I wish we had this place in Toronto. What a great market. It kind of reminded me of Trader Joe's in San Francisco. Everything is so fresh and beautifully displayed! The staff were really nice. We got some sandwiches and salads to have as a picnic in the nearby Citadel. All the prepared foods were delicious.

We loved this place so much we tried to go again to pick up food for a hike, but they were closed on Labor Day. Really a great food emporium.

    Pretty ok for Halifax....

Solid selection of fruits and veggie, good selections of ethnic foods... overpriced meats and fish

I used to go to Pete's almost everyday when I worked in downtown Halifax and I still find myself stopping in for food/goodies when visiting the city now.  Of course, it helps that my friend lives super close to Pete's, but I always find that I can get what I need there instead of making a longer trip to the grocery store.  I go to Pete's for quick meals, treats, and grocery items and I even checked out their gluten free section this time around.

In general, I've found Pete's prices to be a bit high sometimes (this now includes the gluten free items), but the quick meals can be pretty standard.  I do find the salad bar is still expensive for what you get, but it's popular with the office crowd so it sells.

Customer service can be hit or miss, but never usually bad.  Usually the cashiers are less perky than the food serving staff, but I understand that as I used to work on cash myself long ago - not the funnest job in the world.  I know I'll be back to Pete's on my next trip to Halifax, so I'd say check this place out if you're nearby, it has lots to offer.

I remember when Pete's first opened in its Dresden Row location. Because I didn't step foot in there until months after. No particular reason other than I didn't quite know what to expect and I wasn't as adventurous as I am now. I was a young university student and I stuck with what I was familiar with. Of course once I did my world was turned.

Coming from small town Newfoundland and having done no traveling at all at that point, having markets such as these were unheard of for me. So stepping through the sliding doors was like transporting to another country. A country where fruits and breads and treats were visible, side by side with each other and people socialized while they shopped. It wasn't so much a chore doing into Pete's as it was an experience. With the amount of variety they have, going in there can always result in a new discovery.

Along with their grocery options, they also offer sushi to go and a lunch section with soups, salads and sandwiches. I do enjoy their sandwiches and paninis but when I get lunch here, it's usually to get a salad which are easily the best in the city. Be sure to also grab a fruit smoothie. They're delicious and a more-than-suitable substitute for Booster Juice's winter hours (ie. they have none).

One thing about Pete's that I remember when they first opened was the grand piano they had in the centre of the store. During the middle of the afternoons, there would often be someone there playing tunes and it made a world of difference for the atmosphere. I can understand why they removed it but it's still an aspect I miss.

Every time I step into this place I feel like I've left Halifax for a cool European city. Everything is fresh and delicious and there is no sign of frozen crap! I even found my favorite tropical fruits (Mangosteen and Rambutan) here! Ridiculously expensive, but still...!!!

I spend minutes looking at the cheese collection and dreaming for a day when I can buy and eat them all!

Something else I buy every time is the stir fry mix of vegetables. They're the right vegetables and the right sizes! Some Cantonese noodles and traditional soy sauce and you're in heaven! Mamma Mia!!!

I dig pretty much everything about this place. For somebody that lives pretty much off of fruit, veggies, bread and cheese, you can't go wrong.  I tend to buy my produce here instead of the grocery store. Price wise, it's totally reasonable, but the stuff tends to last 10 times longer and actually tastes like food! What a concept!

    Plus, the sushi? Amazing.

Being inside Pete's Frootique for an eco-conscious foodie can be dizzying. Everything is brilliantly coloured and neatly piled sky high. This is health food shopping for hedonists who aren't used to going to health food stores. The words "organic" and "natural" are peppered so liberally on all of the attractive packaging, that picking out the best brands and products can be just a little bit overwhelming.

All of the fruits and vegetables are suspiciously gorgeous and there is even a dedicated organics section. The fish and meats look bright and healthy and are served by knowledgeable staff. The prices are high, but there are a few things that you can't find anywhere else.

Despite the very friendly staff though, I couldn't help but be reminded that Pete's is very much a big box store at heart. The European Deli part of its business dictates that many of its products are imported. What's worse, it's all extremely heavily packaged. I suppose all processed foods are so wasteful these days, but it just frustrates me to see the silly juxtaposition of frivolously individually packaged items right next to biodegradable picnic ware and "earth friendly" cleaning supplies.

