Delicious food for a decently great price too! This is "considered" to be one of the most famous place for Shanghai food because it was show on TV?

Anyways, the place is not that bad though, for sure. I enjoyed the flavour of the food, and I wish there was more as we are sharing in large groups. I will be coming back with me and my friend to actually sit down and chat and have a great time with food.

Green Jalapeno Herb Salad- The whole dish is green. BE WARNED!! It is filled with jalapenos. Very well cut jalapenos, long cut, and every bite you could taste the citrus style from the jalapenos. The watercress was a perfect addition to the dish as it gave it a very night herbal smell.

Pickled Spicy Cucumbers- A dish full of chillis covered in pickled cucumbers. It may seem scary to actually eat, because of the spicy red chilli sauce that is dowsed over the plate, but the pickled cucumbers are delicious. It's not pickles though, because the cucumbers are actually soft, not crunchy. But it was a perfect dish though.

XLB- Delicious, only thing I have to criticizes is that they did not offer us spoons to keep the nice juicy soup.

Dan Dan Noodles with peanut sauce- Wayy too much peanut sauce ratio with the noodles. It's either too much sauce or not enough sauce. Learning to keep a perfect ratio with the dishes are hard but an important skill. There was literally a bowl of sauce left at the end on the bottom.

Stir Fried Pork with Blade Sheared Noodles- Yummy. I enjoyed the noodles a lot. These are my favourite style of noodles as they are perfectly cut and they have the perfect texture to them! YUMMY!! The stir fried pork was not really my cup of tea though. Don't like the heavy amount of excess oil that was dripping off of the vegetables... It was delicious though, but very heavy in flavor.

Chili-Garlic Eggplant- We ordered another dish, it was the egg plant and it was delicious. The same style of frying, but it was surprising the oil was not seen. The flavor was delicious as I do enjoy garlic, but after the meet, wasn't as much as I planned... :P

The night was extremely fun and thanks to AMY for organizing the UYE!! YAY! Exciting night with delicious food!! :D

All is peaceful at the Peaceful Restaurant.

If you live in the downtown core and you're craving Chinese food that'll tickle your taste buds while satisfying your Asian craving, Peaceful Restaurant is a decent option. Conveniently located within walking distances of several apartments and the glamourous Granville entertainment/night-life district, Peaceful Restaurant serves up decently priced Szechuan-style eats.

My friend and I both ordered dan-dan noodles (one of my favourite optionally spicy dishes served with peanut sauce). I've tried these noodles from several places and it's either a hit or miss. This place, unfortunately, is a miss. I don't know if it's the way made the dish or if they ran out of certain ingredients that night, but I tasted absolutely no peanut sauce - and that's what makes this dish unique.

I intend to return and hopefully this place will impress me on my next visit. Meanwhile, stay 'Peaceful', Restaurant.

    Where's the shrimp?
We ordered hot and sour and there was no shrimp to be found even though, on the menu it is listed as being one of the ingredients in the soup. Lucky for them, this is not a deal breaker for me.

Other than that, everything was quite tasty. Finally ordered the beef roll and they were quite good. We also got their house noodle and loved assortment of meats and seafood.

The Restaurant is cozy downtown location in a older one story building. I found the seating area comfortable but when its full is its a very loud place to dine in.

Peaceful is known for their handmade Noodles but I would say that is a sneaky cover for their Outstanding Vegetables Dishes. The Cilantro Salad with chilies activated my taste buds. Then it was on to the Eggplant with light garlic sauce and let's not forget Szechuan beans.  I found the Noddle Dishes to also be tasty and flavorful

I would say the pricing for quality of food you get is a great value for you money when dining here. I would say that bicycle parking around this location. I found a secure rack across the street from the Restaurant at the Scotia Dance Centre entrance

Still 4 stars, but new dishes to recommend after I attended a UYE here.

xiao-long bao steamed buns -- great.
dan-dan noodles -- the best i've ever had.
mu-shu stir fried pork with blade sheared noodles -- SO yum!!
spicy herb salad -- very refreshing, has a nice kick to it.
northern curry chicken -- nice, but lackluster as a curry, didn't have any spice to it. i liked the flavors, still.
    chili-garlic eggplant -- great.

still love the beef roll, too.

