If you're going here for the macarons I would approach cautiously.

Coconut macaron was hard as a rock.
Lemon macaron had a lovely flavouring but the cookie was under cooked.  It felt like eating paste.
Mint macaron was perfect. No hollow spacing found in shell, moist and heavenly smooth chocolate filling.

Those were the only three I tried.  Maybe they were having a bad day with the lemon and coconut macaron.  I might go back just one more time to try their salted caramel and raspberry.

After arriving in Toronto, this was my first stop on my "Eating Toronto Tour"...
After walking what seemed to be an eternity to find this place, I was quickly disapointed with the lack of bakery items ( I was there around 10AM).
The croissants looked like I could have bought them at any grocery stores... For what we paid for the chocolate croissants and a few macaroons, it was not worth it at all!!!

I've been to this place two times. Both were unpleasant experiences.

The first time wasn't their fault, but rather another patron. As I was heading in and she out, I held the door open for her. Then she muttered a racial slur before telling me to go back to my home country. I went in, and the cashier at the time looked as bewildered as I was at the incident. I ordered a croissant and it was cold and stale.

This review isn't based on that though. It's based on my second time entering this establishment.

I came in today for the free macaron event. According to the website, there is one free macaron per person, with each macaron after that purchased at full price and all funds going to a charity.

I went in to order a macaron and something else on the side. I was expecting the macaron to be free, so I thought I'd support the business by ordering something else on top. So when I was told I had to pay for the macaron, it caught me off guard.

The middle aged man at the cash (probably the owner), when questioned about it, muttered on about some bs about what "free" is. He said it was free in the sense that he was giving the money to charity, but I would have to pay anyway. Some other pretentious guy in line laughed.

This is not what the free macaron day website says. It says all customers will receive one for free. I was in a rush to work though, and instead of ditching the purchases I made (which is exactly what I should have done), I just paid for it and left. As soon as I do that, I overhear another customer come in asking about it, and the same guy tells her to come back later for the stuff.

Back at the office, I overhear people saying two different things. Some have said they didn't get theirs for free, while others have. Something like this promo, which is intended to raise awareness for a charity, shouldn't be based on the whim of the cashier who likes to favor some customers over others.

I will never come back to this place again and will persuade others not to either. Starbucks is just across the street if you need your morning coffee, and there's a Tim Hortons two minutes away with fresher baked goods than this place.

Oh, what a letdown. And after I've been telling people how the stuff here is pretty good based on two visits over a year ago. Now that I work down in the financial district, I finally made my way to Petite Thuet for a morning croissant since I was early for work.

Popping in at 8:30am, I'd expect fresh croissants from a real bakery. I saw the pile of croissants they had on top of the glass counter, where they usually have their croissants and figured that they were put there this morning. Paid my $2.50 and took my croissant to go. After my first bite, I knew I wouldn't be finishing this croissant.

    Three strikes:

1 - it was cold inside and out. How do you get a cold croissant first thing in the morning??

2 - the outside wasn't crispy in the least, it reminded me of grocery store croissants.

3 - service was cold to match my croissant.

Petite Thuet is officially off my to-go list!

Looking for some treats to go with my coffee then I saw the Petite Thuet and my eyes lighted up!! Sweets, Pastry and Marcons!!!

Selections was limited... OK they looked like an afterthought as they were at the bottom of the displayed case and only few left...

They were both quite tasty! But the Lemon one has this crumbling outer shell, it just fell apart and has crumbs everywhere?!! The Sea Salt and Carmel one though has a next texture.

I do like the interior vibe of the cafe itself. Maybe I would stay for a coffee next time and try out other of their sweets!

Quick - you're in the core and you need a good baguette - where do you go? Petite Thuet, of course! And while you're there, you can pick up some macarons and croissants too.

At the 1 King Street West location of Petite Thuet, the space is small, but comfortable. Lots of light comes through two walls of windows and the baked goods are fresh; the coffee just right.

