I needed to have my passport renewed not so long ago. A few friends recommended I stop by Passport Photo Halifax on Quinpool to have my picture taken.

And with a name like that, it made perfect sense.

This place was fast and cheap and efficient. What more can you ask for? I got my passport renewed with plenty of time to spare. If you need a passport you need passport photos...and if you need passport photos taken, you should probably head to Passport Photo Halifax.

This is the most horrible service that I ever had in Canada. I wanted to take a photo for my VISA. So I checked the official requirements for a standard VISA-photo. After taking the photo, I felt that the photo was a bit dark so asked him if this photo was alright for VISA application.  Without any hesitation he said nothing was wrong with the photo. But I was still skeptical about the photo because I have seen dozens of standard photos on line before I came into this shop. Thus, I asked him one more time if this photo was a bit dark. All I wanted to hear was he's willing to take a free photo if my VISA get refused due to the quality of photo. Interestingly, his voice changed all of sudden and started snapping at me. I quote " you must be out of your mind" and he was dead very serious. Then I said " cannot I ask questions about my photo as a customer? Why would you lose your temper?". He replied in a very serious manner " because I fucking answered you twice!!!".

I am willing to pay 10 times more than he charges only if the professional had a better customer service. Is not his "professional skill" also includes the excellent customer service??? I do not recommend this place if you need more than just taking a photo.

Sometimes when you've been doing something for a long time, you become arrogant and think you are above following instructions, or above listening to your customer.

Gary is a professional technical photographer, there's no question about the quality of his technique or style.

But I asked for a citizenship photo and when I tried to hand him the sheet of photographic specifications, he wouldn't look at it. I figured he knew what he was doing since he's been in the business for decades.

However when I got the photos home and measured them, they were way off the required specifications. I had to trim the photos at home in order to finish his work properly. I just hope my work was neat enough to be accepted.

I do not recommend Passport Photo.

As a word of advice, I recommend asking any passport photographer, in advance, whether they will measure the final photograph in order to see that it conforms with specifications. Also, if they will not look at the sheet of specifications in the first place, move on.

I needed to get my photo taken for a US travel document.  Usually I do this sort of thing myself using a digital camera and computer, but I was in a hurry and since the document was very important for me not to screw up, I decided to try a "professional" service.  Gave this place a call and he said he does US travel document photo, so I gave it a shot.

I don't wish to diss a locally-owned shop like this one, but my experience here was terrible, not average or so-so, so I have to give it a review.

First the photographer was funny and all, but when I asked politely if I could measure the size of my head on the photo to see if that matches the specification, the guy flatly refused and started cursing (yes he did *curse*) at me saying nobody ever rejected his photos.

Well, given that he's still in business, I could believe what he said, but that's not a good reason for preventing me from "buying" the peace of mind that I was trying to get from the professional service.  Cursing at a customer is not a way to win over customers.

Needless to say, the photo didn't fit the spec given by the US goverment, haha.  Fortunately whoever issued me the travel document wasn't very picky and the photo didn't screw me up.

However, the service certainly was not worth the money I paid.  I'll do it on computer myself next time.  So much for Halifax local business.

Passport Photo has been on Quinpool Road for as long as I can remember. You really do have to slow down or you will miss it.

The owner of here is fantastic, he has personality and can work with anyone. He did our passports years ago, and it was painless. I personally hate getting pictures taken.

He has a quick humour, and we had a great chat to where we were going and some of the art that covers his walls.

You will not get a better service anywhere.

    Keep Smilin!

Passport Photo Halifax is a tiny shop on Quinpool just a few doors down from the Oxford Theatre.  Don't blink or you'll miss it, and that would be a pity.

Today my daughter had to take her little ones - aged 1 and 3 for their passport photos and she asked me to help with what usually is quite an ordeal.

Not to worry today though.  I do wish I got the photographer's name.  He's wonderful with kids and although he warned us that it might take a while, he somehow mesmerized them and the photos were done in no time.   He's awesome!   Somehow - must have been Svengali in another life, he had them sitting still and serious (after all it was for passports - no smiles allowed).  We were out within 15 minutes!

And he is also a primitive style painter, with lovely fanciful paintings decorating his small shop.   I might go back just for another look at them.  Boaz particularly liked the ones with blue cats.

Yesterday's afternoon adventures took me into this passport photo haven. The owner and photographer, Gary, is so fantastic. He knows everything there is to know about passports, working visas, as well as ESL teaching photos for overseas work.

He not only took my pictures for multiple documents, but he also gave me the renewal slips for my Canadian passport along with some great advice. He gave me the ins and outs for having the various photos signed and what is required by different countries. This man is a gem!

Not only is Gary the top aficionado of all things passport related, he has the best prices in town. If you're on Spring Garden or Barrington, plan on paying 1/3rd more than at this great Quinpool store. Gary also sells his own original paintings here, which I believe he paints on site. This place is the bee's knees in passport photography. Say cheese!

PS - Gary takes cash only, so bring the real deal.

Ruth D isn't kidding when she says you'll miss this place if you blink. To be perfectly honest I did not even know the store had a name!

I was in here not too long ago to get new passport photos. The set up is very basic, but quaint. Again, as Ruth said there are a number of paintings and crafts around the place which are nice to look at while you're waiting.

The gentleman who took my photos was friendly, funny and very good at his job. The process was quick, painless and cheap. How can one ask for anything more?

On a side note, one of my favorite things about this shop is that they have a digital clock in the window so every morning on my walk to work I can see how late I am. It usually helps me get my butt into gear, so thanks very much for that!

If you need passport photos done, this is the spot to go.
