Review from Nancy W.
With so many bubble tea and Taiwanese restaurants in Richmond, how do you go about finding a true winner? Which one(s) particularly stands out and steals your heart? For me it is the creaminess of the milk teas, the chewy and slightly sweetened pearls, and refreshing taste of fresh smoothies...
Pearl Castle is one of the few BBT joints that won Diner's Choice Award for "The Best Taiwanese Cafe & Bubble Tea" at the HSBC Chinese Restaurant Awards. Aside from bubbles, they also offer a wide selection of hot food, meal combos, signature hot pots and delicious Taiwanese snacks. This place is always packed at any given time of the day. Sometimes you may even find yourself waiting in line.
They are located inside Continental Plaza where, Yuu Japanese Tapas, Gyo-O, Deer Garden and Sing Yee Chinese Restaurant. They also have an location inside Richmond Centre, which is also always busy. If you want a quicker option, their express store is located inside Parker Place in the food court. Sadly to say, the Port Coquitlam has since closed over a year being replaced by a Thai restaurant.
Taiwanese Meat Sauce on Rice
A comfort and homey dish made of grounded pork. There wasn't much sauce here and at times a bit dry. Ground pork is more diced than grounded. If only they can add more sauce it would've been a much tastier meal.
Tomato Beef Brisket Hot Pot
A generous and heart warming meal filled with beef brisket and tomatoes. The broth is flavourful and is great on rice. The hot pot combo also came with 3 sides of veggies, tofu and marinated potatoes. Grass jelly is served as dessert.
Pearl Castle is a very popular place to gather with friends and wind down the night / start off the weekend. It is opened till very late and offers a hang out places when your favourite restaurants starts closing doors or a place of late night snack and desserts. Either way I'm sure Pearl Castle at one point in time your default go to venues! -

You know this place is a winner when they upgrade their restaurant hours sign from the cheap plastic type to the kind you stick numbers onto. Baller.
One dish that I will be ordering again for sure is the Taiwanese sausage fried rice. This one is one of the better deals in terms of value, and the sausage is quite tasty. That's what she said.
The seafood udon here is also quite good, if you want to mix things up. The waitress recommended this one over the pork option.Listed in: 2011 Cheap & Tasty

Vancouver, BC
My first time trying this place and will return to try again.
The food was delicious and great portion for the price. The place is cash only but I guess given it was Asian I shouldn't have been surprised. There's a TD Bank ATM across the parking lot.
The reason this place got a 3 star in my books and not a 4 was because of the service. Not to say the waitress wasn't friendly or anything, they just was not on the ball whatsoever.
Sat down for 10 min, menu all closed and nobody came over to take our order. We had to wave at one of the girls. Maybe that's just the way Chinese restaurants are? Not sure, but I didn't like it.
Then the food all came out at weird times. My boyfriend got his bubble tea first, then about 5 min later his food came. I sat for another 5-8 min before my food came... still no drinks in sight. I'm about half way through my food and my drink came. I had ordered the hot Coffee/Tea with bubbles. The drink was WAY too hot and there was no bubbles. Mind you, after the drink cooled it was quite delicious.
At no point during the meal did anyone check-in to see if we were OK with the food or if there was anything else we wanted.
After we ate everything we literally sat for half an hour and no one came to clear the table or give us the bill. Funny enough when we stood up to leave the girl at the door was saying "bye" until I mentioned that I haven't paid yet. They seemed totally surprised by that fact.
To sum up:
- Good ambiance
- Good food
- Good prices
- Don't expect good service
- More than OK for a casual eat/drink experience. -

