets of the soup du jour - potato and parsley, served with a little dollop of creme fraiche on top. Very thoughtful of him. It was actually the perfect amount for us, and it definitely set the bar high for the rest of the evening. Between the first and second courses, he sent another little treat. This time, it was something he made out of his shear genius: a brioche covered with a medley of mushrooms in a delectable sauce. It was heavenly. Even though I have a gnarly wheat intolerance, I still ate it, it was that good. Sure, it's going to suck later, but it's a small price to pay compared to this amazing meal.
The lemon tart was the best lemon tart I've had in an extremely long time. I have a hardcore sweet tooth, and although in almost any other circumstance we would have gone for the dark chocolate tart, we thought it would put us to a nice warm, comfortable sleep by the last bite so we opted for the lemon tart instead. What's the best part about creme brulee? The sugary, crispy, crunchy, crackly topping. Pied-a-Terre's lemon tart has that. I had to stop myself from gasping when I saw it. Served with a dollop of creme fraiche and raspberry sauce, it was perfect.
This was by far the most memorable meal I have had in so, so, very long. The service is prompt and attentive, professional and friendly. The setting is romantic, intimate, and very classy. From now on, anyone who asks me for a place to have a truly enjoyable meal, my answer is Pied-a-Terre. And for the love of god, get the steak tartar. -

Classy French food owned by Frenchies!
This place is exceptional for food and the location meets the needs of residents living in the area who are looking for different types of food, other than the 10 Hong-Kong style eateries in one block.
I have been here several times and entree was exceptional and portion was reasonable. I had the steak tar-tar. Presentation was very classy and appetizing.
The only thing missing to give it a true French experience is a patio. Space is very small, therefore spontaneity is not welcome, but requires planning & reservations ahead.
Overall, great food, ambience & service for reasonable price! -

Fantastic. An adorable little restaurant with attentive but laid-back service, and amazing food and wine.
I had the dry aged steak, which was delicious, and the creamed spinach that came with was just about the best creamed spinach I've ever had (not that that bar is so high!). My husband had cassoulet, which was amazing. Boar sausage and duck confit were so tasty!
The waiter suggested wines to pair, and they were spot on.
A very yummy and interesting lemon tart brulee for dessert.
Best restaurant I've been to in Vancouver to date! -

Superb food and service without burning a hole in your wallet.
After hearing so many good reviews about Pied-a-Terre, I finally got to go last night. It was a Friday night, and my friend and I managed to get a table for 2 at 7PM by calling at 6:10. It seems all the tables are filled (I've my back to the room so I can't really tell) but it's just to show it's not crazy busy. There's another couple waiting for our table at 9PM so it also seems late dinner is ok at Pied-a-Terre.
I got the impression from the menu that it is not traditional French food only because it offers West Coast ingredients. For example, my appetizer is a pair of very nicely deep-fried oysters with chili mayo. Please correct me if I'm wrong...
I pick from the menu the 3-course option for $45, which covers appetizer, main, dessert and a glass of red, white or rose. My friend just orders from the menu, and the bill works out to be about the same. So with the $45 special you get the wine for "free".
I'm given the option to pick from the regular menu or the daily specials. So I had the fried oysters, the daily special veal cheeks and the pear tart for dessert. The glass of red was shared with my friend since I don't really drink.
The food does not disappoint! The oysters are fresh, nicely breaded and fried, not greasy at all. The veal cheeks is so tender, it can be eaten with just a folk. Oh but the climax of my meal is the pear tart. I LOVE pear. The tart is actually a slice of a bigger tart. It is tender and fluffy on the top. Big chunks of pear at the bottom and a crunchy base. The tart is nicely paired with light cream, raspberry sauce, and a few pieces of perfectly pouched pear. Ummm umm good!
In spite of the full house, I didn't feel like I need to yell to carry a conversation across the table. The ambiance is clean and romantic.
Definitely will go back again when my budget allows. -

A great addition to the French restaurants in Vancouver. A slightly awkward entrance but I actually found the cozyness of the room quite enjoyable.

