By far the best sub I've ever had. Yes, they are on the expensive side but you only live once and you owe it to yourself to try this place at least once. Subs are HUGE and tasty. Only quality and love go into the sandwiches here.
Forget Subway. Forget Mr. Sub. They are pretenders. Paul's sub shop is the real deal. You can thank me later. -

Could it be possible that I actually considered removing a star based on the fact that the submarine sandwiches were too big?! Anyway...
In the Lower Mainland, you've got very few sandwich shops that do it right and even fewer that can do a grilled sub to near perfection. There is only one place that I can recommend to friends and that is Paul's Sub Shop.
It's filling, it's a carnivores dream, and like any good grilled sandwich you've got to eat it before it gets soggy.
The service is full of love coming from one of the nicest ladies imaginable and it would be impossible to find fault in her caring ways. -

Warning! "Eating at Paul's everyday could lead to heart disease but at least you would have died with a greasy smile on your face."
Like I said the best grilled sub in town. I usually take out.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Lovingly made sandwiches and breakfasts from the nicest lady. She's usually single-handedly running the place herself, between cooking, bringing your food, and fetching tea, she does it all. And she calls everyone sweetie.
I'm usually only here to get breakfasts on the weekend. Breakfast here will leave you full all day. Massive amounts of grilled potato accompany your meal (if it comes with them) and the omelets are gigantic. I like the veggie breakfasts.
Is it cute and trendy? Nope. But it does have it's own charm. It's a comforting place to go, because you always know what to expect. -

Half a sandwich is probably enough to fill most people for lunch.
Chicken sandwich was ok, the chicken wasn't really seasoned so the pieces tasted a bit plain.
I would like to try the other sandwiches another time though. -

I used to live in the neighborhood near this place, but I seem to be going here much more often since I've moved away. A great place for lunch, but not exactly the most convenient spot for dinner.. limited hours, and closed on weekends.
As for the food.. I agree with most of my fellow yelpers that this is probably the best sandwich shop in Vancouver. It really reminds me of the place I used to go to in high school with my friends for lunch. Cash only, and everything... -

Fantastic, artery-hardening, fried meat sandwich shops are a dying race in Vancouver. Many times, I wish for an amazing philly cheesesteak shop like those you'll find in the major cities of the US. Bu they're just not for a health-conscious city like Vancouver, right?
When I get that hankering, there's Paul's Sub Shop - just a short drive from my place in Burnaby. Last weekend was one of many such hankerings.
Paul's Sub Shop was opened in 1971. Since then, it's been passed on to this great Ukrainian lady. Decor wise, it's probably the same as it was in 1971. You don't go to Paul's for the fancy table cloths or art work - you go there for amazing breakfasts and sandwiches.
Let's talk about the anatomy of a great fried meat sandwich: Lots of good juicy meat, a bit of rabbit food, gooey cheese, a great bun and appropriate sauces. Paul's subs delivers that well. You have to assume the Triple D Hunch to ensure the juices don't get all over your nice shirt.
The 6 sandwich (with some extra mustard added) it's plenty of food for an average appetite. Add a side of their fantastic onion rings (or mixed with fries - FRINGS!) and you're totally set.
Paul's is one of the few great fried meat sandwich places here in Vancouver. You owe it to yourself to get down there and try it out!

Best sub I've ever had. They grill the meat here which makes a huge difference. The sandwich itself comes thick with meat, melted cheese, grilled onion, lettuce, tomato on a fresh bun. Tried it once and I already decided to go there regularly.
Definitely go eat here. -

As with the previous review, we just sort of happened upon this place while looking for a memory of a Jamaica hole-in-the-wall - (RIP).
It's clear when you come through the door that these people are serious about what they do: well-stocked drink coolers; comprehensive menu board; well appointed grill as the focus of the place.
After going through the Olympics- including obligatory trips downtown and the consequent experience of indifferent, blase servers - it's amazing to be served by someone who actually seems to enjoy their job!
Their grilled subs are heavy on the meats - though they offer a single veggie item. They also offer an extensive all day breakfast menu.
We were hungry so went for a Steak/Capicollo Special and a Bacon Cheese Steak along with a side of Onion Rings in honour of our PM.
The subs were beautifully cooked and constructed; the rings delectable. They are definitely not a fast-food place - everything is nicely grilled and put together to make a very nice lunch experience.
Definitely worth the trip. I think I've found my replacement for Wallyburger! -

had the 17.99 "super" sub. basically same as the basic subs, but added mushrooms and something else that escapes my mind right now. i gave it a 5, though honestly, it's pretty hard to f-up a grilled meat sandwich. i like this place because you also have the option of brown bread. portions are on par w/ others. only thing i didn't like was the wait seemed longer than i would have liked.

a little old school lunch spot if ever i have known such a thing. happened to be in this part of burnaby just east of boundary road on imperial with some time on my hands at an hour of the day when food is on the mind. saw the sign as i drove by: "paul's sub shop - best subs in b.c. since 1971". almost missed it entirely, and obviously i had missed it a time or two previously over the years. decided to swing around the block and parked right out front. looked at the menu board, 10 or so grilled subs at $7.99 - $14.99 for 6 or 12 inches. a little pricey i thought, but the aromas were nice and the unfussy vibe in the place made me decide to take a shot. i ordered the bacon double cheese steak 6" and stood at the counter watching the older lady at the counter begin to prepare it. she slapped the bun face down and began to grill it, then the meat and peppers and the onions. all done on the same grill, not a microwave in sight. she layed the cheese over the grilled onions and allowed that little piece of magic to take it's natural course. she then carefully layed each ingredient on the bun, the onion-cheese melt right on top. she had previously determined that i was okay with mayo and mustard and so completed the preparation. no rush on her part, but no long wait either (though there were only 2 other people in the place at the time and she was simultaneously preparing another order along with mine). clearly she had done this before. i go on a bit because this place brought to mind the phrase "food of love". no pretense, just food. no phony forced enthusiasm, just a genuine spirit of sharing something good. i had never been here before but was treated as if i had, and as if it was hoped i would return. i will, and i will bring others with me. i'm sure those that live around the area are well aquainted with paul's sub shop, but i was not. leave your diet at the door and dig in ( the prices, by the way, not so bad, all things considered). they have cold subs and breakfast too, and i suppose somewhere down the line i will check some of this out as well. at this point, i write because i enjoyed the experience of finding this place as much as the food itself. lying half hidden amid a world of overpriced sandwich places staffed by people who are trained not to care very much, it stands out quietly for all the right reasons. seek it out.