* Solid Taiwanese cafe *
Ok, I have to preface this by saying I didn't try any of the bubble teas, and I see from other reviews that those are hit or miss. I was just there for a quick lunch, and enjoyed it quite a bit.
I had the "salt and pepper shrimp ball" lunch combo ($8.50). I had never seen that on a Taiwanese menu before so figured I would give it a go. I don't know what I was picturing - but I thought something along the lines of a classic shrimp ball in the classic Taiwanese fried coating. I pictured wrong. Here is the full combo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
It was actually not shrimp balls at all, just nicely fried shrimp! (And a LOT of them). They were fried with green onions, garlic and chili. Skillful hand on the frying as they were fully cooked yet still tender - just the way I like them. The chili added a nice kick and made for a flavourful rice topping. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
The side dishes included sauteed greens (nicely garlic flavoured), a clear noodle with fermented bean paste and a touch of sesame oil (nicely balanced), and some lettuce with dressing (could have done without this part). Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
The rice was cooked nicely, and uneventful. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
There was also a complimentary dessert which was a coffee jelly with condensed milk. Very refreshing and palate cleansing. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
This made for a very nice and good value lunch, with very friendly service. I would certainly return!Listed in: Something fishy (hopefully…, Vancouver Taiwanese Food

I usually only order drinks from here.
However, I saw other people order food here like stirred fried noodle. It smelled good. I will try it next time.
This time, I ordered the "dragon eye" and dates hot tea. It was very tasty and great for a cold rainy day in BC. The sweet is just right and not too superficial. -

Hit or miss. Some drinks (such as the pudding milk tea with half sugar) are DELICIOUS. while others are WAYYY too sweet.... For example... the pudding milk slush made me sugar-high for hours.
And what angered me is when i asked the waitress, "are there pudding bits in the slush?"... and she said "YES OF COURSE"... and then there indeed is pudding in the slush... BUT THEY WERE BLENDED IN THE SLUSH!!! -

Pearl Castle deserves four stars because the atmosphere is bumpin' until 1am every night. The portions are of great value, and the drink menu is impressive. The venue is lovely, and clean, so very cute and asian. They even tie little bows in your takeout order aw!
The waitresses can be awkward... they always serve me cutlery... true story.
It's cold now... time for some pot stickers to stick to me belly. Later. -

Typical Taiwanese BBTea Cafe, This one ranks 4 star!
They have a wide variety of food you can select: Noodles, Rice, Hotpot, and small sides. All of them really yummy.
Wide variety of bubble tea as well, and the pearls are cooked nicely that its soft all around and slightly sweet.
Recommendations: New to BBTEA Cafes? And dare to be adventorous? Try the Milk Hot Pot! Its so delicious! Want something meaty? Try the Red Fermented Pork! Still hungry (I doubt you would be) Fried abolone mushroom! hehe Quantity is pretty generous.. so ideally you would share your meals, to try out all their selection.
For BBTEA.. If you want to try fruity.. I recommend something with Calpis
for Milky lovers: the Honey Green Milk Tea is always a win!
Environment is cute, wait staff.. could be better, and could learn a little bit more english.. but Hey.. its all part of the cultural experience.
CAUTION: Don't come here when you're on a diet! There is NOTHING healthy here.. except that glass of water, which probably will be contaminated by your contant drool dripping, cause you're looking at other people eat the delicious sodium filled foods!
TIP: You're in Richmond. Want to eat something besides MCD's? Bring Cash! -

I originally came here with my friend for just bubble tea. I love bubble tea so I will drive anywhere for the best bubble tea. The good is really good too. We were hungry on one of our bubble tea drives and decided to dine in and have some food. Pretty good food too. This place seems to be always busy. I love coming here as nobody speaks any English and if I close my eyes, I can pretend I'm in Asia for a brief vacation. Can't say that the service was great, but as with all Asian restaurants, I suppose it's normal for them.