It's an interesting mix of offerings at Thuet. The sandwiches here are decent and of high quality, so it makes for a decent lunch option. Prepared food take-away option are available too, but with a pretty price tag. If you're looking for a pre-selected charcuterie assortment, you can find one here - along with pâté and house-made preserves.

A very convenient location for quality baked goods.

Just popped in today to try their macarons since I was having a craving and Nadege was a little farther out of my way then I wanted to go.

I got a raspberry, espresso, salted caramel and chocolate. The texture is nice and so far no hallow tops which is a good start. The raspberry was much too sweet for my liking. The espresso faired better with a rich coffee flavour. The salted caramel mmm the filling is perfect ! I think I might prefer it over nadege's. Yet to eat the chocolate lol.

My only complaint was the service. The man just seemed very spacey and the fact I was standing there, staring at him for like 2 minutes before he gave eye contact was odd. He was nice enough to explain all the different flavours for me though.

Prefer the atmosphere of Nadege but I would go here in a pinch.

I wanted a coffee, but was trying to avoid the chains.  I like the signage on Petite Thuet so I came here for a coffee to go.

Fantastic furniture!  Kinda small, but I don't think I've ever seen the place get very busy, so this is irrelevant.

I ordered a small coffee, but got the medium and was charged for the medium.  Oh well.  Also, they don't have any lactose-free options, not even soy!  Apparently they were out, but I've gotten that excuse twice now.  Not impressed.

Coffee was just okay - nothing exciting or different.  Definitely drinkable.  There were some nice treats in the pastry case, but I wasn't hungry either time I was there.

Don't think I'll be back any time soon.

Had a little breaky here once up on a time. Just a light thing before a winterlicious lunch but it was satisfying.

The décor is great. What they lack in square footage, they make up for in height! And they really use it with some modern art that snakes its way all up a three story wall. Just a few tables, a small counter with barstools is all that's needed. With some crazy acoustics it might sound like there are tons of people there but the traffic is pretty slow and small.

The almond croissant was not mind-blowing, a bit too crusty-crunchy for my liking but still good. The liked the top of crunchy, sliced almonds the best and it was a nice touch that there was some EXTRA butter on the inside.

Also had the cappuccino, very delicious (though I know nothing about coffee) and came in a cute, colourful cup and saucer. They'll bring the bill to the table but I went up to pay. The service was good but not memorable. I'd come again if I'm in the area- a nice alternative to Starbucks.

I have been here a couple times, most recently after going to Starbucks across the street and realizing there was zero seating available.

This girly bakery is cute. There isn't much seating, just a few small tables for two and some counter seats. But this is more of a grab-and-go type place anyways. They have some prepared foods, like jars of homemade soups, sandwiches, etc. in a fridge at the back. I'm sure they make a lot of money from busy Bay Street workers picking up dinner before going home. They have a selection of tarts that look amazing... On my last visit, my friend and I sat there and can't say there's much ambiance. No music. The only noise was drilling from some construction in the building...

On both visits I just got macarons ($2.20 each incl. tax). They were quite nice. I especially like the chai flavour. However, I found that some flavours were more fresh than others and some macarons were not as crisp and light on the outside as they should be. They definitely can't compare to the macarons at Nadege, which are consistently wonderful.

As mentioned by other reviewers, the service here is pretty awful. We walked in and were peering at the macarons, trying to decide what to get. The girl behind the counter doesn't greet us but just says bluntly, "we don't have all the flavours listed there today; there's NO salted caramel!" She did inform us of a few additional flavours available, including the chai one and also a pomegranate one. She put them in plastic baggies even though we said we were going to sit down. (Well, at least she let us drink our Starbucks there without getting mad). I don't really understand how one can be so morose when surrounded by lovely sweet delicacies!

It's pretty much across the street from my Toronto office... yup, it's dangerous BUT it's also a fabulous alternative to the Starbucks that's across the street!

The americanos are earthy and rich - and oh so delicious that you don't even need to add any dairy (of course they don't have dairy free options, but I suppose that's irrelevant)... Although I hear if there's enough demand, they'll start to carry almond milk (*fingers crossed for my next Toronto business trip!*).

