A place that welcome pets is awesome. Especially in Toronto where you practically cannot really take your pets anywhere aside from a pet store ... in PawsWay, you can let them walk around/join a play group or even go into a coffee shop!
I wish there is a more pet friendly businesses in Toronto, but PawsWay for sure is a good start. Thanks so much for the Corporate Sponsor: Purina!
Tips: If you don't like dogs, don't go in! As the place does smell like dogs and they do barks and make noises... And don't even bother visiting Williams Coffee Pubs, go to Starbucks or somewhere else... let the dogs and owners enjoy their little piece of heaven! -

Today I went to a Pugalug event at this joint. (I know, I just unleashed a whole lot of crazy on you.) That's right, I own a pug, he owns some clothes, and I took him to an event that was all pugs. (He did not wear clothes.)
This building is great for the people who live down in condo country and want their dogs to get some exercise and socialize with other dogs, for there isn't a park for miles. I even like that there is a cafe inside with a full lunch menu that allows you to eat with your dog. I like that they sell dog things. I like most of it.
But to be honest, people who bring their dogs to events inside scare me a bit. So it's great socially for George (@pugnamedgeorge - we tweet as him when we're drunk, deal with it), but I spent most of my time trying to avoid socializing.
Nice fact: If you go to a Pugalug event you pay a bit to get in but they donate it all to their pug rescue facilities, and most of the money goes towards vet bills. I like that. -

I'm kind of mad at myself for only checking this place out as winter is on its way out! I had heard of Pawsway, but never figured there would be much point...but with the recent days of rain, I knew that my poor pup needed some release from being cooped up indoors.
We went on Sunday at 4 pm for the off leash small breed time slot. We were expecting something of a hockey arena-type space, so to find the off leash space was a bit of a disappointment. It was kinda small. The mix of dogs was great though...not one poorly behaved pup in the bunch. Even the people seemed ok. Not too tense, or over protective, and generally were REALLY good at cleaning up after their dogs.
Its a neat place to go learn about dogs and cats, as well as grab a snack or drink if you are downtown with your pet. They also have neat classes for people and pets, such as dancing and agility. The cost to come for the off leash was only 4 bucks, and it was a deal to have 2 hours of fun play. I would probably only ever come here in the winter or in bad weather.Listed in: Spoil dat Canine!, Dog Parks Yo!

I walked into this place not really knowing what to expect other than dogs are allowed inside. I was pleasantly surprised by the cafe, mini shop for pets, and other recreational areas that you can just wander around and check out. I was thinking to myself, 'why don't we have any place like this back at home?'. If I had brought my dog on vacation with me to Toronto, this is probably a must stop. It's cute, it's fun, but I'm curious to know how they stay open for business??? I didn't see too many people inside when I went. Staff is very nice!

Frankly, I'm not sure if this place will survive without continued sponsor support. I know indoor pet-friendly places are necessary in the city, but this community centre/museum/play area feels like an excessively overfunded venture, especially when it's not really attracting many visitors and taking up valuable property on Harbourfront.
I love pets -- don't get me wrong. In fact, I was genuinely excited to visit this place on opening day. The exhibits about dogs and cats are quite informative, and I love that pet owners can come and congregate indoors. However, the place has been empty every time I've passed by, and given the opening hours, I don't know how often people will actually come by with their animals, aside from weekends.
Right now it feels like a display at the Ex: impermanent with some sort of ulterior motive that I have yet to decipher. This overall lack of excitement and personality makes me think it could've been executed much better on a smaller scale, maybe closer to where more people and their dogs actually live.Listed in: Free and cheap hangouts in…

I'm sort of torn about this place. I really want to love it. The free agility is great exercise for my dog, especially in the winter when he won't hang out outside (5 stars for that), and the staff is really friendly (5 stars for their personalities).
But the staff completely fails to enforce rules. The so-called "small breed" offleash is a misnomer. Once there was a rambunctious lab puppy that kept jumping on my dog (he's a dachshund and had a back problem, so this can't happen, which is why I bring him to small breed off leash instead of taking him to the dog park). When I complained, the staff told me that they also let in small dogs. A 30ish pound lab isn't a small breed or a small dog (when I asked the manager he said that 20 pounds was "small", but in any event, their calendar says small breed not small dog). This has happened to me on a number of occasions, and every time the staff member says "they are here now, we can't really ask them to leave, but we will tell them to come to the large breed off leash in the future". So I pay $4 and then have to leave. Also, I don't feed my dog people food because it doesn't come out the other end very pleasantly. Various people use things like cheese during agility and get crumbs everywhere, which my dog snaps up. Again, I mentioned this to the staff and they won't really do anything about it. -

Well, I have to admit that upon entering this building, I was expecting a lot more.
I guess its a great venue for small pet shows and presentations, but if you go in on an off-day, its painfully quiet. About 3/4 of the place is an educational center/museum - partition walls covered in pet pictures and fun facts about cats and dogs. It resembles what an exhibit in the Science Centre looks like. It is fun for new owners though. I have to admit, when I first got my kittens I went back and almost looked at it in a new light. I was previously only familiar with dogs, so it was nice to see interesting cat facts, information about their body language, etc. It's nothing I wouldn't find in a basic book about cats, but the larger than life, cute kitten and puppy pictures kind of made it extra awesome.
I also showed up (without knowing) when there was an international cat convention of sorts. There is a little hall in the back of the building for things such as this. People were proudly going up to the mic and talking about their show-winning cats. I couldn't really relate, as my cats were strays, but you could tell those people were totally into it. It was kind of cool. There was also a booth set up with sparkling, bedazzled cat jewellery - which my friend informed me that I couldn,t buy, unless I wanted to lose friends. She's good like that.
There is a very tiny gift shop, of sorts. A few toys and books, but mostly gifts geared towards pet owners. Some unique stuff, its worth a look. In my opinion, Paws Way is worth stopping by if you are already in the area. Its also great shelter when it starts raining at the Harbourfront. -

Pawsway is a wonderful addition to the neighbourhood and it is amazing how dogs know that this place is for them.
During the week programming includes large/small breed off leash play, agility, dog training classes, walking club and special speakers.
Weekends have breed specific meet ups and special events.
The monthly calendar can be found at http://pawsway.ca and the facility can also be rented for various events including doggie birthday parties. -

Pawsway hosts one of my favourite events ever....thepugoween! Tons of pugs running around like crazy and dressed in costumes too! A must for pug owners or lovers. And, even better, it raises money for pug rescue.

Connie T.'s probably right about the ability of PawsWay to survive without a lot of continued funding, but I sure appreciate the fact that such a spot exists NOW. I was probably missing my cats while on holiday and saw a listing in NOW magazine that a 'Meet the Collies' show was going on. Figuring I could pet some doggies, I hustled on over and met some great rough and smooth collies (didn't realize there was a distinction; our childhood dog was a rough collie, like Lassie). Also saw border collies and bearded collies, which resemble sheepdogs. Most of the dogs were Canadian or American champions from various dog shows, and they were calm and very pettable. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I went the following Saturday for their 'Meet the Sighthounds' show and met some Borzois, Irish wolfhounds, Ibizans, greyhounds, etc. If I lived in Toronto, I'd be here EVERY single weekend: Educational and fun and right on Lake Ontario.