This place is horrible, they used pork instead of beef.  I am chinese and have eaten chinese food all my life. I ordered spicy beef in broth, which is a very typical dish. The meat tasted like PORK, i had enough pork in my life to know that it's pork. Then I passed that to my husband, who's white and he also said  that's pork, (he eats BBQ pork bun a lot).  I really didn't feel like eating pork that day, so I told the waitress it's actually pork, not beef.  I could hear the kitchen staffs strongly denied "we don't have sliced pork in the kitchen (which is a lie)', and ' she doesn't want to eat it, that's why she's saying that'.  I can understand chinese, and I just thought it was so rude. The waitress then tried it, and told me with a smile "I can confirmed that it's 100% beef!" . WTF right! So I am the idiot here?  Anyways, she did offer me to change my dish, but after all this I don't know what the kitchen staff will do to my food, so I kept the dish.
The dish itself is nothing special, it's not really spicy, or numbing, and of course it was not even beef! It was also extremely salty. We also ordered the lamb dumplings, also very salty.
That was the third and last time we'll go there. Just remember, they used cheap pork to replace beef. I don't know what other things they might do the food.

An excellent meal to start off the New Year!

I had the soup noodles with some veg and tofu, while the man-friend had won ton soup and we split some ginger beef.  The ginger beef was the low point.  While I really loved the texture, the flavour just wasn't there.  The soup noodles, however, with the thick and chewy texture, were amazing.  I loved this dish to bits, and was so glad there was enough for me to take for my lunch the next day.  Won ton soup was also great, with a nice broth.

The service was pleasant, though not super attentive, but we got everything we needed, so that was fine.  I loved the window where you could see into the kitchen and watch the noodles and dumplings get filled fresh.

I am very interested in coming back and trying more dishes.  Especially that spicy eggplant dish!

I wonder if it feels strange, working in a glassed in kitchen as two starry eyed patrons look on in awe as you hand drag noodles, fill little xiao long bao dumplings and chop veggie after veggie. Would it be stranger still if those two people were not only staring starry eyed but had huge grins on their faces (and a bit of drool) as they watched their meal being made? Yup, deliciously weird.

I broke a deal for Peaceful tonight: No eating out until our Asian vacation that starts next week. But it was worth it. The menu has so many enticing sounding dishes, and after much debate -- Sichuan stir fry or northern curry -- we ended up ordering cumin beef noodles, spicy eggplant and dumplings to go. They. All. Rocked. Period. Spicy, just enough to not kick my wimpy-spice-sensors into overdrive, and deliciously garlicky, Peaceful continues to knock it out of the park for me.

The staff might not be smilers, but they're friendly just the same. And take it from me, if you like to watch, sidle up to the stools right inside the door, and be dazzled. Hand pulled noodles people, get some!

    Cash and debit only.

It is HARD to find a decent Chinese resto in the area if you don't want to venture over to Chinatown.  And if there is one....prepare yourself for possible disappointment.  Well...not so much at Peaceful!  It's about 3 blocks away from me so if I'm craving some dumplings or a noodle soup dish...this is where I'll head off to.

Now...the resto is pretty small and can get packed during lunch hour so either come here a little earlier or a little later or you'll have to wait.  Service is average but it isn't terrible although I can find them a bit pushy to order.  Whatever though..not a huge deal.

They have lunch specials on the back of the menu for under $10 but personally don't think the choices really showcase what Peaceful is about.  From what I gathered it's more Northern style cuisine..but the lunch specials are super plain jane. Beef and broccoli, kung pao chicken...come on now!  No little dragon buns? No beef noodles?  No chive dumpling pockets?  Not that those items are super expensive anyways..but they could defniitely showcase the more famous items.

Anyhow, like some people said..some of their items are a bit oily.  Especially their fried noodles.  However, it can be overlooked.  Plus, I love how they freshly string their noodles on the daily!  Yum!

I'd recommend their #6 beef noodles, shanghai fried noodles, and their little dragon buns (xlb).

