I have a love/hate relationship with the Peasant Cookery. I love that everything is made in house: the butter, the bread, the meat on the Charcuterie platter. Even if something is not made in house they can tell you where it came from. Though a warning: we were served pig face on a Charcuterie platter once so if you are not terribly adventurous you can ask that they keep that item off.
The first time I went there we had our now favorite waiter and everything was perfect: the food, the service, the drinks & his masterful pouring abilities. It was fantastic! The next time we went there we had the same waiter and once again EVERYTHING was perfect! The first time I went I had the Profiteroles but didn't like the pastry when I told the waiter that he brought me out a bowl of ice-cream with the amazing chocolate sauce. It isn't on menu but they do that upon request.
Now on our third trip we went with several of our friends and we had a waiter who was also waiting on the bar. We were pretty much ignored. The food was mediocre; my friend who ordered the Tourtiere was not informed they make it sweet and not traditional, my husband and his equally large friend were not told what they ordered was a small portion, and our water was never refilled. It was an amazingly disappointing experience.
We have been back a few times since then and the service has never been as bad as that third trip but we have found that if our favorite waiter isn't waiting on us then the service is good but not amazing. The food is wonderful on a good day and I recommend this restaurant to everyone for dinner!
For anyone with kids: there is no changing table in the bathroom there is only a bit of space in between the sinks. There is also on 1 high chair, if your child needs one call ahead a reserve it or you might not be able to use it. -

This review is for the lounge side. Gods bar tenders. Avg. mixology... Which is good for our city.

Ended up here as part of a lunch meeting, I had the soup and a salad that day, the other 10 people at the table had the whole gamut of the menu. Over all the food was OK, the server was trying there best during the lunch rush. The taste was there the portion size was a little small for the price. Most people in the group enjoyed their meal, one of us had to reorder as they ran out of one item, but it took some time to come out and tell him that after the orders went in.
I am stuck here on what I think of the place has some good ideas, and items, I am not sure about the execution but then again I went in with a high expectation based on word of mouth(sorry did not read yelp this time) and sometimes that is not fare on my part.
From reading DineoutGal review it could be a issue with a good idea with no focus, the head chef is part of a chain, and its not his restaurant.
Over all It is a place I am going to try again at least once, likely for dinner. -

I went back to Peasant recently for a lunch and dinner to see if the place has redeemed itself from the not so great meal I had when they first opened almost a year ago. First off, I'll start off with the negatives and move into the good stuff. The lunch service on a weekday was painfully slow despite a barely half full dining room. The slow lunch service isn't a one time thing as many of my colleagues who have gone there for lunch on different occasions agree to that statement as well.
The poutine is still as delicious as I remember - super crispy fries, good gravy and squeaky cheese curds. I ordered the burger ($8.99) which is made up of short rib, brisket, and chuck mix and served on a brioche bun with no sides. Fries or salad are not included on the sandwich plates unless you add on $3. I've had the burger before when it was Oui and I can't say it has changed much except this time it tasted more greasy and less flavourful than I remember. I guess the brioche bun doesn't help as it's such a rich tasting bread. I didn't enjoy this particular burger so I wouldn't order this again. My friend didn't seem to enjoy the ham and swiss sandwich ($7.99) as he said it was a little too heavy and greasy. I'm sure the poutine didn't help prior to our main meal but the sandwiches weren't a hit with us.
Then I came back for dinner and had the best service and a very delicious meal. So it was literally a night and day experience comparing dinner vs lunch. We had the sweetest server ever who was very knowledgeable about the cocktails and food. I have to say that Peasant has one of the more unique cocktail list so kudos to their mixologist/bartender for that. I loved the mixed drinks there especially the one with champagne mixed in and they were all priced very reasonably at $8 a glass. The bread baskets have always been outstanding here - freshly baked with fresh whipped butter. I really enjoyed the half roast chicken dish ($19.99) - it is a steal at this price. The chicken is cooked sous vide and then roasted to give the skin some flavour and colour. The chicken was very moist and was accompanied with the most ridiculously rich herb butter that I loved though I felt so guilty for eating all that fatty goodness! The dish came with some veggies which were okay but nothing extraordinary - cauliflower, greens and potatoes.
Suggestions for Peasant - you need to update your online menu on your website as it looked like the same old menu I saw last year and wasn't reflective of the one I read this past month. And you need to improve the service time at the lunch rush. There's a lot of business lunches done in the Exchange area restaurants so you need to adjust to the crowd because not everyone can sit around for a two hour lunch meal.
Notwithstanding, the improvements required for this place to be even better, I think they've redeemed themselves since my first dining experience with them last year. The dinner food and service is excellent but lunch needs some improvements.Listed in: The best in the Exchange, Favourite Dinner Spots

We had French onion soup, Beef and rice soup, House salad, Beet salad and Florentine Quiche. The onion soup and the complimentary bread were good. Quality lettuce in the house salad. Beyond that everything was mediocre. The "roasted beets" were pickled beets that gave no indication of having been roasted.Besides the three small slices of beets the beet salad consisted of a small amounts of spinach and goat cheese. 50 cents of ingredients tossed in a plate for $11.99. I am very skeptical of the claim on the menu that "everything that is served from may to bacon is made on the premises. There are many restaurants nearby that offer fresher well prepared food at better value
