I d/l the new-not-so-crappy yelp version on Blackberry (yeah please don't say, I know Blackberry apps suck!). Anyway it was good enough to direct us toward a really cheap place with a pretty decent lunch. Actually a Potage Parmentier with Bacon and a Rosebif sandwich and a Sablé with chocolate chunk. 10:20$. It's quite big with a kind of Bistro-Cafeteria feeling to it but they sell bread and amazing decent size meal. The bread is good, the soup was really ok and the service kind and fast. Well rounded team of staff that's used to lot of people. Located in Vieux Quebec, it's quite touristy but you see it's a real local place too.

Best Croissant in town!

This place has fantastic croissants... the kind you fine in Europe!
The are baked fresh daily, you can see them being taken out of the ovens, which are located in the front of the store. Their coffee is also quite good.
I went back for dinner and had the grilled veggie sandwich on Paillard bread, which was very good also. The veggies were done just right (not soggy), and the bread of course (which is their claim to fame) was wonderful. -

Ok. Seriously???? This place is a dream. Fresh pastries, excellent ingredients, and completely inexpensive!!!
This could be the best croissant I have ever eaten.
Just go here, true French bakery experience. -
Review from Scott O.
Really good, dare I say great? No. I daren't (if that's a word).
We enjoyed lunch, but it didn't blow our socks off.
Go here for a solid experience if you're losing faith in Quebec City. -
Review from Kathleen H.
I had a great roast beef with horseradish cream here. Very tasty - arugula, tomato, good aged, rare roast beef, spicy red onions, delicious bread.
Now supposedly, this bakery won some award as "best bakery in North America" from somebody, at some time. . . or so said the tour guide. I got pushed on the tide of the crowd in this place right past the bakery goods, as it was Lunch Time, and very crowded. Well. . . maybe on the way out.
They did a good job catering to the children in line with no tastebuds who wanted, basically, to eat their food without any actual food in it. . .or flavor.
There was some minor eye rolling of the staff, (understandably, to my way of thinking) but they were quite efficient, polite, and competent. They did quite an amazing job getting the huge line of people fed quite quickly, actually.
This is not a lovely intimate cafe. Go elsewhere to nurse your cappuccino. It feels like a cafeteria, but the food choices are significantly better than that. A friend had a salad with duck. Again. They like duck here, which makes me like them. Quack!
High ceilings, bright, white, clean. Eat.
I want those croissants. . . .Whooooooooosh. . . .pushed right out by the crowd of children I came in with. I'll be back to try the baked goods on my next trip to Quebec City, and come at a Not Lunch Time hour so that I don't feel like sheep in a chute.
mmmm. That roast beef sandwich was good. -
Review from Brian S.
Consistently delightful, and a no-brainer for lunch or inexpensive dinner. The Turkey BLT was great. Grilled Vegetable Panini was the best the spouse has ever had. Son loved the soup. The macaroons are to die for. The vast selection of ice creams was nearly overwhelming. A slam-dunk value in this potentially pricey town.
With the skillful branding, restaurant design and management, I remain surprised Paillard is not a franchise (but then again, neither is kin deli Zingerman's in my home town of Ann Arbor, MI - one of Paillard's principals hails from Michigan, and so this fact couldn't possibly be lost on her).
Just go. No regrets. Tasty! -
Review from Sharon K.
Perfect place for brunch or lunch! Paillard has charm, is decently priced, and has really good sandwiches. I got the grilled veggie sandwich on Paillard bread. I have to say the bread was one of the best I've ever tasted. I love anything that is crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. My carb-loving friends always get surprised when I tell them I sometimes get tired of bread in my meals (sandwiches, burgers, etc), but I ate every last bit of that bread. The grilled veggies were perfectly cooked, and they weren't too limp or undercooked. I usually don't get veggie sandwiches, but I really liked this one. There were an assortment of interesting drinks that I've never seen in the states, and I decided on a peach spritzer. I wish they sold it down here because it wasn't overly sweet and artificial. My friend also really liked the coffee, and he's a pretty picky foodie so that's saying something.
I wish I had tried the pastries, especially the macarons. If I ever come back to Quebec City, I will definitely revisit this place. -
Review from Lulu T.
This place is great for a quick bite. We ordered the roast beef and grilled veggie sandwich. Both were served on fantastic bread and tasted great. The price is also very reasonable.
The restaurant also has a large pastry and gelato selection - unfortunately we didn't get to try it because we were stuffed with sandwiches :) -
Review from Joe J.
A lovely space with decent pastries. It is horribly marred by appalling service and being understaffed. There appears to be only one or two people who are trained and a half dozen who have no clue. Lines of customers wait impatiently watching the bedlam. I almost went behind the counter to make my own macchiato and did go behind the counter to get hot water for my wife's tea.
The tarts and macarons are actually quite decent once you calm down enough to enjoy them. The place does seem to appeal to people with infinite time, as there are many students on laptops (nursing a coffee) at several communal tables. -
Review from Brandon W.
Amazing croissants. The croissants were soft and buttery on the inside and flaky and lightly crispy on the outside. The taste was buttery and just a hint of sweetness. We came in for a quick bite and ended up buying six additional croissants.
We are coming back tomorrow to have croissants for breakfast. -
Review from Bijan V.
I don't know what to say about this place. Can quite possibly be summed up as the best place to grab some food while touristing around in old Quebec.
Having great desserts/pastries, homemade gelatos, beer and sandwiches, soups, etc - this is the best place to grab some food if you don't want to sit down at a restaurant and spend a lot money per person.
If you're deciding between the sandwiches, I'd say the chicken was by far the best, followed by the vegetable and then the beef. Not to say they are any bad but just my preference cuz I kept going back for more! The beef sandwich has caramelized onions and blue cheese which give it a great taste that goes with a nice pint of beer!
Everything is freshly made here and the food is really good! It's no wonder why there's always people there from early in the morning till late at night! -
Review from Lorraine L.
Paillard was our first stop in Quebec City after our train ride from Montreal on recommendation of our Frommer's guide. This place is massive. It's kind of cafeteria style, where they have separate stations for the boulangerie, pastries and desserts, and full meals. Everything looked very fresh.
I had the ham and cheese croissant, and the croissant was very light and flaky (not too buttery) and huge. The ham was delicious, flavorful and hand-carved. We also came back before we left Quebec City to pick up a few small breads for the train ride back to Montreal. All the bread was deliciously crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside.
I had the impression that it might be a chain, but they seem to be independently run. Good spot for a quick lunch or to grab a quick treat! -
Review from Pam J.
Not as good as Baguette et Cie (see my other review) but still pretty good. Service at Baguette et Cie a bit better. I will return to Bagette et Cie but probably not Paillard.

