I do not often frequent restaurants in East Vancouver, but the UYE event here on Yelp caught my eye, and the thought of eating pizza was simply irresistible.

I ordered the pulled pork, although I must admit that just about every single pizza on the menu looked good. I do not pretend to understand the differences between gluten free and non gluten free pizza's, but I may have to seriously rethink my previous preferences after tonight. The decor and artsy creative method of showing drink/food specials on objects and doors also impressed me too. A cute little restaurant/bar which is well tucked away. I will certainly make a future attempt to eat there again.

Perch is synonymous with Yum in my vocabulary.
I've stumbled down here after a many late nights due to how close it was to my old home initially  and after getting to know the place because it is the perfect mixture of kill me hangover food that still feels good quality and healthy. It is also a feel good spot, you know those times when you're really enjoying the company your with but can't seem to string together coherent conversation? Well don't worry you don't need to, there's so much to look at and do here. Such a fan of the ever evolving walls of Vancouverites artists work for sale, video game in the corner and comfortable multi- level seating. I suppose having a friend as a bartender here lends to the hominess of the spot but even if you don't know the servers, you're sure to get great service as everyone seems super friendly.
The food is a bit of an eclectic mix, seems to be the sort of place you could take anyone and they'd find something on the menu to their taste. I had the pizza scrambler last time I was there, I think it was a featured brunch item, the sandwiches are always a win and they have killer Caesars here too!
Also noticed a man get off his bike, and sweep the steps with a broom he carried on his bike, he came inside we chatted for a bit, the owner supports him coming around and sweeping up for food or money perhaps, not sure which was the case that day but it further lent to the warm community feel of the spot. Good eats, good times.

Who knew that GF pizza could be so good? I had the chicken/cashew/chili pizza, which comes as a deal on Fridays for $14 with a pint of R&B beer. Put leftovers in the fridge when I got home, and the leftover elves had gobbled it by morning, with a note that said, "Buuurrrp."

The restaurant is small, the decor is unadorned industrial, and it's a bit noisy, but service is super laid-back, and the atmosphere is chill. It's the restaurant equivalent of an all-ages show. They don't bring the bill until you absolutely ask for it. So we stayed and stayed, watching the hip kids come and go.

Apparently they were having some issues with a tenant in the building above that might have forced the shutdown of the Perch, but according to their Facebook page, the issue has been resolved, and the restaurant can stay open. Yay!

Was looking forward to dining here on a Saturday Night so I grabbed my 79 year old Dad and drove through the snow to get there. When we showed up it was pretty busy and the waiter/host asked if we were here for a birthday party. We said no we were just here to eat. He then asked if we had a groupon and we said yes we did. His reply was that it was too busy for us to use our groupon.  I asked what he meant and he said that they didn't have enough pizza crusts since they were so slammed. We could stay and eat if we didn't use our groupon though. DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE??? I told him we had driven a ways to get there but he didn't care. I was so angry by that point that I definitely wasn't sticking around to try their food.

Came at 2pm on a weekend, Ordered tofu nuggets with Thai peanut sauce as an entree and two pizzas. The tofu was well displayed, tender with crispy sides, but the sauce was a tad too salty. The pizzas have thin crispy crust, slightly burnt at the edges, and not thoroughly baked at other parts. Perhaps the chef was inexperience in heat control. since the restaurant was not particularly busy, there was no reason to rush. The chicken pizza with cashew nuts had oregon seeping through the teeth with each bite. Unfortunately the tomato sauce was unevenly spread and could be too overpowering sometimes. It does get more spicy as you had more bites, so beware if you are not one accustomed to chilis. The BBQ pork was served with coleslaw topping, an interesting combination. It has a sour tinge and would have been a great appetizer and done the pizza and itself more credit if it was served separate, since the pizza was already sour and soggy from the tomato sauce. Again, the tomato sauce was overpowering it was quiet hard to taste the rest of the ingredients at all. In fact, it makes the pizza so soggy, it can't be picked up by hand. also, the cheese did not stay on the crust, and got pulled away.

Came back for Saturday brunch.  Hooray.

Our table of ridiculous opened the place up, and the dudes running the joint humoured us flawlessly.  Questions answered, jokes made, and the almond milk and coffee just kept coming.  Service Jackpot.  Added bonus: crazy metal music.

I had a tasty tofu scramble, whilst my pals sampled an array of non vegan items.  We were all nicely satisfied with our choices.  In hindsight I think asking for light daiya on my scramble would have been best.  Just something to think about you vegans out there.

