Usually I am a woman of many words but today this is all that is necessary-
"ICED MINT MOJITO".
You're welcome.
Also: bagels and take credit cards! -

I got a call from Paris. From une femme. An old flame of mine. She was an aspiring fashion design student when I had a brief fling with her in Paris. It appeared that she finally made it because that call was an invitation to attend a fashion show in Paris that she was participating as one of the designers. I immediately grabbed my coffee and stormed outta there.
Oh, btw, the coffee was excellent... -

They've added another iced drink to their menu: ginger snap.
pretty delicious but I still prefer the mint mojito.
Philz now has a bagel station. They moved all the tables and chairs over to onto the left hand side of this building and call it the "Philz Lounge" -

Do not come here for an espresso drink. Change your yelp category to not include something you don't cater to.

Consistency is key for coffee shop chains. When I go to Starbucks and I order a coffee, it should taste like the same coffee I ordered 5 months ago at a Starbucks 3,000 miles away. So tell me why I ordered mint mojito iced coffees from this same location in the same week (made by 2 different baristas) and they tasted so different?
The guy barista makes it exactly how I like it. Strong coffee flavor, sweet and he crushes the mint so that the whole drink has the minty flavor incorporated into every sip. Now they have this chick back there, who made it and it tasted like watery garbage. Not sweet at all, minty to the point of herbal medicine, and watery to boot. I asked her to remake my drink since it didn't taste right and although she was sweet about it, the second time was just as bad! I wanted to say, "Excuse me, can you get your other coworker to make it? Because whenever you make it, it tastes like I paid $5 for a cup of brown herbal water."
Worst part was that I was bragging about how good their mint mojito iced coffees were and my two friends with me were definitely not impressed. Retrain your female barista. In fact, get the tall Caucasian urban dressed guy barista to retrain her before you lose customers. I wish I had bigger cojones and refused to accept the 3 drinks she made.1 Previous Review:

They have a separate lounge with ample seating across the way which is super convenient. We didn't actually go in there, as we chose to have our drinks outside. Downside though, there's no outdoor seating here.
Another downside, this place is pricey! $3.00 for a Small Chai Tea? That's pretty ridiculous!
What's even more ridiculous?
The chai tea had so much grainy bits in the bottom of the cup that left a horrible taste in my mouth. Ok, a little but would be fine, but this was about 10 - 15% of the cup! I had to take a swig of my boyfriend's coffee to rinse the grit out of my mouth. Not cool!
When I ordered, the barista was super nice though (scruffy guy with a beanie who looked a lot like one of the guys from Bear in Heaven). I kept the disappointing chai to myself though as I was in a meeting, so I'm not sure if they could have or would have done something to correct it. -

OH, this is going to be really akwardddd...
I really wanted to like this place and have been dying to try it for weeks but it just didn't work out that way. I walked up to the bariesta and said, "I'd like something like a latte (if you guys have it)" and he made me something that is pretty much just coffee and foam on top. It was really bitter and had to add crazy scoops of sugar. After awhile, it started tasting like chinese medicine and I actually had to add more milk and sugar to get it tasting the way I like it. And you know, I get it. It's a coffee place and it's not starbucks or whatever but damn, I don't know how to drink this! I'm a latte kind of gal. I also ordered a bacon and egg burrito and it was ok, not amazing or great or anything, just OK.
I wouldn't come back here for my morning coffee/latte but don't get me wrong you guys, service was A++. -

This place was recommended to me because I was volunteering at the Free Farm around the corner. I wanted a hot coffee, but I went with the iced coffee because it was an unusually hot day in the city and I was pleasantly surprised!
So good! Paired my small iced coffee with some vanilla soy milk and one sugar and I was good to go.
Highly recommended. Even though it was busy the staff were quick, friendly, and very helpful!Listed in: San Francisco Bay Area

Philz is the best.
I work two blocks away from this location and it's safe to say my coworkers and I are obsessed wit this delicious Coffee. This rich, smooth, flavorful coffee.
New Manhattan and Mint Mojito are my all time favorites. They have good food too if you want a quick bite in the morning. The pumpkin cookies are awesome and they have great breakfast burritos.
And of course the owners and employees are great. Seems like a fun place to work.
Enjoy. -

