Ahhhhhh Othello. Good ole Othello. Always there when I need it..
I usually get a breakfast sandwich from here. Their iced coffee is pretty cheap, too. Their sandwiches are pretty good as well. Very nice counter guys..always remember their customers' orders. -

Manhattan, NY
There's a lot of deli's all over the city, but I always see a line for sandwiches at Othello's. They have a wall full of signature subs/sandwiches to choose from as well as the usuals to order. I always go for the turkey club, Derek Jeter or the buffalo chicken sandwich.
They have a great selection of last minute needs at the usual up-marked prices, which is good if you're in a pinch. It's also a little annoying that they do the $10 credit card minimum and also charge you the tax if you do.
Other than that, great deli and great service. -

A great, clean, friendly neighborhood deli. I'm not a huge sandwich person, but Othello's sandwiches and other foods are good, and their delivery is fast. We also run here all the time to grab beer, milk, or other staples when we're in a pinch. Most importantly, the folks who work there are really nice and efficient.

Good stuff. I mean, nothing that will blow you away, but their solid throughout and the prices are good. staff is nice and efficient. It makes me want to live in the neighborhood.

I LOVE OTHELLO'S!! They have great sandwiches, munchies, and anything else you need to pick up but don't have time to go to the store for. The staff is friendly and remembers my name. The overall feel of the place is just nice versus some shady bodegas I've been to around the city. If you're in the area, check them out.

Review from Raffi M.
I love Othello. Don't get me wrong. It's just a New York deli/bodega. But they have extremely cheap sandwiches made with quality cold cuts, the service is cheerful, the place is clean, and they have a wide selection of foreign beer. Plus, if you need a tomato or hummous, or chips or feta or one of 10 pastas at some strange time at night, Othello is the answer to all of those problems.
Every neighborhood should have Othello. -

Moved here from Manhattan and found that Orthello's is a great place to have a quick and tasty outdoors breakfast during the summer. The prepared foods are delicious, the salads are fresh, great italian bread, and a friendly neighborhood jewel.

I haven't had any food from this place and my review is mainly for the service and the fact that it's a convenient place.
Service is great, a couple of times they have had hiccups but hey, we all have bad days! I don't come to this place as often but when I am in the neighborhood, this is the deli I go to. The prices are decent and a smile with service goes a long way. I don't feel creeped out with these people as opposed to being creeped out by those who own the shady bodegas.... -
Review from Sajid Z.
Bronx, NY
It's a great deli as far as delis are concerned. I think the greatest thing about it is that they have a little outdoor section that you can sit in during the nice warm summer/spring days. The great thing is that they are open pretty late, probably to attract people going to the Beer garden and who want a quick bite before, which is highly recommended.
I usually get the gyro and it is good. My friend gets the chicken cutlet sandwiches and he liked it. The people are cool. I think they accept credit cards now, which is a plus.
They an amazing and I do mean amazing selection of sandwiches. Top notch stuff. Although I don't stray too far from traditional sandwiches like a honey turkey on a roll with American cheese and lettuce no tomato and lots of mayo, I've had their specialty subs. I can't recall which ones but they are pretty massive and satisfies anyone on a budget.
Thumbs up guys.
They also have a hot food section, you know one of those little things where you can pick food up from the silver trays. It's like 6 trays of random things but they looked good. It's a deli. -

Read the reviews and decided to try it. I ordered the Al Pacino and it was really good. My father tried the Godfather and loved every bite.

Review from Mike D.
Saw the high grades on Yelp and was wondering what all the hoopla was about. It's a stones throw away from the Triboro Bridge or whatever the heck you wanna call it nowadays. Othello's is a grocery/deli.
Their sandwiches which don the name of celebrities such as Howard Stern, Dan Marino and Anna Nicole Smith make it fun and interesting to order. I've had the Anna Nicole Smith (Turkey/pepper jack/honey mustard) and the Pancho Villa (BBQ chicken/melted Monterey jack/jalapenos). Highly recommend the Pancho Villa on a pita. They give you a huge portion for only $6.50. Pulled chicken is juicy packing lots of flavor. The jalapenos will get your nose running.
The best part in my mind about Othello's besides the friendly smiles behind the counter are the homemade salads. My God, very surprising how good they are. The antipasto is better than most Italian delis and they aren't stingy on the variety of ingredients either. The combination of olives, meats, cheeses and hot peppers explode in your mouth. Way above average as far as that goes. The potato salad is rockin too. Creamy and a little sweet. Nice compliment to cool off your mouth when eating a spicy sandwich.
Another great deli in the area. Don't be turned off by the appearance. Food is really good and reasonably priced for those on a budget. -