Went here for a shaved ice. Haven't been to this location in a long time, and the shaved ice portions are definitely bigger than I remember it to be! It was still quite yummy though, the toppings were well made, and there was lots of ice.
I've been craving a lot of shaved ice this summer, and this was one of the better ones I've had. The only topping that was sub par was their pudding. If you're a big fan of pudding, I'd definitely recommend the caramel pudding shaved ice from Leisure (refer to my Leisure review). If I'm not craving the caramel pudding, then I would prefer the shaved ice here at Pearl Castle.
Didn't have any salty foods, so can't comment on that at the moment. -

I am addicted to this place.
I love the:
Atmosphere - creative and cool decor
Drinks - sweet just like I like em (hot apple milk tea my fave)
Meal Presentation -Everything is just so nicely put together on funky dishes and with some you even get a cute little dessert!
Favourites: Fried Abalone Mushrooms- you have to know mushrooms and I are not good friends, but this might save our rocky relationship! I also love their coconut seafood curry dish- man sooo good!
I admit that your experience can really weigh on your service, and 8 times out of ten I've had great service. Oh, there's a TD bank just around the corner of the complex cause this bizness is cash only!
Another plus- free parking! I know you Richmonders are used to this, but compared to DT Van it's a such a nice thing! -
Review from Duke C.
Lots of people recommended Pearl Castle as THE spot in Vancouver the get milk tea.
As soon as I walked in, it immediately me reminds me of Tea Station in LA, with dine-in service, even though the decor is way better. Menu's pretty extenisve, with drinks, tea, and smoothies as well as Taiwanese snacks and food. Since I had to board a plane back to LA, we ended up getting drinks to go.
I went for my usual of oolong milk tea with boba (bubbles as everybody else calls it), and was really surprised by the nice aroma of the oolong tea here. It's robust and it reminded me more of "baked tea leaves" rather than oolong. I ordered half sugar as well so that's probably another reason why I could taste the tea much more.
The boba was really disappointing though. It's too soft and felt like it sat in a pot for too long. It was also bland and not sweet enough. Definitely disappointed.
Had a chance to try a bit of my friends' flavored green tea and they're all pretty good. Again, order half sweet or else it'll be sugar overload if you can't handle sweets that well. Oh and for their yogurt black/green tea, they make it with Calpis rather than Yakult so don't ordering and be expecting Taiwanese yogurt drink with your tea.
Food smelled amazing but sadly didn't get a chance to try but overall not a bad place to hangout with friends!Listed in: a rainy weekend in vancouver

Came here last night after some rock climbing (I say that because it makes me sound cooler) and it hit the spot... pretty much.
I ordered a Taro smoothie with pearls, and it was wayyy too sweet and had a grainy texture. Perhaps it was made with fresh taro and I can be ok with that if that's the case, but the amount of sugar they put in their BBT is unreal.
Next up: we ordered crispy mushrooms and fried oysters. Both were super tasty, actually! Now, I can't speak for the quality of the oysters, but for $7 for about 10 fried little nuggets I can't complain. The mushrooms were such a hit, too... it was a first that I'd order again. Great as share food.
Ty's Kung Pao (sp?) chicken was ok. I wouldn't order it again, if I were him, but having a set meal on a plate with a bowl of rice, bowl of stir fried chicken and a mini dessert (gelatin in a small plastic peel-back container) seemed to make him happy. Will I be back? Probably. The atmosphere makes for a fun place to go with a group. The place is colourful, bright and clean with a tad of funky. The service: not too bad!Listed in: Eats in the city that sleeps!

