The quality of this restaurant depends exclusively on what you order...5 stars for cashew chicken and sweet and sour chicken, 4 stars for curry dishes, and 0 stars for so-called pad Thai (called fried noodles on the menu), because it is basically ketchup and sugar. If you want cheap Thai food, order the cashew chicken...it's awesome and it will feed you for two days.

Not good customer service over the phone. I wanted to find out what's good in their resto and other details like offerings and specials for the day. Unfortunately, I was greeted with a stressed lady that was irritated in picking up the phone at 11:00am
I don't see that much customer when I pass by and first impression lasts, therefore I'm not even gona try this place because of their attitude they showed me. -

WOW! Probably THE worst Thai I've ever had...and I practically live on Thai so I have had a ton to compare it to.
What the hell was that? Flavourless, greasy and expensive? It's left a horrible taste in my mouth. Even with adding flavors from my kitchen at home, my husband and I could only muster to get down 1/4th of the crap.
I'm upset and insulted that they think they can get away with charging high prices for whatever that just was.
If you want quality and reasonable prices, stick to Thida Thai downtown. I've learned my lesson. -

If the staff don't know what is in the food, is that really somewhere you want to eat?
I was craving peanut sauce, so I asked our server if it was vegetarian and was told "I don't know". I checked to make sure I heard her right and then proceeded to inquire about a few other sauces. She had no idea what was in any of the sauces and said that they don't make any of them, so she wasn't sure. I don't know if she was too lazy to look at the label on the tub of sauce in the kitchen or if there was even a label to look at. Not having a vegetarian option is one thing, but not knowing what is in the food you are serving is inexcusable. Take some pride in your business! I didn't want to make a scene as I was with some colleagues, so I ordered some steamed vegetables. You can imagine how boring that was. Soy sauce (which I hope was vegetarian) couldn't save it.
I signed up for Yelp just to write this review, it was really that bad of an experience. -

Cashew Nut Chicken all the way-you have to try it.
This place is great for the price and flavour. Super cheap lunch meals that are quite large and filling. I have one friend that swears by Papaya Hut.
It's a tiny place, but great for a quick lunch date or pick-up on Burrard Street. More of a lunch place and not a sit-down dinner. It's nice to try a unique variety of cuisine other than sushi in Vancouver- Malaysian food is a cool twist.
However, I'm curious if they use MSG in their food.
There is no parking outside the restaurant (on busy Burrard), but you can sometimes find parking on 7th or another side street, though I recommend walking/bussing. -

Ordered take out from this place after craving for some Thai food.
We got their sweet curry with prawns, pad thai, and calamari and a side of coconut rice.
Delivery was quick.
Pad thai was not too good, it was just all noodles and nothing else. It could have used more prawns/egg/bean sprouts. The flavour was lacking; it was just a simple tomato sauce. The curry was a good, lots of large prawns, and fresh red/ green peppers. Rice was a good portion and it was a perfect companion to the curry. The calamari was alright, nothing too special.
This is a so so Thai place. Their prices are lower than others, but it seems as though the food is not as good. Will probably be ordering from somewhere else next time. -

This place is my lunch hangout. 7 bucks for a curry with rice, and a spring roll. So good. It's usually packed from 12-1, but usually I show up at 1pm and get seated right away. My fav is the beef curry (bamboo shoots own), and the cashew chicken is delish too.

My roomate brought home Thai Takeout and I had the unfortunate opportunity to have some leftovers.
The pad thai used a thick noodle (that's a first) and it was extremely dry and tomato sauce like with a hint of spice. Not impressed.
Curry was also part of the order which wasn't bad, although it seemed a little watery. Definitely a good sauce to put over rice. A veggie dish with mushrooms and peppers was another addition. It wasn't anything special but the mushrooms had a decent crunch and the sauce was tasty.
Although I have a coupon in the entertainment booklet, I probably would prefer to spend my money elsewhere. Who knows, maybe a dine-in experince would change my mind, but I might have to pass on that. -

Mucus and ketchup.
That is how I would sum up Papaya Hut. I love Thai food and I am not a picky eater at all and I could not take more than one bite of their Pad Thai. It was slimy, tasteless and full of ketchup. I know ketchup is put in Pad Thai by many North American Thai restaurants but this was taken way to far! When my dining partner went through the kitchen to visit the washroom she watched the cook blow his nose and then go straight back to cooking without washing his hands.
ewwwwwwwwwww!
Definitely a place to miss, walk another block and visit the Thai House! -

Very good Tom yum soup and spring rolls and fried rice. All had great flavor. Spring rolls a little oily though. Service was very quick and helpful. Happy to have found this little gem just around the corner.