Back in my poor university student days, I managed to choose the one downtown apartment that was as far away as possible from all of the peninsula grocery stores. Mostly because I'm a genius. This meant that a good portion of my martini budget had to be redirected in order to pay for imported European goods when all I really needed was a box of pizza pops and a Lipton Sidekicks or two.

Did I realize that by paying the $20 for roundtrip cab fare to a regular-person grocery I could easily save the $50 more that I'd spend on the Pete's version of everything? No. Again, because I'm a genius.

Shopping at Pete's has become astronomically more fun after growing out of my student days. Instead of being a major money-suck, now I can enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed: for weekend browsing of fancy foods and the occasional pick-up of that special ingredient that will instantly upgrade any meal or occasion. Haute couture cheeses, fresh flowers, smoothies, sandwiches, sushi, baguettes, sauces, spices...it's the home hobby chef's dream!

Three star for prices, four star for selection, two star for student living.

Pete's is Halifax's only larger specialty food store, covering both local and/or organic foods as well as imported foods from around the world, with a focus on the UK and other European countries.

A few examples of what you can find at Pete's: Ghee. Bread that deserves its name. Special cuts of meat. Cherry Coke. Irn-Bru. Organic peppers. Organic blueberries. Italian ladyfingers. And so on. Also, if you are looking for European chocolates, even though Pete's selection is small compared to the likes of Denninger's in Southern Ontario, you have better chances of finding them at Pete's than elsewhere in the city.

Halifax is of course a lot better with Pete's than without, but there are various things that annoy me about it.

First, it is just amazingly expensive. Mass-produced packaged products cost at least 10% more than the exact same product at the Superstore or at Sobeys, implying that I don't like to shop only at Pete's - for me, Pete's only works as an additional place to stop by. Many European imports are more than twice, sometimes more than three times as expensive as in Europe (take for example Ritter Sport: $3.44 incl. HST at Pete's, $0.90-1.50 including tax in Austria or Germany). Many of the organic groceries are so expensive that even if I had a six-figure salary I wouldn't want to buy them.

Second, even though it has a bit of everything, the selection within most categories is small. Pete's would benefit from a bigger downtown space.

Third, there is a heavy focus on UK products. It would be nice to see some continental European pastries, for example.

Fourth, even though Pete's stocks breads from many different bakeries (including Julien's and La Vendeenne), it always only has a very small number of breads from each bakery, and the selection varies all the time following a pattern that I haven't yet been able to decipher.

So overall, yes, it's great that Halifax has Pete's, but the downtown location should be larger, and Pete's should have competitors that help drive its often outrageous prices down.

Pete's pretty much has the monopoly on the veggie market in Halifax (aside from the farmer's market of course).  Large, spacious and brightly lit the store has an air outdoors feel that makes you think you are at an outside fruit/veggie stand.  The aromas of the fresh fruit and veggies is quite pleasing and fresh.
I've always had great customer service in all my transaction here, from the salad bar to the check out.
I wish they would have a stronger local focus and organic focus.
Wheelchair accessible, though some of the stands are piled a bit high to reach.

The best thing about Pete's is the limes. Limes aren't native to Nova Scotia, so I shouldn't be so picky about them, but I am. I've gotten Superstore limes before and they're all dry. Dry limes are no good when your drink needs a lime. And that's why I love Pete's: good limes.  Also, in case you missed it, good limes are a metaphor of how the produce there is just better. (the limes really are better).

Other things I love about Pete's: salad bar for lunch, Montreal bagels, the explosion burger from the butcher (seriously, do your BBQ a favour in the summer and get one of these. Husband calls them Halifax Explosion burgers), and Mary's cinnamon rolls. That's right, Mary's cinnamon rolls even after Mary's has closed on a Saturday.

For all those state siders....think of this as a British "Whole Foods" without any intention of conquering the world and flooding the market with 6000 stores....at least anytime soon!

Great selection of unique fruits (e.g., dragonfruit, rambutan), prepared foods, bakery (macarons!), butcher, fish monger, and specialty items to boot! We found and bought some sticky toffee puddings to bring back with us....mmmmm.....sticky....toffee....pudding. We found the prices reasonable but not the best - maybe a bit on the high side. But the quality of the produce looks really good. We also noticed a bin in the back with specials - mostly older stock produce that wasn't selling fast enough and were priced cheaper at half price.