The ambiance is eclectic but welcoming - although the girl behind the counter was on the phone when I walked in and continued to be on the phone for about 3 more minutes before taking my order.

One last note: the pastries and food look delish (didn't try any though)... I was hoping to stumble across banana bread (my new addiction), but alas no. Oh, and they have a back wall filled with homemade jam in every possible flavor combination you could think of! Yum!

This is what Yelp does to me: I look for a place to snack, drink and read for an hour and instead of choosing Starbucks and it's familiarity (across the street) I headed over here to try it out so I can come back and Yelp all about it!

Here's why I'm sort of glad I came here over Starbucks:
Their selection of food is very cute looking and yummy BUT it's unlabelled and when questioned about it the guy behind the counter could have been more helpful since it was very clear as I was not having an easy time deciding what I wanted with a pretty varied bakery selection.

I ended up with a blackberry and apricot tart and I loved it. Far better than any baked pastry good Starbucks or Second Cup cooks up.
If I lived in 1 King West, I believe I would not shop for jam or salad dressing anywhere else as all of that seemed homemade specifically for Petite Thuet (correct me if I'm wrong though).

Here's why I would have preferred Starbucks over this place:
The moyen "medium" latte was around $3, smaller than a grande and not mind blowingly different from Starbucks. So a latte from Starbucks would have been more satisfying I believe.

I applaud their attempt to be all environmentally friendly as their utensils didn't seem to be plastic but corn cutlery instead, but then again I was disappointed by lack of mugs.

Why I will come here again:
To try out their coffee and macarons.

But I do hope for friendly service next time. Bottom line, come in for the food and not their drink.

Right at the corner of Yonge and King, Petite Thuet is barely noticeable amongst their big coffee chains neighbours, like Starbucks, Tim Hortons and Second Cup.  However, if you're on the hunt for non-franchised, non-cookie-cutter, rich and legit cup of coffee or espresso to start/ end a typically hectic and extremely stressful day on Bay Street, this little sophisticated and elegant french cafe is perfect for you.  I love their coffee and espresso. Particularly the espresso.  I like my espressos the way I like my red wines: smooth, full bodied, bold, and dark. Their coffee and espresso is a tad more expensive than their franchised competitors, but I don't mind spending extra money on quality, especially for espressos. Do you know how hard it is to find good espresso in the Bay Street area? Very hard because neither Second Cup or Starbucks (the most common coffee cafes in the area) serve good espressos.

A word of caution: they do not have lids for their take-out cups for espressos. There were so many times I wanted to surprise a special somebody at his office with their espressos, but couldn't. A lid is necessary to keep the drink hot and flavorful when transporting it elsewhere. Grrrrr.. I would have scored lots of brownie points with him if they had proper take-out supplies for their fine espressos. =P

I've past this place several times and finally decided to venture in after having sampled some French macarons from there recently. They were ok. I'd recommend the hazelnut one - has the right amt of sweetness, nuttiness and chew. I found the raspberry too sweet.

What I really want to write about is the almond croissant. Was possibly the croissant of my life (and I've sampled several). Flaky and crunchy, with the right amount of filling and covered in slivered almonds and icing sugar. Delicious and possibly worth the pricey $3 once in a while...

As for the service, there is much to be desired. The staff was very unfriendly! You'd think they would be more welcoming being surrounded by the smell of fresh baked goods all day...

    Eew eew eew.

How could such a beautiful little place elicit such a strong response from me? Let me try to simplify it to a quick formula:

    Handling money
    + not washing hands
+ picking up my baked goods with dirty hands
+ pretentiousness when I ask about your unlabelled products (I know it's an eclair! I just want to know what flavours are in it!)
+ carelessly throwing them in a box upside down (!)
    = yuck.

Foodwise, definitely yummy. My chocolate eclair and mint-chocolate macaron were both light and just sweet enough to please my palate. However, the food is Petite Thuet's only redeeming quality.

