A good, dependable lunch-hour stand-by for us office drones. The lunch specials are very reasonably priced and are portioned to satisfy most appetites, free ice cream dessert if you remember to ask for it and the service is always quick and friendly. There's a regular menu and a lunch menu that offers daily specials plus bento boxes and mix-and-match combos. Food is tasty, hot when it's supposed to be and fresh. Some places micro-wave their tempura to help with speed of service but Oysi Oysi doesn't.
Bathrooms are clean, restaurant is tidy overall, and the lineup moves quickly so the majority of your hour isn't spent waiting then speed-eating to make it back to the office in time. If you're alone sushi bar seating is an option and is usually readily available. Various booths seat parties of two or more with a couple of large tables and a private room somewhere in the back.
Btw for those of you who prefer wild salmon they do offer this (for a minor extra charge) as well, you just have to request it. -

I returned to Oysi Oysi, this time for lunch. We just missed their mix and match lunch specials (sadface). They only last until 2pm.
Instead, I went with the special combo featuring sashimi, rice, prawn/yam tempura, and chicken teriyaki.
For nine bucks, I thought it was a pretty decent, solid meal as it was wholly filling on this rainy afternoon.1 Previous Review: Show all »

What a great spot! Service is always great! It's a bit pricey, but having in mind the location, it makes sence.
Loved the chef''s recommendation roll! Good sashimi and seafood pizza.
Ice cream on the house as a dessert. Yes please! -

It's ok. Not the best, but quick and close by for the DT lunch crowd. Lunch specials, no complaints here. Katsu don, nabeyaki udon and sashimi are all decent.
Crowded for lunch for the business crowd. -

Great spot. Really great for lunch, though it can get crowded.
Really friendly staff, and the owner is always there to make sure you're meal was good.
Great selection of rolls, and if you don't see it, they will make it for you, because they have an army of knowledgeable sushi chefs there. So just ask for it! -

The staff and owners here are very nice. It's a great spot for a no nonsense meal and priced appropriately. I've been coming here for years and enjoy my meals here. I took off one star because it's not the best sushi I've had in my life but those experiences are rare. (Tojo's and Sushi Sasabune in Honolulu) This place is an excellent place for a great convenient meal.

I don't know if today was an off day for this resto..
My family and I just got out of church & I was hungry and craving for sashimi.. So we headed to Oysi Oysi across the street (it was the nearest Japanese restaurant). I ordered the Eye-opener special and toro/salmon toro sashimi. The moment I tasted the Miso soup I knew that we should've just gone to nearby Kamei Royale. The soup tasted like something they washed dishes with. Beef teriyaki was bland and the gyoza tasted old.
The worst part was the sashimi I ordered came in last (after everything) and it was sliced so thin it almost looked like tataki. The salmon toro was cut out into tiny squares only held together by the thin membrane.. After taking a bite, I almost choked because the toro sashimi was still frozen. UGH!! Nothing I hate more than consuming frozen raw fish.
I would give this ONE star if the waitstaff wasn't so nice & gave everyone in my table a scoop of ice cream on the house (then again, my mom half-jokingly said our server must've noticed how upset we were with our orders..)
No, I dont think I'll ever step foot in this place again. -

I have experienced better! The service was ok, ambiance is dark, food wasn't that great. So so with the freshness and occasionally the taste is so so too. They have a wide selection of Japanese and some chinese foods. Careful because the photos on their menu are very deceiving. They're smaller than they look and to add rice is extra.
The worse experience I had and since then have no intentions of coming back is when I paid by credit card and wrote a flat amount incld tip, but when I received my bill they added some change (very close to a dollar) to it. I thought that it was just a small mistake, but apparently this isn't the first time this has happened. I would suggest you either pay in cash and count your change or just go else where.... The food's not that great anyway. -

This place is reliable, clean, and affordable. The service is friendly and attentive. The food is very good. No, it isn't the *best* Japanese food on earth, but it's relatively cheap and it's very fresh and flavorful.
I love the lemon chicken. Have you ever wanted to just smash your face into a plate of food because it's so satisfying? Yep. Lemon chicken.
The menu is huge. Seriously, the variety is amazing and there is something for everyone, no matter what your diet or budget is. Sushi, sashimi, appetizers, Chinese dishes, rice dishes, noodle dishes, soup, salad, and everything in between. They also have really good green tea ice cream. -

I've become a regular here, and Oysi Oysi is my go-to Sushi joint now.
Their lunch specials are by far their greatest value and the reason that I keep returning again and again and again. I've been told that prices will be going up, but so far they haven't (as of writing this review).
Service is always attentive, friendly, and kind. If anything, they are obsessed with topping up your tea (which is never a bad thing), and in making sure that you are having a good time. Wait times can sometimes be an issue, but they manage the tables well.
The restaurant is quite clean, and spacious. It has a lot of booths, which are perfect for small groups, and they have a large private dining area as well for larger groups. Great place for a business luncheon or meeting. A few flat screen TVs are mounted on the walls, and help distract you if you are waiting for your meal and are dining alone.
As some have mentioned here already, their sushi isn't the greatest in town, I think they actually excel with the wide variety of rolls that are on the menu, and their cooked dishes more than their sushi. Their udon in particular is quite good, as is the vegetable tempura. Sashimi has been hit and miss for me. Sometimes it is quite fresh, other times it hasn't been so great - but I've never had a problem bringing it up to the host/manager and resolving that.
I really respect the fact that I am treated like a regular, and never have to wait too long for a table when I am in a hurry. That, and solid, consistent service, and good quality food add to the consideration.
There are other sushi restaurants in town that are comparable in price, but it is the dining experience here that I think they have nailed, and it's what tips the scales for the five star rating. -

