Came here for the Pan de Sals-- a crazy good value: got the set for around $8 which had 2 pan de sals (big soft, yet crunchy on the outside buns stuffed with yummy MEEEEAT, sorry got carried away)-- I got the must-have chicken adobe, and perfectly sweet and salty sardine. The set came with unlimited coffee (good strong coffee!) and a little bowl of decadent freshly whipped cream topped with chocolate syrup and sliced fruit (was glad I had someone to share it with). The table next to us ordered food from Grill21-- I am going there next!
As for ambience, it's quiet and comfortable. I think they can comfortably seat a 2 group of 8 people if the place isn't too crowded. Gorgeous hand painted rain forest mural on the walls. -

Meh.
The pictures look better than the products.
Walked over here on this sunny afternoon, after this place popped up on my radar a few weeks ago.
I had the small triangle carrot cake, which wasn't really "knock my socks off" fresh. Just kinda cold and too firm. For about $4.50 it was really just ok.
Friendly staff. Nice seating options if you want an alternative to Starbucks, but I wouldn't go out of my way. -

The other day, I was walking around Gramercy with a few eating buddies when we happened upon a quaint and cozy cafe called Pan de Sal. A quick glimpse through the picture windows revealed brightly colored walls and the thing that was a dealmaker for me - an extensive cupcake and dessert spread! In the name of research, of course, I had to stop in and see what all this dessert was about.
Our little peek in was worth it, as we were rewarded with a plethora of mini cupcakes as well as macarons, cakes, tarts and croissants. I decided to go with a mini red velvet, a popular choice at Pan de Sal. This bite size morsel hit the spot - moist and flavorful, and topped with a dense and tart cream cheese frosting. My only regret was that I didn't order two!
My eating buddy treated himself to a heartier meal - a coffee and chocolate croissant. I snuck a taste of the croissant, which was flaky and fresh. The chocolate filling was generous - oftentimes skimpy filling is a big issue (in my opinion) for chocolate croissants; no such worries here!
The decor was very bright and cheery, with this extensive mural adorning the walls and the owner came by to take our order personally and provide recommendations. Love the personal touch!
I especially liked these super-cute wedding cakes on display. Overall, the dining experience at Pan De Sal was warm and cozy - a perfect place to stop by for a quick bite on a weekend! If you're in the neighborhood, stop in for a dessert or beverage!
Super cute cafe with friendly service. -

Brunch with no eggs??? I'm guessing this place is good for its namesake but seriously, the owner was outside talking up brunch (we came soon after they first opened as a restaurant), seemed like a nice guy so we went in to give it a try. We were the only people inside and, again, since the owner seemed nice, we decided not to leave when the menu appeared to be extremely limited and not exactly what we were thinking brunch would be.
Ended up ordering waffles. He came by and asked how they were, how they were as in he had never tried them before and was wondering about them. I find that to be unacceptable, you own the place.
The pastries all looked really good and I would def stop in and give it a try for that purpose but never again for the brunch. -

It's definitely a unique addition to the neighborhood. It looks charming enough from the outside, a bakery with a dining area to the side. While I've never sat and had a meal, I've taken several pastries to go on various occasions. I really want to like Pan de Sal, but somehow the goods leave me unsatisfied. They're okay, not the most delicious I've tried. But they're so gosh darn pretty to look at, that you want to try. I've not thoroughly enjoyed anything as yet. They lack salt in the sweets, y'all fellow foodies know what I mean. Just to bring out the sweetness. The brownies were sweet and dry. The mini baklavas, the same. The mini cakes taste artificial, not fresh. A bit of salt would make a difference. Haven't been back after the last time I tried, but I'm open to it for down the road.
Want to try the pan de sal for sure. -

I LOVE THEIR COFFEE. It's nicely full bodied and strong, and even tastes good when it gets cold at the bottom of the cup. New York is lacking in good coffee (I'm not talking about espresso based drinks, but rather just regular drip coffee, which often comes too weak or pre-sugared). The pan de sal with adobo is also delicious. There is a beautiful rainforest mural in the dining area, and the staff are simply the sweetest. Great for a quiet, relaxing cup of coffee and a pastry.

