Review from Kameron M.
Middletown, NY
My wife and I ate here on Christmas day. It was probably the best gift we could have given each other. We ordered a few tapas and an empenada, all were delicious especially the empanada.
We enjoyed the fact that we could see into the kitchen, it looked like the head chef was training someone in on how to prepare the orders that were coming in. Very hands on.
The server was excellent at offering advice on both food and wine, I described what I was looking for in a wine and he introduced us to the Monastrell grape which we are still seeking out on cold nights.
The space is very small and intimate, and the service is not fast, but the space wouldn't really accommodate more than one server anyway. Definitely come here when you're not pressed for time, it's a great restaurant to take your time with a romantic dinner. -

Ironically, me and the significant other discovered Pata Negra by chance, after finding out that the vegan place where we wanted to eat did not serve dinner...apparently we are equal opportunity eaters!
We were pleasantly surprised by our find. The interior is very inviting. About 8 or so tables, some bigger than others, space for around 25-30 in total. The front windows open for what makes a great airy feel. There was only one waitress working dinner, but she held her own.
We ordered the tasting of 3 hams, the gambas (shrimp) and the Idizabal cheese. The waitress knew the menu really well. As she said, the lowest-priced ham on the list (Jamon Serrano) was good, but nothing special - it's your typical dry-cured ham. The most expensive ham (Pata Negra Acorn Fed Cured Ham) was delicious. It had a very mellow taste which helps you focus on the quality of the meat. The ham priced between the two (Jamon Iberico) was surprisingly good, just as good as the Pata Negra ham, if you ask me. It was different: a lot more flavors. The dish came with little toasts with fresh tomato puree on top, which were yummy, but we didn't want to dilute the taste of the ham (except the jamon serrano - we made sandwiches with those) so we passed on the bread for the most part.
Next were the gambas. Boy were they good, only 7 pieces though (my wife graciously gave me the fourth one). No need for bread here either, unless you want to mop up the inch-high olive oil + garlic in the plate - mmmmm. The gambas were meaty, fresh, and very well seasoned (the sea salt is a nice touch, though at times a little overwhelming).
We ended with the cheese. Very well priced - for five bucks you get a bunch of cheese slices, fig marmalade, granny smith apple slices, and some toast with raisins. A nice sweet end to our meal. -
Review from David N.
I don't normally go to tapas restaurants just because....because I don't want to spend an exorbitant about of money on tiny dishes, crazy prices on red wine with fruit in it and make sure I eat before. This was a special occasions and the little lady wanted tapas for her birthday dinner. How can you say no to a birthday request.
I've seen this restaurant before while waiting next door so we decided to give it a go. The smallish place was pleasant and our server was fun and started it right with a half pitcher of sangria (cha ching). I broke my second rule...eat something before ...we didn't...(cha ching). The selection of tapas here is more limited to others...mainly serving the Serrano ham, cheese heavy and some meats. I usually love the pulpo but that was not on the menu as was the croquetas, piquillos and patatas. The toasts were interesting which reminded me of the bruschetta, the few meat dishes...wagyu beef meatballs was very good, asparagus with garlic mayo, and gambas al ajillo all done very well(cha ching). The little lady was a happy camper with her birthday request dinner and now I can have my dessert at home. (cha ching!) -

