Oscar Peterson was incredibly successful. He was a legendary pianist, recording artist, and composer. If you're downtown, around the National Arts Centre, you should definitely stop by his memorial statue and take a look, if you haven't already.
Thanks to great fundraising efforts, this bronze statue of the late Canadian jazz icon was created by sculptor Ruth Abernathy and unveiled by the Queen on June 30th as a part of Ottawa's Canada Day celebrations just this year. The sculpture is outside and has a grand piano, which is attached to the NAC building, and a bench with Oscar Peterson sitting on it, turned away from the piano. He has a big smile on his face and looks very jolly. There's even room on the bench to sit beside him and take pictures, which you'll often find people doing. -

The Oscar Peterson is located appropriately next to the NAC. I think it's a neat idea to honour one of the best past Canadian musicians. I think that here in Canada and Ottawa alike, we should investing more in the arts and learning to appreciate them more.
I do find that the sculpture does have proportions a bit askew.
This sculpture is great because it allows space for tourists and locals alike to sit beside Oscar Peterson (or on his lap, as I have seen a few people do) to get a picture. It reminds me of the John Lennon Statue in Havana in that aspect.
A great addition to our city! -

This is Ottawa's newest and probably the most interactive statue you'll find in town.
In a city filled with political tributes you may be surprised to find a really cool statue to the late jazz icon Oscar Peterson just a couple of blocks away from Parliament Hill.
The statue was actually unveiled by the Queen on her last trip to Ottawa and to great fanfare. Oscar and seated on the grounds of the National Arts Centre, leaned against his piano and waiting for the perfect photo op.
Tourists and locals are often seen sitting with him for a really cute photo. The statue is so interactive that the NAC has installed speakers above him to play his music over Elgin Street. At night the site is lit up with two tight spotlights making even evening photos with the jazz legend look pretty cool.
It's a great tribute and this city could use more interactive like it.