I've only purchased their beverages, twice. And had plenty of it at a certain business cafeteria. ;)
Always delicious. I love their Tesora. And somehow, I am thinking of the Italian word for treasure, tesoro now. Sigh.
Always friendly service. -

I will keep it short and sweet with a friendly warning: do not come here unless you are prepared to be hooked on Philtered coffee - really.
POISON/PROBLEM/WHAT THEY DO:
(1) carry (almost) all of my favorite beans including: Sumatra, Ethiopian, Brazilian Dark and that liquid gold: Jamaican Blue Mountain. This means that they probably have your favorites too.
(2) let you watch your cup slow drip - it's really not that slow though. Ok, there is only one table and two chairs in there - so you actually have to stand and watch, or move to the lounge.
(3) put cream in it - real cream and ask you if you like it slightly, medium or real sweet. it's sweet enough with a drop of cream. Cream + coffee...
(4) ice anything you want even though not everything should be iced ie Turkish [just get the Ecstatic]
(5) Ecstatic iced coffee - I could drink this all day. It's a blend of like gazillion coffees - seriously the most complex cup to cross my palate - it was like revisiting every country I've ever traveled to and drinking my favorite beans all over again. Apparently, it will never taste the same on a different day, because they blend it differently - daily. When I finished, I just wanted more - super glad this place is pretty far from me.
(6) Separate Study Lounge from the coffee bar - so you don't obsess over the constant dripping. It's like they know a few doors between you and the bar won't stop you from drinking as much caffeine as your body will tolerate.
TIP: if you like bold flavors that leave your mouth feeling like smooth chocolate - get Jacob's Wonderbar! Or, the Mocha Tesor.
Sorry not so short after-all - maybe it's the caffeine?Listed in: 2012: 100 review challenge

Why 4 stars? Because of the variety and friendliness.
--- --- ---
My coffee itself seemed about average, but what I enjoyed was the friendliness and selection at Philz. I walked in to see a glorious variety of coffees, but I knew nothing about any of them as an out of towner who had never been to a Philz before. The guys behind the counter walked me through my decision, giving me precise details about each blend. I ended up with the Ambrosia Coffee of God due to the recommendation of an employee and the customer behind me.
I will definitely visit Philz again in the future and can't wait to try more types. I'm kicking myself for not taking home a bag. -