Here is the woeful tale of my experience with Pata Negra:
To begin my story in the right context, please note that my friends and I decided to come here and reminisce about our very eventful trip to Spain. Now, based on my time in Madrid and Barcelona, I expected to spend a substantial amount of money to get a substantial amount of tapas (i.e. I know how tapas work - you eat a little of a lot).
Thus, we got to ordering all of our favorites. Morcilla? Chorizo? Jamon Iberico? Yes, please. But wait, where is the Patatas Bravas? The Callos? I was slightly suprised that an authentic tapas bar would not have these Spanish staples. Also, why can't the waitress pronounce any of the names of the dishes? Nonetheless, I ignored my suspicions and allowed dreams of fat roasted sausages and plump garlicky shrimp to dance in my head to the sound of my stomach gurgling.
However, when our food arrived, my worries sunk in like a lead anvil. The $10 morcilla and the $10 chorizo were no bigger than hot dogs (as in 2 hot dogs for 5 people). And the shrimp was comfortably snugged into a clay dish that was the size of the bottom of a mug. And as you can imagine, the other dishes (Pan con Tomate, Jamon Iberico, & Wagyu meatballs) were similarly tiny. To add insult to injury, the tiny portions of food were not even that delicious. The meatballs were especially dry and the Jamon Iberico was sweaty and limp.
Here comes the saddest part of my tale: when I left the restaurant after paying my share of bill (~$20), I was MORE HUNGRY than when I walked in. I ended up walking straight to Chipotle.
I guess the moral of the story is to follow your gut feelings (straight out of the restaurant!). Also, I guess if you don't have a lot of money to spend on overpriced tapas, don't go to Pata Negra.
Yuhe's Suggestions:
- I did see and extensive wine menu at Pata Negra. Maybe the overpriced food tastes better when paired with expensive (probably overpriced) wine.Comment from rafael m. of Pata Negra 4/14/2012

I have been to Pata Negra several times with groups and just 2 people or just me. I have always enjoyed the service and the selections of wines. They have always suggested great wines. Now the food is amazing. The selections of meat and cheese is one of the best. And the presentation is great. I have found the service to be great. If anything I wish it was a little bigger. But not loose it's cozy charm.

Lovely and romantic atmosphere that was perfect for a night out with my boyfriend. The food was also delicious, one of the better tapas bars I have been to (you can always tell by the sizzling shrimp, and this one was phenomenal!). As with all tapas bars, don't come here if you expect to get a ton of food for what your paying, but what we had was enjoyable and worth taking small, savory nibbles.
We were also extremely happy with the two waiters that served us a lady and a young man who were both very nice. Luckily we did not have to deal with the man who appeared to be the owner, but we saw him several times complaining and yelling that the waiters talked too much. Something we did not have a problem with since we enjoyed their conversation.
For the kind service and the good food we would definitely be willing to return!Comment from rafael m. of Pata Negra 4/7/2012

One of the better tapas spots I've seen in the city. Really nice interior, colors are calming. Slightly cramped in there but cozy-cramped.
My girlfriend and I really liked the food. The empanada was delicious and the serrano ham/cheese patitas were great. Mmmm salty. We loved the wine too. Friendly, helpful staff.