This is one of the good BBT cafe located in heart of Richmond. They have huge variates of BBT The pearl milk tea was so good. I found their BBT quite sweet than before, but it still nice.
Food just ok and just simple and quick. -
Review from Dru C.
I really enjoyed this place, for a quick hang out for food. It is a great casual place to just grab a bite and hang with friends. The best thing about this restaurant is that they have "special house" drinks. Each drink has a different flavour and a theme to them, which makes them extremely special. I actually like trying new things, so their drinks really cater to that if you a re a person who wants new things.
I love this restaurant for their special set hot pots. You will receive a nice single hot pot in front of you and it is still burning and boiling while you eat. They serve small Taiwanese side dishes that compliment the hot pot and it goes great with a nice special house drink on the side.
Their fried food are spectacular for just simple junk food. The chicken nuggets are very crispy and the golden brown fried oysters are delicious. Their food variety is great, and this gives a lot of choice for their customers.
The atmosphere of the place is lovely. I enjoy hanging out with friends at an all Asian place, for bubble tea and small snacks. It is a great place to just sit and chat and catch up with old friends! The interior design is unique but at the same time very confusing with their style. I have no idea what theme they were going for at first, but the white is really appealing and it seems very relaxing.
This place the sweetest bubble teas ever. It could be the amount of sugar they put into their drinks but if you have a sugar tooth which needs to be satisfied, this place is the best for you then! The service here is like most places, but they are very attentive with their customers. They always know when customers are asking for attention.
To wrap it up, this place is a great place for just hanging out, grabbing a quick bite, drink some ultra sweet bubble tea, or just not wanting to stay home!Listed in: Post Dinner Sweets, Bubble Tea~~!!!

A modern bubble tea spot attached to Richmond Centre. As expected of Richmond, asians were representin'. It was decently busy tonight around 9:30pm. Good spot to sit and chat with a friend.
Tangerine lemon green tea with dried plums, and coconut jelly ($5)
Fruitful, but too sweet. I recommend asking for all their drinks, half sweetened.
Other notes: $4.50 minimum spent per person that comes in. There is a full lunch/dinner menu. -

It's been less than a month since I was here last, and uhmmm tonight was a special night. Celebrating the purchase of the Subaru and feeling better from the last few days of a nasty cold/hyperglycemia Diabetic fits.
So tonight was soup, no carbs and a bit of veggies. Two warm glasses of water and then accross from me, I see an angel. 4 tables away.
What? Angels at Pearl Castle? If you haven't been here before, yes, it's true.
What could have been god's creative perfection to man was dining here at this very same restaurant. Something must be good here. It wasn't me, that's for sure.
So of all the places that I had chosen to dine, it was here tonight, and althought it may have seemed like afluke, it couldn't have been. Gods way of torturing me I guess.
Now asides from all of those distractions? What was it that we decided here to dine on?
It was the cost. It's affordable and the food is reasonable and there is alot of choices to choose from if you like Taiwanese style Asian food.
The only problem was, it's hard to order just a regular coffee. Everything has to have sugar in the dirnk. Why?
Special note for the sliced fish szechuan hot pot. It's pretty good.Listed in: Asian Noodle Spots in Richmond, Taiwanese Food, Where to go after a Yelp…, Bubble Tea Economy - happiness…

Lots of things to choose from - meals, snacks, desserts, drinks. Open late night - 2am on the weekends, 1am all other days. This feels like Taiwan, especially when they first greeted us with "huan ying guang ling". Overall, food was not the best I've had, but pretty good, and more decently priced than some other places I've been to.

A list of 10 things wrong with naming this place Pearl Castle...
1) You can't call it a castle and have no moat.
2) There were no court jesters to amuse me.
3) No one was wearing a crown.
4) I was expecting to be greeted with the sound of trumpets.
5) No stables, nor horses.
6) No damsels in distress. I brought my broad sword for nothing!
7) The drinks aren't served in goblets nor chalices.
8) There was no one around named Merlin. I asked.
9) I really wanted to cross a drawbridge.
10) I might have missed it, but I didn't see any Knights of the Round Table. They may have had the day off though. -

