My bf took me here for an anniversary dinner and I realized when we were taken to the back room, I had never dined in the large main area before. I guess I've usually had drinks and food in the lounge. I have to say the lounge exudes a certain sexiness that the main dining room doesn't but no matter, it was the company that mattered the most. :)
Sushi, sea bass, dessert all were really yummy as usual. Prices are a tad higher but it's definitely worth it. Service was excellent and our waiter was very well versed in the sake department. -

Great location, awesome decor, great view, great service. Why did it get a two star from me?
Because the sushi rolls were horrible. I was so disappointed it hurt. They tasted like the prepacked sushi rolls you get at SAFEWAY. And they didnt have the great Japanese whiskey Yamazaki, even though it was in the drink menu.
If you're going to spend the money here you expect to spend in a place like this, you just expect more. Maybe if you do decide to come here, hopefully the sashimi is better.
Hit it over rated my friends. -

A buddy took me here and it was ridiculously expensive so big ups to Travis for being a homie! The atmosphere of this place was pretty cool. Large central sake bars with tables all around it in a busy atmosphere. The sake list was impressive and we drank the best sake I have ever had.
The fist itself was pretty hit or miss. I had some pieces of toro that were pretty fishy tasting some that were tough and some that were good. The yellowtail was pretty bad but the uni was good. My buddy ordered the Rib-eye which was delicious, tons of flavor packed into that thing.
At the end of the day this place is fun for the atmosphere and the food would be okay if it wasn't ridiculously expensive. Overall it just doesn't provide the bang for its buck. As someone else mentioned if you are on an expense account why the hell not otherwise there are a ton of better sushi places in the city at a fraction of the cost. -

I thought this place was slick. We ordered couple of appetizers and sushi. Food was tasty and well presented. the server was very helpful in his description of different dishes. Cool ambiance. It was a pain to find a street parking, after circling around a few blocks and not finding any parking we ended up using their valley service. But it did not spoil our night. I would definitely come back to this restaurant.

I avoided this place for a while because it seemed over-hyped to me and I think I saw their sushi being sold at Costco once. Nevertheless, I heard good things about it and a buddy of mine from Boston was visiting and I figured anywhere I took him in SF would be better than the sushi in Boston. So I took him to Ozumo and I was pretty impressed. We sat in the back and had a view of the Bay Bridge which made it a bromantic meal.
They have awesome flights of sake, super fresh fish, nice presentation, and the people watching wasn't bad either. The only downside was that my wallet wasn't very happy at the end of the night but she'll forgive me. -

We are regulars as they have amazing sushi! I'm all about the whole experience.... So I must sit at the front part of restaurant near the bar for the vibe as the back of the restaurant has what I call 'cafeteria' lighting!

If everything on the menu was marked down about $5 - $10, I would give Ozumo more stars. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying more for food, but quality has to always match the price. The food is good here, but not worth the prices you're paying. But I guess this is on the Embarcadero in the SOMA, so what do you expect?
Last night my boyfriend and I ended up at Ozumo. We tried going to Izakaya Sozai (I know, totally in a different area) but after finding out that their wait was at least an hour and half, we said screw it.. And drove back home and walked out to the Embarcadero. We decided on Ozumo since we were still in the mood for Japanese.
The one great thing about this restaurant is the decor. When we were first waiting in the lounge for a table, I thought, "oh.. just another typical swanky/contemporary city spot." But once you walk in the restaurant, the vibe completely changes. The inside of the restaurant is reminiscent of a traditional Japanese restaurant, just modernized up (lots of light colored wood, the style of the furniture, etc). I also enjoyed the view of their Sake display - gorgeous display of Sake bottles and the inside of the display case is a private dining room! Hmms, I might want to come back in a group just to sit in that room, heh. When I went to the bathroom, I noticed they have sushi boat style seating in the back - another thing I thought was cool. This restaurant has versatile yet blending rooms.
Anyways, on to the food... For dinner, we had:
- Dohyo: (Spicy Tuna Tatare w/chips) This dish was ok - our server suggested it as her favorite appetizer but I thought it tasted like every other Tuna Tartare I ever had. eh.
- Tontoro: (braised Kurobuta pork jowels) absolutely delish - this was my favorite dish here along with the Gindara. The fat was yuhhhhhmy - definitely recommend this dish if you visit.
- Gindara: (Black cod) very good dish - the fat on the fish was so delicious, sauce was good, and cooked perfectly - definitely recommend ordering this dish alongside Tontoro.
- Shacho Roll: (Maine Lobster roll) this roll was creative and good, but I thought it was a bit overpriced - the roll wasn't all that amazing, just good.
- Spicy Tuna Nigiri: disappointing - rice was not fresh at all, and spicy tuna wasn't that tasty
- Big Eye Tuna Sashimi: also disappointing - texture was kind of weird, was very gelatinous and okay tasting. i think it would have been better if they sliced it a little thinner.
Overall, beautiful setting and some food options are great while others I would skip. From what we tried, I would definitely go with their cooked food options over their sushi - I rather go to a hole in the wall sushi joint that serves up fresh, great tasting sushi. Would I return? Yeah, maybe for the environment and the good food options - would be a nice place to take friends out for special occasions - just order the right dishes. Oh, lastly... I had their Shi-Mitsu drink - Shishito peppers w/ginger - delish! (also a bit overpriced, but nonetheless delish and creatively handcrafted)Comment from Amanda P. of Ozumo 2/6/2012

