Review from Shea R.
Houston, TX
This place is pretty busy on Thursday nights. It is very casual and laid back, don't feel like you need to get super dressed up to go here. It had a very "Austin" type feel to it.
There is indoor and outdoor seating, which when I got there around 945pm, all of the outdoor seating was full. Most of the people there were just enjoying a couple beers and catching up with friends. It wasn't very loud, so it was a good environment for a conversation over drinks.
Parking wasn't too bad, I ended up parallel parking up the street about a block, but I could see it being frustrating on busier nights. I'm pretty sure some of the surrounding shopping centers towed (so watch out!) -

Onion Creek is my favorite place to hang out in Houston. Period.
Besides their fantastic patio, they have a fair salad and sandwich variety. They have lots of different beers, and their coffee is usually fresh. The only irritation that I have is that sometimes when I go later in the evening, I get offered an Americano in place of my black coffee that I ordered, pretty much out of the bartender's laziness for not wanting to make a fresh pot (or his opinion that espresso beats out regular coffee. In my opinion, it does not). I'd rather he offer me cold coffee or say that they are out. Kasim (I hope that is even a little bit close to the spelling of his name; if it's not, I apologize, man) always recognizes and greets my girlfriend and me when we arrive, and suggests items that are not always on the menu. Food- and beer-wise, I have never been disappointed. I enjoy their wide vegetarian options. I enjoy that you can show up any time of day, any day of the week, with a large group of friends or as a pair or solo and have the same great, chill experience. -

Salad + beer = awesome.
Yes. You heard me. Salad AND beer.
One of my favorite things to do is walk here in the evening, get a salad (either the Sabine or the House + chicken), and reward myself for being healthy with a beer. A handful of local and various other varieties are on draught.
Love coming here when the weather is moderate. Note: no dogs allowed. -

Friendly staff, good food, and good beer selection.
Salads are good, hummus is tasty, and of course the BEER :)
Now that I see they have Mon night steak night, I am gonna hit it up then. I like to go when it is not crowded. All ages and faces. Just a chill place to grab a drink with friends. Also, a good date spot if you get a couch... -

Went there for breakfast with the kids. This place was perfect--not too crowded at ten so we sat outside and I drank my coffee and at my taco in relative peace while the kids petted the dogs and ran around like maniacs. The only sad note was all the delicious looking beers I saw others drinking, while I knew a day at the museum with a three year old awaited me and I had to keep my wits sharp.

We come here at least once a week- sometimes twice if the weather is nice. It's a neighborhood jewel and we love it! So this review is long overdue...
The staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is laid back. It is very diverse; nobody seems to be judging anybody. OC has a great beer selection and a full bar. They recently revamped their kitchen so they are offering really tasty menu options... great salads and juicy burgers. Their homemade guacamole is my favorite.
This is a great hangout any day of the week. There is also a small Farmers Market here on Sundays. -
Review from Gracie D.
Since I've started coming here in 2006, the quality of food has gone down and the food prices have gone up. I used to come here ALL. THE. TIME. And I would always order the same thing: Asian Veggie Wrap. It was veggies with some sort of cabbage slaw topped with crispy noodles, rolled into a spinach wrap. There was even a similar salad option. Then they bumped up the price from $6 to about $7. Then they eventually removed it completely from their menu.
If you go there now as a vegan, you're pretty much left with an uninspiring selection of salads (sans cheese and meat), as their sandwiches all have either feta or flavored mayo. And BOCA burgers?! Really?! All restaurants should just ban that brand. All-around horrible, and possibly the crappiest line of veggie burgers out there. Rubbery and bland. It's better not to have that as an option as I see it as a cop-out for restaurants to claim to be veggie-friendly by offering a frozen veggie patty on their menu. Their menu online indicates that there IS a veggie dog option (as I remember from previous years of going) but my last time there this past Sunday, I didn't notice it on their printed menu. Hopefully it's still an option (even if it's off-the-menu) since I occasionally have an odd hankering for a veggie dog and I'm completely done with Happy Fatz down the street (read my review).
White Oak St has tripled in terms of traffic and business so parking has become more of a bitch. Still, Onion Creek will always have an amazing patio with a great selection of beers (and awesome daily specials). I much prefer Cedar Creek, but if you're wanting to chill out on a patio along White Oak - avoid the fratty crowds that flock to Christian's or Little Woodrows and come here instead. And if you're a vegan, make sure to eat before you come.
Yo OC - bring back the Asian Veggie Wrap and stop changing your menu!!!!!!! -