It's located in an indoor market/mall/building on the quaint Dresden Row with 2 entrances - one to the outside world and one to the mall. So, 2 checkout points for options. We chose the former since the latter looked packed. If I lived here, I'd definitely come here for specialty items....Pete's can't compete with Atlantic for price, but it wins in the variety and quality department hands down! For those visitors staying at/near the waterfront, take the short walk up the hill - it's worth it!

Grocery shopping is one of my favourite activities of life in general. I actually should've entered it into my Yelp profile. That's just the way I roll. So to live just a 7 minute walk away from Pete's Frootique, you can imagine why this is a more than ideal situation.

Pete's Frootique has the habit of washing me into a soothed and languid state of mind. Walking through the spaces of fresh produce and specialty products is enough to add a little extra sheen to my grocery bag.

With an obvious focus on healthy living and eco friendly, products are selective, organic and sometimes a bit more pricey. If you buy in bulk, this may not be the best bang for your buck. But with a consistent stock of fresh, quality goods, shopping at Pete's is a win-win.

You can find lots of specialty sauces, pastes, juices, cooking ingredients, etc that you wouldn't get at other grocery stores. Its not exclusively organic or "healthy" brands, but the store is selective in what they bring in. (Eg- Still offer Regular Kraft Peanut Butter, but they only carry the small containers and not the lower calorie version.)

There are lots of extras around the store too. The sweets bar in the center is dream-worthy. Fresh, quality cut meats and all the cheese you could ever dream of hold the gateway to my own sister's heart. Lots of delicious (smelling) soaps, beauty product and eco friendly focus lie at the back of the store for browsing. Although the real kicker is the Smoothie / Sandwich / Salad Bars that are beside the store exit. Boys oh boys, is that ever a treat. Fresh, real fruit/veggie smoothies, gelato delights, design-your-own salads, and yummy sandwich options make it hard to pass up. And its all quite cost efficient.

Pete's definitely has an emphasis on fresh foods and quality living. A great place for scrumptious, healthy finds.

I'm feeling lethargic. It's been a busy day. I came into work an hour earlier than usual and several late afternoon caffeine injections haven't succeeded in bringing me from zombie mode back to human status. I feel like my only chance for resuscitation is 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep in a dark cave. However, that's not on the current docket, so I must persevere. I slump a little lower in my chair, when a co-worker comes over and hesitantly, for fear that I may be a little icked, offers me the rest of her brown boxed salad. I take it without hesitation. A Pete's Frootique salad, regardless of it being half eaten, is not something you turn down. The box, despite its small appearance, is quite spacious and packs a surprising amount of goodness.

If you go into Pete's Frootique and veer right, you'll see the salad bar. Greens, various veggies and fruits, nuts and seeds, cheeses, and tons of dressings, are all on display. The usually attentive employee grabs a dish and collects ALL of the items as you choose. You can have as many things in your salad as they have - and that's a lot of options! So currently, I'm munching on a spinach salad with a poppy seed dressing, loaded with feta, dried fruit, nuts and seeds, shredded carrots and olives. I feel alive! I feel back in action! So if you're feeling like a zombie, or are simply interested in having a healthy lunch, I recommend Pete's for a salad. They run around $7 for a small, which seems like a lot, but you'll feel satisfied and rejuvenated post consumption. Take it from me, former zombie woman returned to regular human woman form, post a delicious, albeit half eaten salad.

Grocery shopping enthusiast?  Me?  Only when I'm at Pete's!!

I'm not exactly an avid grocery shopper- I'll usually put it off as long as possible until there's practically nothing left in my fridge.  I just find the whole deal overwhelming.  Organic or not?  No name brand or mainstream labels?  Shopping can be complicated stuff :p

Pete's is different- there is something there for everyone, and the shopping experience is actually enjoyable.  At Pete's there is a wide variety of fresh produce up for grabs, even varieties I've never heard of- and though it tends to be a little pricier than what you might find at the major grocery chains, the stuff is actually so fresh that it's worth the extra pennies (one of the most annoying thing about grocery stores- for me anyway- is having to pick through umpteen fruit bins in pursuit of ripe, unbruised fruits.  No worries about that here).  And if you're into organic products, there is a wide selection of wholesome organics to choose from.  Again, it's not always cheap, but you get what you pay for, and that it freshness and taste.