This is a trendy and fun expense account Japanese restaurants. The atmosphere is great with a huge central sushi bar that is the focal point of the room.
Menu is extensive and "Nobu esque" but what keeps me from a higher rating is quite frankly the so so sushi at someone steep prices. We had a ton of rolls, and the toro was seriously unedible. Likewise, the spider roll was only so so. Desserts were tasty. If you are looking for fun atmosphere and a good drink selection, Ozumo is a fine choice. But I wouldn't pick it for the food. -

Best sushi, hands down! The tuna tartare app is amazing. In fact, it was hard to share. The lobster roll was delicious and paired nicely with Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc. If I lived here, I would definitely be broke because it is expensive, but totally worth it. Oh, and make sure you have a great concierge or make reservations well in advance because in order for us to get a table, we had to promise to be out of there by 7pm (and they reminded us of that). To sum it up, it's a fantastic place that you must try.

I think you are paying for ambiance here but the service is excellent. I liked all the sake bottles lined up from the ground to the ceiling in the middle entryway. Reminded me of the lanterns at the temples in Tokyo during New Year's.
The black cod was pretty good (has creamier sauce than Ame) and their hamachi appetizer with avocado and ponzu sauce is like the one at Gochi. We had one of the rolls - don't remember what it was but the peanut sauce that came with it was original (had the texture of hoisin sauce more than the peanut sauce that you normally see at shabu or Thai food).
This place is pretty busy so get here early or wait for a late dinner. You can avoid paying valet if you are lucky enough to find parking on Mission. Also, since none of the servers are Asian, if you are not articulate enough, they will just give you the most common thing (e.g. we ordered the Echigo beer and instead, the server said she heard Ichiban). (-___-) -

The freshest sushi I have EVER had. And I've had a lot. The rolls are amazing (tho they are TINY) and the Kobe beef was like butter.
Only complaint is that I think our server forgot to order out main douse, as it took 90 minutes after our appetizers came out to get it. He blamed it on the kitchen, but after serving for six years, i could tell it was his fault. Dude, just apologize and own your mistake. Food was excellent, service was meh. -

I've been to Ozuma three times now. The first time was a couple of years ago and I was very impressed. Ozuma is a beautiful restaurant, with a great atmosphere. Definitely a place to go for special occasions. There's a view of the Bay Bridge, which looks very cool after dark.
The sushi was extraordinary, and the service was excellent every time. Ozuma takes great care in presentation, which enhances the overall experience. They have a VERY extensive sake menu, and they always take the time to explain the sake to me and help me find a sake that matches my tastes.
While the wait staff is pleasant, its always a bit uncomfortable talking to the host/hostess, especially if you do not have a reservation. The first time we went, we felt uncomfortable, as the hostess made us feel like we should had not have come without a reservation. However, we were seated quickly and the wait staff made us feel welcome. The second time we went, we had a reservation and the hostess still made us feel a bit uncomfortable, probably because they had just opened. The manager, however, was at the host station and asked us if we wouldn't mind sitting at the lounge for a few minutes while we waited to be seated, since they didn't have our table quite ready yet. The drinks were excellent, and we were seated within 5 minutes.
Overall, I highly recommend Ozuma if you want a fine dining sushi experience and love to try new sakes! -

Over a thousand reviews!?! Guess I'll keep it short and sweet.
Have friends flying into town on Friday night who want to go out and need to eat but after getting in from SFO and making themselves pretty its almost 10? Ozumo is my go to spot to get everyone fed, feeling frisky and ready to rage despite the jet lag.
Upscale sushi place with full bar and extensive sake list. More of a lounge type vibe than a restaurant. Upfront is the bar where its a lil' louder and good for a party of two. In the back its a perfectly good spot for friends coming into town where you can grab a table, actually hear each other speak, eat, drink and be merry. They serve food until at least 11 on fridays and the sake bar is open even later(Careful with the sake those nights can lead to war between Japan and Colombia(inside joke)). Sushi is high grade and you do pay for it but thats what you come to Ozumo for.Comment from Amanda P. of Ozumo 1/24/2012

