Review from Dave R.
I was in Winnipeg for business and my birthday was yesterday so I figured I deserved a special meal. After some research and some chats with coworkers, I got the recommendation that if I wanted seafood, Orlando's was the place to visit. Well, they were right... but not just for seafood. All their offerings were exquisite!
Their menu is rather short but they really try to customize their offerings to whatever desires the customer has. I told them what I liked and disliked and asked what they recommended and before the words got out of my mouth, he said just try the chef's special. He made sure I was not allergic to anything and immediately got my bread and wine, also his pairing. The bread was warm with a tasty crust and could be dipped into the balsamic oil mixture. The wine was a nice choice but not being very knowledgeable, I couldn't tell how nice...I just liked it. They seemed to have a fairly large variety available for those that know better. The chef's special is 3 appetizers, a salad (either caesar or house), and 5 meat choices with vegetables and pasta.
The appetizers were cold slices of BBQ pork tenderloin with a special wasabi sauce, some large hot shrimp in lobster sauce (called Shrimp Orlando), and a hot stuffed mussel in the half-shell. All were tasty but my favorite was the mussel.
The next course came out shortly after I set my fork down and had a sip of wine. It was their Portugese house salad and was fresh with oil and vinegar. It also had some tomatoes, cucumbers, and beets surrounding the lettuce.
In short order, the main dish was presented. There was a mound of pasta in the middle of the large round plate and surrounded by the 5 meats and 4 vegetable choices. The meats were a stuffed pork loin roll with prociutto and chicken, a broiled filet mignon medallion, orange roughy that was grilled and brushed with olive oil and lemon, some baby halibut (very tender and tasty), and finally a butterflied prawn (which I was told was not farm raised and not available very often). Between each meat choice was a vegetable choice, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and something green (beans or peas in pods, not sure which). All I did was take a bite, turn my plate, and take another bite....each was cooked perfectly and I kept the variety about equal until the very end.
I came here with the desire to get some excellent seafood but was treated to a gourmet meal with an ideal balance of portions and flavors. I can highly recommend each meat choice and have no favorites. Please don't just think of this place as a seafood restaurant, it is much more.
As I neared completion the chef (owner), Arnaldo Carreira, came out to see how things were going and we ended up talking about my home town of Chicago and how he doesn't really try to compete with the big restaurants or go for the least expensive ingredients to offer people. He really enjoys creating an experience for the patrons and that shows in the greeting I got on entering, the clean and upscale white cloth covered tables, the fingerprint free mirrored wall (that makes this small place look larger than it is), and the personal attention with each offering. Because we were chatting a while, they included a dessert wine and some capuccino to top off the meal at no charge.
The meal itself was $35 plus about $8 for my glass of wine with the meal. It was worth every penny and I fully enjoyed my experience. There are other offerings that are less expensive but I wanted the full experience that the chef's special offered. I have no doubt any choice would be a good one here....enjoy! -

Still my favourite place to eat in Winnipeg. Just ask them to "take care" of you and put the menus away. Great for a business dinner or romantic meal. We've brought the kids (ages 9 & 11) a few times and they were great with them. In the summer, the patio is open and is a great place to hang out on Corydon Ave.
Must have - BBQ Octopus as an appetizer. If you're going, let me know and I'll tag along :) -

Once again, Marion Warhoft proves that her 4.5 star reviews are way too generous. I ate here sometime ago and remember enjoying a nicely grilled steak but haven't been back. The decor has changed quite a bit; very dim lighting, black walls with white crown moldings and a semi-open kitchen in the back. The mirrors are still on the right wall to distort your view of the room; it's a very tiny narrow place if not for those mirrors. There's probably about 8-10 tables with varying number of seats.
The owner spoke to us and convinced us that the $35 tasting menu (appetizer and entree samplers) was the way to go, especially if we let the chef decide our meal. And so we went with the chef's suggestion for our dinner.
We started with the complimentary grilled baguettes served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The bread was good, but would have been better without the significant charred parts (grill marks good, burnt bad). The appetizer sampler appetizer included 2 slices of smoked salmon with onions and capers drizzled with olive oil, about 3 small to medium sized shrimps in a lobster sauce reduction and a deep-fried code cake. There wasn't much preparation with the smoked salmon so it tasted like what you imagine it would taste like. The shrimp in the lobster sauce was cooked perfectly though the lobster sauce overwhelmed the shrimp flavour. The deep-fried cod cakes were my favourite of the three - crispy on the outside and flaky inside with good flavour.
Next was the lobster bisque soup served in a very shallow wide soup bowl. It's a very small portion but the richness of this soup makes up for it, though I found it very salty as it tasted like the soup reduced down too much.
The plating of the entree sampler is a bit dated; the few vegetables that came with the dish were used as "decoration" on the perimeter of the dish (peas and carrots) and there were 3 cauliflower and broccoli that were strategically placed around the protein dishes with a small portion of tomato rice in the middle. The dish had 5 portions of protein, each about 2 ounces or so - sterling silver filet mignon; 3 white fishes (mahi mahi, seabass and possibly a snapper) along with one large grilled prawn. First off, the seasoning was not consistent as some items were too salty and some felt like it was completely bland except for the taste of the grill. My issue with places that serve steak is that they should ask you how you want it prepared, even if we ordered the chef's surprise. It was prepared medium rare - the way we like it but I know many people who like their meats prepared differently. Anyhow the steak was tender though very bland - no seasoning found on there other than the ground pepper I asked for. All the fish portions were cooked properly - the seabass tasted the best with good seasoning, the mahi mahi was not seasoned and the snapper tasted off. The best protein on the dish was the grilled prawn. Even the tomato rice was too salty. If you have a bigger appetite, I suggest ordering a la carte instead of these sampler dishes.
Service was good and seemed pretty laid back.
It's unfortunate that specializes in seafood didn't live up to it's reputation as it was very hit and miss. Hate to say it, but there are other tasting menus in the city that cost $35 (5 courses, including dessert) that prepare more consistent food so I can't see myself returning here anytime soon.
Specialties
Upscale casual (informal) dining. Grilled bone-in Veal & Pork Chops, bone-in steaks. Outstanding seafood.
