    I love my Honda Fit!

I just had to get that off my chest. Okotoks Honda (formerly "High River Honda") has been around for years and years.

My search began a couple of years ago for a "cute hatchback that's good on gas, is reliable and could fit three sword cases (for training swords), their owners, Maestro's kennel and Maestro" led to nothing but frustration in Calgary. Several dealerships treated me like a "dumb female". Several models failed my test miserably.

I wound up with a 2007 Honda Fit from these guys. Terry, John and Bernie treated me like a normal person. It probably helped that my dad came with me. They showed me the 2007 Fit, which just came out in North America (aka "Jazz" in Europe and Asia). I LOVE the Magic Seats(R) because of their three modes: Utility Mode (think "station wagon"), Relax Mode (think "full length bed") and Tall Mode (think "bike"). I invented a new mode - "Gig Mode", which is a combination of all three modes, to accommodate my keyboard, speakers and gear.

Today called for the Utility Mode to cart my winter tires. The fog made me late but they took it in stride. I was in and out in just under an hour for my tire swap, which seems to be the standard during 90% of my visits there.

Prices are pretty good (TIP: Labour rate is reasonable when you go outside of the city). They explain everything to you in terms that make sense. They can also fit you in within a day or two for regular appointments.

    Friendly folks.

Their new digs in Okotoks are more spacious. The lounge area is pretty cushy and they have a good selection of junk and semi-healthy food in their vending machine. Cold cream too for your coffee or tea. Bonus!

Okay,  everyone told me not to take my vehicle to a dealership.  I figured, how bad could it really be?  It's not rocket science, right?  It is obvious I know nothing about the mechanics of my vehicle or mechanics.

I'll summarize to keep it relevant.  Had a wagjag coupon for 29.00 cleaning and basic inspection.  I live in north Calgary but my dad lives out there so thought it was a good opportunity to visit.  I was going on holiday in a week and a half so thought I'd get the cleaning and pay for a full inspection as I hadn't done much with my vehicle lately.  I just wanted to make sure it was safe for the trip. I had Tuesdays and Thursdays off so booked it for Thursday.  Dropped off the car for cleaning and full inspection and headed to my dad's for coffee.  Hours later they call and say they won't have time for the inspection, they were still cleaning it.  Totally understandable as I could hands-down have won a competition for dirtiest vehicle in Calgary - no joke.  I pick up the vehicle and for 29 bucks they have done an amazing job and leave a 40 dollar tip.  Goes to show I appreciate and reward good service.

I arrange with them to bring it in for the full inspection and a basic service (oil change if needed, etc) the following Tuesday.  Drop it off Tuesday morning for the inspection (they can't find appt but take me anyway) and say it will take approximately and hour and a half.  They will call me if anything major needs to be done so I can authorize.  Off to my dad's again but he only has an hour so I sit at his place alone for at least 3 more hours.  They did the inspection but it needs alot of work so I will have to bring it in another day. And, of course, it needed the oil change etc so 184.00 paid.

I tell them I am just concerned about safety so for safety's sake, the front brakes and timing belt will be replaced.  Over the phone (and I tell them I need an approximate, not specific dollar), he tells me approx 800 for front brakes and rotors and 850 for timing belt.  Okay, 1700 - ouch.  I go in and he hands me an estimate of 2000 dollars worst case scenario he says.  He also says that they can't find the lug nut key (its a Toyota, not a Honda) and he says they've looked so they may just have to break them off..

So, give up my rodeo tickets (Stampede) to make the trek for the third time from North Calgary to Okotoks to get my brakes and timing belt replaced on Thursday to leave it with them for the day.  Borrow my dad's car and Dad will pick it up at the end of the day.  Lay out the only things that may look like lug nut removers on top of where the spare tire is kept and ask them AGAIN to open the spare tire area to see if the lug nut key is there.

Dad picks it  up for me and it is about two hundred  more than worst case scenario. Got a call at the end of the day that a caliper (whatever that is) had to be replaced so it was alot more but they gave me a 15 percent discount. I check the bill and it shows a water pump replaced for big money, caliper, etc  and mentions I have to pick up new lug nuts. OUch ouch ouch.. there goes all my holiday money.

The lug nut display I had laid out on top of the spare tire area had not moved and was it exactly the same position I'd left it. Sheesh.  Well, at least my vehicle is now safe to drive even if I have a bad taste in my mouth about the whole worst case estimate + additional cost. and not bothering to look for the lug nuts.   Drive it to work on Friday and hit the brakes and it does a swerve/jerk.  WHATTT? Yes, whenever I hit the brake, it jerks and swerves to the left.  Good thing I had my hands solid on the wheel because I could have easily jerked into the other lane.  Test it all the way to work and sometimes it is worse than other but altogether not very safe.  Now I am angry.  Call the dealership and they tell me to come in right away. Can't as I have to work but agree to bring it in Saturday.

So, off I go to Okotoks on Saturday morning for my 4th trek.  My gas and time to use this dealership is outrageous.  Drop it off and walk my dog for quite a while.  No charge to check it but they finally tell me that the mechanic sees what I"m saying and it is because they only replaced one caliper.  I should really have the other caliper replaced. They oiled up the other caliper to see if it helps at all and send me on my way.  Shouldn''t they know that replacing one caliper is dangerous then? We also have a little back and forth of - they didn't look for my lug nut key,- yes they did - no they didn't,etc  I didn't  tell them about my layout of the tire tools.

Driving home to Calgary, I hit the brakes - jerk and swerve.  I leave an angry message for them that there is NO difference.  Later that day, I receive a sympathetic email from them and they tell me I can bring it back in on Monday and for a mere 300 and 30 odd dollars, they will replace the other caliper.

Recommendation  DON'T TAKE YOUR CAR TO A DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE!
