    LOVE this mountain!

So mad that I came here at the end of the season as the conditions were pretty bad, but the mountain was so much fun. There are so many trails and they're great for all levels of snowboarders. Some of the lifts were a little slow; I expected more being that it was Vermont. Nonetheless, awesome mountain and I can't wait till next season comes!

This is, in my opinion, the best mountain in Vermont. The trails are long and various, there's so much to do, and there are lodges everywhere. I love that there's a map everywhere you need one, and that you need one often because there are so many routes to take to the base. It's especially nice during the week, when you can get lost on the trails without a crowd.

Granted, there's not much of a "ski town" on the mountain itself, but that's not why I visit Vermont.

When I think of Southern VT ski & snowboard resorts, I think of Killington, Okemo, Mount Snow & Stratton. And yes, I think of them in that order.

The monstrosity known as Killington is in a class by itself. Tons of terrain, but a bit far for me to consider it with the others.

Okemo was my home mountain about 5 years ago, and it has been a favorite of mine ever since. Over 100 trails of great terrain to ski or ride, it dwarfs what Mount Snow and Stratton give you. It's spread out layout makes it seem so much larger than the other two. It also boasts some of the best snow making in the Northeast which has been key recently.

I think the layout lends itself to groups of all ability levels, and the number of chairs makes it easy to stick together as a group without having to hit all the same runs.

    Highlights for me:

-Anything serviced by the Solitude Quad

-I think it is called, Ledge, right underneath the Sachem Quad. Great thing about this set up is that speed freaks can hit the black diamond, Ledge, while more casual skiers and riders can travel down scenic green circle, Sachem, or the rolling blue square, Lower World Cup.

-Sachem Quad to a second quad takes a bit of time, but will set you up with all kinds of great runs for all levels...that are all serviced by mid mountain lifts.

-Sitting Bull is a great meet up spot at the base of the mountain with drink specials, OK food, live entertainment, and giveaways.

-The Loft just off property is a must visit for your Apres Ski viewing pleasure.

-The town of Ludlow boasts many restaurants, bars, and places to stay. Such a quaint VT town.

-Sunday Solution Lift Ticket offers only morning half day discount ticket in area. 8:30-1pm

    Only Low light:

Epic Restaurant by the Solitude Lift. What did they do to that place? I want a warm, casual place to break from riding. What's up with all the fanciness??

Let me start off by disclaiming that I am a novice skier that has only skied a handful of times in my life (and that was 25 years ago).

Was up at Okemo skiing over the long New Year's weekend.  My gf and I skied the Jackson Gore side of Okemo both days.  It's tough to give a fair assessment of the slopes due to the fact that they didn't have any natural snowfall and the weather conditions were unseasonably warm this weekend.  However, with that said, I thought they had a fair amount of trails open and in good condition, all things considered.

There were several things that stood out that impressed me.......

First, everything from my perspective was organized and efficient.  There were plenty of buses to immediately shuttle you up to the slopes from the parking lot.  I had to rent my equipment and again I thought this process was efficient and moved quickly.  The lift lines were short and moved quickly as well.

Second, I took 2 lessons the first day and 1 lesson the second day.  Although I had skied a few times many years ago, I never took a lesson.  My gf convinced me that lessons were a must and I have to admit she was right on the money with that advice.  The instructors I had were friendly, patient and offered great instructions.  In fact my one instructor (Martha) took us up on the slopes and made us leave our poles behind.  I was terrified at this thought of skiing without poles, but I'll be damned if she didn't know what she was talking about.  It forced you to learn control and balance over your skies and I didn't fall even once!!!

Third, if you have children, this is a very family friendly resort.  I noticed that the lessons for the children were very well organized.  All of the kids taking lessons had on bibs/vests with their names and group so even if one should somehow get away from the group, they could immediately be identified and reunited with their group (in fact I actually saw this happen).

Perhaps this would not be the best place to ski for advanced skiers (I can't really comment on that since I'm far from advanced) but I think it's a great place for beginners or intermediates.

The bar area is a bit small and does get very crowded, but I suppose that's a minor negative.  All in all, I had a very positive experience skiing Jackson Gore and will definitely be returning.

    Great for a first-timer!
I bought a lesson/rental package and got way more than my money's worth. You get 2, 2hr. lessons with a break for lunch. My instructor, Glen, was the greatest! He was so good with beginners and I ended up making much more progress than I imagine I would have with another teacher. Bottom line: very good deal, very fun day. Will definitely go back next year.

Okemo has more then 100 trails, excellent snow making, grooming, glades, moguls, terrain parks...its everything you could ask for, so why am I not in love with this mountain.