ASTORIA, NY
It's probably one of the best delis in Astoria. They make some of the best sandwiches (they've got a wide variety) and they have a wide selection of groceries and fresh fruits and vegetables. I've been going to them for the past 5 years and you simply cannot compete with the quality of the food and the quality of the staff. I go there at least once or twice a week to get a sandwich or some random necessity.
They. Are. AWESOME.
I usually get a Robert DeNiro sandwich but I'm finding that their Cuban Panini is the way to go. I say it again, the staff is amazing. They are super nice and very helpful.
My only complaint is that it is really expensive when buying groceries. for a box of cookies you end up spending 2/3 dollars more than normal. Otherwise, Othello is #1 in my book and I'll keep on coming back for more. -
Review from Alex H.
ASTORIA, NY
I live around the corner and have been here several times. The hot sandwiches are awesome as are the macaroni/potato salad type things. The guys at the counter are very neighborly and pleasant. Sometimes the people hanging out at the outdoor seating are really annoying, but when those guys aren't there it is a nice place to sit and eat.
I never buy anything from the grocery part, except sodas when I'm eating there, because a walk to any other store on the street will save you a considerable buck or two. They're open very late so it is a handy resource to have nearby.
I give Othello's four stars because I will definitely come again. -

Long Island City, NY
Probably one of the best delis in Astoria, Othello's makes a wide array of tasty sandwiches and also offers a decent selection of groceries and fresh fruit or veggies. When I lived around the corner from this place, I was there for a sandwich at least once a week.
They occasionally would mess up an order (forget the cheese on my egg and cheese on an English muffin; put a reuben on a roll -- a roll!) but this generally only happens when they're really busy. The rest of the time, the staff is very nice and the food is great.
Delivery is an option but I've never used it so not sure if it's worth it. -
Review from Annie S.
I live within spitting distance, so I have to like it, right?
I've honestly never had a sandwich from here, but I've had their pancakes, which are pretty good. I basically go here to mini "grocery" shop when I don't feel like walking to the regular grocery store. Some things are a little more expensive, but what do you expect.
The guy at the counter is always super friendly and it's open late so when I get home from the bar, drunchies are always awaiting. -

I love Othello's Deli. I used to live down the block so I would come here for sandwiches during the weekend. They open pretty late too so it would be nice when I'd be coming home from work and needed to pick up some drinks or something quick.
They have an outdoor seating area, nothing fancy but nice if you're out walking the dog and need to pop in and wanna grab a quick lunch or something. -

Thank you, Othello. Because of you, my lazy ass doesn't have to schlep all the way (ha) to 31st Street to pick up a quick and cheap meal.
The people behind the counter are friendly and efficient, the food is fresh, and there are plenty of things to choose from.
For more health-conscious folks, they have fruit and hummus and all sorts of things in a fridge at the back. For those of us who enjoy clogging our arteries, there are plenty of generously-sized sandwiches and some hot foods to choose from, as well as a couple of dessert options (tri-color cookies that aren't stale--whoo hoo!).
The space is large and brightly lit so you won't feel skeevatzed passing by here late. Seating includes two or three tall tables at the front and a decent outdoor section. A good place for both your early morning and late night munchies. -

I had Derek Jeter at my house last night for dinner and he was quite tasty.
This place is very clean, the service is super friendly and the prices are reasonable. I'll probably come back if i'm in the area... like after a long night of drinking at the beer garden. -
Review from Gene K.
When I walk my son to Astoria Park, I'l pass this place sometimes and pickup a sandwich, breakfast or lunch. My ham, egg and cheese has always been decent, reasonably priced, and so has been my roast beef sandwich. The wait's never too long. There's seating outside when the weather's nice too, but it's on the side of the store so it doesnt interfere with you trying to get in. Personally I like "Chris, Sal and Charlies" better for sandwiches (bigger and tastier), but these guys are good too!