Food is ok but I didn't care for the restaurant space.  We were seated at one of those tables squeezed into an odd corner next to a door.  The table literally was pressed against the door which I assumed was locked.  It wasn't.  Instead, every time the main door was opened it caused the door against our table to push open ... knocking against our table.  A constant stream of people in and out of the restaurant made for a really annoying dining experience.

Good was good but nothing stellar.  I like the W. Broadway location better.  Food here seemed really greasy.

We liked the noodles here so much that we came two nights in a row. The first night, my DH had chicken chow mein, and I had Szechuan beef noodle soup.  Both were excellent.  Nothing like spicy noodle soup after walking around in hail.  I also like that you have an option of blade-cut noodles, or hand-pulled noodles.  Both are very good and very different from each other.  The second night, the DH had the same thing (he doesn't deviate from what he likes), and I tried the chicken noodle soup.  This was also quite good and satisfying.  I love this kind of Chinese food (Shanghainese/ Northern Chinese), and I hope to have some of their other traditional dishes like dumplings and onion flatbread soon.  Service is good and kid-friendly.

I wanted to like this place so bad that I waited 3 crappy meals before I posted a review in the hopes that the next time would be better. I feel like I'm being sort of blasphemous in a way, as Peaceful is such a Vancouver institution, but this place disappointed me BIG time, on three separate occasions. At least they're consistent???

My first visit was shortly after they opened and I was having a major dumpling craving. I ordered the Mandarin Wonton Soup and split an order of the pan-fried Vegetable Dumplings with a co-worker. I understood that the soup was supposed to be a "light broth", but that's an understatement...it was basically hot water. The dumplings - both in the soup and pan-fried on the side - were wrapped in such a thick, gummy dough that I eventually unwrapped them and simply ate the filling. I know this is Mandarin-style, whereas I'm used to Cantonese dumplings, but still...not good. So I said to myself, "Hey self, try the noodles next time!", so...

My second visit I ordered the Black Bean Sauce Beef lunch special and paid an extra dollar for the hand-pulled noodles. I knew from reading Yelp reviews that the lunch specials also come with soup; and when I showed up to pick up my order I saw a sign on the counter saying the same thing - great! Well, when I got my order back to my desk, no soup...perhaps this is only served to customers who eat in, but I have to say that this is one of my biggest pet peeves - either it comes with soup or it doesn't, shouldn't matter where you sit to eat it! Now, the noodles themselves were very, very good - perfect consistency. The rest of it was a big "meh" - the veggies and meat were decent, but the sauce was very typical and cornstarchy, it did nothing for me. It was definitely my best meal of the three I had, so...that's not saying much.

On my last visit yesterday, I ordered the Fried Tofu and Seasonal Vegetable lunch special (I'm a fried-tofu freak) and an order of the Chive Pockets. Once again, no soup (grr!!) but the portions were large enough anyway that I expected to eat half and save the rest for lunch the next day. The fried tofu and veggie dish was a big disappointment - the tofu was really soggy and had clearly not been recently fried (another huge pet peeve of mine, if you're going to call it fried it better be freshly done!) and there wasn't enough sauce to wiggle down into the noodles to loosen them up as the black bean sauce did; so basically, it was a big hard pile of tightly pack noodles that broke off in 1 - 2 inch strands. I was better off eating it with a knife and fork.

The Chive Pockets were another big disappointment - I think the name needs to change to Grease Pockets. It was the kind of grease that permeated everything, it coated my tongue and continued to ooze out of my fingertips long after I washed with soap and water. And although these pockets are supposed to contain shrimp along with chives, egg and vermicelli, there was DEFINITELY no shrimp. After eating half a pocket and not finding any, I ripped open the remaining pocket and did a thorough inspection - NONE. I felt ripped off, on top of feeling kind of sick and greasy.

I know people will likely disagree with me, but I can't help but feel that Peaceful is pulling the wool over its customers' eyes...needless to say, I'm done with eating here!