I prefer my coffee black since I dislike the sweetness (and extra calories) of mixed bevs. One sunny afternoon I decided to splash out, swayed by the buzz surrounding the Mint Mojito Iced Coffee.
Thumbs up! It was light, refreshing, not too sweet and made with fresh mint. Kudos Philz for a blend well done!
PS: This location has two wings. One for ordering and the other for plugging in ~ with many hushed bodies honed into their screens during my visit. -
Review from Janice W.
I REALLY wanted to like this place. After seeing multiple photos of their mint mojito iced coffee all over my Facebook newsfeed, I decided to try it for myself.
After finishing a meal at Turtle Tower, we had about 24 minutes left on the meter, so we decided to walk around the corner for some coffee and be back at our car with time to spare. Once I walked into Philz, it was pretty empty, and I was excited to get to try my first mint mojito iced coffee. I placed my order promptly with a woman near the espresso machine, and was told that I would pay after getting my drink. Fair enough, I thought. About a minute later, 3 people walked in. Then 2 more. All of them ordered some kind of hot drink, and 10 minutes later, I was curious as to where my drink was. 3 of the people that came in after me already got their drinks - and I thought OKAY, maybe this iced coffee concoction takes some sort of special prep... I've worked at a coffee shop before, and I KNOW that hot drinks take longer to make than iced drinks just because of the extra step of having to steam the milk. It still seemed a little ridiculous of a wait to me, considering that I was there before any of the other patrons, and the fact that I ordered a cold drink. Five more minutes pass by, and at this point, I am STARING DOWN THE BARISTA because this was such a ridiculous wait for coffee! If I knew it would take so long, I wouldn't have come. FINALLY, she calls out "MINT MOJITO ICED COFFEE" and puts two on the counter. One was mine, and the other belonged to a customer that was there for probably about 2 minutes. WHAT THE HELL. I angrily paid at the register and rushed back to the car, hoping that the meter didn't expire.
Firstly, my coffee was not presented in the way that all the pictures of the mint mojitos were depicted. Mine just looked like regular coffee.
Secondly, the drink was INCREDIBLY watered down. I've had my fair share of different coffees, but this drink was similar to a McDonald's iced coffee (think a crap ton of milk and little to no espresso). While I enjoyed the minty cool flavor of the drink, this was in no way worth the wait or the ~$4.
I am hoping that the Berkeley location of Philz won't disappoint, but the kind of customer service and lack of quality control here was unacceptable. -
Review from Melanie A.
San Francisco, CA
Rude customer service. I've gone to Philz often and am a pretty patient person overall but today was the last straw. I've had multiple instances where the baristas are just rude.
*I ask for a mojito and I get glared at by the barista. She's looking at me while making the drink and just giving me dirty looks. I don't know why "can I get a mint mojito please" pisses her off but I head over to the purchase line to finish the transaction. I write it off to her having a bad day.
*I come back a different time and I get the same barista (bad news!). I think fine, no problem. I ask for an iced coffee and when I pick it up, the taste is off. I ask for it to be sweetened more and again, I get the glare again while she adds the sweetener. How dare I feel that the drink isn't perfect.
*I order a coffee and ask for a cup of water. I'm told, "yeah it's over there." The cashier person looks at the sink across the room and then then moves to the next person in line. I don't receive the water and am just stunned. If I could get it myself I would, but it's behind the counter and I don't have access to it.
*I walk in and I hear someone say "can I help you?" I look around and no one is looking at me but the barista looks like she's looking down and making drinks and a worker heads over to the bagel stand. I don't know who spoke to me. The barista is making drinks so I look at the menu for the non-coffee options. I'm just looking and decide on a tea. A dude pops up behind the counter, we share eye contact, so I think it's okay to order my tea. After I order, he then tells me to order through the barista because it can get busy during peak hours and to essentially follow the system. Notice, I'm the only one in line because it's NOT BUSY AT ALL. I get it, follow the system. I wouldn't mind that and I usually do order through the barista first but there's no reason to look like you bit into a lemon with a sour look on your face when I try to explain my mistake. WHen the barista calls my order, she's looking at the customers ahead of her and not at the counter when setting the tea down. The cup spills over some tea. Thank you for making me feel special.
I'm not making a blanket statement that all the baristas are rude. After all, they are actually very pleasant generally and make good suggestions for drinks. However, when spending $3 per cup for coffee/tea, I have higher standards for customer service. It's okay to have bad days but please don't take it out on me. -
Review from Kevin J.
I'm pretty impressed with this location. I think Philz made a good choice when opening up this little spot. Although not the easiest of accessibility located on one of the busiest streets in the city, this is surely a coffee hot-spot.
The store was clean and welcoming with a chalkboard sign posted out front inviting guests and patron's alike to come in and check out a new fresh approach. Philz is not for the plain-Jane's of coffee drinkers so have an open mind and be prepared to be amazed. The Ambrosia Coffee of God was my drink today and let me tell you - this light/medium cup was just the drink I needed to kick off my morning.
This location even includes a bagel-bar where all of your doughy needs can be met. If you have a little time, step on over to the other side (literally) and take a load off while sitting in a room with like-minded folk just enjoying their morning wake-up call.
Check out Philz and you wont regret it. -

When we moved to San Francisco I decided to stop wearing a watch. I had worn a watch for 40 years but why did I need a watch? People in San Francisco don't wear watches. I carried an iPhone wherever I went. I didn't need a watch to tell the time. I would just look at my iPhone.
Yesterday Anna wanted to get up at 6:30 so she had time for a shower before school. I usually set the alarm in my iPhone. But my power was low and I had to charge the iPhone. Fortunately I had downloaded an alarm app on my iPad that could do the same thing. I was so iConnected. I set the alarm in my iPad and put it next to my iBed. iSlept.
I awoke with the clock flashing 6:00 AM. It was dark outside and the deep rumble of the foghorn made my bones vibrate. I went to the kitchen. I made a pot of strong coffee - I was drinking something menacingly deep from Philz's called "Ether" - and drank a cup. I read the morning news on my iPad.
At 6:30 I went up and tried to wake Anna but she begged for another 15 minutes. I went back to the kitchen. I had another cup of Ether. At 6:45 I started back upstairs. Odd that it was so dark. The foghorn was still moaning so we must be really socked in today. I got to Anna's room and sat on the edge of her bed. She hadn't moved - Wow, she was really sleeping hard. I hated to wake her. I put my hand on her shoulder and gave her a shake. But then I noticed her clock - it said 3:45.
I went back to the other room and grabbed my iPad. It said 6:45. I went upstairs and found my iPhone, now fully charged. It agreed with Anna's clock. I realized what had happened. I hadn't moved the time forward on the iPad; it was still East Coast time. Here it was 3:45 in the morning and now I had drunk 2 cups of Ether.
Sure got a jump on the day. -

