Review from Jenn G.
This groovy cafe is worth the short detour off Nelson's main drag. Truly fantastic coffee, delicious baked goods, and enough interesting menu items (and whole bean coffee) to make it an option any time of day.
We had actually picked up a bag of the beans at the local supermarket for a lodge trip not realizing it was Nelson's local roaster. The beans were excellent, enough so that we sought this place out on our way back from Powder Creek.
Admittedly we didn't stick around long enough to comment on the local flora and fauna, but it appears to be a prime people watching location, if that's what you're into. -

This place has GREAT coffee! But there are way too many jobless, dreadlocked dirtbags hanging out on the patio smoking all day long. It is not very inviting. You would think that people who can afford to pay a premium for high quality coffee (not to mention cigarettes at $10 per pack) could also afford deodorant and shampoo, but I guess they have a carefully cultivated "counterculture" image to maintain, and until some "local" artisan starts making deodorant out of "local" hemp oil, they'll just choose to stink.

This is definitely the best cafe in town. They import beans from around the world and roast them right here, up at Nelson Brewing Company actually. The brother of a co-worker works there and I was able to see the roasting in situ. Not only do they roast locally and have a clean, open, comfortable cafe with awesome pastries...their coffee is also good. Just because a place roasts their own beans doesn't mean they know how to roast them properly and consistently (see: Vancouver's Continental Coffee on Commercial). While it doesn't make for sexy Yelp writing, I must mention how great the customer service is too. When employees demonstrate good customer service skills - such as eye contact, politeness, attention to detail - it reflects well on the product being sold. As a customer, you can tell that the baristas take pride in the product at Oso, and that the cashiers are happy to be working there. This place is the shizz, and everyone in town knows it. It is always packed and has been around forever. While it is tempting to go there every day, I try to support some of the other good cafes, such as The Dominion. Spread the cash.

Awesome place for coffee, absolutely love the tranquil garden! Coffee and the garden seems like such a logical pairing, wish we had this place in Langley it would clean up!
If your ever in Nelson bc you gotta check out this place.
The only thing that would make it better is having some free wifi -

There was a line up Sunday morning at 730a and it was not even open, so we knew we found Nelson's coffee house of choice.
Came back at 800a to see a longer line but with 6 girls behind the counter it took no time before we had a hot cup of Jo in hand.
Nothing fancy this morning and no food but a great cup of blended half java and ethiopian. Was enjoyed on a nice sunny June morning
Can't wait for tomorrow......to be cont.. -

I was in Nelson for a week and visited Oso 4 times.
The coffee is a dark roasted local product that offers supreme quality in the cup and over the counter.
I was impressed with the personable service, the incredible food quality and the kind atmosphere.
I love locally roasted coffee, I love local ingredient cooking, Oso, is a landmark in Nelson. -

Nelson = Oso Negro Coffee for me and the big guy. We spent two weeks in Nelson a while back and enjoyed this coffee immensely. We met the owner and chatted about life in Nelson, the culture, and coffee roasting. We visited the Roaster, in a separate location up on the hill.
The quality of this coffee ranks the highest in BC. up there with Kicking Horse in our books. There are only a few in those high ranks with a slot or two for the yet undiscovered.
The cafe is a wonderful spot, it's everything you'd never expect to find in this small town.
Oso Negro coffee can be found at the following locations here in Vancouver:
Strong's Market, Mainly Organics, Drive Organics, and perhaps a few other select Organic food stores.
Try it when you have the chance. If you are traveling, be sure and stop in to the cafe and buy a bag of the freshest stuff and enjoy Nelson. One of the best little towns in Canada.Listed in: Connect the dots on a coffee…, West to East and back.

The best coffee in town! Stronger brews than others around town. Reasonably priced and always hits the spot.

Review from Ben B.
We spent two days in Nelson at the end of a two+ week vacation. We didn't have much luck finding good espresso (and lattes) during our trip, but Oso Negro was a great find. The coffee drinks were excellent, the pastries homemade and delicious and the staff friendly and helpful. Even though it was clear we were tourists, the staff treated us like locals. It's a wonderful Nelson find. The cafe is comfortable and welcoming.