Japanese people believe that we eat food with five senses.Because of that, Japanese food does not only taste good but is also visually appealing. Japanese chefs like to express seasons with food-in Spring food resembles a cherry blossom for instance.
I had a full Japanese cuisine experience at Ozumo-this is where food meets Zen on a daily basis. Appropriately enough, the restaurant itself was inspired by a Zen garden. I should also mention that this was the best Japanese food I had in San Francisco so far. I can't wait to go back.Comment from Amanda P. of Ozumo 1/25/2012

Review from Travis L.
Went here for my Dad's birthday dinner, and we were all quite satisfied after our meal. What really made Ozumo wonderful was the attention they paid to each dish, in which the garnishes work well to make the dishes attractive and to add unique texture and flavor. I was particularly taken by the tuna tartare with avocado and caviar, which played with your palate in a way that I've never quite experienced in Asian style cuisine. The tempura crostini really did it for me, because I was tasting three different textures simultaneously with three different flavors.
The Futaro (Wagyu, eggplant, cucumber, and sprouts) was also wonderful. Again the textures are playfully put together, and it's extremely attractive on the plate like a roll would look.
The actual roll that we had was the Shacho (Lobster, mango, jalapeno, caviar, rice paper) The fruit was really unexpected, and the lobster was the freshest I've had in sushi for a long while. The jalapeno is the fusion element, and I think it again excites the palate.
A fine example of their plating was the mixed tempura assortment, in which they fanned out somen and fried it to use as a centerpiece. Great use of the ingredient and great way to make tempura presentable.
However, I really think it was overpriced. There was an extremely large party sitting to our left, which killed any sort of ambiance. The servers seemed to be a little distracted, and I think they could have been more cordial and warm. I like the separation of bar and dining area, as to make the dining experience a little quieter and intimate. -

I've been to Ozumo several times. Service has always been great, no issues there.
Ambiance is lively, and the place is always busy.
Sushi is overrated and over priced for the quality. My opinion is your paying for the scene. If I was a drunkard I would probably like to get loaded at this place and then give it higher review because I don't know any better since it has the let's get a buzz on feel. The only reason I go there is when I have a date and she picks the restaruant, I have to suck it up and pretend it is great....
Actually what annoys me is white people doing a wai and they don't even understand the meaning of it and think they do....so friggin annoying
what is more annoying is people that eat rolls, only rolls and rave how great the sushi is. Annoying it is. -

A invitation for a birthday lunch in the Financial District is a great way to make me smile.
The openers: Valet parking is $15. The entryway is small - so if the hostess tells you there is a brief wait for your table, sit at the bar.
They started lunch with complimentary edamame and a wonderful chilled sesame spinach.
I picked one of my favorite bottles of Sake after some help and clarification with our server exactly what that was (I had to see the bottle label to know if it was or was not the one).
I enjoyed Hanabi as an entree. It is slices of hamachi with slices of avocado, warm ponzu and julienned daikon. The surprise for me was the garlic. It really was a nice finish for all the different subtle tastes.
I also had Yakisoba. I was torn between ramen and this. I decided to get this because I wasn't going to slup and risk splashes of soup on my dress. The smell of Bonito flakes overpowered the dish but I got over it. The beef was tender but too fatty once it started getting cold. The green beans were nice and crisp. It was good but I would not order this again. I regretted not getting ramen.
If you are on a budget- be careful, it was about $200 for a party of 2. The truth is more than half of that was for the delicious bottle of sake I ordered. We enjoyed every drop.
We were there lingering over our lunch and enjoying many many glasses of Sake for 3 hours. No one rushed us, which I appreciated.
Ozumo is a sexy, stylish venue with great service and good food. I would definitely visit again but for dinner next time.Listed in: Fabulous Finds in 2011, Leisurely Lunch

I'm reallllly mixed on this place.
Atmosphere - Cool and trendy looking sushi restaurant. DJ was spinning in the bar and it looked like a great happy hour spot. Great spot for a date or hanging with friends. The tables were set apart from the bar for a more formal and relaxed experience.
Service - This was a little disappointing. Our happy hour servers were very good and funny even though I confused one a little when I made a joke about a sharpie: It's a marker, not a knife... awkward. ANYWAY - Our dinner server was cordial and knew the menu very well and gave us great advice but he was completely cold, dry and impersonable. It was genuinely odd.
Food - When we came in the hostess told me one of her fiends had been to Nobu and preferred this place. Well.... I've been to Nobu in Vegas and NY as well as his original Matsuhisa many times and sadly, this wasn't at the same standard. That being said, it WAS very good. Their black cod fell apart in flaky awesomeness, their tuna tartar was good but the tuna was so cold that it felt like it might have not been completely thawed. The age dofu was good and most of the sushi was good as well. Overall it was a good but not great food experience. I'm not in SF that often but as much as I love sushi I'll probably try another place next time as the city is known for that cuisine.Comment from Amanda P. of Ozumo 1/21/2012