Beer, beer, beer. What a great selection!
If you're looking for a chill place to grab a nice, cold one then Onion Creek is the place. I didn't have any of the food, but the beer selection has to be one of the best in Houston. -

Review from Keyla R.
So, we headed to Houston to visit the fam. Living in ATX gives us that unavoidable 'we-live-in-best-place-ever-so-we-have-nothing-to- envy' snot nose attitude. Can't help it...Smug is an unavoidable side effect of life in ATX. But, shoot and damned, it displeases me plenty to say I envy Houston for having a great place like Onion Creek!***
We met some friends there one afternoon to do some catching up. You know those conversations...the ones that take forever and several great beers to get through. Well, Onion Creek is just the place for them. It is one of those great little bars with a laid-back east 6th street vibe, coupled with a clean suburbanite-looking bathroom.
An added plus is the huge fantastic patio just built for hanging out on with friends on a nice evening. Plus there are great couches for lounging on inside if the heat is too much for you. (Tables, too, but we liked the couch.)
The beer selection is solid, with local offerings and nice micro-brews. And the food is pure comfort. We had Frito Pie, and some Hummus Plate. Both were fine.
Just one thing, when we were there you had to go wait in the rather long line at the bar to place your drink and food orders. Not enough table service there, but then that may just be considered part of the charm of the place. You know, conversations run much smoother when there is no one to interrupt constantly and ask if you need anything. Here, when you need something, one of you just has to head to the bar to order more. It works.
Actually, what makes this place it atmosphere and beer. It has both in spades. So go there!
***BTW, just having some good fun with the whole H-Town, ATX rivalry, so try not get mad at me. Joking tones are hard to convey in print.Listed in: Meat

So I am sitting in onion creek right now drinking my beer. It is one of my favorite ones, Paulaner Salvator. They seem to have a very wide selection of beer, which I love. The problem is, I can't see them well. The bottles are just too far away.
Another Yelper reviewed is as a kind of Austin 6th street kind of place. He wasn't kidding. It looked like they ripped it out of the ground and move it here from Austin. Very hip.
The menu looks pretty simple. Salads, sandwiches, burgers, and pizza.
I just got my meal. The Greek salad. Amazing dressing. The meat has a nice color, is nice and warm, and soft and tender. Generous portion of meat for what I expect for 3$
I just bit down on a seed of a kalamata olive. Good and bad thing. I like that they were not pre-pitted. It gives them a weaker flavor so they don't overpower the other ingredients.
Peperoncinis are an interesting addition. They weren't too strong and matched the other favors quite well. Easy to pick out of you aren't a fan.
There a just a lot of things in the salad that work well together, aren't overpowering and make the salad taste great even though there isn't a lot of dressing. The mark of a great salad.
It was a bit big so, I ended up finishing my meat and artichoke hearts(what attracted me to the salad in the first place). Overall it was a great experience. Definitely worth a second visit to see how the rest of the food tastes. For now I'm going to go with a four rating but I'll be back to see if it can earn a five.

A relaxing place to grab a beer with friends. Patio is fun and casual, but the inside seating is nice too for when it's too hot outside. Food is delicious, and the nachos are fantastic. Come here for the great beer selection though, and enjoy some of Houston's greatest local brews.