At Pearl Castle Cafe, try the mango slush. I'm a fan of all things mango, and they do a really great job with this. It is a little pricier than what you can find elsewhere. Expect to spend five to six bucks per beverage.
For those wanting to order something more outrageous than a mango slush, perhaps try the Little Lover or other risque-named items!
This is a place I usually get my drink to go. It's a full service restaurant, but I've never stayed to sample the food. -
Review from Tim L.
Pearl Castle is one of those places you probably want to avoid if you're having an affair. Everyone and their (insert cliche related person/pet here) come here and you're probably bound to eventually bump into someone you know.
It's a popular place for a reason. It's got very decent seating for a bubble tea joint and as a result is always busy at night. They offer a small but solid selection of food that goes well with the bubble tea and the service is somewhat identifiable as "service" when it comes to a bubble tea shop.
Of course you can always do take out as well if you don't want to deal with the crowd. They do have their off days though when sometimes the drink is just flavored totally weird. Generally though they're pretty consistent.
They open late hours and have a large parking lot at their disposal if you go late evening as most of the other businesses in the plaza have closed.
It's also one of the few late night haunts that kids under 18 can hang out at so be prepared for overhearing silly over-dramatic stories. Which depending on your personality is either an annoyance or a source of entertainment. -
Review from Alison S.
Where are all the fancy bbt houses in California??? I can't find them :( Maybe I am looking in the wrong places?
So of course Pearl Castle is always one of the places I love to hit up. I tend to eat a lot with my drink here; the food is kind of addictive!!!
Recommended: fried chicken nuggets, fried calamari squid. They must use some special seasoning on it because I throw those things back like jelly beans. Drinks are pretty tasty too...the specials are not super cheap but they all taste unique and have some pretty funny names.
Service is admittedly off-and-on. Not awful enough to keep me from going back. I usually am not there for a hurried outing anyway...more time to talk and chat, I don't have any problem with that.Listed in: Vancouver Spots

Bubble tea is quite alright and it's open until 1AM. Service could be better. The only reason why I wrote this is to deliver words of caution.
Do not, repeat, DO NOT pay the extra $1 to upgrade to the 'large' size - which is a short and squat brandy bowl that looks smaller by volume to the standard size. Add another $0.50 for pearls and you be sitting there wondering what you paid $6 for. If regret could be sipped through a oversized, neon straw, it would be something like this.
You have been warned. -

I came here with my orchestra friends during our orchestra trip. We stopped by this mall to get food and shop. My other friends got Mcdonald's and food from the food court. I wasn't very hungry, and just wanted something drink.
It's rare that I get really good bubble tea back in Washington. Thankfully, because Vancouver= Hong Kouver, the Asian food is much better and more authentic.
I decided to get traditional bubble tea. My other friends got taro bubble tea and mocha bubble tea.
My bubble tea was SO GOOD! The tea was perfectly sweet with a nice milk flavor, and the bubbles had a great chew. Not too soft, not too hard. AWESOME!
This place is actually a restaurant, which also serves bubble tea. I didn't eat anything here, but it smelled wonderful.
I'll be back for a meal! -

We came to Pearl Castle on a Sunday night around 8pm. This place was exremely hot. Maybe due to the amount of guys that are packed into this place. seems very popular place for the dudes.
I don't seem to remember the service too well, but it wasn't all that bad. Everyone seemed very friendly. Since we had a big meal already before coming here I didn't get a chance to try out some of the food. However I did try the Lychee frappe, and to be honest it was really good, and I'm from a Los angeles, the Boba mecca of the world. next to taiwan.
overall great selection of food and drinks. -

How can you not give 5 stars to a place that calls its drinks "Blue Baby," "White Lover," "Little Lover," "Passionate Love," "Adam's Dream"...etc??
Imagine telling the waitress, "Hi, I'd like to order a Little Lover please?"
Actually, my experience was similar. I said, "Blue baby?" It was awkward. My whole table was giggling.
Apparently everyone in my group ordered a different colored drink and we were able to create a rainbow with our drinks.
We also had yummy fried appetizers too...
The ambiance is awesome. My Vancouver native friend says a lot of other boba places are trying to model themselves after this place. It's a great place to hang out, I'm surprised it's not reviewed yet since it's SOOO popular. We had to wait quite a long time before we got seated. These people need to put in some reviews. Get on Yelp, peoples! -