Well, the layout of this mountain is absolutely horrible. There are parts on this resort where you have to go straight or slightly uphill to reach trails. To get to Jackson Gore you have to exert monstrous amount of energy going slightly uphill...its ridiculous (on my first run I was sweating profusely). There are a lot of trails where you have to go cross country.

The worst part is that you have to take 3 lifts to get to the top of the mountain. That just doesn't make sense. Plus this resort seems to cater to condo renters. There are condos everywhere, even in the middle of the mountain. Also the lodges are not as modern or good as other resorts of this size. That said, the terrain on Okemo is better then the other southern Vermont ski resorts, but I would still pick Mt Snow over Okemo any day.

Okemo is my family's mountain of choice, and I go there every year. This year was a little rough due to the lack of snow fall, but in past years it has been superb! If there is some decent snow, I will definitely head up again this season. Over 100 trails with a wide variety of greens, blues, and blacks for all skill levels. After a day of sitting, the Sitting Bull at the bottom of the main hill is a great place to get a meal.

I suppose your average person would stay here in the winter time to enjoy a nice ski vacation. However, my first stay here was in June....with no snow...no skiing....no vacation...and for work. Well there goes having any fun!

My job had me stay overnight at Okemo when I was in the area teaching astronomy to the locals. Considering the time of year, the place was empty, but it really got me excited about maybe coming back in the future to experience skiing for the first time. Okemo is made up of lots of little inns, condos, apartments, and houses arranged along a giant mountain with beautiful views. I ended up staying in a condo in Building C and it was really homey. This place seems like a great place to go with your family. There was a fully stocked kitchen, big living room with a fireplace, a large comfy bedroom, and a good size bathroom. They definitely provided everything you would need to function comfortably for a week. Granted, I was only there for one night, but first impressions are key, and they delivered!

The skiing on New Year's Day was a bit slushy, but at least it wasn't icy...  The greens were pretty good actually, but some trails had far too much cross country skiing and often crisscrossed with black diamonds, which was a bit unnerving until I decided that it wasn't my responsibility to avoid a crash, it was theirs (spoken just like Daisy Buchanan).

One other potentially fluky downside: the people I ran into (not literally) at this mountain were universally unfriendly.

Awesome for families, spring conditions are typical - cold at the top, heavy snow at the bottom. Lots of trails for all levels and the views are spectacular.

Plenty to do for the non skiiers; we tried the new alpine slide which was a lot of fun. You can buy multiple rides but one was good for me.

An added plus was that the ski school arranged for a sitter for my niece one night so the adults could go out.

    We love it here!

came here for a weekend christmas vacation. The resort was pretty nice.  It was convenient that the mountain was right next to our condo so we didn't have to drive to go snowboarding.  The mountains are pretty empty, which made it easier to fly through without worryin about avoiding ppl. There are a bunch of trails and in between each section, there are waffle stands, rest areas, which made it convenient for food or hot drinks at any time.

Up at the top of the mountain, the view is absolutely GORGEOUS! WOW! I have never seen such a snowy scenic view like this one.  Other than the fact that it took 3 different lifts to get to the top, this place is a def to-go place for skiiers and snowboarders. Lift tickets are $81 for a full day and they also offer 2-day and 3-day packages.

One great thing about this mountain is that if you ever fall, you won't have to worry about too many others noticing or colliding into you ;)

    3.5 Stars.

The reason: crowded lines for Quad A and Quad B, Crowded lodge, Crowded rental

The skiing itself was a lot of fun. This mountain is has harder terrain than Stratton (normal go-to mountain). I had fun challenging myself though.

Another reason for the 3.5 stars - the lodge and rentals looked pretty worn-down. I am so glad that I have my own boots and it has been good to me.

The food was pretty decent for a ski lodge though.

Rounding a cliff that no one seemed to notice one slight move and we'd be falling to our deaths, came our coach bus bumping Bob Marley with 55 twenty-something year olds singing along to "could you be loved."

Our apartment-like condos that we stayed in were amazing! They had 2 bed rooms on adjacent sides with a full kitchen, living room and dining area. Each condo apt held 8 people. So our group basically took out an entire wing of this place.

A few of my "not so advanced yet" friends and i stuck to the small trails which had the sugar house, which was a rest-stop/restaurant halfway down the mountain that you could hang out in and take a break. Sometimes our "little" breaks turned into an hour. :)  However the mountain had a great variety of hard and intermediate trails to please everyone.

I had an amazing time here, the instructors were hot and they have great package deals for groups. I have been eagerly waiting to return!

Jackson Gore, the new resort at Okemo Mountain appears to be the hottest new spot in Vermont to get hitched.