We had people from the Fort Worth office here recently. Their requirements:
1. It had to be something local they couldn't get back home.
2. It had to have a good patio.
3. It had to have beer.
Check, check and mothertruckin' check for OC. We happened upon Steak Night which was quite tasty (once you figured out that you had one waitress for the bar and another waitress for the food; a caterer takes care of the steaks.
Delish food, great patio, great beer. There are nights where I kick myself for living in the suburbs. This was one. If I lived in the heights I would walk here every freaking night. -
Review from Monica K.
Great neighborhood spot for coffee, lunch, happy hour, or late night drinks.
Food here is solid and pretty cheap. The menu is standard cafe fare of sandwiches, salads, burgers, dogs, and pizzas. Whether you're in the mood for something healthy or greasy, you can find just the thing to satisfy your craving here.
The real draw of this place is the patio... It's awesome! Lots of picnic table seating perfect for enjoying that, um, awesome Houston weather.
Don't feel like eating? They've got a great selection of beers on tap, daily booze specials, and a second patio bar open on weekends. Not sure if they have TV's though, so if sports are a priority you may want to look elsewhere. -

I went on a quiet day. All staff have changed... Menu has changed... a little slow service but seemed like it's getting better again.
Main thing was that it was not packed. If busy no doubt the place is still a nightmare. There must be a better way to order... perhaps more staff or table service????1 Previous Review: Show all »

Always a great place to go for laid back atmosphere. They have a great selection of bottled beer and oddly they hey also have what io consider the best potato salad in town. My guess is that it is sour cream based instead of mustard or mayo based.

Nothing wrong with Onion Creek. It's a good go-to place- Need breakfast? coffee? lunch? craft beer? dessert? cocktails? wine? Onion Creek has it! They don't have particularly amazing food but it's not bad. If you're in the mood for a huge salad Onion Creek's are big enough for 4 people. If you're in the mood for some caffeine the dirty chai latte (I prefer their Iced) is a tasty treat. (Espresso mixed with Chai. Doesn't seem like it would work but it does!) Pizzas are a good deal (they come with two so you can share.)
I try to avoid OC at night or on the weekends as it gets really crowded and service is slow. They also tend to play bad music in the evenings...
Lots of outdoor seating, perfect when the weather is nice. -
Review from Kelly R.
This place is pretty good and has alot of options. It has tons of seating so it's easy to meet up with a group of people for eats/drinks.
Now for the food-it's alright. I had the ahi tuna salad. The lettuce was a mix of the worst greens possible for a salad and the ahi tuna steak lay on the top (not in slices). The tuna was a little overdone-they just aren't very good unless the center is raw.
Just like all their other "creek" locations they have a great atmosphere. very laid back but the food still lacks. too bad. -

Tacoma, WA
Great experience. It's been years since I have eaten here but the crowds were sophisticated enough to not make scenes. No bar fights to worry about. Pretty serene night life. We got nachos and beer. It was pretty standard but the setting and the restaurant was clean. The restrooms are about average for many places in Houston. It's hard to keep restrooms immaculate when Houston has large crowds coming and going. What's important is the service is great and the food is worth what you pay for. The restaurant seems to be owned by a local brewery which is always a plus if you are a fan of beer. I am not a beer fanatic but this place is pretty nifty!

Review from Eddie S.
Wanting to find an inexpensive bar on a Sunday (yea right) yelp pointed me to Onion Creek because of the average of 4 star ratings. I can see parking is not easy but I found one inside lucky me by the door. I walked in wondering if I was going to be welcome here or be starred down like walking in some grungy hardcore biker bar.
Entered, grabbed a menu and saw the selection of beer and felt great because of the large selection on bottles and draft. I have become a fan of ESB beer because of Richmond Arms so I asked casually expecting the usual "We don't have that" but low and behold they had it *gasp!*. The handle was slim and red so I don't think it's the same that I'm used too but it was close enough in taste. My friend I was with ordered a frozen Mimosa. We ordered the Frito Pie and the Hot Dog all the way. Total came to a measily $16! Very easy on the wallet.
We sat, drank, looked around at the memorabilia which consists of neon signs, 12" Vinyl Albums, 7" Vinyl records, bicycle hanging from the roof and many more things. It was a pretty dozy place and not crowded at this time (3:30 pm Sunday 11 13 2011).
We left, hearty because of the meal and me happy I found another ESB outlet. I will be returning. -