Great pastries as already reviewed by others. Nice sandwiches too.
Ambiance average, feels very chain-like, no real atmosphere. But great for stopping by during touristic activities! -
Review from M. C. M.
Delicious sandwiches.
Weak soup.
No sides offered or included, which makes prices a little to high for what you get.
Long-ish line at lunch time.
Bathrooms are up 3 flights of stairs. -
Review from Deanna D.
This is good spot to grab a quick lunch. The space is bright, modern, and clean with a decent amount of seating.
We ordered the Asian Chicken Salad & Beef Bistro Sandwich--- Both were good but nothing special. However their homemade gelato was fantastic!! They had a great selection of flavors and we split a 5 flavor sampler that included tiramisu, panna cotta, pistachio, and some others all of which delicious!!! They also had a huge assortment of pretty pastries and beautiful croissants. I will be back for the gelato! -
Review from H S.
I was at this place for a coffee and pastry over the July long weekend and found it to be nice and spacious. They had long tables that seemed ideal for large groups.
We were a group of 4 and a baby and like many families everyone has there own preferenace, some want tea, others want coffee, Capuchino. Kids want pasteries etc, etc.
I found ordering a bit chaotic as they had 2 counters you have to figure out whet you want and me in the appropriate line. For e.g. COFFEE was in the first counter but Latte was on the second counter. Pastries were one the first counter but Sandwiches were on the second.
It was crowded and long line, they should better organize. The pasteries and coffee was nice. -
Review from Gretchen N.
I can only speak for the macaroons, but they are fantastic! My husband and I are halfway through a sampler if 6 flavors and they are all great. I also liked the atmosphere and the vibe.

