When I have nothing to do on a rainy Saturday or Sunday afternoon, I head to Pets Unlimited. It's the one of my favourite pass-times when I have time to spare.

I immediately head down to the puppies and eww and awww over their cute little, playful ways. I also particularly enjoy looking at the gross reptiles. I find I can sit there and stare at the snacks for hours!

Walking through the fish department is like being in an aquarium. The staff in the fish department are usually far from nice, however, the fish are great to look at. It's soothing.

Admittedly, I'm not a pet owner, nor do I intend to be one. That's for all the other pet lovers on the planet.

That said, this particular Pets Unlimited location is the perfect way to pass a couple of hours with little ones. My three year old grandson thinks it's a zoo. He loves looking at all the animals, talking to Dory, Marlin, Marlin and their friends in the many fish tanks.

And he's particularly fond of the rocks. I can't begin to understand the fascination, but hey...

The best part though is really the staff. They love taking out the animals for kids to get a closer look. And being snake phobic myself, I rush out while the kids are learning about snakes...outside of their tanks. Getting a closer look at a hedge hog on the other hand...way cool.

So if you have kids and need a place to go to get out of the cold, think Pets Unlimited.

I am sad to say our experience with Pets Unlimited was a Huge Nightmare.

We purchased a Hamster, now I do not know a lot about these little animals, and this was told to the staff that helped us.

However, we bought the hamster, all the supplies, cage etc. A few days after we got home, the hamster got what is called wet-tail. The problem was no one told us to look out for this. I had no idea what was happening.

Bottom line, the hamster died. This was very sad day. If the staff had of told us to watch out for this in the first place, we could have taken it back an got it treated. Or better yet, there was pills we could have bought to give it.

So because they told us nothing, it was not a good experience for a first time pet.

A shop like Pets Unlimited may be okay to buy your dog-food or cat-food at - but do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy an animal from a chain store like this.  You are dooming more animals to a life of puppy mills and unscrupulous breeders if you perpetuate this system.  Pets from chain stores are also notoriously disease-ridden.  And don't suggest that by buying one of these glass-caged pets you're "rescuing" it... you're just making a space for the next overpriced animal.

There are so many other options when you want a pet: reputable breeders, shelters, adoptions. An animal should never be an impulse buy - do your homework and find the right source for you.

I love puppies!

Before I begin, I would suggest you read the review of this store by Reviewer Ang M. She makes some very good points that one must take into account.

Onto my review! This particular Pets Unlimited store is crammed with every kind of animal food, treat and other products I could imagine. They try to have a supply that suits all your animal needs. Whether your pet is a dog, spider, snake, cat, rabbit etc...

The pricing for the products isn't that bad. They don't overcharge on a lot of items like some specialty animal stores do. But from time to time you can definitely get dog food cheaper.

The pets are very cute and adorable. The spiders reminded me that I have a phobia but I forgot about them quickly when I saw the snakes which were cool. I was turned off from the experience at one point when I saw a year old dog in a cage where his head was almost touching the roof. That was a bad decision on the employee's part and there should be a law against putting an animal in a cage that is too small for them. The dog was also not that happy but luckily there was a "sold" sign so I know he won't be in there for long.

Pets Unlimited has a wide assortment of pets to choose from. Their staff are very professional and love animals and it shows. They generally sell pure breeds so don't have a heart attack when you see a dog for $1,500! Personally, I don't see the logic when I can go to places such as the SPCA or private owners, and get an animal who has had all their shots for a lot less money. I just don't care about pure breeds or the strange concept of selling them for a high price so much.

As for the ethics of having a place like Pets Unlimited, its a gray world for me. The food selection and pricing is great, and some of the pets, such as fish and spiders, I think are fine. They must keep getting better in their practices and the way they operate the business for dogs, cats and other animals. But for now, I think two solid stars is fair.