I am a Onion Creek freak. I can't think of any other bar that I have frequented as often.
Here is what I love about Onion Creek. I can go here on the weekend with my friends for a wild and crazy night, I go here on a Sunday night with my husband for a low-key date, and I can take my parents here for lunch. I don't have to worry if anyone will dislike Onion Creek, because well, that's impossible.
The staff is just amazing. All of the bartenders are outgoing and funny. They make good suggestions for things and joke with you constantly. The specials here are ridiculously great. They have what they call "Cheap Ass Beer" night where Pabst, Schlitz, Pearl and beers of such a nature are only $1.25 a piece. There are also nights where Heinekens are only $2, not to mention the delicious and fun Monday night steak nights.
The people that come to Onion Creek are also the kind of people I like to surround myself with. Everyone here seems like they live here, like this bar was made for them. No loud obnoxious drama, no screaming, and no horrible music.
If you are a looking for a place with great food, great music and a great atmosphere, look no further.Listed in: Houston: Best Bars, Houston: The Heights

It's just a little too "Vegetarian Granola Family" with kids for me.

This is one of the best patios in Houston. It's especially good during the cooler months of the year, receiving exposure for the full trip of the sun across the sky.
The coffee is decent/good (not "very good" nor less than good). It's reliable and neither impresses nor disappoints. The same can be said of the draft beer selection (much better than a McSports bar).
THEY NOW SERVE LIQUOR! It's a welcome addition. The outer-loopers seem to have found a new haven (they were absent, today)... and it seemed like the good ol' neighborhood Austin-themed bar that it used to be. The staff is friendly and works hard (n.b., you might have to wait in line a while to get drinks/food).
The food is not especially good. It's generally made in a microwave oven and... well, "not my bag." Otherwise, O.C. is a nice place to whittle away some of your life. -
Review from Claire G.
I realize this place doesn't need another review, but what the heck!?
This is one of my regular hang outs, and I have come to like it more and more, especially when it is not 150 degrees outside! And they now have a full bar which makes me like them even more! Try the frozen mimosas...so refreshing and they will creep up on you! They don't have waiter service, so know this...the lines can get long on the weekends...maybe think about double fisting it.
The food is decent, but I usually don't come here to eat. They have some salads and sandwiches, but it seems to take quite a while to get your food no matter when it is. They do have a steak night (Wednesdays) that is a great deal!
The atmosphere is very deliberately very Austin. They have one my favorite patios in Houston. Quite a few tables and deck space. The inside is smaller and a little more intimate.
The parking can be a nightmare, but if you are lucky you can score a space in the lot, otherwise looks like you are stuck with street parking, but be careful, tow trucks are everywhere!Listed in: Brunch Munch

I've been here at night for beers and food, but today I came in for breakfast, coffee and a place to get some work done. I love the warm atmosphere, the friendly staff and the music. It's all around a great place to chill out on the patio or grab a bite to eat.
Speaking of eating, I just had a Chorizo taco... So damn good! It was delicious! The regular coffee is pretty damn good as well. I love this place even more, knowing they have a excellent breakfast and coffee at awesome prices! -

I like this place. Everybody does because there's nothing to hate. It's laid back, reasonably priced, full bar, okay food, and has a very spacious patio great for groups large and small. Everybody loves the laid back atmosphere.
Mr. Creek figured out what we like, then built the same thing a few miles away, only this time he called it Cedar Creek, Dry Creek, and Canyon Creek. Hill country.. get it?
This area has grown a ton in the past few years (commercially), but I don't think it hurt the vibe of this place a bit. It's still a favorite, though I do wish it was still walking distance to me. -

I owe the vast majority of surviving nursing school to Onion Creek. The atmosphere is great. Not too loud not too quiet. Just enough distraction for me to stay focused. Of course, the coffee is phenomenal. I love em all but am a sucker for their chai tea latte. Over the years they have expanded their food menu. Delicious. Fresh food, healthy portions, often big enough to share, and my number one must, the price is right.
They have several dinner specials including a steak night. And they don't mess around with that beef. They also serve great drinks at night and have a wide variety of import and local brewed beer. If I could bring my pillow and blanket and live here. I would. -

Oh Onion Creek, I used to love you and your patio. But now I think you've gotten a little too big for your britches. It took 35(!) minutes for us to get a burger and chicken salad sandwich today. Chicken salad was completely bland - probably the worst I've ever had. Then your Micro Machines Speed Talking bartender took his smoke break right next to our table outside. Seriously dude? Take that around back! It's going to take a long time and some forgetfulness on my part before I come back.