I have eaten here several times, always for lunch except once I was there for a late dinner.
They have a bunch of lunch specials that you can get for $6.50 tax included. Today I had the chicken with peanut. It is a peanut sauce with chicken served over spinach and bean sprouts. You also get a spring roll and rice on the side.
It can be very busy at lunch time as it is a really good value and really fast. -

Before I write this review I would like to note that I do NOT like Pad Thai so I have never tried that particular dish at Papaya Hut and reading the reviews of my predecessors... I should probably be happy about it.
However, for all you nay-sayers out there I just want to say... what could possibly be wrong with yummy curry at delightfully low prices. Papaya hut has always been a staple for me after I was brought there by a co-worker after a long and cold autumn night of coaching. The portions are quite large, there is always a good amount of meat or tofu in every bowl, service is polite and quick, and you would be hard pressed to get a cheaper meal of that size and quality in Vancouver. Go for the yellow, green, red, or panang curry, stay for the friendly hole-in the wall atmosphere, return for the price! -

This place is a steal for Thai Curry!
Great Price! It's real close to Festival Fifth Ave. Cinema, so before or after watching a film there you owe it to yourself to visit. A group of 6 of us ate here and half of us ordered red, green and yellow curry to see if we could decide which one we like best- they were all pretty great.
*Open on Sundays
The staff are really nice and are always conscious to fill your water glass- I'm a wimp when it comes to spices but I could handle this well! -

I eat here every weekend and this weekend was no exception. I like the price and the size of their curry lunches (red, yellow and green to choose from) and, while they have never failed me in taste for these curries in the past, lately, the blush is off of the rose.
I usually order the same thing every time so I can only speak to this one meal - yellow curry with chicken and added prawns.
I have formed a great attachment to this yellow curry which is why this review pains me so. After three bad yellow curry lunches, I feel I must speak out.
It's the pineapple. There are pineapple pieces in this curry dish and they have always been fresh and juicy in the past. Then, without warning, I noticed a change.
The first time was about a month ago. The pineapple had the distinctive taste of the candied pineapple one finds in Christmas baking. Were they using candied pineapple for the holiday season?? It tasted terrible and completely ruined my Saturday routine.
I rationalized. Did they run out of pineapple at the last minute and were forced to make do? Has there been a pineapple disaster - a shortage of some kind - that I've been unaware of? Surely, this can't be intentional. Surely.
The following weekend, I gave it another try. Again. The pineapple tasted wrong. The texture was harder and dryer than usual. I was crestfallen.
I gave it one last try the following Saturday and, again, the pineapple was disastrous. Ugh. I am heart heavy. No more yellow curry from Papaya Hut for me.
So yesterday, I wandered over and gave the green curry lunch a go. The green curry contains no pineapple. Instead, it contains large chunks of eggplant.
This particular eggplant was so soggy it was falling apart. It was definitely old produce. Sigh.
Please, Papaya Hut. Get back to the fresh, tasty curries I have learned to love and look forward to on my Saturday afternoon jaunts. I'm sorely disappointed.
Oh. And while I'm at it, a word of warning. Do not get the sweet and sour chicken fried rice (a dish ordered by my dining partner). It is made with the same wretched pineapple and, horror of horrors, the flavouring is merely a generous toss with the bright red/orange sweet and sour sauce of takeout chinese food. I know. I was shocked too. -
Review from Cyrus G.
Decent food (I had curries), average prices and non-existant atmosphere. The food came out very quickly though so it's a good stop before a movie at fifth avenue cinemas.
I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend this place but it's not that bad either. -
Review from Katie F.
We had tickets to a movie at Fifth Avenue Cinemas so we came here for a quick dinner.
Lots of selection and prices are inexpensive - most curries are about $10 each. We started off with the beef salad which was spicy and okay.
The pad Thai was also okay - noodles were firm but the sauce was a bit bland. I liked that it was non-greasy. Could use more sprouts and shrimp.
The penang curry and a side of rice rounded out the meal. Rice is ok but could use more of coconut flavor. Curry was tasty with veggies and beef and was quite hot. Nice flavor. This has made great leftovers for lunch :)
Fast and friendly service. There are better places in town but this is decent value and A-OK overall. -
Review from Tim L.
This place serves it's dishes and combos at a cheap price during lunch and that's pretty much the only time I go now once I discovered that.
Dishes that stuff you full and with sharp flavours that are definitely not bland means for a steal of a meal. All for under $10!
It certainly beats Thai House just a block away. It is a much smaller establishment though, which means seating is very limited and more suited to 1 or 2 people rather than groups. -