This is my favorite restaurant in the city, hands down. It has a charming intimate feel, delicious cooking and all for a price that's much more affordable than what I'd expect for such expert French cuisine. It's definitely THE perfect place to take a date you're looking to impress.
When I originally went I was worried about the design inside. It's a beautiful space and in Vancouver that tends to mean crap food or at least poorly conceived food. 'Funky fusion' or overly thought-out flash tends to populate places that look as good as pied-a-terre. Luckily though, what the nouveau design hides is a menu of all classical french dishes...even down to the frogs legs.
My favorite I've had here was the pork belly. Not something easy to make without falling too rich or too dry but they executed it to perfection. My friends have all adored the steak meal as well. This is truly the base instincts of cooking back to many of the culinary roots of modern cuisine but they present it so well it makes you wonder why people even bother to build on these blocks.
A meal for one with wine will set you around $30 but it's well worth it. This is definitely about a $50 meal and they offer many deals and combos that will take your palate places you'd never expect for those low prices.
If you like your food rich and European or are just feeling a little adventurous, I'd definitely suggest heading south on Cambie to this succulent little spot. -

Cute little neighborhood French restaurant in Vancouver away just far enough from the Olympic madness where the wait isn't ridiculous and reservations can be made the same day.
We ordered the garlic prawns, beef tartar and veal with some Pinot Noir. The prawns were tasty with a garlic pesto like sauce with enough sauce left over to dip with the bread. The tartar came with homemade potato chips and greens. The veal came with a sympany of mushrooms and potatoes in a yummy sauce. Unfortunately it was slightly overcooked but yet it was tender enough that we didn't feel the need to send it back.
Overall we were pleased with our dinner. It was very reasonably priced with our bill coming at about $65 with gratuity. -

This place is my favourite restaurant in the entire city. I've been there a number of times and the food is always delicious and presented well, the service is fantastic, and the room is intimate and perfect for a date. It's a nice place to go for a nice date. People have also been talking about Les Faux Bourgeois and saying that it's better and cheaper. I think that yes, it's cheaper (but only by like $10 for 2 people), but it shows. The people at Pied-a-Terre pay more attention to the details and what you end up with is beautiful, simple food. Delicious!

Celebrated Tuesday here this week. We orderd the onion pie to share (this is delicious and highly recommended) and then I orderd the rabbit and he ordered the duck breast. Food was great. The servers were attentive and made sure we were happy as well as asking if we needed bread replenishments. I asked to taste the wine feature before ordering it (it was $13.75/glass) and they gladly obliged with a healthy test of it--it was very good especially paired with the rabbit, so of course i ordered it. The restaurant is very tiny and intimate--reservations are recommended. Ordered the creme caramel for dessert. That was tasty as well. Our food bill with three drinks came to $100. Only disappointment was they did not have onion soup on the dinner menu (only lunch).

It's simply C'est Magnifique... not that I actually know any French... but it was one of the best meals that I've ever had .... my fish was perfectly cooked and so was my dinner companion's beef dish... the layers of taste was amazing ...and most mentioning.. the most delicious mashed potatoes ... our desserts of creme caramel and chocolate souffle were also heavenly ... the only complaint is our duck appetizer was too salty for our taste .. otherwise intimate setting with memorable dishes

This is a French bistro that transports you back to the streets of Paris. The same idea and same owners as La Buca (Italian) and Parkside, this has romance written all over it. I like to visit when it's cold and rainy outside, because some of the dishes are so hearty and warm. Think of a beef shortrib bourguignon and steaks frites. The onion soup is gooey and perfectly browned, while the Table D'Hote offers a selection of the days favourites for a set price. Don't forget to leave room for dessert. The creme caramel or the Napoleon is too good to miss.

Very basic dishes done amazingly well. Everything was perfect. Even the vegetables tasted amazing. The only gripe I had was with that the beef bourguignon was not as tender as I would have liked. I usually stay away from chicken dishes because they don't impress but the crispy chicken was the best chicken dishes I've had.

For anyone out there planning a romantic rendezvous, book a cozy corner table at the Pied-à-Terre restaurant on Cambie Street (yes, there's life after RAV-line construction). You'll feel like you've been teleported to the heart of Paris, the city of love. The eatery's open for lunch and dinner, and is as close to a vraiment French bistro as I've seen a while. Look skywards for the sexy crystal chandeliers paired with a low-key decor and a charming, comfort-infused menu (coq au vin, steaks frites, tarte tatin)... best shared with just one set of cutlery!

Nice little French bistro in a nice neighborhood. Price is not bad for this side of town. Make sure you have a reservation. They offer a set menu with soup of the day, steak frites and dessert for around $30. Small wine list. Try their roast chicken, it's on par in taste to West.

A very cozy restaurant although difficult to get a reservation for dinner on a friday night. I had the 3 course meal for $45 with the wine pairings (extra $20) and it was an amazing meal. The duck confit was fantastic and the chocolate mousse with sour cherries is amazing.