I dined here with a group of my closest friends and my cousin last Friday, and have been outraged by the egregious comments the host of this establishment has posted in reply to my cousin's review of the restaurant.
While I understand his frustration in regards to the poor tip that was left in response to poor service, NOTHING warrants such indignant and racist comments by the host. As an African American, Ivy League educated, native New Yorker, this is the first time that I have been affronted in such a way. Chasing patrons down the block is rather crass, and thus, as a testament to his appalling behavior please read some of the host's comments to my cousin, which yelp has yet to show (probably due to its appalling nature):
"In retrospect, the only true sadness of this debacle is that you have missed the point entirely, and will continue to behave and tip poorly in other restaurants to come. It is moreover discouraging that you have perpetuated the stereotype... I am afraid you do not have the cultural wherewithal and basic human compassion to analyze the events of the evening honestly and admit your culpability in this entire affair.
I thought long on whether or not to respond. As a former educator in the South Bronx and East Harlem for junior high school students, your behavior reminded me of the teenagers I served with special needs. It would have been wrong of me then not educate them, as much as it would have been wrong of me now to let it go without protecting my fine staff who do their best night in and night out.
And I for one did not open a restaurant for the masses. That is what McDonald's and the like is for. You can berate a Subway's employee and the manager will probably fire them."
To Rafael: you may be dismayed by insufficient gratuity but I am disgusted by your bigotry and ignorance.
Second reply to Rafael as follows:
First of all, you insult us yet again claiming that we are a proud yet confused bunch, assuming when things don't go our way it is attributed to race. However, you're the one who didn't have things go your way and you berate and chase us down the block for more tip.
Note, I completely understand your frustration. Our friend that left early did not leave enough for her portion of the check, so there were miscalculations as a result, which admittedly is our mishap. Nevertheless, we weren't completely satisfied with your service after being kicked from our table to go to the bar. My friend with me also noted that our former table was empty for almost another 30 minutes after our moving to the bar.
That said, when you did come running after us to ask for more tip I was willing to add more to my bill (which fyi- $48 was charged to my card and I added $8 for gratuity to honor the so-called"SOP"); however, when you continue with an aggressive tone and start saying disparaging things to my friends, I lost respect in regards to your appalling behavior.
I do not live in fear. I have attended schools consisting of predominantly Caucasian students my entire life. I have also lived in this city my entire life and embrace its diversity despite some individuals' negative attitudes.
My gripe with you is that my comment was in response to your rather insulting reply to my cousin. The fact that you can't even acknowledge that the words you said were demeaning is quite saddening.
I admit our fault. We left poor tip. My apologies.
Nevertheless, as a man of color, it's also a shame that you used the jargon you did to somehow admonish us. You've also insulted other businesses such as Mcdonald's and Subway, which obviously aren't the most posh of establishments, but I'm sure, like you, their business owners have worked hard and hopefully take pride in their employees as well.
Thanks for your "forgiveness", but your sarcasm and derision are not acceptable.
Good luck with your business endeavors. Hopefully, future patrons do not encounter the same experience we did last week.
Take care.Comment from rafael m. of Pata Negra 4/4/2012

Had THE best glass of wine of my life here with my husband.
It was date night. We had just been to see Midnight in Paris and after being in Woody Allen's European world we didn't want to leave yet.
I stumbled across Pata Negra on Yelp, and we quickly made our way over. Am so glad we did.
We both had a glass of 2009 Javier Sanz Villa Narcisa Verdejo. It really is magnificent. Since being here I've been on the hunt for who else sells it in NY, and I now know you can buy it from Astor Wines.
Great establishment, wonderful wine selection and very sweet staff!Listed in: Amo il Vino.

If you are looking for a killer wine selection, incredible tapas and fun & knowledgeable staff, you need to check out Pata Negra. If you are looking for a sexy spot to take a significant other, or a great spot to start your night, I will let you in on one of my secrets. Ask for Mateo, the owner - if he is there you will know! He has a magnetic personality and his love for great wine and delicious food is contagious! I have learned more about wine and cheese in a few nights at Pata Negra than in several years of fine dining. And there are no pretensions - if you are a wine novice you will have as much fun as a connoisseur. There are no mistakes to be made here - the tapas are so delicious they make me wanna smack somebody. The food was so obviously prepared with loving attention I even tried the house signature dish, the Pata Negra - and I don't eat pork!
The ambiance is amazing, the prices are fair, and the service is excellent. Enjoy! -

I am a lover of Spanish cuisine. It may be because I am Cuban and Puerto Rican. I always end up eating 60% of the time at a latino restaurant. hey our food is delicious what can I say. My father and I had a discussion about ham from Spain and he mentioned something I have never heard before called Pata Negra. Pata Negra translates to black foot. In Spain a particular pig is bred and cared for to create a ham called Pata Negra, supposedly the best one can eat in Spain and arguably the world. So for my father's Birthday I decided to take a group of us to the only place in NYC that sells this particular brand of ham. Luckily the place if called Pata Negra.
This could by far have been the best tapas bar I have ever been in. It is super tiny so it is best to make reservations. EVerything we ordered was out of this world from the manchego cheese to the chorizo to the jamon iberico to finally the Pata Negra. This piece of meat is a melt in your mouth beauty to behold. The butteryness( just made up a word. That's how amazing it is) and pure ham flavor is unbelieveable. A group of four were able to eat and feel comfortable afterwards.
I would have given it 5 stars but I did not particularly enjoy their sangria. It is a bit expensive but for a date night to impress someone I would come here in a heart beat. I plan on seeing you again Pata Negra. -