People, do not blame Phil for your bad choices!
This place is awesome. I really enjoy the Philtered Soul and Mocha Tesora but seeing as how you CAN'T GO WRONG with any flavor on the menu I usually just ask the baristas to surprise me. The baristas are also really friendly and helpful, even though their hipster vibes may throw you at first. I'll admit it's a unique payment system at Phil'z. You order first then get in another line to pay, using the honor system.
The other room in the back is also awesome, it really sets the tone for the chill vibe that Phil'z upholds.
Fair warning: Phil'z coffee is STRONG. The first time I went here I downed my coffee in 10 minutes and by the time I got to school my math teacher said I was chattering away and bouncing off the walls like a chipmunk and my heart was racing like the Indy 500.
Final verdict for the awesome delicious, affordable fair trade coffee they serve here? 4 FOR YOU PHIL'Z, you go Phil'z!!!! -

I wish this location Phil Coffee shop was open when I was in college. I will definitely go there for studying. There is a separate room next to where the coffee drinks are made/ordered. It perfect place for people enjoy their coffee with the extra noise.
I love this new location because it's easier to find parking on the weekend compares to in the Mission. The staffs there are really friendly and helpful.
My all time favorite ice mint mojito coffee. However, their medium roast coffee selections coffees are good too -

I am going to present an opposing view. First, I have been grinding beans and making espresso at home for longer than the staff at van ness have been alive. I've grown in appreciation of good coffee from my first experience with Peet's French roast at cedar store when I was in grad school over 30 years ago. And have passed through a few boutique coffees before finding blue bottle and most recently Philz. And Philz "It's the Best" will remain our bean of choice for home espresso.
BUT.... This past Sunday We had stayed in sf for a one night staycation and wanted a morning latte.... Used yelp to find Philz and just assumed they made lattes...seeing espresso on the chalk board. So I ordered one for me and one for my wife. I was excited as I'd never had a latte at philz, just bought beans for home use. I was only half paying attention but I saw the Barista pour brewed coffee through the grounds... Never had seen that... Didn't even occur to me that this was a Philz espresso. So I said I'd never seen that before. When she said 'that's your latte,' I was stunned. When I registered confusion she acted like I was some kind of coffee neanderthal, clueless about the nuances of philzdom... I objected and said that when I ordered a latte she should have said that they dont make lattes or they make 'turkish' lattes....(which is also a misnomer as Turkish coffee is not twice brewed but who is counting...). Bottom line pouring coffee through grounds twice doesn't create espresso, it creates Luke warm coffee. I would have been ok with all of this, but Barista was so unapologetic and rude that I decided to brave the wave of 5's on yelp and offer a countering view.
Having said all this, we will continue to get Philz it's the best beans, cuz they are the best, -
Review from Amelia A.
Good enough. Friendly staff, plenty of places to sit. Coffee was excellent, as always.
The one bummer was that my cousin, who I met here for coffee & catching-up while I visited SF, had his bike stolen from literally right outside the door during the half-hour we were there (yes, it was locked). Eesh. Not their fault, of course, but a good reminder to be super cautious, I guess? -

I love Philz! The first time one I had was their Mocha Tesora. It was richer than other mochas (and stronger because I was tweaking all day!).
Now that I'm used to caffeine, I love going there to get my day started.. and to also get one of their yummy potato sambusas! -

I already love Philz, but had only been going to the Berry St. location because it's closer to where I live. I decided to come to this one to study with my friend after school.
Two things:
1. Bathroom was really clean... this means so much to me!!
2. The place is split up so that ordering / food is in one room, and the tables are in another. I REALLY liked this because it was good for studying! No loud noise of people ordering coffee / food interfering with my studying :) :) -