Ozumo occupies a pretty specific niche in my life. There is GREAT, much cheaper, sushi in this city -- Sushi Zone, for instance. But sometimes I want good sushi in a nice, upscale setting -- e.g., for an anniversary, or taking a parent out. On those occasions I come to Ozumo, and am always happy. I could eat my body weight in the salmon belly and uni sushi, and the chocolate cake & green tea ice-cream dessert is AMAZING.
Moreover, my firm had a work event here recently which I helped organise, and it was a great success. The staff were extremely nice and helpful, and the guests were very happy with the food and atmosphere. I recommend it for those purposes as well.Comment from Amanda P. of Ozumo 1/24/2012

lychee martini - one of the best lychee martinis i've tried

foie gras/uni/scallop thing over a steamed egg concoction - there was a lot going on in this dish but it was pretty good. i wasn't exactly sure how to eat it though
lobster mango roll - big pieces of lobster but i couldn't taste the mango :(
chocolate cake with green tea ice cream - nice way to end dinner

I took my parents to Ozumo to celebrate their wedding anniversary, and as expected, we had an excellent time!
The toro melted in our mouths, and was so richly decadent that it tasted like it had been soaked in clarified butter... of course, the extensive sake selection didn't hurt. ;) The sashimi was great, as was the kobe beef - been there a few times now, and I'd definitely go back!

this is my way over due review for ozumo... i seriously was not a fan of ozumo years back because their service sucked... but thank goodness i gave them another shot a year and a half ago... told you this review is over due... but since then, i think i came here like 10 times... i did indicate that i'm a fan now!
i am a big chirashi fan... because sometimes it's hard to decide what you want because you want everything! that is why the chirashi is the best decision... always get their daily selection of fresh fish and i dont even have to decide on which fish i want!
the chirashi is under their bento box section for lunch. it comes with edamame and daily veggie as a starter (currently i believe it's spinach with this yummy peanut sauce). The actual dish comes in two boxes. One box is the sushi rice with tobiko sprinkle on top with veggies on the side and the second box is the yummy yummy daily selection of fish! It is SO good... all the sashimi are super fresh and the pieces are good size! And one thing that i must say is: i love is that they give you TWO pieces of each fish vs one at other sushi places around the area. only down fall is that they chirashi doesn't include amaebi or uni... but you can always ask them to add on so that's cool!Comment from Amanda P. of Ozumo 2/6/2012

Went for a late dinner with a friend on an expense account (thank god). We had some beer and sake, a hamachi appetizer, the squid tempura, and some nigiri. The food was delicious, and the service attentive. But the portions are quite small, and not justified by the prices.
The bar looks fun, and I can imagine that they have a decent happy hour scene - the space is beautiful. If I ever need to impress someone, I might take them here. Otherwise, I'll stick to a more affordable spot.Comment from Amanda P. of Ozumo 12/9/2011

Had to try this spot out knowing how good it was in Los Angeles!
The black cod was as always light and delicious with its hint of miso. The sushi was fresh and I got my usual nigiri - tuna, unagi, yellowfish and salmon. Dessert of chocolate fondue fruit was definitely to my liking.
The ambiance is pretty good - the front was dimly lit with an intimate feel. The back was a little brighter but still had that sense of privacy that we all seek for a nice dinner with warm sake. And their sake menu is plentiful!
Lots of Japanese customers speaking their native tongue - has to be a pretty good sign right?
Great spot close to the bay bridge and Ferry Building.
Get parking at the valet or street parking if you're lucky.

This has got to be the most expensive sushi I've ever had and it was delicious! Fortunately, my company was getting the tab so we were able to enjoy a great selection of rolls and even desert during lunch.
It was easy to get a reservation and the staff was very helpful. I generally eat sushi closer to my area, the sunset, and the food is fairly similar but at a much lower price. What makes Ozumo worth trying again is their speciality rolls. They are inventive and very different from other sushi rolls. If you're gonna go with the standard selection of rolls, you'll do just fine at another restaurant with a lower price point.
None the less, it's delicious and worth a try if you have some extra cash to spend.Comment from Amanda P. of Ozumo 11/25/2011