Anyways they have an extentsive wine menu many different cheeses and Jamon which is absolutely great if thats all you are looking for. The tapas they served lacked luster and overly simple.
The sangria is also something to mention. it was definitely below average. tasted like Carlo Rossi jug sangria with cubed apples. Failed to impress for 33 dollars a pitcher. id perfer Flor de sol or Alta much more..Comment from rafael m. of Pata Negra 2/16/2012

Soooo delicious... I can't believe I just found this place! Definitely among my favorite tapas restaurants in NYC. It's really tiny & quaint, and the food and service was fantastic. Great laid back waitress who gave honest recommendations about what food she loves & doesn't, and she also suggested we get a giant jar of sangria only if we were "getting after it" for the rest of the night - lol!

This is one of my favorite places in the LES. i always have a great time and experience here. The vibe is very cool with a great staff and atmosphere. The space is intimate and very accomodating at the same time so great to go with friends, big groups, a date or just to stop by for a quickie.
The food is always delicious - with my favorite being the the selection of Jamon & queso!!!!! The wine list is also always tasty and interesting with new selections every month so I'm also learning about a new bottle or two everytime I visti.
I agree with recent reviews that the owner is nothing but friendly and always inviting to the customers. He brings a great warmth to the place and always very attentive. The entire staff for that matter.
Net, Net... its top notch all the way. A great place to have in the rotation, for just stopping by, having dinner, a night cap or a quick beer.
Go explore and have fun. You won't be disappointed! -

i have been a patron of Pata Negra since it opened and since then the quality of the food and service of the staff have always been impeccable. As a relatively new wine drinker, the owner, Matteo has always taken it upon himself to introduce me to a new great wine every time I've gone back. The only thing I wish was that the space was a little bit bigger but I've gone alone, with a date or a group of friends and the staff always do their best to accommodate me. I plan on going back soon!

Review from Julia S.
I really, really enjoyed this place. We were waiting on a friend to meet her for dinner, and we ended up here mostly because it wasn't far from the subway stop we took. Or really, I started frantically looking for someplace else because I didn't like the first place we went, beauty bar.
I cannot speak to the food too much, because all we had was some of their goat cheese, but omg it was absolutely delicious, and the way they served it was amazing too. They served it with this delicious cranberry walnut bread, thin slices of apple, and this smear of fruit preserve. We absolutely devoured it.
Since we weren't eating, we were required to sit at the bar, but I ended up really liking that because the bartender/server was actually super nice and friendly, and we also got a good view of all the wines and the food preparation. Everything is made to order (always nice to see), and everything coming out looked tasty and smelled sooo good.
We didn't really end up ordering any of the wine, but we did order a pitcher of sangria for $33, and I feel like for NYC at that price, it was a really good deal.
The only downside for me of this wine bar is they have nothing but bar stools, which I despise with a fiery burning passion. That still didn't keep me from spending a good couple of hours here, nonetheless, so that says something about the atmosphere of this place. -
Review from Kevin W.
I would view this as another version of Bar Jamon, somewhere you'd come for great charcuterie and wine, but now a wow for cooked food.
Wasn't that wowed by the garlic shrimp. Sure, it's good, but its shrimp nicely cooked and in garlic, nothing special.
Pata negra - now that was special. Wow. Try it. So silky and buttery in flavor. I could hear the black food pigs snorting along as they sniffed the ground for acorns and truffle treasures before being hacked and put on my plate. At 40 buckaroos tho it's obviously a splurge, especially if u finish it all by yourself which I basically did.
Roasted vegetables with goat cheese was good but a skimpy serving for what you pay imo.
Almonds and olives were decent.
This is a pig lover's charcuterie heaven. -

I was there few days ago for dinner. The food was not so great: Tapas were really simple and sangria just below what I believe to be OK.
On the other hand, the jamon was vey good and and the bill was reasonable. If back again, I will try some wine but not the sangria... -

Pata Negra continues to be a great addition to the EV neighborhood in every possible way. I had the pleasure of writing one of the first reviews for Pata Negra when they first opened and as such have had the pleasure of watching this place evolve into the really great establishment that it is. The food is top notch and the wines are delicious. While there are other tapas places in the area, none match the level of sophistication or the quality of service. I found Pata Negra interesting four years ago and think the same is true today!