My cousin got married here this past weekend and what a wonderful and beautiful setting.

All new hotel, restaurant, spa, and all top notch services the mountain and trails backdrop the horse shoe corridor of buildings.

The outdoor ceremony was very nice and the weather just picture perfect. What was not perfect was the food.
Appetizers were not up to par, many over cooked. The salad was dressed with a very strong vinaigrette which was very overpowering. The two dinner choices, stuffed chicken and salmon were dry and over cooked, the vegetables cold and virtually tasteless.

The wedding cake was beautiful, all individual cupcakes which were dried out. I first saw these at Tom E's sister wedding picture. The cupcake wedding cake craze  is catching on here in the US.

Anyways. Most everyone drank instead of eating. Free wine and beer which included local VT and micro-brews.

My grandparents won an award during the "longest married" dance.  62 years! Anyways, what a nice place, too bad the food was forgettable.

Okeno... Granted the conditions yesterday were perfect, no crowds, and the lift attendants were attentive.

I even found some goggles on clearance. My main problem with Okemo despite being a huge resort that lacks a New England flair is the shear number of stairs.

In order to get from parking lot to the ticket office you had to walk up at least 2 flights. After that you need to  walk up 2 more flights to get the piste. I have been skiing for quite some time and I have never seen that many stairs to get skiing. I'm not saying I have a problem either, but after a hard day of skiing the last thing you want to do is walk down stairs. What is worse is all of the stairs are made of concrete or steel. Concrete is sensible but steel stairs seems like the equation for someone to lose a few front teeth or get some stitches.

But on the plus side Okemo did have some pretty nice and scenic rolling trails which were a fun way to say farewell to the winter sports.

I have to admit that there are people for whom Okemo is a great resort. I have known some of these people for years and i have become acquainted with others more recently.  I am not one of these people.

The tendency of the resort seems to be to cut very wide very straight groomers. An Okemo chairlift is actually the only place I've ever heard someone speaking reverently about 'corduroy' outside of resort radio advertisements.

I like steep, ungroomed, winding trails and tree skiing. Skiing is about going into the outdoors. In New England the woods ought to be part of the outdoors experience. Trying to remove the experience of the woods from skiing is antithetical to my motivation to ski.

Okemo does have a couple very pleasant treed runs but they are exceedingly short.

One of those two stars is for the morning 1 hour free ski in which you can ride the lifts without a ticket. It is great if I happen to be in the area as Okemo's trails can only hold my interest for an hour and a half.

As a final note, last weekend at Okemo, for the first time in what is probably more than fifteen years, I saw a 'No Jumping' sign on a black diamond.

Disclaimer: I was on the Killington ski team for three years, so I have slight bias. But that also means I've been here countless times

Whoever calls this the best skiing in the east hasn't been to Mt. Washington (Tuckerman's Ravine, anyone?), Killington, Sunday River, Stratton, Mad River Glen, Gore, Whiteface, I could name a few more)

Frankly, I think Okemo is a shitty mountain. They always have poor coverage, and make snow in all the wrong places. Their lift ticket is as expensive as every other mountain, and they are always incredibly crowded. Their lodges have no character, and good luck if you can even find a seat for lunch, let alone where you stored your shoes.

I've had a few races here, and talked to some of the Okemo team members, and they said that they consistently take up the best trails on the mountain, so if you're a good skiier, look elsewhere or join the team.

Positives: Ludlow is a really nice town.

The mountain is overrun with families who drove up from NYC and Boston and can't ski for their lives. If you're a good skiier, ski elsewhere. If you're an inexperienced skiier/family, go to Bromley, Pico, or Stratton.

Like Shane F said, Okemo is a great resort for some skiers and snowboarders...I would say beginners.  This place is kind of like Bretton Woods in NH...pretty flat, with wide trails and not much excitement.

My husband and I came to Okemo for our final weekend of snowboarding for the season in late March, because we had never been here and it was an awareness day with our ski club...it only held our interest for about 1/2 the day...plus the snow was really wet and slow.

Also, I was really disappointed by the fact that Group Sales is located down the street from the actual resort...We didn't realize this, and then had walk through the woods from the main lodge, AND across a pretty wide brook on a freaking 6 inch wide plank, in order to go get our tickets...and then walk back.  Fun.  Thanks for accommodating us guys...

This place is very good for children and parents, people just learning to ski and has some interesting half pikes and steppes for advanced skiers. I am still considered a Level II skier and thus this was a great place for me.

Okemo is my favorite mountain to ride. They are one of the most fun. I mean...they blast music while you are waiting in the lift line. It amazes me that more places don't do this. It definitely gets me pumped to ride. Plus most of the quads are high speed, so you don't feel like you are on a lift all day.