Walking home from work, I saw the cheesecakes and cookies in the window. I've been looking for a good bakery in my neighborhood!
I didn't expect the menu to exeed past that, but I was very excited to see that the special of the day was their Salmon Burger! Delicious is an understatement! It also came with a warm Southwest Quinoa Salad (aka the best vegiterian chili you'll ever have!)
I couldn't resist trying a pastry too (the reason I went inside!) The Lemon Meringue Tart was bliss! It was refreshing and creamy...and the meringue was so rich, almost marshmallow like, which I loved!
Can't wait to try more goodies from this gem!! -

Their pastries looked delicious and the staff (including the owner himself) was very warm and friendly though I only ordered a latte.
Too bad I was only there waiting for a friend and we had a dinner reservation elsewhere; otherwise I would've loved to try some of their desserts. Well, maybe next time! -

Pan De Sal is awesome! The actual Pan de Sal is pretty much my new favorite thing. I want to eat it every day, which I don't know can be that great for my health, but who does the healthy thing every day, anyway?
My friends and I went in and each got the Filipino breakfast which consisted of two pan de sal sliders (options were sardines, adobo chicken, corned beef, and pate). I went with adobo chicken and corned beef. The adobo chicken was mild, not as flavorful as I'd like, but the corned beef was just bomb. It reminded me of the way my Mom makes corned beef. So good. And filling!
The breakfast also came with fruit topped with chocolate syrup and whipped cream and a coffee. I opted for a cappuccino which brought my bill to $9 instead of $7.50, but it was so worth it! Total filling meal for under $10. With tip I spent $13. Done!
The shop is cute, with space to sit on the side. When you walk in, it is filled to the brim with all things desserts and pan de sal for individual sale. YUM! You can also order coffee and espresso drinks to go. The staff is excellent! Super nice and friendly and great service.
This place is a total win for 21st St and 2nd Ave! I will definitely be returning, many, many times. -

If you're looking for a very low key, yet delicious brunch or lunch spot this is your place. My husband and I were literally the only people in the place for a sit-down lunch on a Sunday - however, many people came in to get things to go. The pan de sals are a must-order - we tried the chicken and the corned beef - both excellent choices! The bread is incredible and almost melts in your mouth and two sandwiches are perfectly filling for lunch.
The best bang for your buck is one of their brunch specials - 2 pan de sals, a lovely bowl of fruit covered in chocolate and whipped cream and coffee - all for under $10. I feel like we've uncovered a hidden gem for the time being, but it won't be long before everyone else finds it out :) -

Cute little bakery that does not live up to it's full potential. The owners and their friends/family are always there sitting at a table which makes me feel like i'm invading their living room, since the place is a little small. Despite their presence, the service is painstakingly slow. 10 minutes to get an ice coffee to go. And then he told me there were no more lids. I said fine because I didn't realize how important a lid was until I spilled it all over myself right after I left. The coffee us very flat and medicare. At least it's not burnt. The pan de sal (rolls) are amazing and I highly recommend. The cupcakes/cakes/pastries look great but I have no idea what they are since there is either no label or the label is in Philipino. (what is an "ume" cupcake?!) I really wanted a great cafe in this neighborhood, but this place had yet to live up to it's potential. The food I've had was delicious, tho. If love some more vegetarian options. The owners need to market this place more to their customers and not just their family. I keep coming back because I live the pan de sal and I hope that the place will improve. It's a cute place, but not one that I get excited to go to.

My favorite local coffee and pastry joint. This is right across the street from the boyfriend's and needless to say, we probably stop in at least six times a week. They serve Lavazza coffee here (my favorite) and have a nice selection of fresh pastries which are baked daily. I am not a huge sweets fanatic, I'm much more of a savory girl. However, I like that their desserts are not over the top and diabetes inducing. Give the Ham & Cheese or the Strawberry croissant a try. They are incredibly light, with a flaky crust. This, paired with a cup of their coffee makes for a perfect weekend breakfast when I'm not in the mood to sit down for brunch.

