I miss you, friendly Pepper Pot lady. You used to sell me lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves for Thai curry, you taught me that all coconut milk is not created equal, and you stopped me from a potential disaster involving substituting Indian curry paste for Thai. All with gentle good humour. Yes, not only did you sell me everything needed for proper Asian cooking from sweet chili sauce to dried shiitake to any kind of tofu I might need, you did, and continue to do it all with grace and the benefit of your obvious vast knowledge of ingredients.
Not to mention that the prices are great. As in small. Any plans to open more stores? Seriously, there's a Pepper Pot empire just waiting to happen. -

Pepper Pot is a shop at Lonsdale Quay that has a lot to offer despite it's small size. A couple of months ago, my wife was on a mission to find pandan extract for a Malaysian dessert she wanted to make. She checked a bunch of small Asian stores and also scoured Granville Island Market looking for this stuff. South China Seas Trading Company had frozen pandan so that's what she ended up buying. Not only did Pepper Pot have the frozen stuff, but they even had the pandan extract! Next we have a hard time finding some sort of herb, seasoning, or spice, I know just were to go!

What is it about a well stocked wall full of spices that make me so extremely happy? I really enjoy this place, and it is in a convenient location to pick up a few ingredients to complete your grocery shopping at the quay market. Everything is packaged all cutesy. Think of all the combinations and possibilities!

Say you were looking for some unusual spice, more than just the usual oregano and basil...perhaps you need some lime leaves or zataar, then you'd better come to Pepper Pot to find what you need. What this store does best is stock spices and condiments that are more interesting than the run of the mill fare that you might find at your grocery store. And much of the spices are sold in bulk, so you can get as much or as little as you need. Hurray for not having your spices sit around in your cupboard getting old after you use that one teaspoon of something or other that you needed for your one attempt at being Julia Child!