Besides produce, Pete's also has a very decent selection of deli products and grains.  I don't usually use these sections much, because they do tend to be pricey, and for the same cuts of meat that I could find at Sobey's etc. That said, I have made deli purchases and I have been impressed with the quality.

To add to your grocery shopping experience, stop by the in-store salad bar and the juice bar.  The salads are very tasty and made with freshest greens-a great little pick-me-up after an afternoon of shopping.  I recently tried the juice bar, and I have to say I am definitely a fan.  At first I was concerned about trying it, because in my experience juice bars often use supplements like bee pollen (I'm allergic).  After reassurance from the folks at the juice bar that my drink would not contain the pollen, I happily indulged in a berry smoothie, and it was divine! Since then, I've been a repeat customer at the juice bar. Deelish!!

Oh, one more thing: if you want a great holiday gift idea (or gift idea for any occasion), why not try a tasty fruit basket made with fresh Pete's produce?  I gave one to a friend of mine, and she loved it.  Guess she's a fan, too!

Whenever I'm in downtown Halifax I always head into Pete's. It's a great grocery market with lots of local & organic produce, fresh cheeses & meats and a great selection of imported snacks. This is one of the only places in Canada you can buy a Galaxy chocolate bar or Walker's brand crisps. The prices are almost double UK retail but if you're craving something, sometimes price isn't an issue. There are chocolates from Germany & Switzerland, a great selection of teas and honeys - as well as basic kitchen essentials like tinfoil and milk. It's similar to Whole Foods and Pusateri's in Toronto, but without the preachiness of Whole Foods or the high-end mark-up.

The fresh sandwiches and soups for take-out or dine-in at the front of the store are delicious, and the juice bar serves up a fantastic menu of fresh juices and smoothies. My favorite is the "Power Up" - a freshly squeezed mix of carrot, apple, lemon and ginger.

If you take the time to walk through the aisles you'll find some unique items that you can't find anywhere - like Halifax-based Sweet Things gourmet  homemade marshmallows.

I'm first going to say that I was quite disappointed when I found out this wasn't an emporium for the gays.  I truly thought that the 'fruit' pun in the name was being directed at gay men.  Boy was I sad when I found out it wasn't.  Still, I brushed my shoulders off and got over it.  I made a list about Pete's Frootique that I would like to share with you:

    - Very strange entrance, entering directly into the fruits.
    - LOTS of fruits and veggies.
    - Glorified grocery store?
    - Dessert section - YUM!
    - Some canned goods, oh and pre-made packed risotto.
    - Sweet, cheaper milk.
    - Wait a second, there's an upstairs with a little cafe?
    - And there's a cookie corner!
    - I can smell the fish section.
    - They've got a juice bar and ready-to-go meals with a cute little dining area.

So, I was mostly pleased with my experience... even after I found out it wasn't a drag queen paradise.

    I love this grocery store!

(stands up) Hello, my name is Courtney, and i'm addicted to Pete's Frootique. (sits)

Although the pricing at 'Pete's' can be a little (or a lot) outrageous, you just have to search for the bargains. For example, in late spring/early summer Pete's repeatedly had pints of driscoll's raspberry's on sale: 4 containers for $5!

I generally find the produce (especially veggies) at Pete's to be pretty reasonably priced too. Quite a wide selection of organics too.

The best part about Pete's is the wide range of produce they carry from around the world: Daikon, Kumquats, Japanese Eggplant, you name it~ Pete's has it!

The really expensive parts of the store (in case you wanted to avoid them) are the body/natural living section as well as the deli.

All in all, I highly recommend Pete's! Everything is great here! Salad bar, smoothies- everything!

Pete's Frootique is like a security blanket, I feel safer with it around. Thanks to them I always know that if I'm in need of some fancy comfort food I will be able to go to Pete's and find it. Usually I do my shopping at other stores, because the prices here are a bit prohibitive for those of us on lower incomes, even if, like me, you are okay with spending most of your earnings on food.