Review from Amelia B.
I finally found my type of place in Houston, likely because it screams a Northwest vibe. This could be due to the fact that it's a coffeehouse in the morning, but the overall atmosphere is incredibly chill and friendly.
On a hot summer Friday night, the place is packed, but there are still available tables thanks to the enormous outdoor space. Unfortunately, these tables had not been bussed, and we ended up bussing them ourselves as servers seemed to be nonexistent at the time.
The drinks were poured stiff (seriously, STIFF), and the sandwiches are super tasty. And while I was ecstatic to see a hummus plate (it's my favorite food group), I ended up not being a huge fan, most likely because artichoke isn't my bag. Overall, very reasonably priced for good food and good drinks.
Where OC gets knocked a little bit is the service (see above). Not only were servers not bussing, but no one even acknowledged us after 15 minutes. A kind fellow patron let us know that if we want drinks/food, its best to order from the bar. She was right. I think I saw one or two servers the entire 2 hours we were there. But given that bar service was prompt and friendly, I didn't mind it so much. -

Headed to Onion Creek with Ronnie K. for drinks after checking out his friends studio at Independence Arts Studio!
I must say the place is busy and loud, but it was a perfect night to sit out and drink some good Shiners! It was a very cool atmosphere and I look forward to going again and maybe try some food too! -
Review from Farrah A.
Onion Creek has more faces than a catty high school girl.
*In the morning, it's a cozy coffee house serving great morning brew, simple breakfast tacos and other light bites.
*The afternoon calls for the lunch crowds flocking in for salads, a tasty hummus plate, and burgers. (Which are kinda meh to me. Not juicy, not flavorful. Pretty light and simple)
*And by night, it's a great little happy hour spot for Heights locals and posers like myself who somewhat wish they lived in this quite lil' neighborhood.
Of all the times to be here, I prefer the am. It's a great spot to have informal morning meetings and continue to mooch off the free wi-fi until they turn it off around 4pm. On a gorgeous day, the patio is a popular spot, but it's not as wonderful (for me) as everyone else claims. It can get crowded, the benches are wobbly, and I *hate* having to get up for every single beer. At an ice house that's perfectly fine, but not at a bar with a full food menu, and a short maze you have to walk through to get back inside.
If you do happen to check out the OC, come on Wednesdays which feature $2 shiners (bottle or draft) and other Texas beers, as well as their $15 steak night. -

I may be a little biased since I met my husband here seven years ago, but I really enjoy OC. I have eaten here as a vegetarian and as a non-vegetarian, and either way it is delicious. Their veggie sandwich is one of the best in Houston, and meat eaters can't go wrong with the OC burger or the bad ass hot dog. They have a pretty decent beer selection to complement the food, and good specials on the cheap stuff if that's what you're into. The bartenders are always friendly and the atmosphere is perfectly laid back.
I have been a patron here for close to a decade (which sounds so weird) and the quality has not diminished. This is a perfect spot for just about whatever you need it to be. -

Houston, TX
Went on a Wednesday night with some girlfriends of mine. They have a great patio area for people to sit outside. The inside is a little crowded and pretty loud. If you're looking for something with table service this is not the place you would want to go. You have to walk up to the bar for food n drink service. The bartenders are really sweet people. They get you orders in pretty quickly. The place has a good mix of people.
I really can't judge the food because I only had the house salad. Trying to keep my waist slim. I don't think you can really mess up a salad...if you did then the place has no hope for survival. Wednesday night is steak night. Who knows how well the steak is?