I stopped in this small, bright restaurant on a cold night when I wanted hot food, and was not disappointed. They poured me hot tea as soon as I sat down, and quickly brought me a small mountain of Sichuan fried noodles. I ordered the hand-pulled noodles, vegetarian. They were served with green onions, red and green peppers, green beans, cabbage, some tofu, and plenty of oily, fiery chili sauce. They weren't subtle, but they were good. I also had a hot green onion pancake -- but it was really more than I could eat.

My only slight complaint is that the food was a bit oily, but that really was down to my selection. Soup next time, and there will be a next time.

They even took my US cash, which was just as well, because they do not accept credit cards.

One word: YUM. Came here for lunch, and noticed that one of my old sushi haunts had been replaced! While I mourn the loss of $4 soft shell crab, I'm more than pleased with the new option of Shanghai / Northern Chinese food close by!

We showed up at noon, but the place got pretty busy just before 1. We ordered the beef rolls, which was delicious but a little cold on one side of the pancake. Next up was the spicy eggplant, which is fantastic, and seriously spicy. So. Good. And lastly, we had the stewed lamb soup noodles, which was amazing. Great flavour and a good broth with tender pieces of lamb. I was in heaven. Overall, it came out to $30, which is more than I wanted to spend, but we took home the entire eggplant dish for a second meal.

Notes: they only accept cash / debit, and the lunch specials are only good for weekdays. This was a bit of a surprise to me since it wasn't noted on their website anywhere, so you've been warned!

Easily accessible one block away from any transit options that hit Granville & Davie. Or really, it's downtown, so it's walkable from Granville station or Yaletown station.

Walking down Granville St., I spotted huge pictures of dumplings down the street and the pictures led me to Peaceful, a Northern Chinese cuisine specialist. The menu includes noodle soup with hand pulled or knife cut (thicker, chewier) noodles, dumplings, pancakes, buns, etc.

    * Lan Zhou beef noodle soup ($7.95): not a beefy broth but light and nice, with lots of big pieces of sliced marinated five spice beef, thick & chewy long knife cut noodles, wood ear mushrooms, bean sprouts, silver noodles, spinach. It is unusual that the broth wasn't beefy, they didn't use stewed beef cubes, and they added silver noodles, but it was still a huge, hearty, delicious bowl of noodle soup. The beef was too thick and chewy and also on the bland side.
    * Peaceful beef rolls ($6.95): slices of five spice beef, sweet hoisin sauce, rolled in a thin panfried pancake, thought it tasted too much like Peking duck, hoisin sauce was too sweet, pancake okay

The restaurant looks new, clean and contemporary, with white dove shapes on the ceiling. Service was attentive.

    Cash only.

Finally, a legitimate Chinese noodle place in the Yaletown area!  They aren't as great as Sha-Lin Noodle House, but there are better than Legendary Noodle House.

Their Pork Chop Noodle and Szechuan Spicy Beef Noodle are the best ways to go.  The broth and goodies for both these items are yummy in the tummy goodness that can't be beat, especially on a crappy rainy day.

Get the Pork Chop Noodle with the dragging (long) handmade noodles and get the Spicy Beef Noodle with the cutting (chubby) handmade noodles and I promise you will leave a happy, happy person.

Other things to note - if in a real bind for juicy dumpling cravings but can't get to Lin's on Granville, then the dumplings here are good enough to keep you sane.  The service is very nice too, the servers are very sweet and they go out of their way to make sure you are enjoying your meal.

My friends and I visited Peaceful for some lunch. We were craving noodles and xiao long bao dumplings and were not disappointed. We ordered the tan-tan noodles in soup, beef noodles in soup, beef wrap roll, hot & sour soup, and dumplings for four people.

The xiao long bao, although not the best I've had, was enjoyable. The meat was tender and there was enough flavourful juice. Same with the beef wrap roll, which is usually a bubble tea place staple. The wrap was crispy and there was plenty of beef. However, it was a tad oiler than I usually prefer.

Onto the noodles! We ordered the hand-pulled noodles to go with the tan-tan. Instead of having the noodles simmer in the tan-tan sauce/broth, we asked the restaurant to separate it for us. Reason is, the last time we were here, the soup was extremely salty and oily. By having it in two bowls, we were able to choose how much sauce/soup we wanted. It was definitely the right choice! The chewiness of the noodles was the star.

