Hidden in the depths of a dingy-basement food-court at the UBC campus, Osaka Sushi ironically has some of the best sushi in that area. Located in the University Village, Osaka Sushi is more commonly known amongst its students as "village basement food-court sushi" because of its location. It gives students a break from generic, cafeteria food that is served in the dorms by having cheap and affordable sushi that is of an exceptional quality.
The edamame is freshly steamed and salted, which makes a perfect appetizer, along with the seaweed salad. Combinations of various sushi rolls (yam rolls, California rolls, tuna, and salmon rolls) are hand-rolled right there, packaged together, and served with a miso soup for under $10. Some of its specialty rolls include The New York roll (salmon, avocado, and cream cheese) and The Chicken Teriyaki roll (a chicken terriyaki meal in a roll). Although The Chicken Teriyaki roll is not traditionally Japanese and completely westernized, there is just something about the terriyaki sauce used on it that is superiorly splendid. The Chicken Teriyaki Don uses the same spectacular sauce, and is served on a bed of rice and bean sprouts.
Inexpensive, mouth-watering, and filling meals... served with free tea. Every poor college-student's dream. -

Umm.. I think UBC students have been cooped up in classes for too long, that they've forgotten what sushi/sashimi is supposed to taste like.
Sashimi doesn't taste fresh, and is actually fishy. The miso soup tasted like plastic seaweed (if there is such a thing), and their rice was not seasoned correctly. California roll was sloppy, and flavors didn't match up (Who can mess up making a cali roll?!) And what makes it even more sad, is that they serve "CHINESE" soy sauce.. which is waaayyyyyyy too salty to eat with Japanese sushi. Sigh. I should've stayed clear of this area, and gone to get some Indian Curry (hard to go wrong with all that salted buttery goodness).
Not only that.. the price is not even that affordable. They should at least charge bare minimum for the items they dish out to these poor students.

save your money. its better to continue studying than eat here, or give yourself a real break, and eat else where. -

Seeing as how this place is located in this underground grungy looking food court, I wasn't expecting much at first. However, they do have many decently priced combinations for under $10 and the quality of the fish isn't half bad. The service is also pretty quick and they are located conveniently on UBC campus. Of course, there are tons of other better sushi restaurants nearby in Vancouver, but I do prefer to come here when I'm on a tight budget with time constraints.

The sushi is pretty good here for being at the UBC campus! Of course, if you want really good sushi, I recommend going downtown. Out of all of the places that serve sushi in the village (one more sushi, omio, and suga), I think this place has the best sushi. The ingredients taste fresh, and it's made to order. It's a bit on the expensive side, but if you have an Osaka card, you get a stamp for every $7 you spend. Then you get $5, $5, $5, and $10 off your purchase after you spend a certain amount...
The cooked food is pretty good here. Highly recommend the beef curry don. I eat here once every 1-2 weeks. I can basically mimic the cashier there now...