The produce selection is extensive full of exotic fruits and vegetables that you will only find here; there is a smaller but still impressive organics zone in another wing. Pete's is also the best place in town for specialty items like salts, oils, ready made sauces, etc. The candy and cookie aisle is filled with imported treats that you may have never seen before, as well as some more recognizable favorites. (Tim Tams, anyone?) You'll find a wide array of spices and seasonings, nuts and seeds and dried fruits. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

To take best advantage of the Pete's experience my advice is to set aside a night this summer to have a picnic but don't plan a menu. Just go grab a basket, wander the store and choose from the delicious spread they're offering.

Lastly, how can you go wrong with a place that makes its own fudge in the middle of the store? I recommend that you not walk to close to the fudge stall, lest you get sucked in.

(I should note that Pete's does not always come through on Asian products. For things in this realm, you're usually better off checking Taishan or Ca Hoa, both on Young Street, a short walk from Pete's.)

Pete's Frootique has some of the most unique fruits and vegetables that I have come across in my days. My sons loves this location as he is often found enjoying something down at Pete's on Saturday with the boys normally a shake of some sort. Sometimes to me I find the experience like and adventure but sometimes as well to embarrassed to ask what is this and what do I do with that?

At Pete's the staff are really helpful and will offer some great ideas as to how to cook a certain vegetable or what it might go best with. I like the layout of this location and like Lindsay said the cookie corner I must say is one of my favourite corners. There is a fish section but I pass right by that.

As well the upstairs cafe is really nice to be able to sit and look out of street and see all the hustle and bustle while I sit and sip a tea and enjoy my cookie  now that is relaxing.

I always said that I feel it is expensive to really eat healthy but hey I am trying.

Pete's Frootique is a veritable cornucopia of produce.  Wander in the front door and enter arguably the best fruit and veg selection in all of Halifax.

It's amazing what Pete's can do with a relatively small footprint.  Produce - local when in season - lines the walls and refrigerated cases, full to overflowing with all sorts of varieties you've never heard of. You'll also find a miniature butcher's shop, a cheese assortment, a bakery counter and dozens of ready-to-go offerings.  In the midst of all this is the mostly-imported grocery section, full of items you never knew you needed until now.  Water crackers, imported soy sauces, exotic teas - all here at Pete's.

Pete's is like a candy store for the healthy living crowd.  Natural foods, whole foods, local foods - it's all here, ripe for the picking.

So Pete's does have a lot of veggies, and a neat section of different nuts in bins. They also have a nice selection of specialty and gourmet food in the back, some great cheeses, and a whole bunch of really tasty salads in the deli section.

But really, the bottom line here is the veggies. And as far as Halifax goes, Pete's tend to be the freshest and the best quality - however, the entire place is also overpriced. I don't really find that the price is justified by the marginal increase in quality over the supermarkets, but I do find myself shopping here from time to time for one reason: location. I happen to have a class right above Pete's, so it's just so easy to go into the place afterward. Damn you Pete, and your alluring veggie displays!

I know Pete's is predominantly known as a grocery store, but I'm rarely there to get groceries. I will admit, they do have the best Fuji Apples in the city, but beyond this, it's generally too far a walk for me to carry a full load of groceries home

That being said, I still frequent Pete's, specifically, the lunch line. And much like the rest of Pete's, the food is top quality and expensive.

When you go to Pete's for lunch (and judging by the line up and wait time, a lot of people do) you have a few really great options. First, there is the salad bar, where you can get a salad with just about anything under the sun in it. Even the small salad is huge and very tasty. A brief warning: The quality of your salad will vary depending on who is making it, but it's almost always great.

After salad there is a soup and sandwich bar with another large variety of options. Feel free to ask for a soup sample if you're torn between two types or looking to try something new!

Pete's also has a hot bar with a meal that rotates daily. Tuesday (Stir Fry), Wednesday (Pasta), and Thursday (South of The Boarder) are my personal favorites.

With all this great food, there has to be a catch, right? Well, unfortunately there is: It's very expensive. You will find it difficult to get out of there for less than 10 dollars, which, in my opinion, is a lot of money for a lunch.

Still, it's great food and worth the splurge every now and then (preferably now!).

Pete Luckett is a greengrocer with a mission: to provide his customers with the freshest fruit and vegetables this side of a roadside farm stand. There's a bit of a premium for this freshness and quality, of course, but in many cases, it's worth it.