Now they have wifi set up as well (with password, which is their phone number)! Woohoo!! And 6 different types of tiny Baklava (75cents each), which I am yet to try. Corn beef pan de sal is as good as ever.
By the way why does this place has $$$$ instead of $? Its price range is very very reasonable.. (brunch-less-than-$10 should have only one dollar sign!) Dear Yelp, how do we fix this?1 Previous Review: Show all »

PECK SLIP, NY
It was nice to see Filipino owned food business in the mainstream, especially in Manhattan. So when we entered Pan De Sal and saw the nice interior, we had high expectations.
But......we were the only customers but the old woman who seems to run the place just waved us to a table without a word of welcome. There were 4 pan de sal spreads and we ordered one of each. After about 5 minutes we were told thee was no sardines so we ordered 2 adobo. After another 5 minutes we were told there was no pâté spread so we asked to 2 corned beef pan de sal.
In other restaurants they usually have a small board that shows what is out of stock, or the servers tell the customers beforehand.
Both adobo and corned need were a let down. Bland.
We had to ask a couple of times for coffee refill. The coffee was flat.
We had to go to the counter to ask for our bill because the server was nowhere to be found.
What a disappointment. Nice looking place but service level is a 3 out of 10. Same for the food. -

This is now my favorite neighborhood cafe and coffee place. The owner is super cool, and the staff are very sweet and accommodating. I stop in sometimes more than once a day for their delicious coffee, or a snack after the gym. They've made a lot of progress since opening, now providing impressive soy lattes. I would take the advice of the latest reviews. Definitely worth checking out. Love this place!

Finally, a place where I can get the ORIGINAL pandesal of the old days in Manila - crispy outside and soft inside. Not the yellow ones everyone carries (they have them too). I will try their sans-rival next which they say is made with real butter. I don't know why all other competitors make it with margarine or a mixture of margarine and butter. Will post this weekend what I think.

I was VERY excited when this place opened as I live in the hood and we really need something like this! Really fresh baked goods. My only annoyance is the service. The gals they have working are not so bright or they are just so new that no one really knows what they are doing. This morning I asked for a butter croissant to go. I went to work and they actually cut up the already buttered croissant and added so much more butter to it that I had to throw it away. I also stood in front of the register for a few min before anyone came to take my order. There were 3 people behind the counter. Actaully this happens almost everytime I go in there and the place is always empty. Mr. owner, if you are reading this, your place has so much potential. Please train your staff!

This place just opened up, and yet the quality and consistency is superb. Some of the best cinnamon buns I've had in a long time: soft and chewy on the inside, thin crispy crunch on the outside and packed with flavor. I've tried the pies, the pineapple custard pastry and their iced teas over several days, and they were all very good. The greatest thing about this place for me is that their pastries have the perfect sweetness to them. This does feel more like european style baking than american style. And the proverbial icing on the cake is that they create french/filipino fusion pastries, so it's a great place to try some different types of pastries too, like their pan de sal, which has an understated taste, but in a very nice and subtle way. I never tried pan de sal before, but I definitely like their version.

This is a great place to go to for different treats and goodies. I tried several cupcakes from here and they are absolutely yummy. They also have other goodies like cheesecakes, tarts, and other exotic cakes. The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable and patiently explained what all the treats were. The decor inside is also really nice and gives a cozy vibe as soon as you walk in. Will definitely be back for more treats!

What a wonderful respite. An alluring display of sweets entice you and when you enter you feel you have found Shangri la. An exquisitely hand painted mural greets you. On closer inspection you discover that it's painted by famous New York artist Russ Elliott. What a great find to escape and enjoy a coffee and a sweet to just relax. I definitely plan to return and bring my friends as a surprise. There's nothing like this in Manhattan. How unique!

Stumbled upon Pan De Sal in our neighborhood and couldn't be happier to have found this delicious neighborhood gem. My boyfriend loves Filipino cuisine and was so happy to find such authentic food at such great prices. He had the Pan De Sal with corn beef and then quickly placed a 2nd order.....it was just that good! I had the adobo and also found myself cleaning my plate. The owner is a very kind man and the great conversation only added to the wonderful experience. We will definitely be back!

What an amazing find we happened on two afternoons ago. Desserts, cakes, and pasteries looked delicious. We ordered a chocolate criossant to share & it was the best we've had outside of France. Can't wait to go back!
