Review from Kat F.
So now that I'm pretty much eating fish 'n chips on the regular, I had to check out Parkside Fish And Chips on recommendation of my friend John A, who's been eating here since childhood. There is no seating - it's just a takeaway shop, but if you're in the mood to try it, give me a ring and you can come eat it at my place, cause it's essentially in my backyard. Yeah? I imagine it's very busy during the day when the nearby school lets out for lunch.
It's nothing to look at (inside or out), but it's been kicking since 1928 so these people know what they're doing. That's longer than the alleged oldest fish 'n chips shop, Reliable Fish & Chips. The old Asian couple that runs the place has been at it for 23 years. They're well spoken (given the proximity to Chinatown East I expected accents, but there was absolutely no hint of one), kind and efficient with the ordering process.
I ordered a halibut and chips ($8) and they carefully doled it onto wax paper and then wrapped it in three layers of newsprint and sealed the parcel with tape. I didn't get salt and vinegar on my meal but was asked if I wanted it (other customers seemed to go for it).
I'm new to the world of fish but this was an excellent serving for the money - not too much batter, lots of soft, flaky "meat" and the fries were dynamite. Bear in mind that the meal is extremely greasy. Blot before you bite.
Parkside uses canola oil only, no trans fats, and they have other fish available if you're feeling sassy. Prices for each, including chips:
Grouper: $6.25
Sole: $6.25
Haddock: $6.75
Halibut: $8
Takeout only.
Cash only.
N.B. This place is so off the fucking grid that I had to Google Street View it just to get the address to add it to Yelp.Listed in: The Best Places To Eat, Shop &…, Fish In The City