Pata Negra is now officially one of my top 5 favorite places in the entire city of New York. Five of us were able to secure a 7:15 reservation on Saturday eve the day off. When we arrived, our table was set up and the waitress seated us right away, despite only three of us being there. The awesome service continued throughout the evening...a one-woman show for the entire restaurant and she was stellar.
Here was what we ordered throughout the night...
Round One:
*Ham sampling - I've had this before and I looked so forward to having it again. Well worth the $35 you'll spend on three types of ham (the Pata Negra being the knock out) and tomato-rubbed bread
*Cheese plate of three cheeses, the names of all I don't remember aside from the Monte Enebro which was great. Came with fig compote, sliced apples, and raisin bread
*Garlic shrimp tapas - A must-try here but look out to anyone who you get close to later...when they say garlic, they mean garlic
*Meatballs - Super good...some of the best albondigas I've had outside of Spain
*Asparagus - Subtle and refreshing fantastic. It's easy to do asparagus wrong and they did it so, so right
Round Two:
*Chorizo - I am not a big chorizo fan but this was good, though not the star of the eve. The accompaniments stood out (onions, in particular) more than the chorizo itself
*Olives and almonds - Some of the best almonds I've ever had and olives so fresh, half were on the stem. Such a simple dish and done so incredibly well.
The above plus 3 bottles of a fantastic Tempranillo came in at $60 a person with a 30% tip. Unbeatable.
Pata Negra delivers a wonderful experience that can make anyone, including me, love New York...at least for a bit.Listed in: When I'm hatin' on New York..., New York City's TOP TEN, Best of NYC: Wine Bars

I had the PERFECT date at Pata Negra last night! I'm in the middle of one of the busiest work weeks of my life, and my wonderful boyfriend called me at the office to say he would meet me downtown and take me out to dinner. I have to credit him for choosing Pata Negra.
The restaurant is cozy with the perfect ambiance for a weekday dinner. We started with the G wine, which was very good. I know nothing about Spanish wines and our waiter (the owner) was extremely friendly and helpful.
Our meal included:
- Almendras y Aceitunas - Almonds and Spiced Olives
- Gambas al Ajillo - Shrimp, garlic (I avoid garlic regularly to keep my breath fresh, but this was soooo good!)
- Extremadura - Chorizo, Lomo, Ibérico, Manchego - a large platter, perfect for 2 to share.
The Ibérico was delicious and we're going back soon to try the Pata Negra. I highly highly recommend this restaurant, especially for a date. -

I went to Madrid without using my passport! I loved this place, the wine was delicious and the tortilla was phenomenal. It is a little small and not the best for parties of 4 or more. The place was packed, and there were only two servers. Service was a little slow but they weren't pushy and allowed us to stay chat for a spell :-)
Can't wait to go back and try the Jamon plates! -

Oh Pata Negra your signature dish disappoint me. And only that dish was the only disappointment. Sure it was good, but it wasn't great (so not worth the $40!). I had much better melt in my mouth ham before. Boo!
Other than that I'd definitely come back for the wine and cheese and the patitas. It's a very dim and calming little restaurant. Great for catching up with girlfriends or just a quiet date. -

One of the better Tapas places in the area. I lived in Madrid and the dishes here are more authentic than some of the other trendier spots in the hood. It's all about the ham, baby.
The cheese and meat plates (get the jamon serrano!) and tortilla espanola are really good. They also have a lovely selection of Spanish wines that are priced fairly well.