This used to be my go-to place for lunch and supper. Cravings of bubble tea and usually followed by cravings for bubble tea food aka Taiwanese food.
Nothing culinarily exciting (is that even a word???) but it hits the spot just the same. This place is usually busy, even on a week day lunch time. So prepare to wait and be surrounded by kids. Nevertheless, the food is good and so is the bubble tea. None of that powdered, fake watermelon flavours.
I love the set menus and set lunches. You can never go wrong with those and of course, all-time Taiwanese snack classics: fried chicken nuggets, fried oysters, fried fish cake & taiwanese sausages that make your mouth reek of garlic for the rest of the day. YUM.
I miss this place. If only there was one in NYC... -

The best grass jelly that I can find. Have the right texture and bounciness. They have the option of hot grass jelly too.
Their drinks quality is pretty consistent.

We usually get to go, which is pretty efficient. You can phone to pre order if you want to be super efficient. -

This place can get pretty expensive. But there are a few dishes I like.
First, I LOVE THE ALMOND TOAST HERE! It's very soft and hot. I've only had it once so I hope when I go back it will be the same. (I'll let you know)
I also like the Barley Milk Tea and the Black Sesame tea with boba! The shave ice here is not very good and expensive. I've had better Korean shave iced at other places.
I think they make a lot of profits here because it doesn't take a lot to make the drinks and the apps, but they charged so much. -

Pro: near a decent grocery shop
Con: Waited 10 minutes at the door to be seated although it was 3:00 in the afternoon, and there were plenty of seats. After being seated for about 10 minutes, a server came by to drop off a menu. We waited about 20 minutes before getting up to ask a group of gossiping servers to take our order. One girl begrudginly came by a few minutes later, and then never came back. Another 30 minutes go by, and the two of us are left wondering why there's no food and no service. We asked a busser to check on our meals. She never came back.
70 minutes, no food. We left.
Conclusion: The service is non-exsistant, as is the food. -

SERVICE - QUADRUPLE NEGATIVE. Worst service I have ever received. My girlfriend and I were there last Friday for an afternoon snack and we literally sat @ our table for over 10 mins without service. So we decided to order our bubble tea to go and end up waiting for over 20 mins. Just when we were about to cancel our order, magically our bubble tea surfaces....freaking ridiculous!! Not to mention, why in the world would you hire freaking "cocky" servers who doesn't even know how to SMILE!!!!!!!

Nice fun casual place to grab a tasty bite at a reasonable price! Many dishes come in sets with main, side and dessert for less than $10. There is an extensive menu of teas, bubbles and not, and also SHAVED ICE. Ok, i'm a big fan of shaved ice so maybe i'm a little excited about this place. It does get busy tho at times so be prepared for a short lineup. Things to try: chicken nuggets, beef brisket hot pot and shaved ice.

I came here once a very long time ago and there were always line ups. I have come more frequently now because I just discovered one of their hot pot meals (miso seafood with pork slices) and it is my favourite now! The portion is huge so I always have to take home what I can't finish and it will fill me for another meal. The drinks are not bad (depends on the day) but I love that they have the option for a large because I need the large. I like the strawberry and passion fruit green tea. My hubby liked the pork chop and hop pot style beef with green onion. The service is ok and the only reason they get 3 not 4 stars is because I had to wait 40 mins for my food when everyone around me who were seated much later than me got their food. When I asked why it took so long they only apologized and offered nothing more. I am pretty sure they just forgot to take the order because the next time I went and ordered the very same dish, it only took max 15 mins to come. I think they could at least admit that the order was not taken and offer some discount. At least there was an apology.

Ordered seafood ramen, udon, and chicken thighs and rice. Take out took ~40 min. The ramen noodles were ok, the seafood was gross. The chicken was horrible. The quality of the food was very disappointing.
