Typically I am not a fan of animal parks. Seeing animals behind fences and cages is not this girls idea of a good time..so when my boyfriend suggested we stop in at Parc Omega on a recent trip to eastern Quebec I wasn't sure how to respond.

Thankfully the park blew away all my preconceived notions of what it would be like. The day we went wasn't a particularly nice day so there was very little traffic on the narrow dirt roads throughout the park, which was fun because we could take our time and really enjoy ourselves. You travel through the whole park in your own car, except for a small area where you have the option to hop on a golf cart and explore the woods.

Everywhere throughout the park wild boars, various deer and antlered creatures roamed freely. These guys are clearly not in a rush to move out of the way for us silly humans in cars. Many of them associate car full of humans with free carrot snacks. So don't forget to spend the $4 (I think) on a big bag of carrots for the various friends along the way. Beware, though. Keep the carrots well hidden in your vehicle because some of the elk or caribou have no shame in sticking their hairy heads into the car and helping themselves to whatever they feel like.

You are able to rent a golf cart in one section of the park and take a drive through out the heavily wooded trails where you can stop off at a real live farm (there's even a woman with wild grey hair and overalls) to meet & greet various with farm animals. Fun for kids or immature 28 year olds like myself who absolutely adored the fat floppy-eared bunny, sheep and goats, chickens and horses.

Unlike a zoo where you have to strain to see the animals (and if you're lucky actually get to see anything), at Parc Omega the animals are so comfortable in their surroundings (and they have BIG surroundings) that you will easily be able to see all kinds of beautiful furry friends in their habitat, including some very large, very intimidating black bears, buffalo and wolves.

There's also a lodge you can stop in at the beginning of the park where you can find all the information, stop by the gift shop, grab a bite to eat and take a look at the photography museum in the basement.

Even if you're just passing through Montebello, be sure to take a few hours and stop by Parc Omega. It's time well spent for kids and adults alike.