This is a great place for a quick lunch with entry-level Thai food. My friend works near here and has quickly become addicted to their food -- mind you, he's a spice-wimp. The folks at Papaya Hut seem to know their strength -- Thai-ish food that has been dumbed down to a Thai/Chinese mix that is friendly to they typical Canadian office-worker.
I have been here with a bunch of middle-aged ladies I worked with and everyone left happy. We shared a bunch of different things and everything was tasty, it was delivered quickly and we were able to get back to the office within our designated hour. The prices are very reasonable, too.
There's not much doing in terms of atmosphere, so it's not a place you'd take a date. But if you just want something quick for lunch or a take-away meal, keep this spot in mind! -

In Papaya Hut I trust... for my lunch.
For all the young professionals that don't want to spend all the hard earned money Papaya Hut is a god sent.
Cheap, fresh tasty Thai classics that are full of flavor and textures. The menu is full of mouthwatering curries and other Thai delights. My personal favourite is the cashew chicken. I just can't get enough of it. For $6.50 you get a pretty large launch plate with an egg roll. what more can you ask for.
Beware, once you try Papaya you'll get hooked.
Tip: if you intend to take out bring a plastic container with you and they will gladly serve your launch in it. the alternative is using non-recycable containers. -

Great cheap Thai food and the lunches are an even greater prices, 6.50 for a large curry lunch. A Definite must go. Small, cute- mom and pop shop, not much ambiance but a quick and tasty lunch is always had.

Very cheap, and you get a lot of food. The service is very fast and attentive, and the prices are all nice even numbers (tax included). The food is tasty but pretty generic, from what I have seen and tasted. Great for lunch breaks.

We ordered from Papaya Hut a little while ago wanting to branch out from our usual Thai delivery. I'm sad to say that on top of receiving food that was quite average and bland, both my husband and I had stomach problems from eating it. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!

Papaya hut is an interesting place. I have a friend who lives about a block away and we'd always avoided it based on the fact neither of us are big Thai food fans. Then one day she got the courage and now she has us both addicted.
Basically what it has going for it is a menu of food which doesn't reflect what I traditionally think of as Thai. It's curries are a bit different and there are loads of options that resemble no Thai food I've ever had before. They might be a bit too odd/bland for the usual Pad Thai lover but for me they're just perfect.
Also, as the other reviews stated it's a bit of a small place but what they lack in tables they make up for in a freakishly efficient pickup/takeout service. I've never placed an order so quickly on the phone or had it filled and ready so accurately. We honestly spend hours figuring out how they have dishes ready in five minutes or less and never screw up considering they spend about two seconds talking to you , haha.
Definitely this is a hidden little gem and worth checking out. -

Ugh... I wanted this place to be good because it is so close to where I live, but it just was NOT good. We ordered spring rolls, pad thai, and chicken red curry. Everything was really greasy and it tasted like they used the absolute cheapest ingredients possible. The chicken tasted like fat, hardly any vegetables in the curry, and the pad thai was a disgrace to pad thai everywhere. And for what it was... it was expensive. Stay away so maybe something better will open up there!

From time to time I have lunch there. Great Value and the quality is fine. The room is small and without charm. Service is speedy and the food is consistently very good......Papaya Hut is outstanding when you consider the price of the lunch specials.....Lots of food fresh and delicious. I note the execution of the dishes while always good varies slightly from visit to visit.. I do not like the Pad Thai at all but have been happy with most everything else on the menu. Have never had dinner here....but dine in and take out lunch.
Great place to try out . -

I have enjoyed the basil and chili chicken lunch special here a few times. Their lunch special prices are very hard to beat.