Oh man, these guys have great pizza. Even my boyfriend, who eats gluten like mad, loved it. I had the bbq pulled pork pizza (pulled pork? on a pizza? the best!) while he had one with carmelized onions. We also shared the hot wings as an appetizer and my man, who is from Buffalo and thus an expert on wings, said they were some of the best he's had in Vancouver. All I know is that they were hot enough to make my lips tingle the rest of the night.

Love that I could get a gluten-free beer with my dinner. First beer I'd had in ages and it was delightful, let me tell you.

It's a tiny spot, but they have a really cute section upstairs with couches and a great view down on to the rest of the bar.

I'd come back all the time if it weren't so far away!

I was really looking forward to trying the pizza at perch. I can't do dairy so I'm always on the look out for pizza without regular cheese. Like a previous reviewer, I had bought a groupon. I went into redeem on the last day when the groupon was valid, and they had apparently run out of pizza crust, wings and the tofu nuggets.

It was a mistake buying a groupon for this place. That's just really poor planning.

I can't comment on the food, but the decor was not what I was expecting. It looked like a student house - It was not impressive and the staff was not friendly. I stood around for a while before anyone asked if I could be helped. I had to go out of my way to find a server and ask about ordering.

It's too bad I didn't get to try the food, but I will not be returning.

Love The Perch, been here a few times just to have their gluten free, vegan pizzas. All pizzas have a gluten free crust and the vegan cheese (Daiya) is optional but available for all the pizzas if desired (no extra charge).

Pizzas, $11 each or $19 for 2: Thin and crispy gluten free crust topped with lots of cheese. Although I'm lactose intolerant and the daiya cheese is better for me - I like the regular cheese better. Lots of options including vegetarian, steak with mushrooms/peppers/caramelized onions, pulled pork, thai chicken, etc. My favorite is the margarita pizza (v. good, a little light on the basil but it's usually like that anywhere you go - I just love basil). Good portions, about 10-11". Comes out hot!

All their meals have gluten free or vegan options. Their breakfast/brunch menu looks fantastic but I haven't had the opportunity to give it a try.

Tofu Nuggets with peanut sauce, $8 (~10 pieces): I was skeptical at first because I don't like tofu but it was actually quite tasty. The peanut sauce wasn't drippy, but dried onto the nuggets and had some spice. They were shaped like dog biscuits which I thought was unappetizing at first but it was surprising good and we ate the whole thing.

The restaurant is small and casual. The main floor has seating for about 18 - it's bright and airy and faces Powell St. The windows are also big glass sliding doors so it can be a little nosy. Seating upstairs is nice (~20 ppl) but very it warm with poor air circulation (mostly, I think because the kitchen/pizza oven is right below). Also some seating outside on the patio. NOTE: It's close to a processing plant so can sometimes smell a little fishy outside. However, the smells inside make you hungry.

Service is friendly. It's very casual and relaxed. A great place off the beaten track to enjoy a casual meal with a wide variety of dietary preferences: meat, vegetarian, gluten free, vegan, lactose intolerant, etc.

Prices: Very reasonable and includes HST!

There's something so comfortable about the mismatch cushions and the old school decor. There's a table top arcade machine downstairs for your entertainment that we took full advantage of after our dinner.

This little restaurant is located... well, in the middle of no where. I don't see any other cafes around and there only seem to be warehouses. A great find thanks to my friend who decided to have his birthday here.

We sat upstairs, which was just big enough to accommodate our party of 14 people. It was cozy, a little too hot, but allowed us to be as loud as we wanted.

I tried the pulled pork sandwich, which was a little too sweet for my liking, but the meat was perfectly cooked with the right amount of sauce. The brie, spinach and portebello mushroom pizza was delicious. I could barely put it down and it was the perfect compliment to my beer. The pizza wasn't too heavy, but left me extremely satisfied.

If I'm in the area again, I wouldn't mind dropping in again.

I recently went here again, with an out of town friend, for a mid week lunch ~wanting to treat her to a funky East Van eatery, something out of the norm for her.
We had a cool, counter high table by the door, and it was curiously empty for a thursday 1 pm dining time.
We got menus, and drink orders after a few minutes, noting the music was overly loud and raucous for a thursday lunch. And, I usually like loud, and raucous, but not during a mid week lunch break. My friend ordered the burger, with daily soup, and I opted for the omelette brunch.
Disappointed, since being the only table seated in the place at the time (aside from a guy having coffee at the bar) we had to wait HALF AN HOUR for our meals!?! For an omelette, and a burger?????
I should have eaten something before leaving home, and was wanting to chew the skin off my arms by the time our meals arrived.
My friends burger, she commented was excellent, as was the soup. My omelette and home fries were good, though slightly over cooked.
Want to try some of the gluten free selections, but will be prepared for the painfully S-L-O-W speed of the kitchen.
My friend was impressed with the decor, art work, and enjoyed the visit, though so I was glad I had chosen The Perch.
Curious to see future art displays on the walls....