The Szechuan beef noodle in soup was my favourite here. Made with five spice beef and a lighter (but dark coloured) broth, we choose the cut noodles to go with this one. So good! I love the texture and chewiness of the hand cut noodles too. This dish didn't feel heavy at all and had enough spice and heat.

The hot and sour soup was indeed hot and spicy! One of the best I've had, and I'm not usually a fan.

All in all, a good place for some decent Northern Chinese/Shanghainese food. Note, most of us felt super thirsty after leaving the place!

What a neat little place! The menu is a good size and there are a lot of vegetarian options and dishes that they can make vegetarian for you. Two friends and I were here on Friday for dinner and I've decided that Peaceful Restaurant is now on my list for next time I need an Eggplant fix. That spicy Eggplant dish was delicious!

We also ordered the crispy tofu with mixed veggies stir fry and some lovely green beans that were covered in an impressive amount of garlic.

The rice here is purple. I was pretty happy about it. I asked what makes it purple but I didn't really catch what they said. Either way, purple rice is good rice.

I'll be back for sure! I need to eat all of their Spicy Eggplant!!! Yum! I'd love to try more of their menu as well, it all looked so tasty!

I was in eggplant heaven! After reading Crystal H's review of the spicy eggplant dish, I knew it was a must try for me. I dragged the BF down there, and since he is a noodle-head I didn't think it would be difficult. The place is brand spanking new, and I don't think many people know its there yet, so there was a lot of empty seats, but I don't think that will last too long.

The BF ordered the curry noodles with tofu, which reminded me of the Shai-Lin Noodle House (R.I.P) which used to be on West Broadway until they had a fire. I had the spicy eggplant dish (obviously) and it was probably my favourite thing in the entire world besides my dog. We also had some vegetable pan-fried dim-sum, which was okay, but I thin kit just needed a better sauce for dipping, cuz the stuff that came with it made them taste pretty bland.

The cost was a little high, but the place is in the midts of downtown and the gaybourhood, so I'm sure the rent ain't cheap.

Overall the food was pretty good. I loved the peaceful potato roll, Chinese gnocchi, and the garlic string beans.  The chilli-garlic eggplant was REALLY spicy.  A little too spicy for me.

All in all it was a good night, we enjoyed most of the food.  It was a tad salty, but not as salty as some other places.

I think I would go back here when in the area.

I tried their dan dan noodles. It was pretty good. I'll bet their pulled noodles are even better. Nice choice for Chinese in an area that otherwise looked dry of real Asian foods.

    * Second location - still working out the kinks *

Peaceful Restaurant (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) has expanded.  They now have a downtown location right on Davie Street.  How exciting!

The menu is almost identical, with some familiar faces in the kitchen.

I think they are still working out the kinks of their recent opening as things weren't quite up to the same standard as the original location.  But I think they will get there pretty darned soon (I hope!).

I tried two of my favourites:

    - Shan-xi noodle soup.  This features their hand pulled noodles, which had just the same nice chew they do at the original location.  Photo of noodles (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...).  Great!  The soup itself was slightly oilier than at the original location, and didn't have as many garlic sprouts in it.  But overall it was very close to the original.  3.75 stars  Photo of soup:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

    - Cumin beef flatbread.  This fell a bit flat compared to the original location.  The meat was cut much thinner and was not as juicy.  There was not as much of a noticeable cumin flavour (there was some, just not as much), and the bread itself was a bit oilier than normal while being slightly less fluffy.  I'm hoping they work out the kinks on this one, as it is one of my favourite things to order at the original location.  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

Here's hope they get up and running at the same quality soon - I'll give them 4 stars as rounding up from about a 3.5 to adjust for opening jitters.  Hopefully that isn't too optimistic!

This place makes their noodles in house! How cool is that?!
Their service was good, the restaurant was tastefully decorated, and the service was prompt.

The biggest highlight was their steamed buns, and home made noodles

I am so happy this place opened so close to my home.  The hand dragged noodles are the perfect chewiness.  Great flavor, generous portions...I've been here 5 times since March, which is a lot for me.  I'd probably go even more if I weren't trying to eat at home more often.  One improvement that I felt they could make, is not blasting the heater that is directly under the bench seats (I burnt my legs once).  Otherwise, it's a clean Chinese restaurant, which is more of a pleasant surprise than a standard.

