I love this place. They have excellent pho. The sugar cane shrimp is among the best I have ever had, and the spring rolls are crazy good, too. The only drawback is that when you order pho, the spicy peppers do not automatically come on the plate with the sprouts, lime, and basil. You have to request them, but when you do, a little goes a long way! They'll bring you a plate of the bird's eye chilis (use sparingly!). Great friendly service as well.

Pho Soup is bland, pretty much tasteless. Beef is too chewy. Ordered the spring roll which is so-so definitely not coming back given that there are tons of better pho places.

Update! Went and tried their Viet subs!

I ordered the Banh Mi Thit Nuong (#8 grilled pork baguette, $3.50) by phone and it was ready in 10 minutes.  The baguette skin is crunchy, yet the insides were soft and fluffy.  I loved the bread! I wonder where I can buy this bread in stores.  You can't compare this to the Tim Horton's bread (they're like bricks, compared to this).  The Vietnamese sub is actually....

I've been waiting for a pho place to pop up in North Burnaby for many years now and my dreams have finally come true. No more making up excuses to go "shopping" in East Van just so I can grab a bowl of pho.

Pho 101 is not your regular hole-in-the-wall. Schemed in a dramatic black and red, the small restaurant definitely makes a bold statement, which is reflected in their pricing (it's about 15% higher).

The pho broth was similar to what I've had at Le Do (one of my favourite Vietnamese places): it was clear, fresh and low on MSG, which I appreciate. It was packed for lunch but the service was impeccable and the wait staff, extremely friendly. If this modern little place added a couple vegetarian options, perhaps I would consider a perfect rating. For some reason, pho at a hole-in-the-wall place just tastes better. Maybe it's psychological but it just adds that extra umph that Pho 101 doesn't have.

Visit this place if you're in town. Nice modern look. Good customer service.

Funny story: it's a small place so conversations are easily heard by everyone. Not a good idea to have loud and immature toilet talk with guy friends when others in the restaurant are trying to slurp up their rice noodles from their hot and steamy brown broth. haha.