Review from Jando S.
Othello's Deli looks like any regular deli on the outside, with a small food area and various toiletries along their supermarket like aisles. This is much more than a convenience store however, it is the site of some of the best sandwich making in all of NYC. Their sandwiches are similar to its neighborhood rival, Sal, Kris & Charlie's, located just one avenue away.
Sure, SK&C's sandwiches are popular and very simple (except "The Bomb") but Othello has its own high quality line of stackers. In addition to being plump and fresh, all of the signature sanwiches are named after the world's most iconic athletes / stars such as the Michael Jordan sandwich or the Al Pacino. The Derek Jeter (ham, turkey, chicken cutlet, provolone) happens to be my favorite, along with the Chad Pennington (turkey, ham, cheese). Each sandwich can either be constructed on a roll or a hero. For the ones who enjoy a good challenge for their appetite, go for the roll.
Food isn't just limited to sandwiches either but to the full range that most delis have to offer. This includes soups, plain sandwiches, and even breakfast items. Their omelettes have been very hearty in the past and the prices are very reasonable ($3-9).
Unlike SK&C's, they actually deliver. However, beware they don't take credit cards for delivery but they will in the store. I have a feeling they've been burned too many times by folks over the phone. The delivery is fairly quick but I prefer to go inside and watch the nice guys behind the counter build the most amazing sandwich which will probably end up being my lunch ... and dinner.Listed in: Amazing Astoria (NYC-Queens)

This is the kind of place you stumble into because you need paper towels or club soda, but oh Othello, you are much, much more, aren't you?
A handful of items you can unexpectedly find here:
Celery
flour
Ben & Jerry's (ice cream and fro yo)
clothes pins
cheese and meat by the pound at reasonable prices
and, yes, fantastic sandwiches
I have an affection for Othello's I've never had for a NY deli before...this is probably due to the fact that every single guy who works there is nice, not creepy and works really hard. They're the kind of guys who can call you "sweetie" without freaking you out. -

Astoria, NY
Great sandwich (I got the Guido, what a name), not expensive at all ($6.50 for a large that will feed me for two meals), with a side of friendly service. The inside is cleaner and better laid out than my 24 hour deli, which is only about 4 blocks closer to my apartment. I may have to switch for all but the emergency late night runs. The only thing they are missing to become the True Best Deli Ever are is Kettle Chips.
And the iced coffee was good, but way too sweet. Next time I know to tell them to tone it down a bit (it felt like 4 sugars or more).
$10 min on credit card charges, to which they add "8.65% sales tax," which is actually higher than the 8.375% that is NY state sales tax. It also makes it sound like they aren't charging sales tax on cash items. Bonus.Listed in: My Neighborhood

This place isn't just clean and superbly well stocked - it's a lifesaver. Doing drinks after work on a Friday night and get home at midnight to realise your fridge is empty and you need to eat now? No problem, Othello will deliver your grilled cheese sandwich and fries. Realise that you have no milk for coffee the following morning? Call them back and they'll make sure you get your quart of half and half.

Astoria, NY
Great, friendly deli complete with outdoor seating. It won't blow your mind, but it's the best game in the neighborhood. (Neighborhood = three block radius of course.)
Because it's the only decent sandwich joint that doesn't make you (gasp) walk a bit, it gets quite crowded. So expect a bit of a wait during high traffic hours.
But when all is said and done, and you're enjoying your chicken cutlet on a roll on one of their outdoor tables, you realize - this is delicious, and this is great. -

Othello's is truley a life saver. Just 1 1/2 blocks from my house and they deliver (useful for when im feeling lazy/sick). The guys who work there are really friendly (not in the creepy way) and efficient. They have a nice selection of miscelaneous things, everything from celery and apples to toilet paper and cold medicine. They have a long list of sandwiches and paninis and also have your typical deli salads (egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad etc.) and hot food (soup and different specials everyday). I usually get one of the Boar's Head chicken sandwiches or the mozzarella and tomoato salad (which is to die for when it's fresh) They have 2 tables inside and a few outside on nice days for when you get your sandwich, panini or iced coffee and you're not in a rush.
Oh! i almost forgot the best part! They are open late. They are only closed for about an hour or so.Listed in: Best of Astoria