The main lodge is pretty crowded at lunch, so it's better to eat early or late.

The blue trails have tons of rolling hills to ollie off of, if you want to flash some steez. (I promise I will some day.)

Been coming here for over 25 years. The snow making and groomers are first rate.  Terrain is varied. Lift lines move quickly. Food (especially the chili, fries and hot chocolate) are great mountain treats.

But what separates this place from others are the people. Consistently friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and caring, they make this place terrific. Examples: Instructors for kids are patient and very strong. They seem to enjoy what they are doing.  "Mountain Ambassadors" help direct traffic or even help carry a bag or two up to the lodge in the morning!  There is no better place for families than this one (which is probably why the "singles" crowd goes to Killington).

And Ludlow is a great little ski town. Some good restaurants, a serviceable supermarket, good pubs -- what more do you need?

It's New England skiing at its best. Unpretentious but high quality. You can have your Killington and Stratton and Stowe. I'll take Okemo anytime.

The best place to ski in New England!  Outstanding snowmaking, grooming, and trail system.  Lots of intermediate terrain.  And it also has a ton of great places to learn to ski/ride as well.

    Tips...
    - Go on $39 Thursdays - Cheapest tickets possible and no crowds whatsoever
    - Join their Facebook fan page for lift ticket deals
    - Park at Jackson Gore and you won't have to take a parking lot shuttle bus
    - Eat lunch at Jackson Gore - but avoid skiing these trails because they are crowded and get skiied off quickly.
    - $15 off coupons are common for early (until Christmas or so) and late season (Feb-Apr) skiing
    - Okemo is a GREAT place for late-season skiing (bumps!)

The best trails are Upper & Lower World Cup, Upper & Lower Chief, and Sapphire.  You'll be hooked!

Okemo is my favorite mountain on the east coast. I've stayed in Ludlow twice and I have snowboarded at Okemo 5 times. I have always been very happy with the grooming and the nonexistent crowds.

Okemo is very large with a wide variety of terrain. My favorite trail is Rum Run just because it is so unique. The trail consists of a ~200 foot steep drop and then a ~50 foot steep incline, so it basically forces you to bomb the first half of the trail in order to attain enough speed to reach the top of the incline(you can get some air if the conditions are right).

I've enjoyed Okemo the most out of all of the Vermont resorts I've been to(I've been to most of the ski resorts in southern VT).

The only criticism I have is that there are not enough trails for experts. They have a few double blacks but they are mostly just black diamonds with moguls or tree skiing. There is nothing steep enough to be challenging to me (I've been riding for about 9 years) but it is still very enjoyable.

Overall, I would recommend this resort over the others in the area (especially Killington) to anyone staying in VT.

My first time at Okemo happened last weekend. Got there on Thursday night, left Sunday evening. I stayed at the Okemo Mountain Lodge, situated LITERALLY next to all major lifts (and bunny slope).

The weather was awsome. Friday was not too crowded, Saturday was packed (especially with kids), but Sunday, again delivered very few people on the slopes (maybe because rain was in the forecast all day long).

I loved the trails (even though I'm still between beginner/moderate snowboarder and did mostly greens, some friends who came with me, did black diamonds and said those trails were fantastic, all open and covered with a hefty carpet of fresh snow.

Even though it's a 4.5 drive away from NYC, it's much worth making the trek. I may be trying one of those direct buses for $90. I hear, it's not bad - although, only good for one-day getaway.

Totally recommend Okemo (I wish they had lights for night sessions, like Camelback).

Review of the "Learn" program- I went to Okemo and took advantage of their free December Learn-to-ski/ride session: free 2-hour lesson, rentals, lower lift ticket, beginner discount "First Tracks" card for future visits.  I made a reservation, showed up at the rental counter, and got my ticket, lesson voucher and coupon for discount card.  My 5 stars are for the lesson, which was excellent- my instructor (from New Zealand!) explained things very well, kept me from getting too frustrated with all my falling, and had infinite patience with me.  Obviously, I stuck to the Learning Area, which was well-trafficked b/c it was a Saturday.  Magic Carpet lift was good- not too fast or overwhelming.  However, a snow gun was inexplicably in the middle of the Learning trail.  All in all, lots of fun- I'm hooked on snowboarding now, thanks for the wonderful lesson.  Even if I had to pay for the lesson, it would have been worth it.

