Review from Sheila W.

You have to arrive early in the season to be able to taste their delicious wines! They were sold out by Labour Day in 2008. I am going to put them high on my list and try to make it back in the spring! They open in May.
The actual building of Orofino's winery is part of its attraction. It's Canada's only strawbale winery. The ecofriendly design keeps the building cool in the summer and retains heat in the winter. It also keeps the barrel room constant.
The hosts are such honestly great people. They chatted with us and answered all our questions about the strawbale winery (which I'm sure they answer all the time). And the wines! Ohhhhh the wines!
The Riesling ($18) was amazing. It was tart enough to be refreshing yet still had a smooth mouthfeel.
I love a big, meaty red and their Merlot/Cabernet ($34) is it! Dark in the glass and full of spice and blackberry, it is their signature wine and a gold medal winner at the All Canadian Championships. You can find it in some Vancouver restaurants, but not for $34.
They also make a dessert wine, the Late Harvest Muscat ($25 for 375 ml). It's easy to enjoy at 10.5 percent alcohol and it's not too sweet.
It's a beautiful setting and the host told us to stay longer next time and picnic in their backyard. I might just take him up on that!!Listed in: Similkameen Wineries