ASTORIA, NY
I found Othello's on Yelp, because I was looking for another deli in Astoria that's opened later than Sal, Kris & Charlie's. Othello's is on the same block as the Astoria Beer Gardens, which is great to know if you ever are looking for a sandwich on the subway home. Similar to SKC, it's a bit of a convenience store with aisles of food, but has a wonderful selection of deli sandwiches, each named after a celebrity. We decided to split the Godfather, an italian combo with salami, pepperoni and sopresata. We also decided to add tomatoes for a couple cents more, bringing the grand total to $6.95. While the deli had a few tables and chairs, we headed home to enjoy our sub.
As we unwrapped the sub, we instantly knew it was definitely smaller than the sub from Sal, Kris & Charlie's. As I bit into the sandwich, I noticed this time, the bread was pretty good, but all I could really get out of the sandwich was meat. I couldn't really identify the cold cuts I was eating, they all tasted the same - much like an overwhelming taste of pepperoni. At one point, I even double checked to see if there were tomatoes on the sub - for the extra couple cents we paid, I didn't see too many on there. The boyfriend started questioning if we even got the mozzarella on the sub. Because it was the deli kind of mozzarella and not the fresh kind, it too blended in with the cold cut flavor.
Overall, Othello's was cheap, but for 5 cents more, I can get a much better sub in Astoria at Sal, Kris & Charlie's. In fact, for 2 dollars less, I can get a delicious 5 dollar foot long at Subway - just order the Italian Combo and you'll probably have the same experience as Othello's. -

I absolutely love this place! Friendliest staff that I have encountered in a long time. There is just something about going someplace that employs happy people that make want to keep coming back! Their bread is very tasty. I love the multigrain hero and my roomie is really into the multigrain roll.
The place is so excellent that I find myself ordering from them way too frequently. They have quick delivery as well! Their sandwiches are excellent. The Howard Stern, Derek Jeter, The Godfather... all of them!
My roommates and I are addicted to the rainbow cookies. I should stop talking about Othello's now before I order a late night snack! I love that they also take credit. Score!Listed in: The Story in Astoria

New York, NY
How far are you willing to go for a GREAT sandwich? Thanks to Justin, a self-professed fat kid from Atlanta for introducing me to one of the better sandwich shops around! He's back living in the ATL but when I told him where I was eating last night he admitted that he was jealous.
For months, I've heard that I need to make this pilgrimage to Othello's, but I don't exactly live close and don't always have the time. However yesterday was the day of reckoning. I've listened day in, day out, as to how the Derek Jeter is so good and would potentially change the way I look at sandwiches. Traffic was brutal on the Cross Bronx so I ventured, unnecessarily, to Astoria to see what Othello's had to offer.
First off, the place is clean and well stocked. Second, the staff is fun and friendly. Third, there's a great variety of sandwiches that all were appealing.
My journey was designd to sample the aforementioned Derek Jeter and an Al Pacino and I'll be honest I was disappointed. Disappointed in myself for not being able to eat more! That's how good this was. Two sandwiches and some Georgia Peach Tea to wash it down and I did not have the foresight to buy more.
As I was eating and sitting back in the traffic I avoided earlier I was working the phone to round up all my friends that may not have ventured to this gold mine in Astoria.
29 years in NY and I firmly believed that I just ate the BEST sandwiches. Everything was hot, fresh, and just right. Did I mention I spent an extra $9 on the Triborough just to get there? It was more than worth every cent. Going back soon to sample the Robert Deniro, the Alex Rodriguez, and perhaps even mixing it up with the Chad Pennington. -

MIDDLE VLG, NY
One of the best deli's in Astoria. They have breakfast, burgers, gyros, phillycheese steaks, clubs, paninis, wraps, salads and a hot food section. It's also a mini convenience store. They also cater.
The real winners are the sandwiches that are named after sports and movie stars. You can order them on a roll (with sesame seeds) or a hero. The roll is about a dollar cheaper. The best is the Derek Jeter-it's chicken cutlet, ham, bacon, melted swiss and russian dressing. Although the sandwiches are not as big as the ones at Sal, Kris& Charlie's it's a good alternative and there are more options.
Did I mention they deliver and are open pretty much 24 hours?Listed in: Astoria

The prices are reasonable, but other than that there isn't much going on at this place. I am all for large portions and cheap prices, but this is some very generic stuff they're serving here, and there isn't much to be excited about.
Still, big portions. 4 Stars -