The service clearly leaves to be desired. When I pay $5 for an eclair, I prefer that you handle it with care. Also, immediately returning to the phone the instant you're done with my transaction without saying goodbye doesn't impress me either.

    What happened to customer service?

Such a disappointment. There are other bakeries that at least look like they appreciate my business. (See: Nadège on Queen St W. http://www.yelp.ca/biz...)

Dropped by Petite Thuet on a Friday for a little post-lunch lunch and I'm almost regretting it because I know I'm going to have to drop by more often. Considering it doubles my usual lunch time budget, this could be a catastrophe waiting to happen.

I've swung by to have their coffees and scones before (lemon & blackcurrent scone cannot be beat) but when I went by for lunch I had my eye on the real brunch prize, the infamous croque monsieuer.

As I understand it, the croque monsieur is a buttered, grilled biscuit-y bread, thicker but in flavour to challah bread, with delicious melted cheese and ham. This thing looks small but it is a monster when it comes to taste and just as rich and filling. The sandwich itself runs just about $8, combined with a coffee just squeaked over the $11 mark but if you're getting scones or a dessert item too, it could come to about fifteen bucks.

But trust me, you will not regret it and will be going back soon.

The staff is super professional and dare I say, charming? And the seating is suited to a quick drop by, with barstools and high tables as well as a few small, slightly cramped tables and chairs. You don't need to stay too long though, the food will be gone sooner than you know it.

Fantastic but expensive. I love the pastries and the macarons.  I had a pain au chocolat which was extremely flaky (in a good way).  Macarons were out of this world.  Certainly the best in Toronto!

Perhaps not quite as fresh as if you went to the HQ but a nice place for a tiny slice of indulgence in the financial district.

Cute set of couches but they always seem to have people sitting in them.

A boutique look to a bakery/cafe but strangely NOT any of the good things I look for in a cafe, which include cozy, loiter-able (I know that's not a word), affordable and good for people watching.

The food looks less than fresh- tastes average with a higher than average price tag.

The croissant and other pastries are alright, but with an inflated price tag.  I don't mind paying more for sitting in/ambience.  But this place doesn't seem like a nice place to loiter.  At 2.50$ per croissant, I'd rather get it from carousel @ the market (a bettter croissant by far) and only $1.

Skip this place.  There are a lot of better options in the area- even Starbucks across the street, or the cafe's on Church/Front street (Lettieri, Second Cup, Starbucks, and of course my indie fave: Hank's)

Located at the corner of Yonge and King, Petite Thuet is definitely forgettable.  To its unwelcoming staff, to its terrible Macarons... I would much rather wander over to the St. Lawrence Market for quality pastries.  I went with the intent on trying their macaroons, and the selection was slim (most of the flavours posted were not available), the girl behind the counter looked like she didn't want to be there, ever heard of service with a smile?  The I had the salted caramel macaron.  Although the filling was yummy, the macaron itself stuck to my teeth, and was too chewy.  At $1.95 per macaron, I think I could've fared better at the St. Lawrence Market.  I also bought a lemon meringue tart, which I have yet to crack open, but I will post an update once I dig into that baby.

I chose their Vanilla Eclair and a Butter Croissant, along with an Earl Grey Tea. I wanted to try their Almond Croissant as I read in a review that they're "party in the mouth", but they were sold out. I didn't find their butter croissant to be exceptionally amazing, but they were definitely light, airy, and a bit crunchy. Their vanilla eclair was perfect in taste, texture, and presentation, so I was pretty satisifed with my visit!

I've been to Petite Thuet a few times now. It's conveniently located in the heart of the financial district. You no longer need to trek out to the edges of downtown to find some great pastries. Petite Thuet makes some excellent chocolate croissants. I don't think they are on par with what you get at Clafouti, but they are still pretty damn good. The place also makes some pretty killer sandwiches. I had a Lobster Salad sandwich recently -- a bit pricey at 9$ -- which was particularly good. Finally, they also make a mean americano.