Spent three days in Quebec City this week and looked forward each day to breakfast at Paillard. Freshly baked goodies abound in this new york style interior old city cafe. Coffee is better than i expected. Sandwiches are freshly made. They may not be massive, but the price isn't either! The staff are very friendly and the experience memorable. Looking forward to going back!

Gave it three stars mainly for value. Low prices and decent fare. Croissant was very flaky and buttery. Had the chicken with spicy mayo and Dijon. Pam had the ham and cheese croissant.

Great sandwiches. Flavorful and a quick place to pick up lunch. Great atmosphere. They also have pastries. Nice lighting (very bright which I like)

My husband and I took refuge from the rain in this French meets New York style bakery and I have to say that it was the most pleasant experience ever... the croissants have to be some of the best I've tasted and being from Montreal, that says a great deal. Buttery, flakey and a little sweet - simply divine if you ask me. My husband had a Cafe au Lait and a chocolatine and he just loved them.
If you go to Quebec City and want great food with a little Musette playing accordionist - cool without the kitsch, you must stop here. I loved it so much I bought two Paillard Cafe au Lait bowls so that we can pretend we're still there when we're at home! -
Review from Atlas M.
This bakery is very popular - with tourist and locals alike - and it's in all the guidebooks. But...it's just OK when it comes to break and pastries (I didn't try the sandwiches). You can find better bread and pastries at other bakeries and grocery stores close by.

If you're looking for a good, solid place for lunch or breakfast, go to Paillard. Had a delicious Thai chicken sandwich one day and the Paillard salad another.

Best croissant in town.
Baguette with an extra crispy crust and soft on the inside. There are so many bakeries in the city that suck at this. I'm a fan of their sourdough baguette!
Macarons are also pretty good. Hazelnut is my favorite. -
Review from matt g.
Good... but it is the Panera Bread of Quebec (although I'm not sure if it is actually a chain or not). If you are looking for something "local" this is not the place, but the croissants were great (light and flaky), lunch looked interesting and they also serve wine and beer.

Review from Kaylan S.
ahh just loverly!
it gets 4.6 stars!
....the pastries are divine. buttery, flakey, and perrrrfect for tea-dunking. i can not speak to their cakes or sandos, and sadly did not take the opportunity to eat any macarons ;(
their shelves are lined with fantastic pantry goods such as mint infused honey, jams and jellies, sauces and olive oils.
the atmosphere is clean, open and bright. however, i did get a strong sense of corporate-ness and the cookie-cutter business model versus the quaint, small French bakery that i was so hopefully anticipating. i guess even small, heavily-European influenced cities must stamp out the old mom&pop shops and go with what works for the bottom-line and to keep up with demand. i foresee this place being replicated into airports, museums, etc etc.
moral of the story: its a great place to grab a quick pastry or meal, or to order a unique cake-log or giant tower of macarons for a special occasion! -
Review from Joel S.
I don't think sandwich shops or pastries get much better than this, at least not at the very reasonable prices here. Absolutely delicious fresh pastries, and terrific sandwiches. Ambience is just a big, IKEA-looking space with lots of seating. Great place to get a picnic lunch before biking or visiting the Plains of Abraham for the day.

Paillard is great if you're looking for a quick croissant or sandwich but it lacks the soul of a small café. The food is good and the cafeteria style service is excellent but if you're looking for a quaint café, this isn't it.

Nirvana. Great coffee, great baked goods, great ambience (if you like the cavernous, slightly antiseptic French bakery look). Nice & big, so you should be able to snag a place on the long communal table. My only gripe is that half the time when I went in, it was packed!

Kind of a cafeteria type setting, but the croissants and pastries were all delicious! If the weather is nice, pick up some baked treats to go!

Yummy lunch spot it a food court format... One counter for sandwiches, soups, etc., one for ice cream, one for pastries/dessert. Long communal tables as well as a few café tables outside. The employees all were happy to speak english. Our family ordered hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, and soups. All of them were inventive and delicious. Paillard is several big notches above Subway. Plus, you can get a beer with your lunch, they have 3 on tap.

Perfect spot for a light meal. The sandwiches and pastries are amazing. The creme brulée had an amazing texture.