Astoria, NY
How good is it? I used to live just down the street, went there just about daily--often two or three times--and now that I've moved many first rate deli's in distance to the North and East, I still frequent Othello's.
Deli's in this area tend to be overpriced without earning it. Othello's doesn't overprice, and yet they provide that genuine New York deli 'experience' that anyone who grew up in or near the city has found lacking in recent decades.
It's especially good given it's location, a good hike from the nearest grocery store and the markets of Ditmars, because it provides just about everything you may need to survive homelife without making a trip to the supermarket.
No worries about hidden filth or varments in this place, the menu is as well thought out as in any decent restaurant, the freshly prepared food is of high quality and excellent taste, and the staff treat you like a customer--as opposed to being treated like a walking wallet that somehow owes the store something for simply showing up.
Definitely a good place to go to get a great meal for under $10--or else have one delivered.
At Othello's you feel welcomed, nay loved as a regular. They likely remember you face and name, and when you last came in.
In fact, I have to upgrade this place from merely great and convenient to being the genuinely hip--also being a hop and a skip from that Astoria mecca, the Beer Garden.
If you live in the area, or you're on some event like the Five Borough Bike Tour which passes right by it, you would do well to stop in for five minutes, get a coffee and a fresh muffin or pasterie, sit down and enjoy this oasis of NYC.Listed in: My Neighborhood

New York, NY
From the friendly staff to the consistently fresh (and delicious) food, Othello has quickly become my favorite deli in NYC. Their sandwiches are fantastic, and the guys behind the counter are efficient, nice and actually look happy to see you coming. The whole store is extremely clean, bright and well-maintained, and it's always a pleasure to stop in for a bite or to stock up on a few kitchen essentials--plus their food is so reasonably priced. A huge, delicious sandwich and a drink will only set you back a few bucks. (note: I had to come back and add that I just had a BLT, and liter of Canada Dry sparkling water and a package of cupcakes delivered to my house for $5.73 . . . doesn't get much better than that).
Othello also has a good range of grocery items, including cereal, organic milk & eggs, a nice beverage selection (including Naked juices and full-size cartons of OJ), a great assortment of haagen-dazs & ben & jerry's, fresh baguettes, deli meats (as well as ground beef & other meat by the pound), organic cookies/crackers, a small selection of frozen foods (including a few items from Amy's) sliced & grated cheeses and some fruits & veg in addition to the usual canned items, hostess cupcakes, TP & Tide. Plus their behind-the-counter "pharmacy" is well-stocked--they even sell individual-size packets of Airborne!
Othello is what I'm going to miss most whenever I move on from my current apartment--though I'd still come back every once in a while just to get my sandwich fix! -

I just moved to the area and have been working at home all week. I hadn't had the chance to go to a real grocery store and didn't want to have another slice of greasy pizza. What to do?
I took a little stroll down the street and found Othello's!!
The first thing I noticed was how clean the place was. Then I saw the fresh veggies and deli counter and knew this would be the place I would go from now on.
I ordered a turkey sandwich and it was massive. I couldn't finish it - but it was damn tasty,
The guy at the counter was super friendly and told me they open at 3:30 a.m.! WOW. I'm not sure who's awake at that hour, but this could be good for a lot of people. -

There's really no excuse as to why I haven't written a review for my beloved Astoria local deli.
I've lived right down the street from Othello's for almost 3 years now and it continues to be my place for sandwiches whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
I've gone through distinct phases here. When I first moved here I only ordered the Grilled Caesar Wrap with a side of fries. Then it was roast beef, lettuce, and tomatoes served hot with a side of fries. Then for about 2 weeks it was the Derek Jeter sandwich (FANTASTIC signature sandwich, but maybe a tad heavy to eat too often). Then it was a chicken cutlet, lettuce, and tomato. Now I find myself ordering the cheeseburger deluxe. Don't let it being a deli fool you, their burger is big and juicy and only $5.50 with a side of fries.
The service is always friendly here and quick, the food is always fresh, and the extensive list of signature sandwiches and freshly prepared hot food (different everyday) makes Othello's rise above the typical NYC deli. On the few times where I've considered moving elsewhere one of the things that always popped into my head has been "Awww, but that means I'll have to find a new Othello's..." -

Probably the BEST deli in Queens! THE SANDWICHES ARE KICK ASS!!
The staff is friendly, and learn your face pretty quickly.
I am a fan of Othello's since they were on the next block at the old store.
The guys are great! And, they know how to hook-up a sandwich.