Oysi Oysi, the perfect lunch time spot when at work. The service is good, the food is good & they really like to top up your tea!
It's not the best, but they are always busy.. hustling & bustling. So all in all a good place, especially to newbies who don't know much about Japanese food. Take them here, they will love it.
The wonton soups are delish and they have big portions. -

I started to question the quality of Japanese dishes when I noticed there were typical Chinese dishes (e.g. deep fried chicken knuckles, stir fried yu choy, salt & pepper squid, etc) while reading the menu.
To be safe, I ordered katsu don instead of sushi or sashimi. To much of my surprise, despite the sauce was slightly on the salty side, my rice bowl was rather good. The breading on pork cutlet was crispy and the cutlet itself had good portions of fat. It also helped when the order was piping hot. I will probably return to try the sushi / sashimi next time. -

This place has great, freshly made tempura and good quality sushi. Excellent down town location and efficient (rather than 'friendly') staff. Good value too.

Oysi Oysi is my go to sushi house when I'm in Vancouver.
Walking in your are given a warm welcome from the Japanese staff. There are dark wood tables and chairs, light wood on the walls, large dark grey tiles on the floor, banquettes, and Japanese like family tables.
No matter how busy it gets the service never suffers. Always quick and pleasant and your tea cup stay filled without you noticing.
The food is always fresh and tasty. I wouldn't say the best sushi but they have great tasty options that always arrive quickly.
Overall, one of the best places to run to when craving sushi in the city. Just steps away from Robson but without the large price tag. -

If you ever need a little extra love in your life, then I recommend you stop by here. The staff were uber friendly and enthusiastic. They went out of their way to satisfy one of my friend's picky tastes and served us quickly and accurately. I ordered their lunch time special (Miso, california roll, tempura, rice, and chicken teriyaki) which turned out to be lots of food for only $9. I could barely walk of the restaurant!

Always good and at an affordable price!
Friendly staff as always, the only reason I am knocking away one star is because I came on a sunday night and didnt see Maru which always makes me happy and that it was just my girlfriend and I which we cannot eat quite as much different dishes as we'd like if we had a larger party.
Everything is pretty tasty and laid back. No need to come trendy or over the top. Just friendly people and good food. -

I have liked this place for many years, but today was my first visit in quite a while. I brought a relative here for a belated birthday lunch and she was very impressed, especially with the tuna sashimi. We also shared the rainbow roll, Oysi Oysi house special roll, and the eel tempura roll (with salmon and avocado inside and the tempura on top). I had to take the tempura off the latter but even still, it was extremely tasty. Overall I was once again impressed with the food, and even better, the prices are quite reasonable. Our server was also extremely friendly and helpful, and didn't rush us (even though it was a busy weekday lunch), which I really appreciated.

Oysi Oysi is definitely not Togo's and probably isn't even the best sushi you can find downtown but ultimately it is one of my favourite places to eat. I live right around the corner and probably come here about once a week. The gentleman that owns this place and his staff are wonderful: You're always welcomed warmly like an old friend, the wait staff are attentive and sweet and the kitchen fast. I've also been there a number of times and had them bring us out dishes of free ice cream at the end of our meal--just because. From the photos of friends' children and families near the cash to the cozy ambience and comfortable banquets this place is just as comfortable as being at home.
The food is solid and fresh, and the one time a friend wasn't crazy about the House Special roll she'd ordered (with lobster--I will admit this one can be dicey) they were very concerned with her uneaten portion and took it off the bill without her even having to ask or return it. I recommend the chicken teri roll and their tempura is always spot on. I've really never had anything here I didn't like, and we've probably ordered everything off their "Specials" sheet at one time or another. The last time I had a dish with garlic clams and they were awesome.
I really can't say anything bad about Oysi Oysi. Good, filling, fresh sushi at reasonable prices and they treat you just like you've gone home to Mom's house. -

As a huge vegetarian sushi lover I was not that impressed with the menu. The portions were small but quite delicious. The service was slow for only 5 tables in the place being used and 3 servers working. The agedashi tofu came with fish flakes on top which we had to send back but the new one that came was tasty. I'm glad this place is open on sundays as a lot of sushi restaurants near my house aren't. i'd say check it out for yourself as I will probably go back and see if it can redeem itself for 4 stars. The meat/fish dishes might be incredible but that I will never ever know.

Quality of food was great and pricepoint was excellent too!
Will visit here again! -

Pretty good! Lots of space and a good choice if you're downtown as it's across from the Shangri-La and near CTV. It's a little dark in there it felt. But the service, price, food were all... pretty good! Lot of stuff on the menu. Lots of space for a larger group. It's not the best sushi in Vancouver but definitely worth considering if you're in the area.

