Review from Dana D.

I have occasionally swung in here to pick up a few groceries when I feel like indulging in their selection of excellent bread and cheeses. However, Pan Chancho's main draw for me is summer brunch.
My sole indoor dining experience here was a bit cramped so I wait until the first sign of warm Kingston sunshine and head for the patio. I always have to line up. My bill is always just slightly higher than I like to see it. It is always worth it.
The sun-speckled patio is relaxed yet lively, tucked inside a wooden fence and blooming greenery.
Everything is delicious, but The Weekender is perfect, and the best bang for your buck : Two eggs cooked to slippery perfection on a flaky moist croissante with bacon, chives and old cheddar. A couple of times I have swapped the bacon for chorizo; my creativity was rewarded. Dayum das da good stuff!
Bring your grandparents, your special someone, or wrestle your hungover roommates into something a step above sweatpants, and enjoy what brunch is meant to be. -

I was expecting a lot more, looking from the outside. It's formidable . huge selection floor to ceiling high of baked goods, to deli, to salads, ready made sandwiches and condiments.
We were on the go so we decided to grab a couple of baked goods. .
decided on a Chocolate Brioche and a Cheese and caramelized onion focaccia
Brioche too buttery salty.. and the cheese and onion focaccia was good but not spectacular. kind of disappointed it wasn't better. i had a lot better from franchise bakers ie. michel's bakery cafe at the malls.
Goods were pricey imho $3 for brioche and focaccia was $4.50 -

Front-of-house Bakery/Market is a warm welcome. The colors and selections enough to amaze the first time uninitiated. I was however hunger for a Meal rather than take-away, so I passed the narrow path into the back Dining space and even beyond that was a back Patio. The environment is suiting of a laid-back Brunch spot.
French Toast with Apple Butter Crème Fraîche($10.50) -
Apple Cider Bread and Maple Syrup
The ingredients are all fresh house-made and has character unlike any Franchise Brunches. Very much appreciated for the price paid however I wasn't quite enjoying this French Toast as much as I was hoping for. I liberally doused as much Maple Syrup on for some flavour on a bland but healthy Meal.
The Apple Cider Bread was ever so lightly Egg-soaked that I barely notice it as a French Toast. Btw I'm not a huge Bread fan, so I rather personally want it to have soaked in more farm fresh Eggs. The Apple Butter Crème Fraîche is similar to Apple Sauce mixed with Crème Fraîche.
I appreciate the use of Cloth Napkins over disposable Paper Napkins. It really rounds out the whole classic Brunch relax over a cup of Coffee/Tea style. Maybe I should have went for a dish with more impact more umph. I'm probably not the usual Customer base anyways, so take this review with your choice of Salt grains. -

3 Stars for the dining experience
4 Stars for the bakery and store
3.5 Stars Total
Pan Chancho is a representation of the quality that some small town residents love to have when they're away from the choices in a big city. This place has got it all, amazing pastries, pies and cakes, great selection of fresh bread (sourdough to ciabatta, persian flatbread to baguettes, etc, etc) a formidable selection of good cheeses and a tasty array of prepared salads and foods.
I can't say much about the dining experience however. Albeit we were a large group of 10 that came it at the end of brunch and were told it would be a long wait - we basically waited almost an hour for a group of 8 to leave even though we saw at least 6 or 7 couples and smaller groups get seated before us.
The food sounded great on the menu and looked decent in presentation but ultimately it was lacking that bit of quality that would make this place amazing. The french toast was very normal, the egg plates were simply put together and the flavours were all mellow. Nothing really stood out.
I have to say though that the service was great and they know how to accomodate their patrons. While we were getting increasingly aggitated with the waiting, we were offered cookies and as soon as we were seated the staff was aware of our situation and apologetic.
Overall a great place with a few missteps but I might find myself back here next time I visit Kingston. -

I love bakeries! I love fresh bread! You could smell the bread from a mile away. We liked this place so much that we abandoned our plans to eat at a restaurant and decided to just load up on bread, spreads, meats and cheeses from this place and have a picnic at home.
Yes it's expensive, but I'm on vacation, so whatever...Listed in: My Trip to Canada

I went here for brunch - delicious. The bread was amazingly fresh, ingredients were super high quality and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals.
They didn't get 5 stars partially because when we were paying they mentioned that if we wanted to pay by amex we'd have to go to the front and use a debit machine... part of the point of paying by credit card is that you don't have to get out of your seat. -

Like most places with foreign names and a bakery set up, Pan Chancho is dangerously delicious (and carb filled) and expensive. If you're a student and not independently wealthy I'd recommend waiting until the parents come up for a visit before heading out here. Either that or be prepared to spoil yourself a bit.
It gets pretty busy on the weekends as its a favorite brunch spot. Last time I went here, I sat in the little courtyard/patio and had the french toast (highly recommend). Menu has a lot of the typical brunch like items on there but all with a little gourmet-esque twist. Good eats for sure.
The take out set up is also delicious. They have lots of different options from pre-prepared sandwiches and tapas (think grape leaves, cheese, olives etc etc) to cart off. Once again, all the items I sampled were spot on (although spendy). -

Recent updates to their brunch menu have won me back a little. Westerner, eggs, bacon and cheese on a crossiant and their French toast with apple butter creme fraiche. Delicious. As always, a cozy warm atmosphere. Come before 11AM on weekends or else you'll be waiting. Reservations make things easier. My favorite place to brunch now.

Kingston, ON
I just love this place. It's a landmark of Kingston. It's location and setting make it just perfect for any meal year round. it's a pity though that the menu has been less colorful lately. Not only they have a great bakery, but the dishes are absolutely fabulous and same goes for desserts and coffee. My favorite dish the Cumin Lamp Pita. The Meaty-Meat Burger is not to be missed, neither.
