Hmm - coming back recently, I couldn't figure out why I liked this place so much last visit.  I was in the same company, it was karaoke night again, similar drink specials and it was the same crowd.

Was it because of the Canucks game on TV?  Was I *that* drunk last time?  Or my disappointment when they told me they no longer has Murphy's Irish Stout on tap?  Did the nostalgia of the once proud NBI fade already?  Maybe because the waitress suggested Guinness instead?  Was it the realization that their draft drink specials weren't really that special?  Why I am happy to pay ~$15 for tasteless mega-brew beer?

I must note that service was good despite being busy.  I left my phone at the bar and the waitress actually called my friend trying to find its owner.  Sometimes, it's great to have a phone so shitty that no one will steal it.

*sigh*  The hunt for a neighbourhood bar within stumbling distance continues...

SO I walk into this place looking for somewhere to drink beer and watch some CFL Football double header action.  The TVs all have GOLF on them and some others have Poker.  I ask the bartender if they are going to be putting "the games" on and he replies "Why would we want to watch THAT first game???"  Well, THAT GAME was the Winnipeg Blue Bombers VS the Edmonton Eskimos which are the two BEST TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE at the moment!  He was hinting that they are ONLY going to be playing the BC Lions game later on.  I was going to politely remind him that the Lions are the worst team in the league at the moment and were playing the equally weak Sask Riders, but I was so perplexed by his rude ignorance that I was lost for words.

Enjoy your golf, you bunch of old farts!

I might come back one night for Kareoke though...

To say the Old Admiral Pub is a bar for 'locals' sounds a bit cutesier than I mean, and is a bit of an understatement. The Old Admiral caters to a certain clientele and well, it doesn't want to cater to you if you aren't that.

I know that sounds a little dire, and while the same thing could have been said about its previous incarnation as the NBI, I don't necessarily mean at the Old Admiral you'll get bottled by a Hell's Angel.

No, at the Old Admiral they tend to cater to an older crowd, a richer crowd and a crowd that comes in on certain days at certain times. I lived in the area and on numerous occasions I'd come in with a few or a large group of young people and we'd always get treated like shit. The food and drinks were fine but it was a constant struggle to get any of the waitresses to give a shit about us and almost every time there was some oddity on the bill that required discussions.

One time we even came into a near empty bar with about 30 people, clearly looking to drink and spend money and were treated like such crap by the staff that I vowed never to come back again.

I hear they have a good brunch and if you're over 40, know when to come and have known the waitresses since they were 8, maybe give it a try. If not I'm sure there's a better watering hole somewhere on the strip.

How can you not check out this über cool hangout? Karaoke Monday's, Wednesday's and Thursday's. Every karaoke night if you sang, your entry is entered into a draw for $25 cash. Plus on the first monday of the month the previous month's comment cards. Draw starts at $200 and currently (may 31) is unclaimed and standing at $800. It's okay... It seems to be more of a pub for the older crowd. Especially with a name like old admirals.  When you walk it, it seems like it's going to be a bit stuffy in there, but surprisingly it's not.

They used to serve Anducci's food there... but from what I heard they don't anymore. I haven't been back since.

Again... it's alright. It's one of the only pub choices in the area.

If you're of a certain age, you love live music and dancing, and you're most comfortable in jeans and a T-shirt, you're probably already a regular. Never eaten here, but have heard the food is fairly good. The patrons seem to range in age all the way from 25-80. No cover charge. Best appreciated after a few bourbons.

The ADMIRAL as it now named - is a very relaxing and clean establishment with OUTSTANDING food specials that are spread around during the week - their $5.25 Roast Beef Dinner on Wednesdays is better than ANY Beef Dip anywhere and far more generous and their 50% off Pasta THURSDAYS is better and bigger than ANTONS.  It is a bit of an older crowd, but it is yahoo free - long gone are the days of the NBI - now that the Admiral is the dedicated eatery for THE HOWARD JOHNSON'S Suite hotel adjacent to it!  The bands on weekends play good classic rock and they have the best KARAOKE on Monday's, Wednesday's and Thursday's that you will ever hear - if that is your kind of thing.  If you want a relaxed good time out for some entertainment and good food - this place is perfect - if you want to pick up chicks - you will be sadly disappointed.