There's always something exotic in the produce section at Pete's - from Mangosteen to Persimmons, and there's generally someone knowledgeable nearby who can explain how to prepare and eat the most unusual things - if Pete himself isn't already explaining it to the customer ahead of you.

The shop also has a large international grocery section, and specializes in British imports, including candy and snacks from the UK.

There's a butcher, a seafood counter, a cheese and deli-meat counter and prepared foods with lots of delicious salads and snacks for takeout.

Perhaps best of all: the salad bar, where you can choose your own ingredients from the vast array before you - at which point, the counter staff will whip it all up into a little Chinese takeaway carton for you, so you can either enjoy it upstairs, at a cosy table overlooking the street...or back at work.

If you want healthy, fresh and delicious, you'll find it at Pete's.

For all of you salad-lovers out there, I highly recommend that you go to Pete's salad bar for a delicious, made-to-order salad from their salad bar.

Voted by Halifax Coast readers for Best Salad, Pete's salad bar includes every type of vegetable that you can imagine and a wide assortment of salad fixings including chic peas, kidney beans, trail mix, pasta, raisins and more. Pete's also offers a full assortment of salad dressings, including their own homemade specialty dressings, and provides the option of adding roasted chicken or pork to your salad for a small fee.

Moving from Toronto and being a serious "foodie"  I was worried about finding the quality and assortment of food I've come to expect in Toronto...with Pusatari, Whole Foods and Brunos within a five minute drive from my door.

Silly me!   No need to worry when there's Pete's Frootique... the only place in Halifax (along with the branch in Bedford) that carries such a wide selection of cheeses from around the world, a fantastic "Butcher Shop" ...really the only place in town where you can get out of the ordinary cuts of meat, the freshest fish and seafood,  free range and organic chickens,  wild and organically farmed fish,  grass fed beef...I could go on forever.   And did I mention a knowledgeable and curteous staff...well they are awesome too!

Breads from the best bakeries in and around Halifax are there to tempt you and they even import my Montreal Bagels!    A deli bar to rival any with a bazillion choices from at least 8 different kinds of olives,  marinated veggies, salads to go and even a selection of ready to heat dinner entrees.

Onto dry goods....nowhere else has my Muir fire roasted tomatoes or San Marzano either for that matter.  Huge selections of every oil imaginable (some very pricey to the more moderate), interesting pastas and dried beans...I love it all.

All those things are wonderful, but I think my favorite area to hang out in is the produce section.   I am mindful of where my food comes from, and trying to eat locally and seasonally, so it's wonderful to find a place that I can find fresh herbs, organic produce, without having to wait for saturday mornings.

I love a grocery store where it is next to impossible to make a bad choice. Good quality, healthy, different food.

Fresh, High Quality, Great Service....High Prices. But not unreasonable.

Those are the best words that describe Pete's Frootique and European Delicatessen. This store offers similar foods and food sections as the regular grocery stores, but with a European flare to it. They focus a lot on items from various countries and have a nice selection of organic products as well.
The service is incredible. Sometimes its difficult to grab an employee since they are always running around. However when you do catch one with your employee catching net device (I made my own from rope and a net I had when I went fishing), they will stick with you until they are satisfied that you are completely satisfied.
Their prices are a bit on the "pricey" side. You can definitely find some of the same products in other grocery stores for a few dollars less. But their unique selection will always keep me coming back.
If you are from out of town and have never been to "Pete's" as well call it, I highly suggest you try the signature, "Pete's Salad." It costs a pretty penny but you can definitely see where the money went.

I get frustrated every time I walk in this place.  Yes, they have a nice selection of produce and it is by far the best place to get organic produce when you can't make it to the farmer's market.  Beyond that, they seem to be trying to be too many things at once.  Yes, they carry higher end "boutique" type items, but they are missing out on the selection.  They carry some natural, alternative, organic, whatever you want to call them items, but again, lack in the selection department.  Why is it that I only have one choice for soy yogurt?  Forget about trying to buy gluten free items here.  While they carry a couple of gluten free baking items, I was struggling to find all gluten free items needed to bake one recipe.  The prices are easily beat between Planet Organic, the Superstore, and the Farmers market.  You will find me here only as a last resort...like when I need Old Bay for crabs :)