The Dan-Dan noodles are my favorite.  If you like spicey, there's a lot of delicious flavorful dishes.  I really enjoy the Sichuan String Beans, which are crispy, not soggy, and just a bit of a bite.  The "Xiao-Long Bao" Steamed Buns are hit and miss though, sometimes with the perfect consistency, temperature and juiciness, and other times not so much.  The chive pockets are very popular, and with good reason as well: lots of filling, crispy outside, and steaming hot.  I discovered they don't taste very good the next day, and neither to the Dan-Dan noodles, so I suggest finishing those at the restaurant.

There are so many other dishes that I enjoy here as well, and am looking forward to trying the others that I have yet to experience.

Went there this weekend with a friend.

Saw it opened and was very curious.  Didn't know they had another store on W Broadway.

Anyways, place is big and clean.  Chairs reused from old resto that was there.  The place was a bit chilly!  Guys, need insulation on the windows, and delivery man should CLOSE the door at the back after using.

Proceeded to order, some "xiu long bao", "wor tip" and the sichuan beef noodle soup with the thick noodles.

The bao aka soup filled dumplings were hot on arrival in the steam basket.  The pastry was a bit thick, but there was the standard hot gooey soup inside.  Not as much as other places but acceptable.  Wor tip was good.  Noodle soup, sub-par.  Being sichuan it should be spicier.  Portions for this were a bit small.  My friend and I didn't feel that full with these 3 things shared.

Wait staff was attentive, but still green.  Took our orders and delivered food promptly.  Also attentively filled up our teas.

Prices at the end were a bit more than what I'm used to for this compared to say on the other side of the bridge or in richmond. but decent.

    Would come back.

Best Chinese food I have ever had. Actually, it's not just Chinese food. It's in a league of it's own creation. Beef rolls I miss you! Peaceful, I would go to Vancouver just to eat there. Top five, for sure.

Just had lunch at this place. Tried the highly recommended cumin beef in sesame flat bread. Wasn't impressed. The beef was too dry and bland. It totally needs more flavor. Also tried the beef roll, which was rated the best dish in the Northern & Shanghainese Dim Sum category by the 2011 HSBC Chinese Restaurant Rewards. This dish is a must try! Also ordered the Sichuan Stir-fried Noodles. The whole dish is lack of flavor and very average. The only dish I would go back to have is the beef roll.

The restaurant is very clean and service is pretty good, which is unusual for a casual Chinese restaurant.

My husband and I had dinner at Peaceful while vacationing in Vancouver
last week. I had read all the great reviews on Yelp and we decided to give it a try. What a wonderful meal we had! The hand-made noodles were so good. We also had a tasty veggie dish, fried rice and veggie filled buns.
Everything was very fresh and delicious. The waitress was attentive
and very friendly. We will definitely return next time we are in town!

Since the demise of Hons' vegetarian Dim Sum, there hasn't been a viable alternative in the city ... until now.

Peaceful Restaurant has a number of vegetarian options and I'm pleased to report they are mostly not greasy (with the exception of the onion pancakes which I would avoid if you're not a fan of oily food).

It's also nice to have a Mandarin Dim Sum instead of the more common Cantonese version.

The potato rolls and vegetable buns were excellent.  For those who eat fish, the shrimp and chive pockets were particularly memorable.

The décor is "fast foodish", but the prices are very low when you consider the portion sizes.  I found that two people could eat a big lunch with just 4 items.

They have hand pulled and knife cut noodles! a must try and a nice addition to the neighbourhood (which had too many Japanese restaurants anyway)

The food was fantastic but the wait staff was a bit overwhelmed. Even when our party of 7 was the only group in the restaurant she was confused by any non-standard order.

Order exactly what is on the menu and you won't be sorry.

Really good chinese food - especially if you are looking for something spicy in downtown! The restaurant fills up pretty fast though...so you gotta be quite lucky to get a table right away!