Although the seafood is fresh, but I'm not impress with other foods beside sashimi, also for the sushi fish is good but the rice is pretty poor.

I came here with a girlfriend tonight for some catching up and dinner and Oysi Oysi was a good spot when we both were craving sushi!
We weren't sure what to expect as we have never been to Oysi Oysi before but when we walked in, we were given a very friendly welcome from the staff.
The menu had a great variety of items- from sushi to special appetizers to sashimi and pan-fried noodles. We ordered the tuna and salmon sashimi (4 pieces of each), california roll, chopped scallop roll, and a chicken and fish roe spring roll (it had a complicated japanese name that I don't really remember). The sashimi was very fresh and tasty. Though it is definitely not the best sashimi I've had, it wasn't bad. The sushi was tasty as well- the chopped scallop roll was definitely my favourite! The scallop was fresh and sweet with just a hint of creamy mayonnaise. Unfortunately, I was not excited about the Chicken and fish roe spring roll...though the picture in the menu certainly looked appetizing! It consisted of chicken and fish roe wrapped in seaweed, battered, and then deep fried. However, the chicken was very very dry and tough and the fish roe was nowhere to be found...
The service was great! The waitresses were friendly, super attentive, and always made sure cups were full.
The meal came to about $30 for both of us. Considering the decent quality, its location in Downtown, and the fact that it satisfied my craving for sushi, Oysi Oysi was good enough! -

I love going to oysi oysi. They are friendly, the food is good, and after renovating the place a little, it looks a lot better (cleaner, mostly).
I, myself, am not much of a sushi person (raw fish is kinda yar yar) however, I've eaten with people who find it only to be mediocre. They do however have some interesting things on their menu. One of my favorites being their Ebi Cheese Sticks (mmm..*drool*).
Their prices are not unreasonable for their portions and quality. Also, food is generally served quickly (guaranteed to be quick when there aren't many people in the restaurant.
The only things about oysi oysi are that their wine and sake selection is very limited and when they are busy, it can take a long time to be seated. Then again, you can't expect them to have a large selection and many restaurants can make people wait for a long time to be seated.
Summary: good and friendly service, good food (mediocre sushi), and reasonable prices for good portions (not too big, not too small). You should try it! -

I still really like this place, but I think their california rolls would be better if they had cucumber in them. So in actuality, I'd like to give them 4.5 stars. I'm glad I had the chance to go here again! They also make great dynamite rolls! And were pretty quick with service. The sashimi was quite fresh. I love it!

Review from Gladys M.
This Japanese restaurant is at the heart of Vancouver downtown. Street parking is plenty and easy to find and it's close to the Duty Free shop on Alberni. The restaurant itself is just ok in terms of food. The set lunch is cheap but not that great. The set lunch with ramen is kind of bland and small. The California roll is fresh but just ok in terms of taste. The toro sushi is a steal for just $1.75 each and hamachi sushi is more expensive $2.50 because it's imported from Japan. Prawn tempura is only 99cent each which is cool but when they came, they are rather skinny prawns... Well, you get what you paid for basically. I will just go back for the toro sushi.

Best salmon sushi of my life. I am usually a devout yellowtail follower, but I was not super impressed with it here. The salmon and tuna sashimi more than made up for it though. With ice cream afterwards, what could be better?

Oysi Oysi... in Japanese it means "tastes good, tastes good" (more or less). In Vancouver apparently it means "tastes ok, not bad, yeah.." Lots of food. Good service. But the sushi was only fair in all honesty.
Oh, I liked the Goyza. Not amazing but pretty good. -

It's great to find a restaurant that satisfies all your different Japanese food cravings...especially one that is three blocks from where you live. It's my neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Always a pleasure eating here and my boyfriend and I have since become regulars. The owner likes to greet us with a "Welcome Home!" :-) The servers are super sweet and friendly and attentive to your needs, and the food is great. I recommend the Salmon Head app....we get it everytime we dine here. Sooo oishii [delicious - the name of the restaurant is very appropriate]!

We went to Oysi Oysi for lunch today and i was not impressed at all. My Ramen came out luke warm, it didn't get cold, it wasn't cooked and the soup tasted like dishwater. When i complained the manager came out and gave me a hard time and instead of apologizing and making me a fresh one that was actually cooked they just threw it in the microwave and returned the same terrible pasty white soup again. He told me they made fresh noodles there but they tasted like wallpaper paste and the sushi was sloppy and poorly prepared. My Dynamite roll had nothing in it but the shrimp and with only 5 tiny 1/4" pieces, all falling apart. When i complained again the manager to me my standards were too high and asked me to leave. I got better service and food at Wendys next door, Just another example of poor food, small portions and terrible service in downtown Vancouver. I'm headed back to Miko Sushi or Tojo. My friends lunch stunk too, they forgot the tempura in her Bento box. Avoid this dump at all costs, obviously as i was informed my standards are higher then they care to prepare if they care at all, and theirs are non existent, after all most customers don't live here and will never return so they don't care what they serve you.
