The Chronicle Herald's food columnist, Bill Spurr, recently hailed Pepper Jack's for having the best wings in town. I've got a penchant for chicken wings, so when my boyfriend suggested we check out a neighbourhood pub (we just bought a house in Fairview!), I steered us towards Pepper Jack's Sports Bar & Grill.

So how was it? The word "Meh..." pretty much sums it up.

Service: We'd unknowingly walked in on wing night, so the place was hopping. The servers were busy running around, but they were still very attentive and got our drinks and order right away.

Our food came quickly, but we got the wrong wing sauce. We let our server know, and she was quick to correct it. All and all, the service experience was good.

Food: The chicken wings failed to live up to the hype. The menu promised plump wings cooked to perfection, but the ones we received were measly and bland.

We ordered the prosciutto wrapped jalapeno poppers, and (while tasty) they were way too greasy. I had to blot each popper with a napkin to get rid of the excess grease. The food was pretty subpar on all accounts.

Drinks: It's a sports pub, so I didn't expect an extensive cocktail list, but I was surprised that they didn't even have a drinks menu. Sure, I can drink draft with the best of 'em, but sometimes I like something a little different.

In Sum: I always like to give restaurants a second chance, and Fairview doesn't have many pubs to choose from, so I suspect we'll visit Pepper Jack's again.

It's a great spot to grab a beer and watch the game, but don't expect anything special from the kitchen.

My partner and I stopped in Pepper Jack's Sports Bar & Grill yesterday for a quick brunch. We only were aware of it's existance because my man had once visited Pepper Jack's for a solo lunch while in the area, and found that their pizza was pretty decent. I had a feeling it was going to be classic cheap pub brunch. I was right.

The interior is your typical dingy, dark sports pub but there's something kind of approachable about it. Once you're in, you feel cozy, and like it's a friendly neighbourhood pub...which is actually their slogan. Hm.

Brunch prices were incredibly cheap. I ordered a Western (minus the ham) and homefries, which was only $4.95. I am pretty sure they actually took a dollar off since I omitted the ham action. Nice. The homefries were made from real, fresh cut potatoes, but I found them a little too large as the middle was very starchy. Not too greasy and obviously from scratch, though, instead of being bought frozen, so kudos for that. The western had green peppers put in to substitute the ham, which I didn't ask for but was a nice surprise. It was your typical homestyle brunch.

My brunch date had pizza, again. He claims the dough is nice and crunchy on the outside, gooey on the inside. They have several beers on tap, and he had Clancy's. I also noticed they have Sam Adams on tap... which I don't think many pubs in HRM do.

Our server was very friendly and prompt. I think he was tending the bar as well as the two tables that were occupied. He seemed easy to talk to and very casual in an approachable way; he seemed like he fit in there. I could see this place being fun on their Thursday wing nights if it was busier, or to watch sports on the big screen they have in the centre of the room. Definitely watering hole material, and cheap, homemade eats. If you live in Clayon Park or Rockingham Ridge this would be an extremely easy place to become a regular.

Visited on a Friday for lunch, place wasn't busy. I was having lunch with my brother who had the Nachos and I  had Quesadillas. The service was good as it should have been with only four tables occupied. Menu is typical pub stuff nothing to get excited over. Sign out front says Saturday and Sunday brunch, must check that out. Oh! The Quesadillas and Nachos were good... hhhhmmm Brunch.. I love to eat......