Wow a San Francisco coffee place that is good AND the baristas are helpful/not arrogant! Amazing!
Today was my first trip to Philz and when the girl said "what can I get you?" I responded with "I am overwhelmed". She laughed and was nice enough to walk me through the ordering process and made some great recommendations! I was so surprised at the professional and helpful customer service that seems be EXTREMELY rare in San Francisco.
I am no expert coffee drinker, obviously, but the small was more than enough for me. I only drank half and felt like I got my full caffeine fix for the day. Thanks for a great experience, Philz! -

How do you do it?
That's what my friends keep asking me..
I go to school full-time, I work full-time, I'm a weekend warrior (literally), find the time to balance a relationship with my girlfriend of 3 years, and furthermore, still make "me" time to hit the gym for at least 2 hours, three to four times a week. And of course, stay Yelpin' (thanks for reminding me, Jen C.)
So, how DO I do it?
Three simple things:
1) Good time management.
2) Self-motivation.
3) A strong cup of Joe.. from Philz.
Sorry Starbucks. It's not you, it's me.. and Philz.. (well, I guess it is you then). -

Yes, I'm a fan!!! Let me breakdown the coffee hierarchy for you:
(From the top to the bottom)
Philz Coffee (especially the Philtered Soul)!!!
Seattle's Best
Blue Bottle
Dunkin Donuts
McDonald's
Coffee Bean
Starbucks
Philz Coffee on Van Ness is hands down the best coffee & best staff!! I want to try all of the flavors on the menu. If they ask whether or not you want cream and sugar - just trust them. Somehow, I don't know how, but somehow they always put exactly the right amount! Philtered Soul nom nom in my tom!
This place is great for studying, unlimited WiFi access and a large room with many tables. Not a great place to eat - they need to expand their menu selection - though i'm sure most people are here just for the coffee.
I love you, Phil! -

Every time I am in SF I come to Philz. I prioritize coming to Philz over anything else, ANYTHING else. There is no coffee place in California or otherwise that is quite as good. That includes Blue Bottle.
I would replace every bodily fluid I have with this coffee if I could. I'd crack open my eyeballs, drain the aqueous and vitreous humors, and pour Tesora in if meant I could see in some cool "coffee vision."
Philz could easily be the douchiest coffee bar on the planet. I was scared that I would be met with a smug hippie attitude when I first came. The worker was wearing a freaking afghan and had facial hair that screamed "bongo lover." Suddenly I felt very metropolitan and out of place. I didn't know how to order their coffee, was I to be mocked? SF can create dens of smuggery at times, and I feared I had entered one.
But everyone here, hippie or otherwise is nice as can be. They don't judge, they know that flavor is subjective and everyone has their preferences. Reading up on the philosophy of the place really shows that they are PROUD of everything they serve, so whatever you order is fine by them.
Do you want lots of cream and lots of sugar? No problem. My lady orders it like that all the time and they've never raised an eyebrow. In fact just about every order is met the same way. "No problem, coming right up." Or maybe, "Right on bro."
Oh right, so the coffee. It's fantastic. Every blend is unique and you should experiment to find your favorite. The flavors in these coffee will show you what coffee is capable of if you were like me and had only frequented a Starbucks prior to this. My favorite is Anesthesia To the Upside. I have NO clue where they get these names from ...
They actually have recently added a bagel bar in the corner and it's REALLY good. I like the Mediterranean bagel the best. It might seem pricey ($4-5 I think) but you actually get a BIG bagel sandwich that's enough for lunch.
Swing by here if you're stopping in SF for any reason and see what they can do. -

I cannot say enough good things about Philz. The one at 24th street has been a favorite for years, and stands out as one of the places in the neighborhood that attracts people from all walks of life. The atmosphere is cozy and unpretentious, the service is great, and it's a wonderful place to have a conversation with a friend or stranger. I don't even drink coffee all that much anymore but make a special trips here for their decaf, and the whole vibe, at least once a week. If they can attract me consistently with decaf, then you know they know what they are doing. I also really enjoy the benches outside for lounging and watching the world. There are increasingly few places in the city where people simply sit and enjoy life and one another.. Philz is a wonderful example of one that is still going strong.