Review from Ashwin M.
Found this place b/c it's on a treasure trove of a block with Motorino, S'mac and Luzzo's all a stone's throw away. Everything was fine, nothing was bad, but nothing was stellar. Atmosphere was quite loud and boisterous on a friday night and accentuated by the space being so small - literally 10 tables in probably 250 sq ft of space.
That was fine, not an issue to a city regular lol, but food quality just wasn't up to par. Garlic shrimp was so so compared to others I've had elsewhere, a bit dry and lacking flavor. Tortilla was prob my favorite, very rich and heavy as a thick omelet should be! Asparagus and roasted veggies with goat cheese were both average, nothing to write home about.
Nothing bad to say about Pata Negra, and I like the cute little space / decor, but I can think of several other tapas spots where I'd rather spend my money quite honestly.. -

So my companion and I headed over to the East Village last Thursday night in search of the solid tapas place I made reservations for off of Yelp - we found Pata Negra.
We strolled in an saw one last two-top table open in an entire 20-seat restaurant that was left for us. Success!
With prior knowledge of my companion having a significant obsession with Tostada y Tomate - this was swiftly ordered in my attempt at romanticism. She obliged and enjoyed mucho.
Along with our Andalucian Pinot that we began guzzling - we ordered the 15 year aged Jamon Serrano and this fantastic dish of Esparragos Aioli that provided explosions of flavor on our taste-buds.
Needless to say - this place has "date-spot" written all of it and we indeed exploited this fact to the max.Listed in: NYC Bar Crawl

I came here Friday night for dinner with the girls. The service was awful! Once dinner was over, we asked our waitress for the check; then decided that we wanted to stay to have another bottle of wine. Since our waitress already left our seating area we stopped the hostess to inform him on our decision. He told us that we had to leave or sit by the bar because someone just called for reservations so he was going to give them our area. Although that was a turn off we just decided to stay and have a bottle of wine at the bar. After our bottle at the bar we decided to leave. We literally got to the next avenue when we noticed that the hostess was running after us. Initially we assumed that we forgot something and he was returning it; however we soon discovered that he was begging for more tip.

Pata Negra is a restaurant I've wanted to try for a long while now. So while finding a restaurant for dinner with a friend, I thought, well let's go to Pata Negra.
Four of us went to this restaurant, and naturally we decided to order several dishes to share. From the Jamon section of the menu, we ordered Degustacion de Jamon, which was a tasting of three hams, and the Jabugo, which had chorizo, lomo, pata negra, and manchego. From the tapas section, we ordered the Pisto con Cabra (roasted vegetables with goat cheese), Tortilla, Esparragos Aioli (asparagus with garlic mayo), Gambas al Ajillo (shrimp with garlic), and chorizo.
The Gambas al Ajillo was absolutely delicious, and I also loved the Esparragos Aioli. Pata Negra, being popular for its ham, does not disappoint with its jamon offerings. From the chorizo to the lomo, and of course, the pata negra, everything tasted delicious. I don't remember the last time I tasted ham quite like it.Listed in: East Village Eats

This place is a really good and interesting tapas restaurant in the East Village. Most tapas places have huge menus of everything you can think of, super generic stuff like bacon wrapped dates and ham and melon. This place is different in that the menu is quite small and they basically do assortments of ham (jamon) and cheese (queso). That's a good thing because they do it well.
Two of us had 1 bottle of wine, the degustacion of 5 type of toast points (amazing for $8), a cheese plate, a huge jamon plate, the garlic shrimp and bread dish, and a blood sausage plate. It was very rich, as a expected, and quite filling even though it wasn't a ton of food; but it was high quality stuff. It ended up being pricey, but minus the bottle of wine, it would've been very competitively priced. The service was also exceptional - they offered suggestions, cleaned the table, quick to serve and fill up our water and wine and make room for us in such a tiny setting.
All in all, I highly recommend this place - you will not be disappointed. -

I have been a die hard fan of Pata Negra and Chef Mateo for at least 6 years. His knowledge of wine, food and the NYC scene is unparalleled. I dine out at least 5 days a week and I must say that the Pata Negra staff and the service they provide is bettert than many of the higher end places in this city. Not to mention that Pata Negra has the best Jamon outside of Spain.
