Review from Erin D.
This bar is home of the Southsiders, the official supporters group for the Vancouver Whitecaps. One of the supporters brought us to this bar after the Houston Dynamo game, and we had a blast. The long island iced teas were reasonably priced (about CAN$7), and they tasted decently. I didn't have any food, so I can't really comment about that (just had long islands). Service, despite the crowd, was pretty good too.
The bar is completely packed after a game (wasn't there before the game), so if you are going there, make sure you head there quickly. The best part of this bar are the Southsiders. Typically I do not mingle with opposing supporters groups (in fact, this was my first time, and I travel a lot to away games), but the Southsiders were too convincing. Their hospitality and welcoming manner was surprisingly pleasant, an appreciated gesture for someone who traveled a long way! -

Say what you will about Oscar's Pub, but I love this place. I have lived in the area for almost three years now and Oscar's is certainly one of my favorite places for cheap eats. They changed management a while ago and the food is noticeably better since then.
I usually go in for the giant lumberjack breakfast when I'm hungover. For about $10 dollars, you get bacon, sausage (the good kind, not that gross over cooked bs), ham, eggs of your choice, toast, and the best real potato hash browns I have ever stuffed my face with. It's a big serving and I usually have trouble finishing the whole thing.
The rest of their food is pretty decent and they have cheap specials every day off the week. The $2.99 deluxe burger on Tuesdays and Sundays is worthwhile. Other people complain about the food, but I have yet to be disappointed.
Aside from the food, the drinks are good and they have great specials every day. The staff is very friendly, and the pub itself isn't too bad. The only thing is that it IS a sports bar, so if you happen to stop in while there's any kind of game going on it can get pretty loud and obnoxious in there.Listed in: You've got to try it at least…, Cheap breakie

Review from Nicole F.
I came back for a veggie burger and some beer with my roomie last night. I had a gift certificate I needed to use before the expiry date!
Coming on a Monday was a bad idea. I knew they normally have a lot of sports playing on the TVs but I didn't realize how crazy they get over Monday Night Football. It was pretty packed compared to how busy it normally is(n't) and there was no music playing. The TVs were all turned on full blast, SO LOUD, and at some points I couldn't even hear my roomie talking to me across the table. They didn't turn the volume down during the commercials either, and I found this pretty odd. Nobody else in the pub even looked up but we were pretty weirded out.
My fault, I guess. Any other night I'm sure it would have been fine.
That out of the way - on to the drinks/food!
Pitchers of Granville Island Lager were on special for $12 so we grabbed one of those, and I ordered my veggie burger with fries. (roomie had eaten already, just came for beer!)
I don't know what happened, but the fries were a little dry. I think they'd been sitting out for awhile. Still tasted good though. My veggie burger was a tad overcooked but again, it was still delicious. I'm not sure what was going on in the kitchen, but instead of two thin tomato slices, I got two halves of a smaller tomato. The skin was wrinkly and it seemed old, so I picked it off. Not impressed.
I'll still be back. I'm curious to check out the Sunday Night Karaoke.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I came here for the first time last week with a group of friends. We got served pretty fast and they had some good deals on, but the food I had was not the best.
I ordered their mini chicken sliders and they were greasier than McDonalds. The bottom of the burger was dripping in oil. I also had a bite of my friends perogies and they were not very tasteful (I am Ukrainian - I know my perogies).
The drinks were pretty good. That is about all I would come back for. -

I'm still a fan, however their prices have gone up! Noooo! Burger deals are now $3.99 (still a good deal if you think about it) with fries. And wings went up to $0.39, I think, on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Sad. But I didn't expect them to actually last that long with deals like that.
But, the reason we still love this place after our games is we are treated super well by the staff. And after only coming a few times, we were comped a jug of beer, just because. See, that's how you get loyal customers! We've spent countless hours and lots of money at other bars and pubs around town, and even though they remembered us, we never got deals. If you want to keep people coming back time and again, reward your loyal customers once in a while. Makes a huge difference.Listed in: Cheap, Reliable Eats in the…, Best Bathrooms

I am super impressed with this establishment. The previous food indulgence here left me never wanting another Oscar's burger with buns of steel (literally) but after surprisingly hearing back from Oscar's about it, I've changed my burger standoff-ishness preference. (I'll try another soon) On top of that, I happily almost drooled over the fab fries I recently devoured (don't tell anyone k?) :)
Sometimes the ambient temperature tends to be on the cold side regrdless to street temperature (I was told staff cannot change it?) So wear a sweater or bring one.
As I live only a hop, skip and a jump away (or thereabouts) with all that you offer, my boyfriend and I have become sunday evening karaoke regulars. Thank you oh so much1 Previous Review: Show all »

I used to live just down the street from Oscars and let me say, never in my life have I so consistently had expletives yelled at me while I walked by a place. Seriously, every weekend day some drunk on the patio would try to pick a fight. It was a joke when we brought friends to our place to try to bet what the people would yell. Fantastic clientele.
Once I lived by Oscar's I'd long since ceased going to Oscars for the fear of the punch in the face those yelling locals might deal out. That said, previously I'd had alright experiences. As just a local Burnaby heights bar it had really good prices, wasn't too local-centric (*cough* Old Admiral *cough*) and had a variety of entertainment beyond just the sports. Karaoke nights at Oscar's are huge and pretty amusing. Not quite the people you usually get singing and that makes it all the more fun.
So, how to I marry those two experiences? I'd say head on down to Oscar's if it's early or a non-busy day. If you like it, if you fit in, and if nobody yells at you it might just be your new watering hole. If you immediately feel like everyone is one second away from bottling you, perhaps cruise down the strip to one of North Burnaby's other fine establishments.
Finally, as an aside, Oscar's has a great cold beer and wine attached to it. Great service and staff and huge selection now that they've renovated. I never let my sour experiences at the bar stop me from going there. -

What's up with this rats nest. I gave it a chance when I first moved in to the neighbourhood but it's horrible. The food is inedible. I was poured a rye and coke with 2 cubes of ice. The staff is rude and seem to think they are better than you. Hey. You're an oscars waitress. Get over yourself. Just another disappointment on this barren strip of commercial real estate. The locals deserve better.

This is a great place to eat and watch the game, UFC and drink. Their daily specials are good and the food is reasonably priced. I don't come here much for their karaoke nights which I believe are now Fridays but it's great to be here to watch any UFC or Sports. On Saturdays you can get a very decent prime rib dinner for about $12.00. Their menu has improved a lot over the last year.

The perfect, practically only spot for Whitecaps and Lions pre-game drinks. Draws for prizes and good food. But on game days you have to be there well before the kick-off or you'll be standing waiting at the door.