Now for the other stuff:  Main base lodge was laid out well, with multiple entrances and exits, center aisle for traffic flow, 2nd floor additional seating, pretty wide aisles and plenty of shelves for shoes and bags.  Large parking lots were across the street so not a bad hike, especially compared to other resorts, though I could see how it could be a hassle on crowded days when parking in the overflow lots further away.  I know how more expert level visitors can get bored w/ the wide, unvaried trails (I'm a intermediate level skier as well and have skiied at Okemo in the past) but I'll keep this as a beginner/learning review.  If you are a beginner skier/boarder, Okemo's trails are right up your alley.  The resort has grown large enough for a bit of exploring-check out the Jackson Gore area.  Snowmaking is very good here- great base & coverage (even for early season) that lasts into the later snow months.  Lifts are almost all high speed quads and very fast.  Visiting off-peak and going to the other base lodges (a good tip for every resort with multiple concession-points) helps in avoiding the crowds of people...every mountain resort gets jammed on peak times during weekends.  Yes, there are stairs from the entrance to the base, but hello, it's a mountain....did you want an escalator?  Also, as noted by a couple other Yelpers, Ludlow is a great little ski town- supermarket, restaurants, little shops, lodging.

Note that I have not (yet) visited other major Vermont resorts, and this review is thus accordingly limited in scope.

Bottom line: more than decent.  A good variety of terrain, and plenty of it, albeit somewhat liberally graded (most intermediates on the easier end of intermediate, some single-black-diamonds would be graded intermediate or perhaps advaced intermediate elsewhere).

A great place to learn to ski, there's a nice slice of the bottom of the mountain with green-only terrain.  Good for mixed-skill families because there is plenty to do uphill.

Did not eat at any of the fine(r) dining establishments on the hill; the day-lodge buffet fare was decent, if at truly excruciating price points -- $10 for a chicken tenders and fries, $5 for a slice of cheese pizza.

Mechanics for parking and so forth were acceptable.  Lodge area is pretty big and annoying to get through; I continually wonder why every ski resort proprietor doesn't reflect upon Deer Valley and try to do it like that ...

My favorite mountain to ski in the northeast. Snow is always well groomed and it rarely gets icy. Lots of cruising trails perfect for families and the blacks and great for those wanting a challenge.

I love Okemo.  Even in ridiculous crowds and long lift lines, I have awesome trips here.  It's only 2.5-3 hours from Boston (Malden :P) and they have great parks and conditions mostly.  The lift tickets are outrageously priced at $81, but I use my "student" id and after paying full price once, I get to pay only $66 from now on there... that's key.  The area around Okemo is great, Taco places, Wicked good Pizza, board shops, bars, etc...  Had a crazy New Year's eve there - if you ever accept a ride home from a drunk girl with 6 other people that are also all drunk and get pulled over.  Just tell the girl to say she is the DD and trying to get everyone home safe.  The cop will just say "That's what I like to hear have a good night," let you off to continue partying back at your rental house down the street, where you can continue not getting a good night sleep, watch as your friends take these drunk girls into their bedrooms and you awkwardly tell your new gay friend that you prefer older men and don't want to make out with him... :-/

Beware of crowds on the weekends.  It took me approximately 1.5 hours to rent skis on one Saturday morning.  The snow is not good on Sunday either - icy patches (they groom the snow all week and then a huge number of people come on Saturday, so not much time to groom for the Sunday people).  I am a beginner skiier and the crowds of people on the mountain did not help in trying to become better by practice.  Every time I would try to go down my "first" slope, I would hear swoosh-swoosh right behind me and then when I turn my head to look, there would be a group of skiiers/snowboarders straight at me!  Well, probably not straight at me...did I mention I'm a beginner skiier?

Also beware of customer service at the Learning Center.  There is one woman there (seems like manager/head person) that I have encountered more than once (over phone and in person) that is not friendly at all.  She is not helpful at all when you are trying to ask questions about different kinds of lessons and trying to make a reservation.

I saw LOTS of families with small kids, so I think this is a very family friendly resort.

I love Smokey Joe's.  For people who don't want a burger/hot dog, get the tuna salad, it takes forever (they grill it when you order it and it's a huge piece of ahi tuna), but it's worth it.

Not a great mountain. They do not control anything and even when they see skiers out of control and knocking people down they turn away. Lifts keep stopping and were very slow. Beware if you use the ski school. They don't have enough in structures to bring the kids up the lift so they rely on people taking the lift up. Once at the top there is no one to monitor the kids so either you need to stay with them till an instructor gets to the top taking away from your ski time or you just leave a 4 year old unsupervised. Very poor experience for what they charge

This is the best skiing on the East Coast - especially if you are a family with mixed ages/levels of skiers.  The resort is just wonderful, especially since they opened Jackson Gore