Went with some friends for vegan gluten free food (yes this is a type of cuisine too lol)

Save yourself from a salt attack and do not order the nachos.  It just about killed me at the end of the night.

Two of us got the 1/2 nachos with daiya and hummus.   Wow I am glad we ordered the half to share.  They are big.  And SUPER salty.  The hummus underneath had giant whole cloves of garlic. Like in addition to the mass of garlic already blended in it. It seemed like they were just getting crazy with throwing in more garlic.  It was this super salty garlicky hummus.  We got tired of it fast and when it's at the bottom after eating a ton of daiya cheese you're like oh lord... I cannot take any more of this. It's not like any hummus I've ever had before and I love hummus...

Ordered the yam and arugala pizza and artichoke sun dried tomato pizza.  They were all right.  The arugala was nice and added some flavour.  But I think we were daiya cheesed out! The artichoke sun dried tomato pizza was unremarkable.  Lame that they can "veganize" all the pizzas but then there's basically nothing left on them, and the veg ones they do have are uninspiring and not very flavourful.

Perhaps the worst of the night was the gluten free crust as it was pretty dense and chewy and when it got cold turned rock hard.  I've definitely had way better gluten free crust before.  Usually made with a mix of rice and tapioca flour.  This one was kind of dark hard like thick cracker? Spelt maybe... I don't know. But it's like eating thick cardboard.

I don't think I'd be back for pizza.  Maybe for something else vegan though.  The food sounds interesting, but I think the recipes can use a lot of tweaking.

Finally checked this place out after riding/zipping past for well over a year. It's at the bottom of Commercial Dr at Powell, off the beaten path.

First the decor/ambiance: it's very casual, like eating at the home of a multi-roomated loft, housed by 4 or 5 art-school roomies. Loud Mexican-Mariachi music blasted the joint throughout our stay. I was thankful for the strong odour of good cookin' as there is a 'food' processing plant nearby which from time to time, permeates the outdoor airspace with a 'foul' stench.

The food: we had an order of the tofu "nuggets". These are well seasoned bone-shaped tofu appetizers meant to simulate wings. A very tasty alternative if chicken wings ain't your thang. Go for the spicy Thai.

We also had two personal sized pizzas which were ample for two people. I went for the steak + cheese with caramelized onion. Meh. I think the cheese brings this one down a notch. It's the cheap marbled kind. My guess is it would do better with a stronger white cheese, like goat or aged cheddar.
My husband had the spinach and mushroom, it was delicious.

The service: super friendly and comfortably attentive.

All in all it's great for a quick, casual un-fussed meal in a quiet part of town.

    Belly bliss!
Pulled pork and onion pizza on gf crust with Daiya vegan cheese.
Yes, you read that right. Pulled pork on pizza, and It was so satisfying. I'm stuffed like I haven't felt in such a long time and it's a good feeling. The Perch is like a vegan & Celiac's Oasis, with gluten free beer and even a gluten free desert! I didn't have any room for it, but there's always a next time.

It's such a cute little bar and there's a side patio, too.

    Winter 2012 update:
Not terribly pleased with the punk/metal music we heard the last couple of visits, totally in conducive to conversations but it won't stop me from returning for the gluten free 'zza!

I came here for lunch the other day, because I had heard that they had a lot of gluten-free options.  Turns out almost the entire menu is gluten-free, or can be modified to be!  This is thrilling for someone like me who has to eat GF.  I had a PULLED PORK PIZZA!  It was so delicious, and was more than enough for lunch.  My friend ordered the apple and guinness sandwich with tomato soup, and loved it as well.  Service was good and the atmosphere was really mellow.  It's not in my neighbourhood, but I'll definitely make a point of heading back when I can.   Go eat here!

This brand-new restaurant took over the old unsuccessful Hell cafe spot at The Arc, the live/work studio building at Powell and Commercial. Situated between the port, the highway, and the chicken abattoir, this little place is a haven of funky decor and delicious food. The only other food offering in the area is JJ Bean, and it suffers from having to support an entire neighbourhood of artists and musicians.