I've had a love affair with Philz ever since I first had a cup at Outside Lands in 2009. I remember watching in amazement, as the Philzistine poured hot water into a a single coffee filter hovering over a cup. I had never seen coffee prepared in such a way. Granted, I wasn't a big coffee drinker at the time, but I couldn't get over how much different the coffee tasted when it was a single brew.
This experience is probably why I don't care so much for Four Barrel or Ritual. I also don't feel like dealing with the snobbery when I shell out for my once a week treat for a $4 cup of coffee. While Philz may not be the cool kid on the coffee block, they serve a great cup of coffee without the fuss. -

iced mint mojito!!!!!! After Philz I've been wanting to add mint into all my drinks! LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
It's nice to have the person who takes your order make it right in front of you and ask how you like it...then asks you to try it so they can redo it if it's not the BEST you've had....so good. -

Today was my third visit to Philz coffee on VanNess between Eddy and Turk. I decided to wait until I found something to write about because I felt my first two visits left something to be desired. I talked to my good friend Mark about Philz, Mark is a fan, he said if I wasn't happy with my coffee perhaps I hadn't found the right coffee. I usually order a double espresso but Philz makes drip coffee only. I found the coffee at Philz to taste almost like hot water, didn't have any body or flavor to it at all. Mark suggested I try their Turkish coffee, wow, what a difference that made, nice a strong, felt like I was drinking something other than hot water and there's a spice in Philz brew that I think was cardomon, it certainly enhanced my drink without overwhelming it.
The staff are always nice and friendly and want to make sure they get your drink order to your liking and for $3.75 for a large coffe that's a good thing!
Would I go back again? Absolutely now that I found a drink that I like!
Saturday, 3/24/12
Rainy day, Philz is doing a good business, the other room where you eat, use the free wifi is packed. Went back for another large Turkish, I asked what's the spice they use in the Turkish coffee, it's Cardamom! Since I have not had brekkie and it is going on 430p I ordered one of their burrito's, the Black Bean Breakfast Burrito. They are made in Sonoma, kept in a fridge (always a good sign) and reheated in the micro. Made with Flour Tortilla, potatoes, eggs, black beans, jack and chedder and seasonings. It was fillling and for $4 it needs to be however, I'm a spice nut, I like my spicy salsa or maybe sri racha on my burritos. Maybe some individual salsa packets to take with the burrito would be perfect? Are you listening Philz? -

First time here....
Tantalizing Turkish - Has some extra added spices in it. The barista recommended it, because i like my coffee black... I was not a fan of the spice at all.
Definitely need to go back and try another flavor because this place has enough hype to give it another couple chances. -

One of their smallest locations in SF but the baristas are probably the fastest. They have your usual pastries and breakfast burritos here. They also have a dedicated bagel station which is pretty awesome. The seating area is across the hall in a different room which is why the coffee area is so small.
I still get my tongue burnt every time the baristas ask me "taste it and tell me if it is OK". I'll learn sooner or later... -
Review from Stefi C.
Pretty much looked like an idiot when we went in and immediately got in line for the cash register without ordering our drinks...as an FYI, you order at the three coffee stations to the left before paying on the right. Seems a little weird, but hey I'm not here to judge.
We tried a cup of the mint mojito iced coffee and canopy of heaven, which were pretty much amazing. I loved how they had their mint leaves in mini garbage cans on the counter..so adorable. The mint mojito was definitely different and really refreshing, but I've gotta say I really loved the canopy of heaven. The flavors reminded me a little of a coffee flavored chocolate or something...(clearly I am one with words).
It was awesome seeing the baristas working right in front of you, and I'm really impressed by the amount of work they put into each drink. I'd love to come here before work but shelling out $4 for a cup of small coffee is definitely tough. Will definitely come back for a weekend pick me up though!Listed in: The Best of SF!

Review from Trang K.
Pretty cool place. Parking was a bit hard but these are the reason I adore this place:
Pet Friendly.
All coffee/expresso orders and individually filtered..separately.
No expresso machine other than the person standing behind the bar. :)
Fresh mint is use...no syrup sweetener..but brown sugar was offered and gladly accepted.
Reasonable prices...and oh yea: GREAT tasting coffee.
I ordered 3 shots of expresso, with brown sugar...a dash of h&h
the sister order Ice mint coffee. She loved it.
PHilz coffee: Please migrate to sac. Thank you...Love a loyal FAN!