The Perch has a menu filled with sandwiches, nachos, and pizzas like you've never tasted before. Their pizza crust is gluten-free and they offer dairy and non-dairy cheese. Try the rosemary and grape pizza - seriously - it's incredible in a way that you'd never expect.

I do wish the pizza crust was a bit fluffier but I know this is hard with gluten-free baking. I really appreciate that they offer gluten-free, though. Even though I'm not gluten-free myself, I am a vegan so I understand diet limitations and how frustrating they can be.

They also offer espresso and drip coffee, beer, and wine. I'm not sure whether they have WiFi but I think they probably should, since JJ Bean down the road doesn't - there needs to be a good place to work for the residents in the area.

Edited to add: they DO have WiFi!

We ate here for breakfast during our vacation and came away highly unimpressed. First off, the floors were filthy. Now I understand that this place is meant to be more hipster, but that doesn't constitute having a dirty restaurant. As far as the food, it was pretty mediocre. I had the vegan tofu scramble and thought it was bland and that they overused Daiya cheese (in every vegan item). The tofu scramble consisted of tofu, spinach, potatoes, and onions covered with a thick layer of Daiya cheese - I really thought it was missing a lot of flavor and that it was too oily. My bf's meal was actually terrible and they even forgot a few of the ingredients. If I lived here I probably would never come back again. (I give The Perch a 2 and my bf gives it a 1)

One of my readers suggested I try out the pizza here.
Boy, am I glad I did! All of their pizzas are gluten free...with such original combinations such as bacon, apple and nacho cheese, or carmelized onion, portobello mushrooms, and spinach. I'm all about variety on a menu, especially when your choices are limited in the gluten free world, but when I'm trying out a place for the first time, I want to choose a basic pizza. Just so I'm not comparing apples to oranges. So, today I decided to go for the basil, tomato, mozzarella pizza drizzled with balsalmic vinegar. I wanted to taste what I've been missing since a trip to Italy years ago, the famous margherita pizza. Simple, but tasty. This pizza was it! Great fresh flavours that complemented each other perfectly. The balsamic vinegar was a nice touch. The crust was thin, but with thick taste, which was perfect for me. Not too doughy, but not a cracker either. My friend chose the portobello pizza and was pleased as well. Great taste and for $11 my friend and I each had our fill, with leftovers, and didn't feel like we were taken to the gluten free cleaners. Bravo Perch! Dare I say the best gfree pizza in Vancouver?
On Powell and Commercial in an unusual area. Try them out! I know that bacon pizza is calling my name!

I went there with my Groupon which included 2 pizzas and wings. My friend had been there before I liked it quite a bit. I definitely enjoyed their small selection on tap which was by R&B Brewery. We got the Thai peanut sauce wings, which were quite saucy which is to say kinda peanut buttery in the texture. And I liked them with that bit of kick. My friend thought they were ok. Next were our pizzas and I have to agree with some previous reviews about the gluten-free baking style that it doesn't lend itself to the crust you'd expect. The pizzas were ok when fresh.  But I took the leftovers home, which usually works great for pizza, unfortunately this was not the case. Given so many positive reviews which I partially agree with, I'd go there again for the atmosphere, drinks and other appetizers.

I had such high hopes for this place, I really did. Gluten-free, vegan, and in an awesome location? Done! Unfortunately, this place just doesn't cut it. The service was sub-par. We ordered two items, and one didn't even come, yet we still were charged for it when the bill came out. After we pointed out the error, our server had no excuse other than he was kind of out of it that day. He removed the item from the bill, but failed to give us $2 off for our pizza despite it being $2 off pizza day, and offered no consolation for his omission. Everyone who was working there appeared to be preoccupied with their friends who were dining there. Would not recommend or go back.

The food was pretty good but the service was sooo bad.  The girl didn't greet us as we came in.  There was only one other table of people in the restaurant so they weren't busy at all.  She was snotty and rude to my friends who didn't know much about Vegan dishes.  When one of my friends asked if their was eggs in something she responded with "It's Vegan" in such a snobby way.   I was so surprised that they would give such bad service to first time customers who are checking out a joint.  When we went to pay she was busy talking about how they had scored big on that large table and pretended as if we weren't even there.  Like asking one of her coworkers "How much did we make?"  right in front of us.  It was so strange.  Considering how busy the place was, (not busy at all) you'd think they'd want to be polite to the customers they do have.  She didn't even say you're welcome when we said thank you for stuff.  It's so strange because that's just common courtesy.  Although the food was somewhat good I probably won't go again.
